Man Ticketed For Jaywalking After Being Struck Dies

POSTED: 9:43 am EST December 6, 2005

WASHINGTON -- A man who was ticketed for jaywalking after being struck by a car in Washington, D.C., has died.

Police said 73-year-old Charles Atherton, a renowned urban designer and former secretary of the U.S. Commission on Fine Arts, died at a Washington hospital over the weekend.

Witnesses said Atherton was badly injured and lying unresponsive at a busy intersection when an officer issued him the $5 ticket. A police spokesman told The Washington Post the ticket wouldn't have been written if the officer had known Atherton's injuries were life-threatening.

Over 40 years on the presidentially-appointed commission, Atherton contributed to the designs of countless monuments and projects, including the FDR Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the National World War II Memorial

Seriously. That's just fucked up.

That's the government for you. same thing after Katrina. They were lot less interested in delivering supplies and saving people's lives than they were in making sure everyone knew who was in charge. Seems like they spent just as much time diverting or outright turning help away from victims as they did delivering aid themselves.

Thats what i dont like about some police forces these days. Its all about showing who has the badge and that there in charge and not you. Crap like that just urkes me, the man could have been saved if he radioed in help, but nah he had to be a cock fondler and write him a ticket for 5 dollars, why even bother honestly?

The law is the law...

[The Captain stands to the side as a Boss fastens leg-irons on Lucas Jackson, recently captured after his first escape.]

CAPTAIN

You gonna git used to wearin' them chains after while, Luke, but you never stop listenin' to them clinkin'. That's gonna remind you of what I been sayin'. For your own good.

LUKE

Wish you'd stop bein' so good to me, Captain.

CAPTAIN

Don't you never talk that way to me! . . .

[after striking Luke and impelling him down a small slope, The Captain regains his composure and addresses the other convicts:]

What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach . . . So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it! And I don't like it any better than you men.

It's actions such as this one that give law enforcement in general a bad name. The dick probably issued the ticket to be "funny" and now he is probably getting **** from a lot of people. Only thing is, a large majority of people see this as what most, if not all, law enforcement agencies would do. Yeah, the law is the law, but there is such thing as "Spirit of the law" and "Letter of the law". This should have been treated how the "Spirit of the law" intended on it being enforced.

Dont worry Cuffs...many of my best gym buds are cool ass cops :D

We know you're not all nutz, its just the damn hippies in the ignorant, idealist, socialist media try to portray you that way for some reason only God knows. WTF do they hate about cops?

oh, yeah, blame the HIPPIES, of all people....

It's just as simple as this: assholes and morons shouldn't carry badges, and if there's any justice in DC (doubtful, I know) then this clown will have his (or her, let's be fair) shield pulled ASAP.

Cops are by and large incredibly decent people trying their best to do one of the worst jobs imaginable and stay sane in the process.

May all gods bless each and every one of them!

Cuffs and his brothers & sisters in blue don't deserve to have **** like this DC streetwalker staining their shoes, much less tarnishing their reputations

I have always learned that law enforcement has one primary goal: to ensure public safety. This is why officers are given the authority to enforce laws. It sure sounds to me like this officer in question forgot about this.

A person might begin to question the validity of a cops job after recieving two speeding tickets and being let off the hook for a hefty sum both times. gotta meet that quota dont you boys and **** everyone else

Man that cop REALLY screwed up, I'm not in the best position to criticize but calling for some help would've been the first thing on my mind, it's only a $5 ticket anyway, why give a $5 ticket at all ?

LOL...sorry, I blame everything on hippies. When I say hippie, I mean communist, socialist, idealist, pothead, overly politically correct, and all kinds of people. I just call them all hippies now, because well...that's what most of them were 40 years ago :)

That's pretty f'd up if it's true.

But to be a Devil's Advocate for just a second (not that I believe it), I am not sure I know the entire story. (I don't 100% trust the media).

Example:
1. The old man may have been walking around and feeling fine, possibly in shock, then collapsed after the ticket was issued.

2. Was the old man taunting the cop after the "hit", and that's why the cop issued the ticket. Only after this, the old man fell down?

3. It's possible that this is the old man's 10th time purposely getting hit by a car in hopes of suing. Doubtful, but I'm just saying...

What was the timeframe from him being hit to him being dead? Hours or days or weeks?

Yes, yes, the media said "witnesses" saw the officer write the ticket while the old man was done. Why would I question the media? I'm sure they wouldn't have written it that way just to get a shocking story out. :)

It's not like the media "skews" and misinterprets stories when it comes to the realm of sports supplements and their ilk. :)

Again, I am not defending the cop - and I'm sure cops make mistakes just as much as "regular" people do. But when it comes to the media, I can't help but wonder what they left out in order to help their story.

Just remember how the media represents everything related to bodybuilding. Then realize that they work the same way with other topics as well. There's no story if there's no contraversy.

BTW - I have 2 questions on this.

1. If a drunk driver gets into an accident, does the cop still write him a ticket? I mean, after the ambulance is called, does the guy still get a ticket, or is it all forgiven because he was hurt?

2. $5 jaywalking ticket was questioned. Does the cop have a choice in how much a person has to pay for a ticket, or is the price set by some committee? Serious question, as I'm not a cop. Yes, a $5 jaywalking ticket sounds funny, but if the cop is issuing a jaywalking ticket, do they get to arbitrarily decide the fine?

It's possible that the old guy caused a bunch of cars to be damaged and scared the crap out of the drivers because he was crossing an intersection illegally. Even though he possibly wrote off 3 cars and injured 1 of the drivers, the only ticket the cop could write was the jaywalking ticket.

OK, I must be having a boring day at work if I wrote this much on this topic, LoL...

this is the part left out of the story posted. i saw this story on headline news (CNN) and the report said the guy was hit cuz he wasn't watching where his stupid ass was going, he got up feeling fine, was issued a ticket for jaywalking, an hour or so later the fucker dies from internal injuries. they find in his pocket another ticket from a previous jaywalking incident. apparently, he didn't learn the first time. **** him, i would have a wrote him a ticket too. darwin prevails.

Good info here, makes plenty of sense.

No, the fines are preset and yes if a drunk driver gets into a car accident causing himself injuries and even going to the hospital will still recieve all the tickets for the laws he violated.

The addition to the story makes more sense but funny how the media can get away with posting half truths.
