Jinxie’s Mid-life Reincarnation Workout 🪵

Man I'd be so bummed if my brand new gym toy came already beat up! even at the gym I always pick a very specific barbell I love. back in the day I had bought my ex wife a nice new barbell as well and she took really good care of it, (still does), keeps it oiled and cleaned.

I’m with you. I knew it was a returned item (I got it for $70 off retail), but it was supposed to be “like new.” Here’s a pic of some of the damage.

Yeah on Sundays I cook up a big pot of rice and divy it out into 5 tupperwares. then I cook my eggs and divy those out. stack it up in the fridge and I'm good to go! My buddy and I have been buying these variety packs of Yellowbird hot sauce so that's how I mix it up lol.

argh yeah I'd be frustrated about the bar. thats um, a little more than gently used lol

Yeah, I was mystified that it didn’t at least come wrapped in brown paper. Shipping stickers on the bar?!?! Clearly it was sliding around, metal on metal.

I’m doing a make-up squat sesh tonight, so training shoulders in the morning.

Seated OHP:
Warmups
110x5 (supposed to be 3)
125x4 (supposed to be 3 — can’t count)
140x9 (RPE 8)
Notes: keeping a little in the tank here as I pushed hard the last 2 shoulder workouts. This is my first morning workout in a long while and it feels pretty good.

Viking Press (narrow, neutral grip):
3x8-10

Lateral Shoulder Raises (strict):
3x8

Got the damaged CAP mega hex bar for $70! They offered 25% off of the $140 I paid, but I figured the shipping was expensive for a 75 lbs bar, so I countered at 50 and they indulged me. (I actually meant $50, lol; they took off $70 — bad play on their part.) Very pleased. Indeed, it’s preferable to getting it for twice as much in “like new” condition! This bar is $197 plus tax new. And the cheap black oxide finish was going to come off over time in any event.

Now I need to get used to the 32mm diameter handles. That’s gonna put a substantial dent in my max for at least a few months as I build up grip strength, which is good for me in any event. I can always use the smaller one, which I’m keeping for the wife. Or straps as a last resort, but I hate to rely on them.

Jasmine rice and eggs/whites are so good, but I just burn through it immediately. Good bulking option for me, but I can’t do precooked eggs - they gotta be wet!

Because of you I pulled the trigger on a Cap Olympic EZ bar for $42 on Amazon today. I didn’t realize you could buy one that cheap. Standard sizing/sleeve length, 200lb capacity, and half the price of basically any other brands. People in reviews were complaining about the black paint showing up scratched off or being unrefined - I was just pumped because I can’t find a used POS one anywhere around here for cheaper than that. I want a bent piece of metal that fits my plates on it and won’t hurt my elbows as bad - that’s what I want/expect for $40

Amazon CS is actually always very good anytime I've dealt with them. Assuming because of the volume that most times they'll take the small loss to refund/discount you if there's a real problem.

Also, let me know how you like the hex bar after a couple weeks of use. I'll have space for one in my new gym area, just gotta think about what I want to fill it with!

Right on! I know that bar well; I had the same one (10 of them actually, lol) and also got them for around $40 during the pandemic. It’s solid and totally ample and all of my plates fit on it — sometimes cheap bars are too thick for competitive plates. The screw collars aren’t so great, but that’s easily solved.

But the question remains, is a 200 lbs limit really sufficient, with those guns of yours, hoss?

Lol if I somehow ever manage to break it, I will take that as an accomplishment and celebrate with a high-quality new one!

Yeah silly people were complaining about the clamps, but I am experienced enough to understand what to expect for this value - this price is garage sale good!

you know it's all about perceived value... if something comes in bashed up and you pay full price you feel like you got scammed a bit. but when they give you a massive discount all the sudden you wear those scratches like a badge of honor and now the toy feels more valuable than if it had been perfect!

Well said. I perceive a lightly used 75 lbs beast hex bar with scratched finish for $70 as a tremendous value! So good I won’t even bother refinishing it at this point — like you said, it’s a badge of honor, lol. If paint flakes off in the gym, as it probably will over time, I’ll take the angle grinder to it and render it raw steel.

Okay, enough about my bargains. It’s time to focus on our respective training!

