Slicin' and Dicin'

I walked in and said start with lat pull downs, go light weight, just do the work and you can go home

Next thing I knew I was going way too hard lol.

Spent the rest of the day working on the deck, made really good progress before moving over to the diy watering system on my wife's garden. Got inside just in time to catch the Army's 250th Parade. Super cool to see the para troopers dropping in!

Father’s Day bro sesh with the boy💪😎👍
Happy Father’s Day

Hope you had a great Father's Day. I like deads on the same day as other back work. But it does make for a long session that way.
yeah for a couple years there I added some backwork to my deadlift day, but posterior, hamstrings, etc were still my priorities. so deads, back extensions, RDL's, etc. Now I'm trying to see if I can sorta flip the formula a little.

I'm feeling yesterdays chest work pretty well so I'm quite OK with my monday fasted rest day, lol.

Deck is looking awesome. You all are making me feel like a slacker, all of these projects to improve your homes, and my projects are repairing mine. I can't wait to be at a point I can start working on some landscaping and making the back yard an oasis for us. I have the room in the yard to make something nice out of it back there. I just need to be in a place to invest the time and money required to do so. Slowly but surely knocking down debt so this can become a reality.

OK so this is funny that you'd say that cause I was reading your updates on the roof repair and working on your car which I assume you did in your garage and I was thinking, there's no fukin' way I'm getting on my roof. AND I don't have a garage, so while that really sucks in a lot of ways (there's a story about a remodel years ago), it saves me a lot of money because I USED to spend all my time in my garage at my old home, lol.

I am really really liking this deck but it had to happen. the old deck was about 30 years old and rotting out badly. it had got to a point that I was doing repair work on it every year and it honestly needed to be rebuilt from the ground up because the joists were sagging and starting to rot finally too....

but then you spend all this money building a nice new deck to replace the old one and you realize, damn, I gotta keep the yard sorta nice too since I"m going to be using this deck and probably have people over, lol. it turns into this whole big cycle of chores, lol.

Warmed up with some DB curls, front rack DB squats and v squats.

V squats
5 x 10

Squats
5 x 135
2 x 185, 225, 255, 275
3 x 3 x 295
1 x 315

Leg press
10 x 270, 400, 500
15 x 360, 270

Gym was packed!
I'm happy with the 3x3, that's linear.
Leg press I tried to pick jumps that let me find 10+ rep sets.

Seems like such a silly thing to say but I'm starting to really enjoy the leg press.

Weight was 193 this morning. I opted to break my fast to have dinner with the wife and I figured a little extra fuel for today's squats wouldn't hurt.

I hear the stuff in that Mando line is good. I haven’t used any, but a couple guys at the gym were saying their products work really well. Ha, I had to mess with them, and told them, I thought y’all don’t stink as bad as you used to.😂

lol I hate to say it but I have old lululemon stuff from before they went all gender neurtral non binary fem soy boy garbage, and its over 10 years old but still doesn't stink. I can buy a new tshirt and its gone to $hit within a month or two.

part of the issue, aside from the fact that I go hard and sweat a lot, is that it then sits there in my car or gym bag all day until I can get it home and I don't do laundry every single day, which seems like a waste.

I have under shirts and underwear and socks that I have to throw away cause they get holes in them but my gym shirts never make it that old. they just get trashed from gym smell that I can't wash out!

those over priced lululemon shirts are like gold but they don't make them like they used to,...

Guys who use lifting gear don’t wash it, because that can ruin them - so some guys store them with scented dryer sheets in them between sessions. You could keep a box in your trunk and put them in the shirts until you wash them? See if it makes any difference.

honestly at this point... at the risk of smelling really pretty, that would be a worthwhile improvement 😂
sometimes I just figure my musk will attract the right things in life, other times I'm like this shirt isn't even going home with me. 😂

Historically I have taken 5s to somewhere around 260-265 but I don't think I've ever done 5 at 270+ or a 3x5 at 255. So regardless of whether it's a PR or not, I'm pretty happy with the current situation. Sets were probably 1-2 RIR

I was honestly spent after bench though.

