The equipment revolutionizes the sport, which acts as a wild card. Also, you are making the assumption that head protection only gets better in terms of safety, which isn't the case. There has been a trend for sacrificing protection for better maneuverability over the past few decades. Pads don't increase striking force, they slow you down, and your momentum doesn't really change as a result.
The best example would be goalie helmets/masks, which brought forth the butterfly goaltending style. Prior to the 1960's, the goalies entire head and face were unprotected. Hell no you're not going to drop to your pads, and let your face take a shot. The current goalie masks which were popularized in the 90's, (with the "cat eyes") still don't offer the greatest protection. Some of the protection is compromised better vision and maneuverability. You'll see some goalies like Osgood and Thomas, who wear more unique helmets that offer more head protection.
Mark Messier, Dominic Hasek, and Chris Osgood have all had to special order Cooper SK-series helmets (i.e. the Tron helmets) because they stopped making them in the 80's. To this day, they don't make helmets that can touch the SK series in terms of protection. When it comes to weight, nothing builds your neck muscles like wearing an SK series helmet for the duration of a game.
In conclusion, injuries increase as a result of two things: (1) players make ballsier moves because they feel protected (2) players are sacficing safety for lighter pads.
You are assuming many things here. The pads today are much heavier than in the past by regulation. A player is not allowed to utilize these lighter pads such as the early 90.
Please point me to this trend, show me something. Considering the fact that in the NHL helmets for the longest time werent even required and concussions werent a big issue then because there was respect for the head. There is a neurologist on ESPN radio calling for going back to the days of no helmets. In the interview was an orthopedic surgeon from the NHL discussing the weight of the pads today vs. in the past and the upward trend of injuries. Sports science did a piece with the 80s pads and todays pads with a player skating as hard as they could and checking a force meter and funny thing is that todays pads transferred more force... like a car hitting you, or a train, which one do you think will drive through you more?
Physics and the NFL should tell you that heavier and slightly slower will drive through you more. Car/Train. Defensive Tackle/Wide Receiver. The theory you are presenting doesn't add up. We are also talking about ice which the change in momentum will be the least factor here.
So would you be on the side for minimal to no padding in these sports to maximize player safety/self-preservation/longevity? For example; Guy A isn't going to break their neck to land a massive hit on guy B.
Going with that theme..

I have always fell under the "they make those millions of dollars due to the risk of their sport."
It is a risky business....that is why he/she makes multimillion dollars doing it. I don't like to see anyone get injured; but I also realize that it comes with the money/fame/lifestyle/etc.
This has always been a subject that I have struggled with. I just hate the way the NFL is helping QB's in today's game. They really should just put flags on his hips and throw a red jersey on him. Today's NFL wants more points scored because people like touchdowns. They don't want defensive games to happen in the future. It has nothing to do with protecting players. Prime example is Tom Brady a couple seasons ago. Tom Brady gets hurt early in the season....Touchdowns/Money/Ratings/etc. drop. "We have to make a rule preventing things like this from happening again."
I love sports, it is a very big part of my life. However, you can't help but see how the money part is the real agenda behind "protecting players." They want to protect players but also add two more regular season games to the schedule? I believe that says it all.
That is my opinion on the matter. I am all for it getting back to the previous subject though.. :yumyum:
ok, i will detract from TandA long enough to comment: qb's are the only ones who should be protected, imo. take the colts for example-without peyton they are not even close to the same team. if i had bought season tickets and peyton got hurt early in the season, i would feel like my tickets were worthless. qb's are just too dammed valuable not take precautions to keep them from injury.

You are right. I was blending together a few different sports with some of my comments. I think we are also using different the definitions of "lighter".
In the 80's, hockey shoulder pads only covered the shoulders and upper chest. Nowadays they cover then entire torso.
When I was in highschool, there was a trend in NCAA lacrosse where offensive players would wear football shoulderpad liners instead of actual shoulderpads, and defensemen would wear essentially ace bandages for elbow pads. Helmets are getting "lighter" in terms of how many pounds are being stuck on your head, at least in the case of hockey and lacrosse. I know this for a fact. My CPro is about half the weight of the original Cascade. The old Bacharach weighed more than 5lbs. Materials technology has made leaps and bounds over the past several years and carried over in sports equipment.
Since momentum is the derivative of kinetic energy, it's all relative to the efficiency of energy transfer, which is difficult to quantify using only relative terms. Since all collisions in newtonian physics are calculated via momentum balance ice or ground shouldn't make a difference.
I think the kicker we didn't touch upon in previous banter was the fact that despite more padding to weigh down the players, they aren't getting any slower.
Alrighty, back to the TnA and EasyE whining about not being hung over.

QB's also make the most money. Their job is dangerous.
I agree with you from a fan stand point. I am just saying as far as owners and commissioners go it is just about dollars. Your comment about your 'worthless' season tickets if Peyton is out is a solid example.
Hockey didn't have helmets at all for the longest time and the helmet are relatively unchanged since their required adoption.
Have you worn one of the concussion helmets in the NFL now? I have worn one and they are a brick connected to your head, and those are going to eventually be adopted by all, not to mention the larger target in size with the new helmets. Plus, they don't help the concussion issue. The helmets are the product of the metaphorical lobbyist.

Since when the Fruitloop did IMDB start having a "pro" section that you have to pay a Fruitloopin $15/month for?!?!? Just went in to look up details on Zombieland 2 - because I'm awesome and care about you guys - and it's saying that it's only available on IMDBpro.
Shenanigans! I call shenanigans!!!!
I refuse to join LinkedIn - just another thing for me to be a part of. I have enough already. Are they applying for an IPO, too?
I know LinkedIn and Pandora are going corporate. I'm kinda nervous about how their business models are going to change.
I refuse to join LinkedIn - just another thing for me to be a part of. I have enough already.I used to use my Pandora app (Droid) a lot, till an "upgrade" that now includes more ads and actual ads interspersed between songs. That killed it for me. Now I just suffer with whatever I have on my iPod or pay a buck for something new if I get the itch.
rant-if i have to watch or listen to dagburned advertisements couldn't they at least make them just a little entertaining.
i record the tv shows i want to watch in advance and fast forward through the stupid ass ads. 1 more flo ad and i will puke.
