Please see the dozen or so posts that follow the 15000th regarding the interesting behavior of the forum and a modest proposal.

Thank you

Investigation launched. :type:
Thanks for the heads up. Anyone have any input to offer at this point? Is there anyone claiming the original 15,000th post? (no offense to whatastud)

I'll check to see if a mod can pull records of any sort regarding any deleted posts. The confusion seems valid, and it was discussed right after the fact by the individuals present in the forum.
I'll take some blame for not being present during the #15,000 post timeframe as I should have tried to be. I'll wait the rest of the day to see what input anyone involved has to offer..........xjsynx maybe?

In the mean time: BP, get me your shipping info via PM again please. Depending on what we come up with, I'll see what I can work out. Whatastud is our current official winner.

Maybe Satire can have some input on this one.

I did see BP at 15k and stud at 15001. But when I think the script of the forum caught up, according to the time stamp, it repositioned BP's and Studs.

So maybe a mod can look at the time stamps????

The only thing that could possibly cause this is some crazy MySQL database corruption / table errors. The PHP engine doesn't render things before it gets a store / read request from the database (ie a committed response). If it indeed changed post #'s it's because either 1 someone thought they saw 15000, or 2, the database was somehow damaged at the time of the post and an inconsistency in the database caused the loss of a simultaneous posting. When the second or third read request came in the database server caught the error and discarded the broken entry. It should be sitting in an error log / error table if this is the case. But that would require the server admin (who has hands on ssh access), to slog through some mounds of logs (if the debugging is even turned up high enough to catch it).

This sort of thing is a very difficult problem to diagnose. If they were running oracle on the back end it probably wouldn't have happened at all... But then again oracle is big, slow, bloated, and not free, but it scales like a freak of nature for large high performance databases.

Sounds good.

Lie's, Confusion, and Corruption. Things are going to get ugly, one character will die, another will rise on the next episode of "When The Boss Is Away". Please check your local listings for times.

SatireWolf, maybe you'd be able to give me some advice regarding some of my recent Linux blundering.

So I decided that a virtual linux machine on a vista host is not a good solution for my laptop (it's all I have right now until next week). So I've been working on dual booting these last few days. OpenSuSE 10.2 had some shortcomings, but the biggest issue is getting sound working. I tried gnome/kde, oss and newest alsa for drivers as well as the newest kernel. It seemed to detect the hardware fine, and even play sounds, except they were horribly stuttered/choppy and basically didn't work with the desktop or media players. What's interesting, though, is that flash stuff had working sound (like youtube videos). Any suggestions?

The second thing might just be that I think I'll be switching to gentoo to see if some of my other, smaller gripes go away. But any other recommendations for another distribution that's decently set up for desktop, development and a little multimedia stuff is welcome.

Give Fedora 8 a try when it comes out in a month or two. Until then Fedora 7 is very solid for multimedia. The stuttering might be a DMA/IRQ issue, or even power management (another tricky problem). Try booting with the acpi=off option on the kernel options line. Also, ditch Suse, Novell needs to die for it's sins against the open source world. No one lyes with the beast that is Microsoft and survives.

How old is the laptop and who manufactured it? Also what kind of graphics does it have? Intel integrated?

It's not old. HP Pavilion dv6000. Don't know when production of that model started, but I think it was bought in May this year. I was surprised that suse worked as well as it did "out of the box" for this situation, just the sound had issues.

Graphics are nvidia geforce go 6150. Sound is Conexant High Definition Audio. Procs are 2x 64bit AMD Turion 1.8GHz.

I actually hadn't installed the latest graphics driver from nvidia, and it was probably using some crappy one. I didn't check the cpu load at all when I was testing sound applications, so I'm not sure how graphically intensive they were in the case that it might have been doing software rendering or something, and it could be the cause of sound stuttering.

One of my other problems was that the system would freeze on startups, which I think was the power management issues. Some boots I would use acpi=off, and others I might have forgot it because it worked sometimes without it.

But yeah, suse is not to my tastes and I'll definitely be switching. Gentoo, or I'll look into fedora now that you say so.
thanks for the suggestions.
