New smut log😮

Smont

Legend
Sorry I meant smont log.

I'm managing to get fatter and smaller since I've been nursing some injuries. I did push the limits last weekend doing a strength event (farmers walk elimination ladder) and though I didn't hurt anything that day, I was hurting like a mother f***** two days later. As of yesterday everything felt good and I was itching to get in the gym so we're back in business.

Still babysitting my right knee and left shoulder but let's go!

First order of buisness, I'm going from TRT 150mg to 200test and 100npp just because I have a little bit left over and I need to make some orders for supplies if you know what I mean. Eventually this will turn into a high testosterone cycle with either primo, mast or EQ along side. But that's not going to happen for probably 5-6 weeks. For now it's trt + I guess.

I'm training with my focus on bench and deadlift and I'm also going to have a lot of work to do on my legs. Because I'm still nursing my shoulder a little bit I'm doing a 20° incline bench because it feels better and safe at that angle.

Yesterday's workout. SS=super set, RP=rest pause

Low incline bench 95x10,145x10,195x5, 235x4, 255x3,3,3 drop back to 195x3x3 with a 3 second pause at the bottom of every rep.

20° DB fly SS close grip bench 30's and 145 for 3 sets of 10 each

Deficit deadlift (3in deficit) with the hex bar
50x5, 100x5, 150x5, 200x5 no pain and easy peazy here.

Plate loaded hack squat, 90x 10,10,10 my knee feels a little weird when I break parallel, it doesn't hurt it just feels unstable and old 😂 this is a exercise I'm going to randomly throw into my workouts in the goal is to always do three sets of 10 with five more pounds than last week.

Bodyweight chins for three sets of 10

Hammer curls SS and pressdowns 30's and working up to the whole stack for 3x10

Incline dumbbell curl SS dumbbell skull crusher 20's for 2 sets. Didn't really count reps on this one and I didn't go to failure but I was just kind of tired and running out of gas at this point.

I had a lot of rest in between my sets the whole workout took almost 2 hours ideally though I can do this workout in about an hour and 15 minutes.

Diet needs a lot of work right now.
I've cut my caffeine intake down from 900mg daily to 150-300mg daily and eventually I'm going to drop caffeine completely for a couple of weeks this is all part of a little experiment for my sleep hygiene.

And I got a couple peptides in my top drawer I'm going to play around with for the next 5 weeks.

As of right now my training schedule is pull focused on Tuesday, push focused on Thursday, a little mix of both on Saturday.

I'm also going to hit the heavy bag and jog twice a week. I occasionally will do extra sets of pull-ups or extra stuff for legs on the days I do heavy bag or jogging. Eventually Sunday is going to turn into leg day once I feel like I can train legs at 100%

What’s wrong with your knee?
Few months back I tore my medial meniscus. For approximately the last eight weeks or so I've been doing a little bit of rehab stuff and some high rep constant tension squats where I basically just do quarter squats because if I go to parallel it hurts too much. I'm beyond that point now, but when I get below parallel it still hurts a little. I did a 510 Lb farmers walk on it this past Saturday and other than it being sore it held up. I do not recommend that I'm an idiot and I had signed up for a strength contest a long time ago and I ended up going to watch some of the kids I train and I ended up doing it myself. Luckily I escaped without another injury

The hack squat will be a really good way to build the quads while protecting the knee
So far it seems good. When I get below parallel I think it pinches that meniscus or something but it eliminates a lot of the risk for lateral movement the way you're in the machine. I've got this one actually set so that it bottoms out one inch below parallel just in case if something happens and I drop down I don't go all the way

I was really surprised I could do the defect deadlifts as well. That didn't seem to bother me at all and that had me going way below parallel, ass to grass. It's weird how one causes pain in the other one doesn't

For some active recovery today I walked 2.5 miles of shoreline at the beach and swam for a couple short bursts of about 10 yards at a time. 6-7 times

A new dawn, a new Smont log begins
I hope so, I've kinda not enjoyed the gym most of this year, all the setbacks killed my mojo. But it's time to mash the peddle and get it together. If I can stay healthy im teasing the idea of the ipa Connecticut Ironman push pull comp in November, even all beat up I can bench 325 and deadlift 500. 350+550 would be competitive at 198, I can definitely pull that off, probably more on both if I stay injury free. I know there will be 600+lb deadlifts but as long as I can total 900+ I don't think il be too out of place there.

Am I crazy or do you think that will be respectable #' for a 40+ 198 competitor, non tested divisions of course. I'm willing to mash the peddle on test and GH for a while. Thinking about a 8 week peaking routine hitting each lift with a variation twice a week.

Honestly I'm probably too fresh off this injury. But I'm even thinking about just treating it like a mock event and then if things are looking good maybe I go for it last minute

Yes a 900 push-pull at a lower men’s weightclass is definitely respectable; you won’t be out of place at a local meet at all with 800 even.