Hex Bar DLs:
150x5
170x5
210x3
225x5
260x5
***295x17 (RPE 8.5; that’s a rep PR and predicts a 462 lb max, which beats this year’s PR by 62 lbs. WTF?!?!)

Note: This comes on the heels of one of my worst DL sessions this year. I did use my new 7mm cheapie knee sleeves and I’m sure that assisted me with the spring at the bottom, but I’ll still take it! They gather a little at the back, but they don’t suck for $20 with tax.

T-bar Rows:
3x8-10

Read an absurd article that said a man’s arms need to be 17+” to be considered muscular (mine are around 15.25”), yet I still succumbed to it such that I’m going to start doing a few sets of biceps-focused work to see if I can get them a little kite girthy.

That’s all. I’m beat from that set of 17 reps! Playing tennis later; should be interesting.
I downloaded Tapatalk just so I could verify your huge ass deadlift session. I wanted to make sure I remembered it correctly so I knew what my target was

Dude, nice job on your DL Pr!

Yes, you’ll eventually get used to whatever gear you buy so long as it’s the right size for you.

@Hyde, I precook my eggs, but they are so “wet” that they are still wet when I nuke them during the week.

It’s a hex bar DL, so you probably can subtract 50 from it. And now that I have 32mm handles with smallish hands, I’m probably gonna take a huge swan dive.

Don’t jinx me Dustin.

Recent studies show that if you watch your wife do yoga directly before deadlifting your T levels skyrocket and most participants will PR in that session.

Thanks brother. Its always humbling to post a session like that one; so it’s nice to get some assurance that it doesn’t mean all has gone to ****, haha.

I do think the fat 32mm handles are substantially impacting my lifts. (I’m use to 28 to 28.5mms.). But I’ve way outstripped my max, so I think things will come together as I get accustomed to it. Or at least I hope so!

CG Bench Press:
Warmups
155x3
175x3
200x9 w/ sleeves (first time using, so felt clumsy; this is a rep PR for this year’s comeback, but I’m sure the sleeves got me an extra rep or 2)
195x9 w/ sleeves (this set felt much better)
185x5 w/ slingshot (just trying it out; took me out of my regular bar path, so felt weird)
205x5 w/ slingshot
215x3 w/ slingshot (still awkward in terms of bar path; need to do a full bench sequence with them)

Note: first time getting sleeves on was a major chore and actually drained me and the wife a little bit; I may need to shave my hairy arms. Look forward to using these and the slingshot more. (I might try to stretch out the sleeves a little.) Special thanks to TGR for gifting these both to me!!!

Also, I tweaked my shoulder on one of the later sets, perhaps bc this is more volume then usual, or maybe bc its the first time with slingshot and I lost my bar groove. Hopefully it’s fleeting. Time for some ice.

Viking Chest Bench:
3x10 (lighter bc of shoulder tweak)

Triceps Rope Extensions:
3x10-12

Helluva session, Jinxie.

Yeah, all new equipment takes some getting used to. Good idea about stretching it out. I hope it helps.

@dapack and I have been watching each others logs for like 12 years now. all the way back to when he was competing as a bodybuilder, to taking state records as a power lifter, and when we were all hanging out on a different forum that doesn't even exist anymore. i can tell you there have been dozens of times that we have had to put the bar down WAY below our expected lift session but came back later to set PR's!

also if your shoulder is bugging you I highly highly highly recommend researching kettlebell armbars. you can do them with a db and you should do it with extremely light weight. even 10-15lbs might be enough. I absolutely swear by them for shoulder health! (and this coming from a guy that used to hate anything kb).

Thanks man. I’ve been posting here since 2008, I think.

My wife has a 20 lbs kettlebell, so I can try the armbar with that. But I think I’m okay now. I think it was only a minor strain from doing a lot more volume than usual this last session. I have had countless shoulder surgeries, and have a pretty good idea when I’m truly injured. I’ll have a better sense after I work shoulders and chest over the next week.

Squats:
Warmups
175x5
195x3
220x10 w/ belt (that’s a PR for this comeback; getting ready for 300 soon)

Notes: legs were sore from tennis on Saturday and frisbee today, but got ‘er dun. Have moved up about 40 lbs in last month. I’ll be pleased to cross back into 300+.

Standing Leg Curls:
3x10

Leg Extensions:
2x8

New split will look like this; spreading out DLs and squats should help my legs recover. This split also will allow me to do weighted chin-ups and dips and more dedicated arm work.

