Lost a friend today

Actually he was more like one of my children. He was my bassett hound, Sebastian. He was 12 years old and Tuesday he had an accident, he fell coming in from outside, he fell backwards off the steps and slipped a disk. This left him down in the back hips. We tried to give him some anti inflamatories to ease the swelling and see if that would get him back on his feet but it didn't. So today I had to do the hardest thing I have ever had to do, take something I care about to be put to sleep.
I still remember the day that we brought him home, the little 7 lb big earred mess maker... He never met anyone that he didn't like and loved kids, to the point he would be a pain in the ass when kids were around but now that he is gone, it is very strange to not have him sitting at my feet or my wife's feet. Just wanted to tell you guys what a good dog he was and that he will be missed

Sorry bro, I feel your pain. I had to take my toy poodle that ive had since i was 7 to be put to sleep a month ago. She had a really bad kidey infection.

Oh man that sucks. I'm sorry to hear that, I love Basset Hounds; one of my favorite dogs along with Bulldogs and Bernese Mountain Dogs.

I have two cats currently, and if either one of them died I'd be a miserable wreck. I remember I had a cat previously who died at the ripe old age of 24/25 (yes she was older than I was) about 5 or 6 years ago. I was depressed for more than a week following. Pets ARE family members, and losing one can hurt just as bad as losing a sibling, a parent, or a child.

Wow, sorry about that man, I love basset hounds, but when I was young my parents wouldn't let me get one - made me get a dachsund instead. He was great though, but had back problems and diabetes toward the end. I'm looking forward to getting my kid's thier first dog sometime soon hopefully.

i just lost my rat to cancer. i know its a freaking rat but he was cool it like to fetch it acted more like a dog than a rat. r.i.p.

Feel for you, Brother... wept like a baby when my 15yo Newf passed-away in 2000. She was the oldest Newf in the US at the time. I was in NYC on business when my sister called to let me know she was slipping. I immediately flew back and she passed 5 minutes after seeing me. You will always have the memories.

Bro that sucks, Im sorry to hear that. My dog Mickey is a 15-year old Black Lab/Irish Setter mix and I know he can't be walking around for too much longer. Ive had him since he was only a few weeks old, I know Ill be very forlorn when he dies.

Hey Big -- that's a solid mix; I knew a guy who had an Irish that lived to 18! I gave her 200mg of Co-Q10 every day for something like 7 years. Her vet said she had never seen a Newf over the age of 11. Anyway, the Co-Q10 really helped with quality of life.

Sorry about the loss Matt, I grew up with a lot of dogs in my family. We would bring the sick ones home from the vet, and care for them until they passed.

Hey Matt D thats sad to hear bro... I'm sorry this happened...

Life sucks sometimes, things happen when we don't want them to... but you're a tough guy and you'll be ok I'm sure. Just don't forget the little guy, as I'm sure you won't.

Take it easy.

My German Sheppard is about 12 years old and like a lot of sheps, has bad hips. He's starting to fall a lot while walking and it breaks my heart to see it.

I keep thinking about putting him down, but I don't see that "I'm ready to check out" look in his eyes. So I'm holding off.

I know when it comes to that, it will be one of the worst days of my life. I know what you're going through.

Sorry about your loss Matt. I know how it is, not only to lose a family member (yes, pets are considered family in my home), but to make the decision to put them down. We raise Dachshunds, and there backs are very fragile, especially as they get older.

Just have to remember the good times you had with Sebastion, like you've already talked about. You gave him, and he gave you, 12 good years. That's 84 in dog years. ;)

BigSwede - thanks for the tip man! My dog actually has congestive heart failure after beating a serious case of heartworm. The vet couldnt believe he pulled through the treatments at 13 years old! That Co-Q10 might really be beneficial in his twilight years.
I grew up on a dairy farm, so Ive had a lot of dogs - and Mickey is by far the greatest of the great. When my parents moved to the city, he made it a point to go up and down our whole street and beat the **** out of every dog on the block just to show them who was the new dog in town.:) Of course, after that we had to keep the poor guy tied up all the time:(

I am feeling for you bro. Take some time and when you're feeling better maybe adopt another one. Saving another dog's life helps heal the pain of losing one. That's what helped me at least.

My condolences to you and the family, brother.. I'm still not over my dog's passing, either.. :(

Sorry to hear that big Matt, I know what it's like to loose a friend like that.

my condolenses (sp?). dogs become part of the family just like any human would. sometimes i think i have more compassion for animals than i do for people. i had to watch my german shepherd/collie go slowly due to the aging process. supposedly, it's pretty common for them to have hip problems in their later years. by the end, he couldn't even walk anymore. and when i would come home on leave, he would struggle his best to try and get up to meet me. i could see him suffering but he would get up anyway and limp his way over to me and follow me around the best he could. then one morning we left for a few hours, came back and he had crawled out into the woods and died. take care the best you can bro. get another puppy if you can, they help too.

Sorry to hear that Matt, best wishes. I am a dog lover much above being a human lover...

I am so sorry for you loss. I know this may sound a bit harsh, but sometimes people miss their pets when they're gone more than they do other people. A dog is like no other firend you'll ever have - they are always there for you no matter what, and losing one is a very difficult thing... sometimes a dog can teach you how to be a better person, they always bring out the best in you.
I've had to put two doggies to sleep, one was 12 the other was 14; they were both old and very ill and there was nothing I could do to help them anymore.
My most sincere condolences.

you guys don't know how much this has ment to my wife, he was really her dog. They picked each other out on the day we got him. Thank you for all the kind words and stories about your own dogs. It has made this time a little easier.
I think it really did finally hit me today that he is gone.. I came home from my grad class and there was no one here to say hi to me. The wife and kids are gone for a few days and Now 'Bassman is not here either..
Thanks again guys

I am considering not getting another dog because the loss of my last (and only) dog was pretty hard on me. We grew up together and shared alot. Sorry for your loss MattD.
