it will get better hopefully...last few workouts I was expecting to be sore the next day, not as sore as I expected---k1ngslayer???
I’m hoping so! I’m planning some modified workouts. Aiming to hit the gym tomorrow and do some stuff on benches or machines that I don’t have to really use my core.

It’s only been 2 days and mentally it’s killing me! I’m used to feeling invincible, working my butt off, picking up and moving whatever I want within reason of course. Today the wife and I were outside doing some planning for a front walkway and garden. I tried to be stubborn and carry some garden stones over well after 3 my brain finally kicked in and I had to just sit there while my wife moved them!

Week 3 Day 3

I went for the gym this morning, I was able to hit my bench presses 5x185, 5x205, 5x230. I got thinking maybe my back was loosening up a bit. Went to do some machine shoulder press instead of my regular B.B. OHP. They have independent arms and as I went for the second set I felt the pain in my left side. I had really hoped to get back into it but I need to be smart and think about the big picture. I’m away at a cottage this week Thursday-Sunday so I was going to be missing gym time anyways but I’m going to start it early and take the full week off. Sorry to the people at OL for losing a week out of my log that I won’t be training. I’ve been pushing hard lately so hopefully the rest benefits me overall and not just my back so I can finish this log hard and continue my progress.

Thoughts on KS

Without a doubt I’ve been having some very deep sleeps! Waking up feeling rested and ready!

Yep will do! Unfortunately the fitness goals need to go on hold for a minute to get the back feeling good again!
Back injuries are probably like 75% of all gym injuries if I had to guess. Hope your back gets better.

I’ve been pretty lucky and stayed healthy until this one. A little rest and I’ll be back at it hard! Maybe a little smarter choices with weight and making sure my form is good!

Week 3 Day 4

Today was my oldest child’s bday so it was a day full of fun! I tried my best to keep my calories as long as possible but on special occasions it’s just not my priority.

Back pain is definitely still there. Really trying to baby it and avoid aggravating it again. Spent some time this morning trying to stretch it out and I will again here shortly.

Thoughts on KS

Man I’ve been sleeping extremely deep! I’ve also been pretty tired the last couple afternoons. We went to a movie today (incredibles 2) and I fell asleep and missed the end of the movie! Lol. The back injury and just overall lack of exercise I’ve been able to do the last couple days really has my motivation down as well and my daily energy level.

Hang in there brotha. Injuries suck but you can find work-arounds and make gains in other ways without backsliding. Happy birthday to son or daughter!

Ya I hear ya man. Thursday-Sunday this week I wasn’t going to be able to hit the gym anyways so by taking today and tomorrow off as well it will give me a good stretch to rest it up. It will be the longest period I’ve missed the gym in I don’t even know how long!

Thanks man! My oldest is one of my daughters!

I feel you. I traveled for work and worked long days so couldn't get in a good workout and it sucked. Hate when I miss workouts.

Week 3 Day 6

Well got a call in the middle of the night and went to this for a couple hours

IMG_0873.JPG

With my back still being tweaked I avoided getting right up in the action. I’m starting to get a little concerned why my back isn’t healing up to a more normal feeling yet.

How long do most back injuries last? In the past if I’d hurt it a bit it would only be like 2 days

It definitely depends what type of back injury it is. I've had back injuries that heal in a week and others that take a couple months.

Well with my level of calories burned being extremely reduced as well as a little extra eating on my daughters bday I was feeling a little heavy so jus for yesterday and today I cut my calories back to 1750. Despite the cutback, my arms are feeling so strong and full today!

I am hoping and praying that after this weekend away I’ll be feeling better and ready to hit the gym Monday to get back at it and take advantage of this KS run!

This weekend is going to be a challenge, I’ll be away with my in laws and they cook sooo much food!!

They are bikini girls and children and not on K1ngs Slayer. ;)

I did one figure prep a few years ago, before I made myself into a fat powerlifter. I was at 1600-1700kcal for the last month and it sucked. From what I understand, a lot of people get a lot lower than that, which is crazy to me.

Hey Oconns28

I hurt my lower back squatting a few months ago. It took me about 10 days before I could do anything back related. I eased in with low weight (~50 lbs) goblet squats. If I felt any pain in that area, it was time to stop.

It’s okay now, but I don’t squat anymore. Goblet squats (~70 lbs dumbbell) get my heart rate up and legs some decent work.

I may go back to squatting eventually. I’ll stick to goblet squats for now. At age 61 squatting is not a priority for me.

Not sure if this story helps, but the point is to give the injury some time and ease back in when you can squat without pain.

Stay safe! Stay strong!

Hahaha fair enough!

Ya this is the absolute lowest I could go unless I had a crazy prize motivating me!

