In need of new Devotional

I'm currently reading Grace for the Moment by Max Lucado. I really like it, but it is really short, and I feel that i'm not getting enough Bible out of it. Any suggestions???

I have a devotional called SOLO its in the same context as the message. So it is really only good to read alongside my KJV. Decent, with a some good lessons and devotionals, but not the deepest one out there IMO.

This is an awesome internet resource from an outstanding expository preacher (and the president of my alma mater.) You can purchase the books or just read the daily devotionals from the web page. if you want bible, there is a tab for daily scripture reading that will get you through the entire bible in one year. I like watching online sermons as my type of devotional

I believe your answer is in your response.. If you are not getting enough Bible out of a devotion, then its time my friend to get in to the Bible.
Personally I love reading the KJV and have since 2nd grade, but I do like to read the NASB version as well. The footnotes and cross references really allow one to get a big picture of the beginning, and end, and the Hope we all have in Christ.

I appreciate the input! I am reading the bible though, I was just hoping for one that would get deeper into the scripture. The Devo i have now only has one verse, then explains. I was hoping for something with at least a paragraph or perhaps a chapter. I enjoy NKJV and the NLT. From time to time i hit up The Message.

Try picking up something that is a study on a specific book. Check out John MacArthur's study guides.

Yeah man, that's what Supersize was telling me about as well. I think i'm going up to the book store right now to see if they have some that i can fiddle with in person.

Does anyone know how to unsubscribe a thread? I'm already subbed, but when I go to "thread tools" it give me an option to "subscribe" but not to "unsubscribe". :dunno:

Easy.. Do the following:

1. Click on User CP link at the top of the AM forum menu bar.
2. Look for Subscribed Threads in your User Control Panel which is running verticall (top to bottom) along the left side of your User CP screen.
3. Click on the link that reads List Subscriptions.
4. Click on the checkbox next to the name of your subscribed thread, in this case "In need of new Devotional"
5. Next click on the pulldown menu which is below the list of subscribed threads, and select the option Delete Subscription.
6. CLick on the Go button right nextr to the "Delete Subscription" option you just selectd, and BAM! All done :)

Just got back from the Book Store and man did I stock up!

Here's what I bought:
When I Don't Desire God (How to Fight for Joy) by John Piper
A Grief Observed, also The Problem of Pain, BY C.S. Lewis (I'm already reading Mere Christianity and I like it)

Finally....I bout a book titled Be Mature, Growing up in Christ. Written by Warren W. Wiersbe. This book covers the book of James which is not only my favorite book in the Bible, but it puts me in my place every time I even think about it.

I also picked up a Parallel Bible with KJV, NKJV, NIV, and NLT. I think this will definitely help in my studies. I already have about 7 or 8 different translations, but they are in 10 or 12 different bibles!

If anyone wants to partner up for reading the books or the James Bible Study let me know!

The Problem of Pain is AMAZING! And A Grief Observed looks excellent, although I haven't read it yet.

I'd love to get up with you for the study on James. We'll have to pick a night that we can both get together once a week.

Absolutely my friend! I just did the first chapter out of twelve. It gives a really well laid out background about who James really was and who he was writing it for and the 5 keys to Spiritual Maturity. I picked it up at the Gospel Lighthouse on Beal Pkwy here in town. It really gets into the word and brings in references from the entire Bible which is awesome, so you know the guy who wrote it did his homework! Great to hear that you are in on this!

John Piper's 90 minutes in Heaven was unbelievable. I read almost a fourth of it leaning against the shelf in Books A Million one night. My wife said, we can buy that and take it home if you want. I also like kenneth Copeland. I like his teaching style and his preaching. His attitude is always if it's in the Bible and God said it, then it applies to him today, no matter what the situation. When I started growing in my faith, he was one of the first I listened to and helped build my "child-like faith" in the Lord. I particularly like his series called "laws of prosperity".

Quite funny you mentioned it! I actually bought 90 minutes in Heaven, last night as well as 23 minutes in Hell. I will have to check out some of that Kenneth Copeland work as well, Thanks for the rec!

The 23 minutes in hell didn't do the same thing for me as the Piper book. It was weird in a way. John Piper describes what happened to him in detail, and gives scriptural references to back up what he describes Heaven is like. In 23 minutes in Hell, I had a hard time really believing this guy actually went through that stuff. Not saying he didn't, but the style he used to write it didn't seem to me like a genuine experience. He tells his story using scripture references, vs. actually backing up what he saw with them. Maybe I was just trying to compare the two books, but since the writing style was different, I felt a little disappointed that 23 minutes in Hell didn't really capture me like Piper's story.

BTW, you can go to Invalid Link Removed for Copeland's website. You can check out his daily TV show, podcasts, conference videos and audios and such. I get his free monthly magazine, The Believer's Voice of Victory, and the first thing I read is the Good News Gazette in the middle. Awesome testimony stories every month. I know some wealthy business men that have had Copeland come in and speak with their top business leaders and mentors, and were blown away with his spiritual leadership and training.
