Jinxie’s Mid-life Reincarnation Workout 🪵

oh man do I ever love them. they don't show any damage at all after all these years and keep in mind I was a crossfitter for a long time so those knee sleeves got used A LOT, like I mentioned even doing things like burpees and lunges where they would get rubbed across the ground. they have held up tremendously well!

I’m sold. I’m going to wait until I have more of a base built before turning to them. Need to stay honest.

Personally, I’d consider knee sleeves and elbow sleeves before a belt. Knee sleeves help you warm up so much quicker.

Just my take. And yeah, my belt took forever for in-stock blue.

Back to lifting …

Seated OHP:
Warmups
100x5
120x5 (nailed the jcups twice, dammit)
135x11 (RPE 9)
135x7 (RPE 8)
Notes: This legitimizes last week’s 15 lbs gain (185 lbs) to this year’s comeback PR. So this is a rep PR for this year. Still thinking about moving back inside the rack, behind the jcups with the bar before me. Safety spotters at outside of rack are on the border of not being long enough, which is why I keep hitting the jcups.

Strict Lateral Raises:
3x10

That’s all — quick and dirty.

Thanks for the Landmine stand idea. Such a great find at $31!

As a point of reference, this is my last photo from my old log, dated May 2014. I was almost 44 then and weighed just 155 Lbs because I was directed to lift conservatively, lighter. So my upper body is larger and stronger than it’s been since 2014, but I have considerably more fat now at 172 lbs.

Sure thing. Glad to hear it.

I’m frugal and like to find deals!

Make sure to put tape on your bar, where it meets the stand, if you have any concern about the bar getting scratched near the sleeve. As I think I mentioned, I wrapped my wife’s bar with some hockey tape. Works perfectly, including when I use the double D handle for t-bar rows.

I use these. They slide on and off easily. A great tip though, and something I would not have considered before.

Nice. I have those on my safety bars! Work great for sure, though I find the insulation gets a little tattered when I do pin presses off them.

I’ve been thinking about getting Mark Bell’s slingshot, but then I saw this for just $15.99 after spending a lot at Inzer yesterday, so I got it. Hopefully it lasts me through the end of the year and helps me
level up on the bench. Sizing is really weird. I got the XL (34cm arms; 83-99 kgs, considerably more than I weigh) even though my arms are best suited for the XXXL (41 cm arms; over 130 kgs) according to the online chart. Makes me wonder if this is made for people who workout, lol. I don’t how a dude weighing 218 lbs who lifts could have 34 cm (a little over 13”) arms, lol.

The Boron from Swanson Vitamins just arrived, along with some fresh creatine (what I was using was 8 years old, lol). The experiment to reduce SHBG and, in turn, increase bioavailable testosterone begins. (My SHBG is extremely high, which is protective, but it defeats my ambitions!) Like @Hyde, I’ll be taking 12 mgs per day. I’ll get bloods later this year for some objective evidence. Excited.

Also taking 399 mgs of chelated magnesium. See this:

dude you are looking f'ing ripped! definitely bigger arms now than back in '14 but seriously impressed by both years. Keep shredding man! This is the type of **** that gets me motivated. I want to be 50 and running circles around all the spoiled little fatty 20 year olds.

Do you think years of lifting is leading towards still carrying more muscle mass 7 years later? I was talking to my wife last night and as I'm leaning up I feel like this year my arms and pecs are holding a lot more size than even 5 years ago when I was just a tiny bit leaner than I am now.

I truly don't remember "why" I first got knee sleeves. I don't know if my knees were actually hurting or not, but now days I know that all the supportive tissue AROUND my knees (like my quads in particular) feel very tight and sore when I attempt to squat without sleeves and nearly any weight. So I may be a bit dependent on them, but I love them. It's also a mental thing, I have a routine. on those days I have to force myself to go to the gym once I sit down in the locker room with ear phones on and start to slide on my knee sleeves and lace my lifters my mind goes into competition mode and I'm suddenly ready.

