Hyde’s Strength Odyssey

Good to hear on getting things fixed up, and yeah your front delts were getting pretty ridiculous there for a bit. That picture that is on the front of your thread on the app they look sick!!!

That’s actually still not training them the way I used to be able to, ROM-wise. They were always a strong point but I feel they have kind of withered.

Also, took my BP this morning & it is down to 122/78 with a pulse of 81. Still on 40mg Telmisartan nightly, so I will be keeping that in until I can get things down a bit further to accommodate a rebound. Hoping if I lose another 5lbs I’ll be able to drop it for now.

You probably already know this but I found doing a dead hang from a chin up bar is the best thing for Ab Cramps !!

Interesting, I have always just arched my back and forced them to elongate despite the cramp to get them to stop. I may have to try a dead hang next time and see which is more effective for me.

I did not know this; I instinctively did straighten up so I couldn’t get trapped in a bent over position but I didn’t realize slow hyperextension would further benefit me. It’s certainly worth a try next time!

Yeah I can normally stop an ab cramp within 10-30 seconds doing that. Then again for all I know it is stopping on its own but autoinhibition from stretching while contracted/cramped is what I always thought was stopping them.

I certainly am not hoping either one of you get an ab cramp but I am anxious to hear your thoughts next time you do. Do you ever get a cramp in only one beer in the six pack? I looks pretty weird!

Moved session forward a day since we’re getting everything ready to head to Nationals Wednesday for the wife to weighin Thursday. Only had 75 minutes until the gym closed, so I wanted to try a few high rep sets out for some more GPP & bit of deload after this last block. First time under a barbell since the meet 4 weeks ago - the 50 rep set of bench got tough at the very end!

Hope your wife has a good and successful meet. That would be pretty cool after you’ve won your meet if she’s able to come in about 5 weeks later and take first in the Nationals. Man, talk about a family of champions.💪🏆

50X95 = 4,750 lbs it should be tough !! Nice Work!!

Thanks for the kind words! I’m sure it will stacked in this middleweight lineup so I have no idea how it will go, but for her part she is the strongest she’s been since my son was born. In some things, stronger now than ever! Also woke up at weight today, so she won’t have any cutting to do.

Haha it was a fun challenge - all of a sudden at rep 42 it went from easy to “I’m not going to make it!”

If I slack on ab training for a couple weeks then take crunches or leg raises near failure I always get that single ab cramp. It's so strange and uncomfortable. It never happens when I'm consistent with training.

Quick story about muscle cramps. Back in HS my wrestling coach fixed a muscle cramp by punching it. It worked. I'll never forget my quad cramped up during a match. I hopped over to the side and he hit my leg HARD. Instant relief. I'm not so sure you'd want to get punched in the gut that hard though. I get ab cramp relief by inhaling into my stomach and stretching (chest up) for 20+ seconds. It's a strange feeling to stretch when that single ab is all tensed up but so far it's worked!

Great trick I’ll have to try! Yeah I hadn’t done Stir the Pot in ages, and my abs were already shot from the bracing & step up work I’d done, so that makes sense - they haven’t been trained like that in a while.

As for the punching, I can believe it. Maybe it makes the muscle fire reflexively or something? Who knows.

"power lifter found dead under 95lb bar" 😅😅😅😅😅

I've repped out plenty with 135 or 155 etc but never tried for 50 at 95 😅 did not need this challenge in my head LOL!

Oh yeah, definitely have had only one, or just a few of them.

Oh yeah, I have ALWAYS hit my cramps to get them to stop. It is just automatic, I never had to think about it, just something I have always done. I do even hit my abs when cramping too, I think it is the combo of hitting them and the forced stretch creating some autoinhibition.