Also dinner was
Lamb burger on the Traeger last night.

been dragging my ass all week. some of that is my fault cause we had great weather Tuesday and we finally had the deck furniture put back together so after the 6-8 months of building up to this moment I enjoyed that night fully just chilling on the warm almost summer night with my wife. we are usually in bed by 8:15-8:30 but as 9pm rolled around and it was still light out (and warm) I was like a 9yr old playing in the street and I just didn't want to call it a night yet.

I've paid for that all week 😂
Yesterday I wanted to hit back, or even arms, but I was still feeling doms in the ankles, calves, chest, all my work this week hit hard (good) so I figured the rest day was more productive than a subpar deadlift day.

Then we went home and experiemented with making some cheesesteak sandwiches. they were freaking good, but I can see some tweaks I want to change for my next attempt. 🔥 @GreenMachineX

Whats your take on the slingshot

Man, those cheesesteaks look delicious! You buy the meat chopped or did you buy a cut and chip yourself? Looks like a homemade chop - what cut of meat?

Whats your take on the slingshot

I'm the worst person to ask because I abuse it, but two scenarios for you:

a. I've had my boy use it since age 13. He looked like every 13 year old when he started benching with flared elbows and retarded shoulders and I think the slingshot reinforced better form personally. He looks pretty solid on bench now. just turned 16 1 month ago and he has a 235 raw bench and PR'd slingshot yesterday at 260. He made a 270 attempt as well.

b. when I do legit strength cycles I don't hold weight at 90%+ of my 1rm for a prolonged period of time I feel like I tend to go backwards. my last legit Cube cycle when I PR'd peak week was on week 6, I was using var and epi throughout that cycle and on week 6 I definitely DID not have a PR in me despie many reps PRs along the program. week 7 I hit my PR though. I could be wrong but I think its cause week 6 I was finally hitting that 90%+ effort and by week 7 I was more conditioned for holding heavy weight again.

so IDK. Its a tool and a shoulder saver. Hitting slingshot every session isn't going to make me stronger from the bottom position, but I definitely think it gives me some really good overloading exposure that is really easy on my CNS. Hitting 255 for a 3x5 or 225 for 10-12 reps is a lot harder on me than hitting a double at 300-315+ with the slingshot.

na my wife is not a ribeye fan (my favorite cut) and we had some in the freezer from the last cow we butchered so she pulled those out, sliced them thin, and we grilled them up with the veggies. Yesterday I finally got a chance to run a low and slow smoke on a big pork shoulder (7lbs). it had about 8hrs on the grill and honestly could have used one more but turned out pretty damn good.

You’ll have to smoke you a brisket next.😎👍

our pork looks good, with a good bark….perfect for barbecue.😜

thats the plan! I've been dying to try a low and slow smoke on this thing since I got it. there was a small learning curve. it definitely uses a full hopper of pellets over an 8+hr smoke. I think in a perfect scenario I would have started it at like 6am instead of 9am so it had an extra 1-2hrs to rest, but all in all no complaints! nowhere near as smokey as a traditional smoker or egg but still a pretty good finish!

I was thinking about this just now:

and remembered this weekend I had a major win with the wife. she was groping my tits like she normally does when we go to bed. then she stopped and grabbed hers. then she reaches to mine again, then back to hers. and I'm like what are you doing?

I'm measuring.

measuring what?

I'm trying to figure out if your chest is bigger than mine. 😂 😂

so then of course I had to do the same thing. I was like, I think yours are bigger.

yeah, but not by much.

how big are yours?

DD's

so then mine are still D cups?

well, they are measured different cause yours are more spread out and bigger in a different way but yeah probably.

😂😂

The next day at the gym when we were doing bench and chest I told my boy, on Sundays we work Chest cause if you want chesticles bigger than her titticicles, you gotta be SWOLE!

Short lunch session. That 325 was nowhere near 1RM effort. Pulled the cord in what felt like the sweet spot. Probably had 20-40 more lbs in me.

Was gonna call it after squats and make it zippy but I got a text from a buddy. He's in the hospital with heart and lung issues. I felt obligated to get more work in.

Also my leg press numbers are always what I add to the machine. I ignore the "starting weight 118lbs" bit.

If I were on a strength cycle, I know that bottom position is my weakness, I think the slingshot performance verifies that. So I wanted some more bottom work today.

