In the wild, the alpha figure has been defined by strength only. The current alpha could be taken down by an even stronger one and take over the pack.
In our modern human society, with laws and moral restrictions, an alpha cannot be defined only by strength but also willpower, cunningness, confidence, leadership, and good health.
A real alpha believes in himself and has an instinct to protect himself and help those who believe in him as well.
A natural alpha feels responsible for his own actions and outcomes. He knows he holds the power to do anything that has a purpose.
An alpha no only has work hard to rise to the top as alpha, but has to stay on top!

Alpha is responsibility...

I watched a show where the Silverback lured the hunters away from his family knowing that he was giving up his life. There is a reason why we compete to be Alpha it is to have the honor of protecting those we love. The most noble of tasks... those who think that alpha is some kind of power trip is what alpha is are not qualified. It's about honor... integrity and love....

Thanks Casey, the spirit moves me sometimes, I will think about the Gorilla sometime (what a fuggin noble creature) and think do I measure up, am I a willing to do what it takes to protect my loved ones ... that's a man...and any man who is willing to do what is necessary is alpha in my books. Leadership is not supposed to be about power and priviledge it's supposed to be about responsibility... :)

I make you and your family safe when you hear someone downstairs at night. I make sure your elderly grandparent is found and safely back home. I run toward danger while others run away. I get so excited when I see a bunch of posts on this thread but then find out no additional winners have been announced -___-
 
This guy at the gym last week said, "Wow you're turning into a beast." I really don't know what to think about that. I just said "Well, I don't know.". Then this past week this guy asked me what I was taking, I just said food. I'd rather not stand out and just lurk in the shadows. Maybe I'm just not alpha. Really I hate to be noticed.
 
Being an Alpha is simply a way of life, air about you, mind-set, way of thinking and attitude that one has...You can become more of an alpha as you develop over time, given a degree of aptitude and experience. Life is a game, you win or you lose. Alpha will do whatever it takes to win.

It's a metaphor. You either win or lose in situations of life. It means you give it your all or you don't. I believe there is no such thing as being in the middle. Those are the people that did not amount too much at all.