You and TGR have persuaded me on the knee sleeves. I have the same issue with always being sore for days after squatting, so hopefully the sleeves will work. I may just start off with some cheapie ones from Amazon so I can get them quickly. But I’ll eventually get higher quality.

I’ll get back to you re your mass question. Need to organize my thoughts.

Thanks guys.

Thanks man. Your turn to post some progress pics, brother.

I think a lot of the current mass is largely a consequence of muscle memory. Indeed, I feel like I look stronger than I currently am, but that will fall into place, at least it always has.

In 2012-2013, I got up to 190 lbs and was a whole lot bigger. I’ve been lifting since I was 12, without any long breaks beyond this recent one. It always seems to come back pretty fast for me in terms of physique, even if I’m lifting lighter with appropriate intensity and volume. For what it’s worth, I really don’t want to get much heavier bc I don’t want to have to buy a new wardrobe, including suits. So I intend to stay reasonably lean.

It’s good to hear that you’ve been able to lean down as you maintain greater size. That’s always the hardest part, I feel. You gotta be disciplined with the diet. Fortunate for me, I’m generally not hungry during the day, so my caloric intake is usually on point, if not in deficit. I actually have to force myself to consume over 100 grams of protein per day, and I never get close to 1.5 grams/lb unless I’m actually making a conscious effort to gain weight by sport eating. I need to work on that.

I’ll also note, the maternal side of my family tends to get leaner with age. Ironically, it’s easier for me to get leaner now than it was when I was in my 20s and 30s. Part of it’s discipline, but a big part is the genes, as well as having a good understanding of how your body responds to different lifting styles and diet.

You seem to have all three qualities, so the board is set for you to succeed such that you can scoff at the 20 somethings as you comfortably enter middle age!

If you get the cheapie sleeves I still highly recommend the thicker 7mm vs the 5mm! you'll end up throwing the 5mm away lol.

I don't have any update to date pics, but this was a few years ago when I was competing regularly. around 172-178lbs I think.

I keep those handy as my motivation whenever I want to lean back up. I'm with you, 190 is my ceiling during a winter bulk, any time I hit it, I pull the reigns hard. right now I'm treating 180 the same way.

Thanks man. I ordered some inexpensive 7mm sleeves already. They have a 1 yr warranty and reviews suggest very good customer service. I think the brand is Nisrock. I looked at the rocktape in 7mm, but the reviews were critical of customer service which is problematic given that the seams are known to tear as they are on most of the cheapies.

Also, I just got emails from Inzer. They don’t have any of the colors I picked in various items, lol, so I have to go with black. They told me they have the black 13mm lever belt in stock, and that the one I ordered was going to take at least 12 weeks to ship, so I went with black there. Wanted some cool color, but better to get the support I need sooner rather than 3-4 months from now. I also upgraded the heavy duty briefs to the power pants bc the briefs were going to take 3 weeks to make. Say wut?!?! They said I’ll have everything by next Friday!!!

Dude, you were quite large and ripped at 175ish lbs in those pics. You look more like 190 lbs. How tall are you — you look 5’10” or so? (I’m only 5’8”.). You’ve got that Ancient Greek upper body with great pecs. Envious — I’m all shoulders and triceps.

I look forward to seeing some updates. I suspect your body fat is as low as mine, at least before your guys trip, lol. Have a blast!

Thanks so much for all your guidance! Greatly appreciated.

Hey man, you want my slingshot and these EliteFts elbow sleeves? The sleeves are no joke, I think my bench bounced when I wore them, and I legit only wore them once or twice. My arms are disproportionately larger than anything else and I struggle to get them on.

The slingshot I think I wore 3-5 times. I just don’t mess with them. They are garagegym dusty, but practically new. I can hand wash them and mail them to you if you are interested. No cost. If you don’t like them, you can gift them to someone else.