Plus last session I capped my work sets at reps of 4,3,3 so I need to rotate a bit and see if I can bump that to 5s soon.

Fun thought, the day I hit 250 x 1 for a sloppy PR is probably still one of my top 3 most memorable PRs of all time.

So pausing it for reps feels awesome tbh.

The back/lat pump today was also awesome.

Any tips for saving a gym shirt from b.o.? I hate throwing them away but man once my body heat rises the stench comes out
Yes, get yourself a mesh laundry bag like they use in football. It will allow your shirts to air dry a bit more and be less soured. It is the souring that gets stuck in the fibers of the clothes. You could even hang the bag off of your antenna or something so it can breathe even more, or keep it in the trunk so it doesn't smell up the interior of your car. However, allowing the clothing to dry before the bacteria gets out of hand should help with that a lot. So a football style laundry bag would probably help a lot.

I think the green eggs are the legit way to go for the purist! and for what we spent on the Traeger we could have probably gone green egg instead lol. I have been using a Komado style like the egg for many years now (Akorn by chargriller) and I have really loved it, but after so long it's rotting out in so many places I dont' think its worth the repair parts anymore. i've been through three grates and other parts already.

The traeger was a gamble.... it seemed like a potential happy medium where my wife could just "turn it on" like propane, but we'd also be able to do low and slow smokes like the egg... While i do like the Traeger, my only real complaint so far is that it takes a long time to reach temperature and struggles to hold it if you open the door too much to flip burgers, stir onions etc. I'm hoping to do my first long smoke job on it this weekend for the real test!
Get yourself some firestone or fire bricks to line the interior of the traeger, this will add mass to keep your temperature a lot more stable when you have to open and close the grill. it will also hel with cooking in the winter when you would normally lose a lot of the store head right out of the holes because the traegers and other pellet grills all tend to be very low mass metal they do not hold heat well. As far as developing a bark, it won't be as good at making a thick bark as a true smoker but the cook times will be a lot more consistent. I think to really get a good smoke in them you almost have to add some wood chips in the inside of the grill with the meat. Also if your traeger doesn't have the smoke stack order one separately and you should get a better bark by closing all of the other air holes off and just using the smoke stack.

this makes sense and is a great idea too. I'll often take some of my clothes out of my gym bag when I get to my car after a session and sorta lay them out in the back of the car so they can dry out some so this adds up.

that's a fantastic idea. my wife got me a castiron skillet made for these grills and that right there was a game changer. I was able to get amazing sears out of the burgers that day. guys in the traeger group on fb are a bunch of clowns. "I don't know whats wrong with people who think one grill can do everything". well, I spent a shitload of money on it and if I can't cook a steak on it then I don't want it, lol. It just takes learning how to cook with the tools you got. so far I have been able to do fish, steak, burgers, veggies, and that pork shoulder so I"m pretty happy with it!!

I think to really get a good smoke in them you almost have to add some wood chips in the inside of the grill with the meat.

Also if your traeger doesn't have the smoke stack order one separately and you should get a better bark by closing all of the other air holes off and just using the smoke stack.

these are great ideas. I think our model is the "silverton xl" or something like that, fairly large with a "super smoke" option if you keep temp at 225 or lower although it's nowhere near as smokey as my komado style but still pretty good.

Trying to remember to add the Legpress starting weights gets muddy in notes; it’s just easier to record added weight, assuming you use the same one routinely.

this makes sense and is a great idea too. I'll often take some of my clothes out of my gym bag when I get to my car after a session and sorta lay them out in the back of the car so they can dry out some so this adds up.

Yeah, I think it will probably help with you t-shirts.