Sunday: squats/other legs
Monday: OHP/other shoulders/arms (weighted dips etc)
Wednesday: DLs and mashing only (short session after work)
Saturday: CG Bench/other chest/other back (weighted chins etc)

**** me man. those traps are bulging. Now I know I got work to do
Haha, they grow when I write a terse letter. I don’t work them separately at all. In fact, I try to avoid implicating them bc they will dwarf and steal from my other muscles.

Thanks my Brother man.

Wow man, it's coming back fast!

Thanks hoss. I’ll trade my abs for some of your hulkish strength for sure, even as impaired by your injury. You and @Hyde are phenomenal — enormous, strong as ****, and with low body fat for your size and strength.

With my new split, I hope to accelerate growth and strength. But I’ll still be a mere mortal compared to you titans!

@Dustin07. Regarding our race to new PRs on DL …

My conventional DL max is 450 lbs (but with straps), back when I was 42-43; so we have similar maxes.

I haven’t done DLs historically; when I was young, I was trained as a wrestler to do power cleans instead, not sure why (maybe injury prevention or even school liability), and never broke out from that pattern until my 40s. At any rate, I’ll be sticking with the hex bar DLs exclusively until I hit 500 lbs, at which point I’ll consider resuming conventional DLs.

The thing is, I have permanent nerve damage at my left elbow (have had 3 surgeries on my left elbow), which impairs my grip strength. And I can’t do heavy over/under grip bc I’ve torn each of my biceps, the left one twice. So the neutral grip of the hex bar suits me best.

As such, I propose that we race to 500 lbs, you on conventional and me on hex bar. Given your recent 300x17, you’re def closer than me — even more so if I’m using my new hex bar with 32mm grips.

At some point, and perhaps soon, I may need to break down and use straps for heavy singles. With that said, I’m going to start working my grip, hopeful to fend off the straps as long as I can.

Fair?

I got no problem with straps! May even be willing to give you an age based handicap like in golf

I wrestled at 148.

Nice! Weight classes have changed since I wrestled. I wrestled 128 lbs as a junior and then I think I moved up to 143 lbs as a senior bc lower was too low body fat according to team physio. I never lived up to potential though bc of my hyper extensive ligaments and tendons. My shoulder tore each of the last two seasons. And then the chickens came home to roost when I was around 38, when things really started falling apart.

But I’ve tried not to let that hold me back. Just had to make some adjustments, like hex bar and using a close grip with elbows in for benching.

The hex bars already is a generous handicap to you. I suspect it equates to around a 10% advantage to me. No need for more for the time being. But thanks, young buck. 🤣

Ahhh idk. Maybe I'll experiment with the hex bar we have and see how different it is. If you are using steel plates I feel like the center of gravity is actually harder than a very wide spread bumper plate setup and more bar bend.

Not positive though, I've never trained with hex before

You don’t get any bar flex. But the neutral grip is a big advantage. And the form is easier. Just keep your chest up and go up and down and it’s all good. Also, you use more quads and less of the erectors. I’m sure it will add around 50 lbs to your DL.

Hook grip is free straps!

I need to work through the discomfort of that. Good suggestion. Im using a thumbless grip on pressing and would prefer a hook grip.

Looking beefy, Jinxie. In a good way.

Crap, there will need to be a handicap for you!!! At least Dustin is amidst a deep cut.

And thanks brother! My physique pops back faster than my strength thanks to muscle memory. I still have a lot of work to do to be permitted into the same ballpark as you, Dustin and the other regulars here! Appreciate the encouragement!

Hex bar is easier, but you can’t hookgrip 32mm handles unless you were probably 6’3” with hands to match. I mean some serious mitts.

I would allow straps for the sake of injury prevention, if anyone cared what I thought as a spectator

Good point. I have hands commensurate with my size, 5’8”.

You’re always welcome to spectate and your word is gospel here!

I just watched a video by Mark Bell demonstrating the Slingshot. Ends up I was wearing at elbows rather than above elbow. No wonder the bar path felt so weird, hard on my shoulder. Foolish not to have first watched a video. Extra excited to use it again this weekend.

On an unrelated note, I had dental implant surgery today and doc said no heavy lifting for 48 hours, so I need to rejigger my split this week.