You’re the man. My arms are around 15 inches or so, so I would imagine the sleeve will fit me.

I’m sure I can find something to barter with you. I have lots of electronics, smart devices, many new. And please, let me pay for the postage. I can return the cheapie slingshot since it’s from Amazon.

The will both fit you.

I love some electronics and technology but don’t have any needs right now. Postage would be pennies. DM me your addy, and I’ll send them out. Maybe you’ll have something down the road you don’t need.

Yesterday’s hike: 5 miles, steep grade, moderate pace (18 min miles).

Just logging these to figure out their impact on my squats.

^that’s how we do it here on AM. Way to pay it forward, JR

Indeed! This is a really great group of regulars here. So supportive and helpful, and smart to boot. Really happy I chose to resume logging here!

Sometimes it’s hard to keep momentum when you train at home and don’t really have friends that train like folks here. So this is imminently helpful. Really appreciate you guys.

I hope to pay it back — and forward.

Seems too good to be true, but Wednesday’s order from Inzer, below, is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday! I did change some colors, including the belt to black, to avoid waiting 12+ weeks, but it’s a fair trade off. Customer service has been excellent. They made it easy. Also up graded from the HD briefs to squat pants, because would take 3-4 weeks or cost $9 more to ship separately, and squat pants were just that much more expensive and ready to ship.

Also got my cheapie 7mm knee sleeves in a day from Amazon. Will try them out today. Look fairly well made for around $20 for the pair. I’ll report back if they don’t suck.

Hex Bar DLs:
150x5
170x5
210x3
225x5
260x5
***295x17 (RPE 8.5; that’s a rep PR and predicts a 462 lb max, which beats this year’s PR by 62 lbs. WTF?!?!)

Note: This comes on the heels of one of my worst DL sessions this year. I did use my new 7mm cheapie knee sleeves and I’m sure that assisted me with the spring at the bottom, but I’ll still take it! They gather a little at the back, but they don’t suck for $20 with tax.

T-bar Rows:
3x8-10

Read an absurd article that said a man’s arms need to be 17+” to be considered muscular (mine are around 15.25”), yet I still succumbed to it such that I’m going to start doing a few sets of biceps-focused work to see if I can get them a little kite girthy.

Invalid Link Removed

Cheater Curls:
2x10

Hammer Curls:
2x10

That’s all. I’m beat from that set of 17 reps! Playing tennis later; should be interesting.

Congrats on the PR! Rep PRs don’t always translate to true single maxes, but they are definitely an indication of progress and a huge confidence booster. I only say this to say, don’t be discouraged if your a few pounds shy of your max if you make an attempt.

Without reading it - what a stupid article. Obviously, it does not factor in height, arm length, goals, and training focus.

On a side note, having stronger arms can assist in other lifts, of course. Mountaindog1 has a lot of arm stuff on YouTube that is great.

Thanks bud. No doubt there’s not a full translation, particularly on DLs. But my last good DL session for reps was 300x10. I could have done that the 17 times today.

Interestingly, I usually can bench a little more than what’s projected based on reps. But that’s a function of losing my set up during reps I think. Anyway, I’m sure I can’t hit even 450 lbs as I haven’t handled more than 365 lbs for a single lately. Haven’t tried to max bc it usually derails me for weeks. But one of these days.

In any case, excited, particularly bc my wife hit 170x17 (correction: x15) today. That was part of my motivation. I just started training her on a barbell 2 months ago. She’s a natural unlike me.

You will also potentiate your true 1RM by training heavier. As the training cycles go on, reps will likely fall on AMRAPS and you will inherently start lifting “heavier”. Working at 6-8 rep AMRAPS eventually will get you much more prepared to pull a 1RM when the time comes than the higher volume sets you are seeing now.

Back looks legit

Thanks man. % agree.