My thought was golgi tendon reflex, that maybe striking it makes the contracted muscle think the contraction is about to cause damage so it lets go out of self preservation. However that may just be correlation not causation. My wife freaks out sometimes because my neck/jaw muscle will cramp sometimes due to left over issues from an old bout with Bell's Palsy. I will hit myself in the neck right under my ear where it cramps up very hard if pressing my thumb into it does not stop and. She just looks at me like why are you trying to knock yourself out over there? Now she knows and just lets it go because she knows I am in a lot of pain and fighting through it.

If you get up late exhausted & end up rather short on time, make your lifts count! First time pulling or squatting in a month. Definitely did not get close to a proper max effort triple, but it was quality, dense work: 455, 475, & 505 were all pulled inside a single 3-minute window before moving on. Squats felt extremely rusty, but by 285 I was in the groove. Earned some great leg work with the hi bar position.

I bet you are loving being back under the bar!

A workout that would kill most any of us mere mortals' !!

I see your starting to ramp your weights back up……Time to unleash the Beast.

I took my 4 weeks of decompression for my spine & mind, and it was a pleasant to go to the gym without the anxiety of a hard heavy effort looming over me…BUT, I also know that if I want to do more than I’ve ever done, that is not going to be a short path. I know I can make it higher up the mountain, but you can’t sit around resting longer than you need - it’s a long way to the top if you want to rock & roll!

I will meet with the surgeon next Wednesday about my elbow, and should find out if surgery is coming and what that recovery will look like.

Woke up really feeling the squats in my thighs! While being sore sucks, I am happy it’s not in my back/hips.

Leaving at 4am tomorrow/tonight. Going to get some training in right after work, then hopefully I will be able to decompress enough to get some shut eye before the early road-trip.

I think I’m going to switch my shot from 150 test / 100 mast to 120/120 this week and see if I notice any change in acne. I have been getting more than expected for a cruise and I think my estrogen is a bit high. I have also been doing only one shot a week, but I’d prefer to keep it that way if I can get a weekly dosage dialed that manages estrogen acceptably without an AI or pushing estrogen too low (going off subjectives that matter to me like joint comfort, acne, sexual function).

Been taking 300mg L-Carnitine about 5-6 days per week, but I won’t be bringing it on the trip.

Good Luck at the meet !! Tell your wife to kick some butt!!

Check out Revitale salicylic acid scrub soap. Its sold on Amazon for $7 and works well on my acne. It lasts a while unlike many other fancy soaps. I notice red bumps start fading after a couple days. The salicylic acid pads work for me too. I hit any areas 1x AM and 1x PM. That's kept my skin clear and even knocked out some cystic acne too. Quick and cheap.

@Hyde, I went for it, lol. first 30 reps were flying. by 42 I started questioning life lol 😅😅😅
Yeah it’s crazy how the light weight high reps does. You start out and it feels like nothing, and then it’s like you hit a wall and just can’t keep going. You should try @Rocket3015 100 rep squat challenge. Sounds fairly easy doing 100 squats with just the bar, then when you get to about 75 you start thinking what have I got myself into….very humbling.

LOL I think we used to do a 60 second airsquat for time thing in xfit. at peak fitness you could break 70+ in a minute but when it's done you're taking a knife to your socks, shoes and kneesleeves just so your legs can breathe 😅😅😅

First time back to benching in 4 weeks. At 12+lbs lighter bodyweight, on 1cc gear/wk and on a low narrow fixed jcup commercial bench, to still be hitting 315 & 325x3 I bet I’m good for at least 360 still right now, which is very cool. This was late at 8pm after working, packing, gymnastics, packing all day too, and despite being very tired it was so fulfilling!

Got a 2 hour nap last night, up at 3am and successfully drove the family out to Erie, PA. Weighins for the wife are 9:30am ET tomorrow and she’s been holding her bodyweight around 163 with diet so not cut needed; she’s woken up at weight the last 2 days now (just under the 160.8lb cutoff). Hotel right on the lake and it’s quite pretty here. Some beautiful foliage in Ohio and Pennsylvania right now on the drive!

I did that a few weeks ago. I racked the bar at 108 reps. Damn near collapsed in the squat rack