I routinely train for meets ahead of when I sign up for them, just keep an eye on the registration deadline, if it’s filling up, etc so you don’t miss out.

This stuff isn’t rocket science. You could have a primary bench day where you follow up the comp bench with some incline or closegrip work, then a secondary day where you do the other variation and some shoulder stuff. Just depends on how you want to lay things out, what you prefer, what muscles you need most.

Then deadlifts maybe a Trapbar day (maybe deficits even like you did) or something that doesn’t bust you up for more muscle volume, and a day where you practice the comp deadlift more for technique & lower volume. Pulling lots of conventional deadlift volume is usually a bad idea. Light or heavy, you don’t need a ton of reps with it. And most people shouldn’t pull heavy every week. Even people built well for that stress still need to adapt themselves to it.

ohhhh i like the idea of low incline bench... my old gym did not have this option. low incline db yes, but not with a rack. new gym is quite modular... I might have to throw these in so I can go a bit heavier in that slightly inclined position...

I think you're crazy to have to question this lol. we get stuck in a wind tunnel sometimes when we are only surrounded by other lifters. a 900lb push/pull for any human is great. Maybe not world stage competing with Thor and Dan great, but damn in a 40+/198 group I think it sounds quite respectable.

Been a long time since I saw actual comp numbers but I'm not surprised to see Hyde take it as low as 800 even. Thats 500/300 and no untrained 40+yr old at under 200lbs is grabbing 500/300 without putting in work!

Ah that’s tough man… but yeah there are specific rehab protocols for that kind of injury… good luck!

Yeah that’s exactly right; local competitions are for everyone. You’re going to see it all generally, mild to wild at a local show.

I saw a thing the other day on my social media feed, which probably means that it’s not actually true, but it said that only like 0.02% of the world‘s population will ever achieve a 315 squat. First, I thought that’s stupid and there’s no way it can be real, but if you walk around the mall and look around then you factor other countries full of billions of untrained people maybe . If that were to read how many people could obtain a 315 squad I would say that it’s the majority of males on earth could if they trained for it but most never will

Also saw a guy who weighed 180 do 585x8 on deadlift. He had baggy clothing on so looked real impressive if you didn’t look closely to tell that he had a powerlifting frame under the clothes. Some people are just genetically freakishly strong though (and again 99% of people don’t train so don’t know it)

that and I think 225 bench the ones that always pop up into my feed. Its probably fairly accurate. I had to bust my ass to break 315, personally. just my own observation locally it seems like people squat sub 250, or over 405 and bench like 185, or 335+ among my locals. very few are grinding that middle ground with me 😂

Watching that guy deadlift he made it look so easy. Looked like he was pulling 225 but it was 585. He also had perfect form and clearly had been training his whole life specially for that lift. I was impressed but it also made me feel like a weak POS

That’s because that middle ground is where years of grinding take place. And they either figure out how to train, and that training is 5lbs at a time & are content with that reality, or they don’t figure out how to train or become disillusioned that average efforts won’t yield exceptional results.

Because of where the competition is being held I have a feeling there's going to be some really strong people there. I honestly probably won't be going to the November one, but I'm training for it regardless and hopefully I'm up to it when it's time

Because I've been around a lot of bug strong ppl I often feel like I'm not that strong. I know on paper the numbers stack up, well. I know most ppl I've trained with can't out lift me. But because I'm not a powerlifter or strong man I always feel like I'm probably not going to stack up in certain things. I've won many strength comps, but the competition was always weak. Usually only one or two people to actually be competitive with me.

I did get out benched in comp by a 163lb bench specialist once. He did 385 and just missed 400. I could never bench with that wide of a grip though because it would definitely tear my shoulders

Pre-workout meal is Turkey, cheddar, and spinach on a sun-dried tomato wrap with hummus and stone ground mustard. Greek yogurt with a high protein granola, half a banana and a drizzle of honey

There certainly could be - some places are generally hotter beds for performance than others. The Midwest, Texas, pockets up down the East, South East, & West Coast. I mean there are strong people everywhere, but here nobody even pays attention to a guy benching under 300 or pulling under 500 at a local meet - it’s a majority of guys that can do that. Apparently in Canada a buddy was telling me it can be rare to see 308 (3 plates/side there) pressed at local meets.

The last meet I did last in STL, I only took 3rd in my class (242 Raw, Open age group) with a 1,603 total. BUT the biggest total of the meet was in my class, buddy I did my first meet with broke 2k raw for the second time after a layoff. There were a LOT of 600+ squats requiring 5-man spots. It was stacked.

The meet prior to that in Columbus, I totaled 1,522 or something in the same class but was like the 3rd biggest total overall on the day. Just depends on who shows up and where it is.
