Strange underskin blotching.

I wanted to ask, to see if anyone else experiences what I have noticed. This has happened to me on a few occasions, most recent being two days ago. As I was working out, I noticed a strange coloring on my delts, down to the top, outside portion of my biceps/triceps. The color was a light to medium grey, and at first looked like some paint had rubbed onto my skin. As I used my towel to wipe down, the color would not come off. I realized it was actually under my skin, and was in blotches.

The times this has happened, has been when my muscles have been pumped, and my body fat at, or below 14%. I'm thinking it may be blood, but the blotching is what puzzles me.

I was just wondering if any bro's here have noticed this happening to them, or if they may know what it is. I'm not concerned at this point, just curious.

that is interesting because just the last few weeks i have noticed a discoloration on the inside of my elbows. i noticed it on both arms, mine is a light brownish pink color. i thought i was some fungus or something. it was spreading up my arm for a while. but now it is just sitting still. it doesn't look bad just blotchy. i'm just putting lotion on it and hoping it will eventually go away.

My discoloring goes away after a majority of the blood dissipates from the muscles. That's why I'm thinking it's blood. However, the grey color is kind of shinny as well. At first, I thought it was paint from the weight plates. It was almost the same silverish color.

If it might be a blood issue, you may want to get tested for sickle cell anemia. If you happen to be African American, you should defiantly get tested as it is very prominent among young black males.

Does it hurt at all or impede circulation?

It doesn't hurt, or impede anything. In fact, I wouldn't even notice it, if weren't for the mirrors in the gym.

And as D said, I'm just a mixed cracker. However, anemia has run in my family. I have had blood tests in the past, last one a few months ago, and never had any issues though.

Are you a big dude? Something similar happens to Jay Cutler. It's very evident in one of his videos. His cameraman even freaked out about and Jay later explains what it is to put everyone's mind at ease.

He said he had a doc look at it and everything. He said it was something to do with oxygen trying to escape and has alot to do with his size. Its harmless and only happens when he works out.

Looks on the video almost like internal bleeding. Sort of deep purple little blotches here and there.

Hmmm, thanks OF. That sounds like what I have. Not to brag or any thing, but yeah, I'm a so-so big dude. Mainly upper body big. I'm going to have to get Cutlers video and check it out.

But I can't help it...I'm dead sexxy! :D

I noticed the blotches again today after doing flat DB presses. My shoulders were very pumped. Went away after a couple of minutes. Like I said, I'm not worried about, was just curious. I guess that's the only thing Jay Cutler and I will ever have in common...LOL.

hmm, the only thing I can think of is something I have, tinea versicolor, which is a skin fungus (yeah I don't like the sound of it either). My Doc said I probably got it from the gym, people not wiping down machines or tanning beds correctly, much like athlete's foot except it doesn't itch. I notice mine as a patch of skin on my back that doesn't tan, not sure about the color though because it just looks a little paler than the rest of me, like a birthmark almost. I have been using Nizoral cream to try and combat it, although it hasn't helped or hurt, it just stays the same and doesn't bother me. If you have good insurance, I'd see the dermatologist to try and see what it is, JMO :)

I don't know if what I have is blotching or bruising, but for the past 2 or 3 days, my left quad seems to be bruising or something out of nowhere..1st it was like 2 small ones, now theres like 5. Maybe I am just beating the **** out of myself during sleep who knows. It has me wondering though. Mine is a dark color however.

I watched it again. The video is "New, Improved and Beyond".

He states that the doc told him that there is a substantial amount of scar tissue in his muscles from the constant tearing down and repairing process. This makes his muscle tissue extremely dense and tough.

When the muscle gets pumped there is alot of oxygen being delivered to the muscle and thus needing to leave. The density of the muscle tissue makes it difficult for the oxygen to leave so it builds up causing the scary looking blotches.

These blotches to me look like little black and blue bruises or internal bleeding. They are quite visible throughout many of the workout scenes in the video. The camera man even zooms in on them at least once.

Cutler states "It's just a part of being big. It keeps people guessing I suppose."

sounds as if these are probably from injecting I'd think, just a BS excuse from the doc for public consumption. Maybe I'm wrong, but that would seem more likely from such a surely heavy drug user, no?

It could be blood escaping from the tiny capillaries in your skin. If that was the case, it could leave little 'cayenne pepper' spots that would fade to brown, from iron molecules left by the red blood cells.

It's called capillaritis and its a genetic thing, can be brought on by exercise. Ive got little brown freckles around my ankles, a byproduct of gaining weight really fast and working on my feet 12 hours a day.

You said the color seemed grayish though - blood under your skin can be a purplish gray...I'd check it out with your doc just to be on the safe side.

First off, thanks for the replys dudes. I really appreciate it.

These blotches range from about a dime to nickle in size. There are usually about 5-8 clustered. I've noticed it before years ago and forgot about it. Just recently have I noticed it again, almost during each workout. I'm almost certain it is a blood and oxygen issue, but will probably get it checked when I go in for my next physical.

Yeah BigV, it's more grayish. I seem to notice it more when my arms/shoulders are tan too. Right now they are kinda dark. That part just doesn't seem to make sense.

I think I have this, cuz before mine were purple/reddish like a bruise, and now are brownish.....But they are larger then freckles.

So what do you do for either of these issues the gray spots or this one? I am assuming it is relatively harmless

Yeah, more like freckly blotches, right? (see the attached pic) Yeah, that's capillaritis. According to my doc and everything Ive read about it, it is asymptomatic and harmless - as long as there is no edema associated with it. Do you have some varicose veins in your legs? I always have, and I'm assume the two issues are related. In fact, some of those brown blotches overlay a varicose vein in my ankle.

There is no known cause, and no known cure. It's blood leakage caused by genetic deficiences in the minute capillaries of the skin, which could have blown out from rapid weight gain, heavy lifting, prolonged standing, or a combination of all three. The skin reabsorbs the blood, but iron molecules are left behind causing that brown stain. It will go away, but it will take a LONG time, its almost like a tatoo. Im going to look into getting them removed via laser therapy eventually.

Ive been taking Horsechestnut seed extract and using Horsechestnut extract cream - they contain the compound aescin, which has been proven in clinical studies to increase the strength of lower leg veins. I also wear graduated compression socks if I know Im going to be on my feet a lot.

By combining these methods, it seems like the spots on my feet have faded a bit, its worth a try.

Ahh, links not working. I guess that site doesn't like to share. Can you post up the links address?

Ha! Those bastards!:)

The lower right pic , "Lichen Aureus" looks like what's on my feet.

Note the quote from the site:

The cause of capillaritis is usually unknown. Occasionally it arises as a reaction to a medication, a food additive or a viral infection. Capillaritis may develop after exercise.

Okay, that's nothing what what I have looks like. Mine doesn't turn any other color except for the grey/silver, and goes away once the pump goes down. Hmm..I'm going to have to get and watch Cutler's video OldFart was talking about.
