Wasme's recomp journey....

A TENS unit only increases endorphin levels to temporarily alleviate pain, it doesn't really fix anything from my understanding. Then again if you have a knot I am sure it can help release it a bit.

It does help relieve a knotted muscle as long as you massage it also. Plus they are fun...lol
Trigger point injections work best for me(when it gets really bad).

I have a tense unit the va gave me. Don't know y I didn't suggest it earlier. I love mine. I've struggled with back problems for a lot of years. Mostly self induced from the "wanna be dumb gotta be tough" mentality. Sometimes things work. Sometimes nothing works. It's a slippery slope. I just hope u find a happy medium to continue with the things u enjoy

Hey guys, just a little update. Massage helped a little, but still very sore. Sitting with a heating pad at the moment. I am hoping to have some positive results (another massage prob tomorrow) and be able to get into some very light, controlled lifting this weekend..

Heal up brother.

Wait more.

Get another massage and take a day or two to recover from that. Massages release a lot of toxins in your blood so take an extra day or two. Really hydrate and ice the back.

Well, I had had enough of what just feels like sitting around and doing nothing.... was starting to feel almost aggressive with no outlet, so had to get one workout in. Just something light, controlled to get some blood flow and a pump. Felt really good. See how I feel tomorrow before going with a light arm workout.

Flat Bench / Band Over and Backs
Six sets of 12/10

Incline Bench / Band Pull Aparts
Six sets of 10/10

Machine Flyes / Lateral Raises
Six sets of 10/10

Seated Overhead Smith Press / Band Face Pulls
10/10
10/10
* /10
* /10

- the seated overhead smith press even with light weight went right to lower back so as soon as i felt any tension immediately called it.

That sucks the sohp hurt, but glad you got so,etching in. It sucks being laid out I'm sure.

Yeah, if OHP could be felt immediately then go see a chiro. You need an "adjustment". Sucks too, I know that feeling.

Yeah.....

Hopefully you didn't slip a disc that's sitting on a major nerve and just waiting for you to lift again and paralyze you......Back problems are a NSD man. Get it checked out.

Should he be going to a chiro or getting an MRI? Wouldn't a chiro risk making it worse if he's got pain under pressure?

I don't know; I'm asking.

A good chiro will be able to tell if it's an alignment issue or if he needs an MRI. Obviously if he can get an MRI then that's the best thing. One of 2 things most likely going on. Either a pinched nerve which alignment will take care of and is what it sounds like or a "ruptured disc" which you will have constant pain and it will throb at times. When the fluid leaks out of the disc it irritates the nerves. Simon has been down this road already with L4-L5.

100% accurate. At least with my back as well. My problems are L5/S1

...I actually have been the chiro route in the past and it always resulted in the return of sciatic pain, so only opt for massage therapy. I am quite certain this is not disc related or in the spine, as I am able to stand from sitting and not walk hunched over like most time I hurt my back. This is more on right right side of my lower back (in line with my surgical scar but a few inches to the right.

The OHP didn't 'hurt' it persae, but I could certainly feel some pressure and didnt want to risk anything thus stopped.

Ok woke this morning, feeling better. Slight ache still there but almost feel like last nights workout, lifted me out of my rut. Went with a long walk when I got up, to gauge how it felt and then followed up with a light/controlled arm workout. Felt good. I plan on using this strategy for the next week (with rest days), and only working chest/shoulders/arms and back will only being pulldowns/pullups work - of course gauging any discomfort.

This was what I did today:

Vbar Pushdowns ss EZ Curls
- 6 sets of 15/10

Close Grip Bench ss Alternating DB Curls
- 4 sets of 10/10

Bent Over Overhead Rope Extensions ss Hammer Curls
- 6 sets of 12/10

Sounds like you're ready for a deadlift session

Glad you're starting to feel better and you got a massage! Just keep taking it easy so you can get healed up!

Speaking of the acupuncture --there is something similar, called dry needling, where they take a larger needle and puncture the knots multiple times to get them to release...sounds crazy but my boss had is done and said that it actually didn't hurt!

Yesterday, I did get a vertical back workout in.

4 variations of pull downs:
wide
narrow - hands facing
wide-neautral
narrow-neutral

5 sets of 10 for each variation. Things felt really good. Back even got a nice stretch.

My back pain has changed significantly, in that it seems to be gone, except for first thing in the morning. Today, will be no lifting... and i will roll through the last 3 days worth of light workouts again before adding something to it. Slow and steady, going to do it right this time!

Yesterday really got away from me. When my daughter was 2, I got her and her brother a cat. Well my daughter (18 this week), and the cat 16... had to say bye yesterday.

She had noticed last week something in her throat. She wanted to take her to the vet, which was fine, but also by herself in case something was wrong (fearing it more than anything). Well after inspection most of the cat's throat was covered in a tumour. The vet immediately recommended she be put down, even though he felt she wasnt in pain persae - as it would end up closing her throat in the near future. I thought my daughter was extremely brave doing it all by herself. And feel really sad for her. I know she will be ok, will just take a little time to get used to not having her around all the time.

Sorry for yours and her loss, man. Always tough losing a pet.

I hate losing a cat. My wife thinks she's Dr Doolittle. I've got some cats if you need one or three...
It's tough at any age. And hard on you watching her have to go through it.

Get ready for the next cat is all I can advise. If she's had one this long...there will be more!

Thanks guys... appreciate it! Ya that is the hardest part seeing her heart broken, but she'll be fine. She just left for the gym, so that's a good start

Heck ya! Why didn't you go?

Sciatic pain from the readjustment means that your piriformis is tight and when you hip and back are actually in alignment it stretches it tight causing it to press into the sciatic nerve. This means you need to both stretch and roll out your piriformis regularly so that isn't an issue. It could also be part of what moves you back out of alignment in the first place. Get to working on it Sir! Oh and for heavens sake no sitting and overhead pressing when your back is in pain!!!! Adding fuel to the fire with compression. You would be better off putting straps on and hanging from a pull up bard as long as possible to decompress your spine, possibly even raising your legs to 90 degrees or less depending on mobility basically up to the point before your back rounds out.

Your homework is to stick a LaX ball under your butt cheek and mash out that piriformis and look up some good piriformis stretches as well as get an adjustment.

Sorry to hear about the family's loss. Good that she is getting out to get on with life however!

11/24/2015 Chest and Shoulders

Back is feeling totally pain free today.. but will give it a few more days of light workouts, then go from there. Got a great pump from this one:

Went with a approx 3-4010 tempo right through the workout

Bench Press / Band Over and Back
-6 supersets of 10

Incline Bench Press / Band Pull Aparts
- 6 supersets of 10

Machine Flys / DB Lateral Raises
- 6 supersets of 10

Standing Overhead DB Press / Plate Raise / Band FacePulls
- 4 trisets of 10

Glad the pain was gone Simon. A few more days of light workouts will do the body good.
I like Chris' recommendation also. The cold weather is probably a big contributor to the tightness also. The lower back and hammies like to be warm!

With the equipment you have, garage > gym.

All very smart lifters here!

Jill Miller has some great YouTube videos on stretching techniques. She has some good piriformis techniques you may want to look at. Simple but effective.

Nice suggestion! I will check her out too!

Did a seminar with her. She is phenomenal. I'd recommend checking her out to anyone. Her DVD set "Yoga Tune-Up" is a great resource to and not just for the yoga enthusiast!

I have been wearing a neoprene 'fat' wrap around my waist, through all these workouts. Which has kept the area very warm.
