Turff49 Quest for Success

Never made it to the movies. Chilled out in the pool and then was on the phone for over an hour with the boy. Really miss him so it's great to talk to him when he calls. Great day over all! Hope yours went great too!

Same here with my boy! I sure miss him!! When I visited with him a few weeks ago I stood there looking at a man! I realized then that he will be just fine without me. This was both a sad and comforting feeling.

I am sure that was the best Father's Day present possible

Awww, we have some awesome fathers here! :')

Definitely let's me know that there are still amazing men out there! :D

Arms day!!

Actually made it to the gym this morning. Won't have to workout in the heat outside today...lol

Tricep work really fatigued my arms this morning but was a good feeling. Had been thinking I was neglecting the triceps so felt good to go heavy on them.

Strong arm day Brian. Yeah, screw that heat work. lol

Working out in the heat isn't that bad. After the first 15 minutes you're like, ok I'm soaking wet, can't get any wetter. Muscles and joints feel better in the humidity and you just get a little delusional and say I'm going all out!
The first 10-15 minutes really suck though...lol

It's got to make the bar really slippery though. I could see myself failing deads and squats due to that. lol

So you get that way too eh? Starting sucks but once into it, it is going to take a lot to get you to stop before it is done. Just puts you in a place of mental toughness.

Eh... not too bad, either gloves, or some chalk and everything is breezy baby! That chalk will make even a sweaty grip lock down.

I hear ya both on this one. I train outside too. Cold in the winter but long underwear and a sweatshirt take care of that .... hot in the summer but after that initial 10-15 minutes its all beast-mode. Wouldn't trade it for the commercial gym after constantly hearing of all the 'douchebags in the gym' ;)

Sometimes I think I get a better workout in this blistering heat than I do at the gym!
Today was Shoulders and they are torched right now!

The 185's were tough for me. My rhomboids tightened up and with the limited mobility in the neck with it all fused the bar kept scraping the back of my head.

Side Lateral raises. A little different version this time. You start and finish at the back of the thigh making sure to keep your shoulders pulled back. Heckuva burn this way on the outside rear delt.

Ran out of weights on the deck and didn't feel like carrying any from the porch there and back. Guess I'm lazy...lol
And that was a drench fest. All clothes soaked and ringing wet!

By back of thigh you mean hams?

I need mor laterals and a shrugs in my life.

Yep.

Sheesh! I'm glad I came and read your log on rest day! I'm worn out just reading it!! You're such a beast!!!!!!!

Strong military presses! So ... do you have a roof over that deck where you're training or any kind of shade at all ? Or are you training in the heat AND the direct sunlight also? I ask this because I also train outside .... have my gym setup in the front of the house ... which faces West so I get blistering direct sun in the afternoons when I train .... lately in this heatwave I have been holding off until sunset but that's not gonna be possible much longer as I will have to be getting up earlier for work and therefore crashing out earlier in the evening .... gonna have to rethink the gym setup and try and find space in the back yard I suppose

Not covered. But, after 4pm the trees block the majority of the direct sun. Also, I'm use to being out in this. My job for the past 20 years has been a primarily outside job. Only since late January has my job turned to a more desk jockey job and sit in a car driving job. I kind of miss the physicality of my old job... And I've had to adjust my cal's significantly due to less activity.

Your equipment isn't rusting?

Yeah it rust. Not a big deal to me. The rack I've had for over 20 years. My barbell and plates are mostly from the 1950's. I clean up the bar and plates about once a year and that's it. I actually would love for the rack to rust away so I can buy a nice one, but until then I'm a cheap skate. The breeze, watching the boats, hearing the birds, watching the cats, etc really makes working out outside so enjoyable. If I really get too hot I just jump in the pool too...lol can't do that at the gym.
I really do like the gym though for certain exercises. It would be impossible for me to do legs at home like I do in the gym. Same for Dumbbells over 80. Or lat pull downs.

I hear ya. I don't have a view quite like yours or a pool to jump into but I do enjoy training outside .... and lately I have had a nice view of the moon and stars during my sessions. I think once I can afford it again I will join a gym just to do legs .... can't really get the leg workout I want at home.

I want one, and it looks like it'll have to go on the back porch. Which sucks because it gets so hot here. lol

Of the garages, wife won't let me get rid of the pool table that is never used and I won't get rid of the tools I may need at any moment. lol

A man would have to turn in his man card if he got rid of his tools.

I used to do home remodeling and manage my rentals. I have a 20' x 40' shed packed. It'd make a hell of a gym.

I built (way overbuilt) a chicken coop a few months back and lately I've been looking at it and thinking I could build something like that but with a much stronger floor for me in the back yard also .... perfect little dungeon training room. Ultimately I would love to pour a concrete pad for the floor but that would not be cost effective so I am thinking of going with plenty of pier blocks and a double layer of 3/4" plywood for the floor. Final dimensions somewhere in the 12'x14' range should be sufficient. That way I can get out of the direct sun in the summer and outa the rain in the winter. Hell I overbuilt the chicken coop with an 8' foot roof which I later found was completely unnecessary for chickens but 8' would be great for a weight room and would fit a power rack nicely as well.
Still just a thought at the moment but a few more hot days in the sun and I may start construction ;)

12x14 pad out of concrete done at 4" thick wouldn't cost that much if you did it yourself. Do it in 6x6 sections as time and money permitted.