Of course people say stupid things like that, BUT they advertise that it is good at all of those things. So there is no reason to expect to have problems with doing anything advertised as a function of the grill / smoker. I think anyone who does research when getting a pellet grill realizes you are not going to get the same bark from a pellet grill, but the flavor, and cook are often quite good regardless of how thick the bark is. I definitely agree these pellet grills are not great at searing. So I can see how the cast iron skillet would be a game changer in that regard. They are definitely a good option for someone who wants good enough, but the reality is if you want something to be great at something it should be designed for that specific use, and not trying to be a jack of all trades. A handy man is awesome for general repair, but if you need your foundation leveled you aren't going to look for a handyman to do the job. So sure, there is a reasonable thought process there, but the deal is they advertise it is good at all of these things and actually some things it is just sufficient at. I would LOVE to have a grill for every specialty and a pizza oven too. It is just not a realistic option for most consumers. That being said, I have a pellet grill, a 36 inch Blackstone grill, and a 22 inch Weber grill, and I use all of them for different reason and uses. I am going to get the pizza maker option for the 22 Inch Webber grill. One of my co-workers got one a while back and loved it. He made pizza a couple times a month with it. Unfortunately he passed away or I would have someone to borrow from to see if i like it. It isn't ridiculously expensive but it isn't super cheap either. I just want to know if it is "good enough" for the trade off on taste, and price which y impression from my buddy is that was the case.

Having a dedicated pizza oven at a home residence that owns a traditional full-size kitchen oven has to be one of the goofiest things I’ve ever heard of. Not the maker accessory that goes in your grill, but I mean a truly purpose-built outdoor pizza oven 😂

Yesterday (Friday) did not lift but finally got to play my once a year game at Chambers which works out to about a 7 mile walk. I forgot to turn on my run keeper app until we were already into it a bit but I like to track games we walk to get an idea. Got home and fell asleep on the couch for like 2hrs.

Yeah, I can see it if affluent enough to have tons of space, and you use it regularly but for your average Joe, it is absolutely excessive. I get it if you come from an Italian family and it is tradition or something but other than that. Just something to spoil yourself with if it is a passion for you personally. My guess is there are tons of people who think we are nuts for spending what we do on our home gyms and parking our cars in the driveway just to have space for it. To each their own if they have the means, but yeah definitely not important enough for me.

Now what I would be down with was someone to "jailbreak" ovens so you can open the door during the self-cleaning cycle when it can get up to 900-1000 degrees. Then you could do true Napoletana pizza which is the only reason I would want a dedicated pizza oven. I love that kind of pizza. It is my favorite, especially eaten fresh just after it is made.

That looks like a fun session, I know a lot of people feel like training arms is not that fun or useful, especially a specific arm day, but if you aren't genetically gifted in the arms it is a great way to close the gap. Plus for me, I find them really fun days. I can push as hard as I want, extend the session if I want, and not worry about feeling toasted or run down. Plus the pumps are fun, and so obvious because they aren't competing with larger muscles for blood flow or nutrients. I like to toss some additional medial and or rear delt work on my arm day for the extra volume and frequency they can handle too. I have a wider waist so the wider my delts the slimmer my waist can look.

That's exactly where I am. Arms day, and chest/bench day are both sorta play days for me. I do go hard, I get a pump, I have to take a knee from time to time to breath but it's just super fun low stress low tax. Squats and deads are more of a challenge for me because they are so taxing.

I can get a killer pump on arms day with 30lb dumbbells for reps but I'm not going to deadlift 500lbs or squat 405 if I'm not putting in the work.

I don't care if I ever barbell curl 150lbs+ lol. It's about the fun of the game and the pump. But I know eventually I'll sink back into an focused strength cycle for squats and deads and it will be more mentally taxing chasing numbers.

I think its just a whole vibe, you know? Like my wife and her aunt love to spend a late afternoon/early evening just repetitively pounding out these little pizzas all day. Its the experience of making their dough from scratch, using fire to cook it (cathartic, and often a masculine thing. dead animal + fire). it has a certain smell, flavor, etc. But my wife really loves to cook and around once a year will pick up sashimi grade fish to make sushi at home as well. Which I find to be super annoying because it turns into a loud obnoxious party of young people but once they're done the pile of delicious food is enough to add 10lbs to the scale immediately.

Generally, I am a minimalist. if I were a bachelor, a cheapo, small, $99 propane grill would be enough for me to occasionally grill a dog or brat. Usually steaks taste better with a reverse sear on the cast iron and oven anyways. But cooking is her thang, so different tools and methods appeal to her.

we hit this italian place last time we were in AZ and she was really drawn to the giant real pizza oven with the huge flame and coals that they were pounding out bread and pizza with. I have to admit it does taste a bit better!