I’ll be leaving a little more in the tank on 5s day most of the time, which will allow me to incorporate more heavy singles on 1s day. And for hex bar DLs, I’ll have a lot more latitude to go heavier with my new bar that arrives on Wednesday. As things stand, I can only reach 420 lbs and that’s without collars.

Appreciate the guidance from you strong guys!

On an unrelated note, when I click on attachments, including on other logs, I get an error message and can’t open the pics. I can only see the pics that are embedded. Is there a solution short of using Imgur or the like? Thanks in advance.

Close-grip Bench:
Warmups
5x145
5x165
***11x185
6x195
Notes: still lagging, but this is a rep PR for this year, projecting 253 lbs; CG bench has been stuck below 250 lbs, so I’ll take it!

Close-grip Incline Bench:
5x185
8x155
8x135
Notes: First time in a long while, so the 185 lbs was probably overly zealous; my CG incline is usually pretty close to my CG flat.

Tricep Extensions
3x10

DUDE that deadlift PR 😂😂 295 x 17 is wild! IDK about you but anytime I pull a heavy DL over say 225 ish for more than 10 reps I seriously feel like I can feel the t just coursing through my body. We used to do a wod called Diane which was 21/15/9 of deadlifts and handstand pushups. I could careless about the handstand pushups these days but 21 rep sets of DL at 225 will put some hair on your chest! speaking of hair, I see you grow as much of a manvest as I do. Our people were made for the harsh winters LOL

HUGE back too, great V taper! It's funny, I'm with you on the arms. I think my biggest I ever measured them at was around 16.25 or 16.5. they WILL respond with a lot of work and will grow, but man it takes a LOT to get them bigger and to hold them there. I'm not sure what they measure out at right now but since I'm not competing anymore and nobody sees me in bodybuilder type trunks, I figure the guns and pecks are the most fun/important vanity features lol.

to your other comment... left for the fishing trip at 176.2lbs, checked in at home last night at 181.2 lbs lol. but it's almost all water/beer weight. this morning I was already back down to 178.2lbs. I probably only had a couple of beers but I admit I did pound the trulys/whiteclaws on the boat (it was perfect weather, 100f, trolling around for walleye), and then bourbon at night with my brother and cards at the picnic table.

Thanks man re the DLs. Recall, I’m still just hex bar DLing, but I’m still pleased with the progress. (It’s an undertrained movement for me. All-time PR for conventional DL is just 450 Lbs.). I agree, those super high rep sets make you feel alive. Fortunately, I mostly was feeling sore in my upper back, which marks an improvement in form.

I get my new 75 lbs hex bar with 13” sleeves today, so I’ll no longer be out of sleeve room!

Haha, the hair vest, to protect us from harsh environs. One of the benefits of getting older is the body hair starts to thin and lighten. I take propecia too, which seems to help, though I know it’s not ideal for muscular hardness.

Thanks re the back. Alas, I’m starting to bust out of my extra athletic cut suits that I bought when I was weighing 10 lbs less. With that said, I haven’t been able to add any weight the last few months, even with the addition of creatine (and beer!). I’m trying to force myself to eat more, mostly to assist recovery. Struggled to eat a 700 calorie breakfast just now, and feel like I need to hibernate now. I used to fast until lunchtime, so this will take some getting used to.

Re arms, I just started incorporating a few sets of specialized biceps work since I haven’t been doing much in the way of pull-ups and chin-ups. Hoping to get them back to 16+”. Vanity persists in middle age, lol.

Sounds like you had a great trip. Did you say bourbon?!?! That’s my booze of choice too!