Only issue is it being in the back yard with fairly limited access from the front of the house .... so it would either have to be hand mixed and that's a sh*t load of concrete bags or pumped in. I used to own a landscape construction company so I definitely know how to do it but even a rental mixer wouldn't be able to get to the area I am thinking of. So add the cost of ordering in the concrete to the cost of a pump to get it to the spot and it gets a bit expensive.
Hell if it was in the front yard I could just have the concrete truck back right up and be good but no room out front for any structures of any kind.

at 12x14x4" its a tad over 2 cubic yards of concrete .... a short load from a concrete company but a huge amount if mixed by hand using bagged ready mix.

About 90 (80lb) bags of concrete ..... that would be a workout in itself ;)

You could always build it with wood. Lots of beams, concrete block support, and double up the plywood. If you put concrete down you'd have to put plywood and rubber anyway.

That is my plan. Plenty of pier blocks and a double course of 3/4" plywood. If I double up on the usual pier block layout and use good pressure treated 4x4 beams I think I should be fine. Hell .... it will only be 6" off the ground max so if I do drop a loaded barbell through the floor it won't be that big a deal.

Got my back workout in this morning at the gym.

120 x 10
140 x 10 yeah, I went heavy on these...

In and out and not too taxing.

Not so taxing, yeah... Nice work Brian.

Jealous of the view and ability to go jump in the pool mid workout. Much less look at boats and the water... Sounds awesome!

My garage gym is coming together. The garage is the only area I have to myself. I mean I could take over something in the house but not worth the trouble.
Right now I have the rack with lat pulley & dip attachment, 2 benches one has a preacher curl & leg curl/extension attachment too. Just got the 75lb Iron Master Db set, an MD resistance band set, Slastix battle ropes, a large truck street tire with rope attached for dragging and pulling. Have an ab machine, elliptical, health rider, heavy bag, speed and agility ladder with resistance bands, and about a 150-200lb rock.

I need to build a set of parallel bars and monkey bars in the back not only for me but so my daughter can work on her strength stuff for gymnastics. Also need to get some rubber flooring and build a prowler type pushing sled. Once I have a prowler like sled that I can do more pushing and pulling GPP I will use that for a bulk of my leg work volume.

All of this talk about home gyms makes me want one! I'd definitely take a view like Brian's!!

I'm one lot off the intra-coastal waterway. See some nice boats sometimes. I hate the pool. Wish I never had bought this house. I need to re plaster the pool(about $6k) and just spent $600 on a new multi port valve and change out of sand in the filter. Also, the pump is acting up, probably will need a new motor. Then the chemicals, the increase on the light bill from running the motor all the time, and the time spent cleaning it. It's not worth it...
I wish I had a huge shop, half for my tools, the other half for a home gym. I'd be in heaven!

Yeah, I had sticker shock when I got the quotes. Does come with a 7yr guarantee and they say if maintained should last 15. Looked at epoxy painting but that's about $3k and only guaranteed for 3 years. Such a waste of money...

Yeah I am jealous of the pool but not the maintenance. Unless in a position the money wasn't much of a concern I can't see me having one either. I do have a hose and a sprinkler I could run through when hot and not have to mess with 6k. Maybe that will have to do. :)

Heavyass Leg day!
And I've got a lot of Laborish type work to do today...lol

Hack Squats
150 x 15
240 x 12
330 x 10
420 x 10
510 x 10
600 x 10
690 x 5
Had to take a few minutes after that last set to keep from passing out. Got pretty light headed

Leg press
360 x 12
450 x 12
540 x 12
630 x 10
720 x 10
810 x 8
900 x 5

Leg extension
120 x 15
135 x 15
150 x 15
165 x 12
180 x 12
195 x 10
210 x 10
225 x 10

Seated leg curls
120 x 15
135 x 12
150 x 10
165 x 10
180 x 10

Finished and out of the gym in 68 minutes. I think this is the fastest I've done this much weight for this many reps.

Catching up ... Home gyms rock .... Pools don't.... Heavy lifting rocks! SMHS!

Damn.. soon you'll have a membership fee for the neighbours!

Chest workout didn't go quite as planned. Was pretty beat when I got home from working outside all day but gotta get the workout in.

Incline Barbell bench press
135 x 15
135 x 15
185 x 10
205 x 10
205 x 10
225 x 8 - these felt heavy.
245 x 5 - geez, these really felt heavy
255 x 3 - I was straining on these(unusual for me)
225 x 6 - couldn't even get 8...

Incline DB presses
60 x 20
80 x 15
80 x 10
80's are as high as my DB's go. I'm zapped so just stopped here before I get injured.

Smart to stop before injury. Considering your lifts have been quite heavy lately and combined with hot weather, this session was still productive.

I've had such a crazy weekend, I fell behind.

We have the same pool problems! lol

I have to re-line mine, and the motor went out today, as you know.