Not sure if it is a coincidence or not but I am feeling some serious muscle fullness today! No workouts or anything, just pumped arms! Haha

181.6. Got it back on track after a bad week with pretty much zero exercise!
Feeling good and lean but full muscles! I am going to continue to baby my back for the rest of this week just doing stretches and hopefully be ready to crush the gym on Monday!

Week 4 Day 4

I’m home!

Well after posting that my back was feeling better things went south. I was asked to flip over a paddle boat to get the water out. I thought my back was feeling good enough that I easily could. I started to lift it and honestly i could feel the weight wasn’t much but after lifting it part way I felt that same familiar pain and I had to sit it down.

At this point I’m not sure what to do, I’m extremely frustrated that it isn’t healing back to 100%. The QL seems like such a key muscle that it’s really going to screw with me trying to workout.

I’ll have to figure out how to adjust all my exercises

since starting k1ngslayer I've been getting a great endorphin rush about 15-20 minutes into run...just curious if you are getting that affect also?

I ran Friday and Saturday, first 2 main runs I can remember since starting KS. I felt great getting out but I didn’t notice anything extremely different. I was running in a very peaceful area around a lake so that would have an influence in how much I enjoyed it for sure. Also my 5km runs only last roughly 25 minutes

man, that is a tough one-hard to describe...kinda like a 2nd wind thing where you feel lighter and breathing becomes easier and any pain you have is lessened.

Week 4 Day 5

Worked an afternoon shift tonight and hit the gym after. Figured I’d try and Pull workout and had to majorly tweak it because I wasn’t about to do deadlifts or Meadows Rows with the way my back is feeling.

I did some neauteal grip machine rows, close grip lat pull downs, lying leg curls, straight arm pull downs and some cardio. I tested out some cable curls and felt it in my back so canceled them.

Still pretty frustrated, happy to be able to get a workout in but it’s just not the same as I’m used to. I like intense hard workouts but I’m babying the poop out of my QL.

Thoughts on KS

Feeling lots of muscle fullness and feeling good

Week 4 Day 6

Push *

Bench - (5/3/1) - 3x190, 3x220, 3x245
Leg Ext - (3x12-14) - 3x14x170
Delt Machine - (3x10-12) - 3x12x80
Trice Ext - (3x13-15) - 3x15x90 RP 10+5
Machine Shoulder Press - 10x95 RP 6+4

* I went for a swim for 20 minutes at a different gym before this workout. Swimming and this workout was done fasted. I don’t like lifting fasted but I was short on time this morning
* Used a different shoulder press machine today that both move together and not hammer strength style where each arm is individual. Ended up using what seemed like a much lower weight but I’m also not giving it 100% worrying about aggravating my back even more

Thoughts on K1ng Slayer

What I’ve noticed
* Increased appetite
* Improved deep sleep and sleeping longer
* Muscle fullness
* Strength was going up, I was regularly adding weight or reps. *This was mainly noticed in the first 2 weeks, it’s been almost 2 weeks since I’ve hurt my back and have been limiting weight with zero chance of squatting or deadlifting
* I have had a couple over the top big meals and found that my body handled them very easily without feeling bloated at all
* Other than some minor urges for a bowel movement early which have now gone away I have noticed zero issues

Another note for today. I’ve decided to up my calories to 2600 per day. Up 200 from my original 2400. I’m not sure if the small 200 cal increase will help in recovery at all but I know it won’t hurt!

Question for you all

- It will be 2 weeks tomorrow night that I hurt my back. I’ve really tried to take it easy. I’ve been trying to roll it out with a ball as well as stretch but pain is still there. Much better than the first few days but it’s still pain that limits me and even as simple as just bending over can send a pain through and stop me in my tracks. I was reading and one spot suggested if pain lasts more than 2 weeks to call your Doctor. Well here I am... called the doctor today but they are closed until tomorrow. Any tips for recovering/healing it up?

Thanks!

Ya that’s my thoughts. I called earlier today but of course my close to retiring doctor isn’t working today so I have to wait.

Going to edit my wording on my last post, more meant if anyone has tips for how to recover/heal it vs doctor or no doctor

Perhaps go see a doctor. Curious question. Why up calories if with your back injury, it seems, that the amount of volume and power output from compound lifts has been reduced?

Yes it has been for sure, I have started a little extra cardio to try and make up for the difference. I’m trying my best to keep the overall energy expenditure in the gym comparable. I’ve been eating 2400 everyday. My weight would still go down on some rest days. This is really just a hope that maybe the small increase might make a small difference and to me if it helps my back recover sooner then it’s worth it.

I know you were part of the group for keeping calories the same throughout the log so sorry to you and those others, this is just what I’ve decided to try. I’ve never experienced a back injury like this that has taken so long to recover.(maybe it’s not long in the big picture but most I’ve done before is a few days) Hopefully everyone still wants to follow along and add input when they can, it’s always appreciated!