Regarding a 700 cal breakfast, here’s my 650-700 cal recent one on any days I don’t train first thing (ie 5/7 days):

4x - Jimmy Dean frozen Turkey Sausage patties (microwave in 90 seconds) (260 cal)
1x - Powercrunch Pro (300-350 cal based on flavor)
1x - Custom Collagens 10g beef collagen peptides
1x - 1tbsp heavy whipping cream

Throw the collagen in your hot coffee, add cream, heat the sausages and then enjoy the protein (candy) bar after you munch down the sausages. This is something like $4, incredibly convenient & easy to eat regardless of hunger, savory, sweet, and starts the day with a frontload of fats & sodium for stable energy while I work and to help rehydrate from the night (along with my water). 46g protein from turkey & whey, not counting the 10g of incomplete from the collagen for joint repair, and only 17 carbs with lots of fat for a stable energy base.

The rest of my meals are way lower fat and higher carb.

The trick is to find things you enjoy eating and move stuff around to address satiety, compliance, macro & calorie goals. For instance, I can swing this breakfast down 50 cals by choosing a different flavor of powercrunch pro. I can drop another 50 by ditching the heavy cream, or add 50 with another cup of coffee with more. Add/drop a sausage, etc. I could make it high carb low fat by dropping cream or switching to skim milk, & switching the bar to a cup of egg whites and a bagel, or oats with a scoop of protein powder & fruit added. Add jam or honey for more cals, etc. If hungry use full rolled oats and whole fibrous fruit, if not quick oats with dried fruit added like raisins.

Hope that gives some ideas to make it easier!

Well put and clever. That is very helpful, thanks.

I’ll check out the Jimmy Dean — I think Costco has it. I’ll also look into the beef collagen, now that someone credible has recommended it to me.

Now I just need to get more hungry during the day!

I used to fast until lunch and had the same weight gaining problem. I eventually just started eating and eating, and it caught up to me. lol

Same here. I consume at least 60% of my calories at night, which I know is terrible. I guess I just gotta fake it until I make it.

On an unrelated note, I just got my Inzer gear. It was a workout getting on and off the UD erector shirt and the squat pants, and even getting the belt off the first time, lol. For the shirt and pants, particularly the former, it seems like a two person job. I may have bitten off more than I can chew here. Hate to spend $10 to send back $90 worth of stuff, but this seems rather austere for someone that has no plans of competing and just wants to save their back. Tight is fine, but this **** is uber tight and it makes me itch, lol. Do you ever get used to this? Seriously, I became a little worried when the shirt got caught around my head, taking it off, lol. Help, lol!

Lol, figured out the pants — I was putting them on with the label in the back (seems reasonable), which was backwards. They’re still tight, but it’s manageable and I can see how they will be helpful. And I’m sure they will stretch a little. And I was able to get the shirt and on and off without too much trouble with my wife’s help.

Haven’t used the belt still, but boy is it a nice fit. Was worth the price of having to assemble it for sure.

We had to skip squat day on Monday, but will be making it up tonight. I’ll definitely be trying out the belt as well as my new cheapie knee sleeves.

Also got my “like new” CAP mega hex bar from Amazon. The thing is a 75lbs beast with 32mm handles (on the thick side for my smallish hands). Problem is, Amazon shipped the damn thing without any protection, just the bar with shipping stickers on it, lol. The black finish got scarred badly all over the place, though the structural integrity seems fine. It’s far from “like new.” I’m hoping to get a $50 discount on it bc of the damage. If not, may just send it back. If I keep it, I’ll probably strip the paint and take a wire wheel to it, so it’s just raw steel. It should be fine indoors, where I’ll be using it exclusively.

I just do jasmine rice and eggs every morning 😂
I'm super easy though, been doing it for years lololol. when I need to tweak macros I just increase or decrease the rice or the eggs or add egg whites for free protein lol.

Man I'd be so bummed if my brand new gym toy came already beat up! even at the gym I always pick a very specific barbell I love. back in the day I had bought my ex wife a nice new barbell as well and she took really good care of it, (still does), keeps it oiled and cleaned.

That’s a great idea. I used to do eggs and rice or potatoes for bfast when I was doing paleo. I’m currently doing oatmeal with bananas and egg whites (using instapot) and a protein shake. I need to mix it up though to stay interested.
