i hear that jogging can have a harsh impact on your legs and swimming is a great alternative. also swimming works more of your body than jogging.

thoughts/preferences?

I would have to say that swimming requires more calories if you go the same duration. If you have any leg problems, it will definitely be much easier on you than running. So if you can handle swimming (I know I cant :D), then go for it!

Pros of swimming to jogging is you get a more full body workout and it's relatively free of joint stress.

The Con is that it's usually not as accessible as running so it's hard to just up and decide to swim etc.

I'd pick swimming over running any day.

I second that- Swimming is far less damaging to your joints :)

... and you don't get all sweaty (which doesn't mean you don't sweat). But it can badly mess up your hair, so make sure you always wear a cap. :D

If you want something thats less stress on your joints and doesn't burn a lot of upper body muscle, which is what it sounds like you dont... There is water aerobics. Which most YMCA's or some pools have. These use floating devices to allow you to do a cardio workout in the water using mostly your legs. Trust me, a lot of old people do it... but it will still kick your ass like... whoa :)

im goin to college next year (baylor) and they have a badass rec center with a pool, i figure ill have to take a shower after i jog anyways...so why not swim laps instead. it will be a nice change after running around a track for the past few years

Man....I need to get back into the swimming pool one day.

It is an amazing anerobic exercise that definetely works out a lot of muscles that are usually neglected during weight training. I would definetely recommend swimming for a form of cardio and also to increase overall health. If you have the acess to use a pool, take advantage of it.

Man, I use to have a beautiful tan. LOL.

I must admit, there was nothing like the feeling of winning a mile race. What I don't miss is the 400IM, damn that sucked.
