I think I might be lactose intolerant.

I have GERD and diary makes my reflux worse, milk more so than cheese and yogurt. It doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen; especially with milk. I was thinking since I pretty much can't eliminate dairy completely(college student budget), maybe I can take lactase pills. The issue is, they're expensive if I have to take them every time I have dairy and they'll run out quick. I do have a pill cutter though and depending on how much lactase I need(I have no idea btw), I cut cut the pills in half and conserve that way. Any suggestions? Oh, and I have noticed increased inflammation since I'm been eating more dairy lately. My fingers and hands keep feeling sore.

hi,

obviously the best advice would be to cut the dairy out to make sure the hands and finger pain is associated with the lactose issue. Yes that can happen to lactose individuals.

if you are taking the milk for protein go to soy or coconut and then possible gluten free diet.

here is a link and scroll to the bottom for some ideas to help come off dairy if you cant do the pills. These are just some ideas and hope 1 of them or the advice above is helpful.

Yeah, I can easily give up milk. I actually prefer almond milk, but I LOVE cheese.

wife loves the mozz cheese but an hour later, she pays for it all night long

You should definitely give lactase pills a try. You don't have to buy lactaid if you're concerned about cost. There are plenty of non-brand name versions out there. I use Daily Essential Enzymes by Source Naturals which includes several different types of digestive enzymes and it has been life changing for me, but I also use it before eating anything.

If you kill a cow with your bare hands than you get the power to drink milk. At least that's what I heard.

I think the OP is trying to find the amount of lactase to use. Shiznown, maybe Google the info. I read a few articles and forum posts before where they add one lactase pill in a gallon of milk. That will be easier than splitting pills. I know the lactase pill is super expensive and I tried them before. Honestly lactose free milk is so cheap now I'd buy those before going the pill route. Costco sells 1.5 gallon for 6-7$ and they're split into 3 cartons.

I tried lactaid milk since I don't feel so good from dairy either but it made me break out....but it's cheap so maybe you can try it? I prefer almond, hemp or coconut milk anyway and it's inexpensive at trader joes....as for cheese, there's always goat's cheese and sheep's milk cheese? It's not something you have everyday but just if you really are craving it.....

Saw a gastro yesterday and he told me to give a dairy free diet a try. He told me, if dairy is indeed the issue(causewaying my GERD), I can ween off the pills.

I do not understand the amount of lactase needed. All I know is that it is measured in FCC and the digestive enzyme brand mentioned above contains 40 FCC. Lactaid pills contain 900 FCC units but that is enough to cover an entire gallon of milk. The digestive enyzmes mentioned above are the most affordable, especially if I use 5 pills a day, one for each meal. I have read some reviews on them that the dosage is too low however. If that is the case, it makes digestive enzymes unrealistically expensive. I eat 5 times a day, so a pill bottle of 90 is not going to last long at all.
