Beginning to hope I actually tore off some kind of scar tissue/adhesion during that deadlift and not part of my actual bicep. There’s been no bruising, barely sore, and I’m basically fully functional. I was moving the 45 plates and dbs around tonight just fine. There is a remarkable increase in range of motion now with my left elbow - did less than a thumb length from the smooth tonight no problem. Probably been ~18 months since I could do that without nerve/pain issues. I was also able to lower the dbs below my chin, all the way down, on OHP, and my fingers were touching the smooth on JM Press. This is extremely exciting; I’ll be testing barbell incline & overhead ROM next week!

Also, the closegrip 350 went up so smoothly it was almost casual, even with a solid pause. Wife & I decided to play it safe and quit while I was ahead.

That’s some really good Close Grip Bench numbers, especially with what you’ve been going through. Actually makes a lot of sense that it could be scar tissue that actually could be the problem, considering you’ve dealt with an old injury before. The increased range of motion, so soon, is good evidence that it probably isn’t a tear.👍

Very excited for you that you might not be dealing with another injury!!!!!

Yeah I know it’s probably overly hopeful, but we’ll see what the ortho says this Thursday. If nothing else, praise God I am in no pain and have normal function for day to day!

Currently at a big strongman competition. Last night there was a seminar with Brian Shaw, and this morning they had the Clash of the Masters Pro Invitational. A guy we’ve trained with some out of the Chicago area, Tim Filus, who has trained with my wife’s current coach for years now, just took 1st place over the likes of Travis Ortmayer in 2nd and Nick Best in 3rd. Those 2 guys have like 20 WSM appearances between them, so this was a huge victory for Tim. Especially losing his father earlier this year, I know this will mean a lot to him. This comp was just livestreamed one of the ESPNs I believe.

Now there’s a big amateur contest beginning and my wife is judging that, and I’m back at the hotel while little man gets his nap in.

Damn, PR’s, son airlifted, bicep tear scare, more PR’s (wtf), glad it is stabilizing man. Hopefully no serious damage. You going to the Shaw classic aug 13-14 by chance?

No, we’ll live-stream it for $10 or whatever it is; we did that last year and watched it afterwards all at once without the breaks in between and it was awesome. If you are in Colorado though I would definitely go; world’s finest out there going hard as you will ever see anywhere! Multiple 1,000lb deadlifters & many 400+ lb overhead pressers.

Did get a pic with my son & Brian Shaw today though! He enjoyed it.

Forgot the commercial gym closed at 9pm on Sunday, so I didn’t a full training session done. Still, glad to get some conditioning & speed training in after the trip. Tried out incline: ROM has definitely increased, but still not sure it’s enough for me to want to start loading that movement.

I did end up basically teaching a guy to squat in the last 10 minutes before they closed. I didn’t have time to do the muscle work I wanted anyway, and it honestly made an insane difference for him, so we were both very happy he asked for the instruction. Went from a half-squatter with back pain to pain-free while hitting parallel with just a handful of tweaks & cues. Can’t believe how fast he learned!

Hope the biceps is still pain free. Sounds like the squat tutorial you gave was just as gratifying for you as it was good for him. Always nice when you can make a difference in someone's life / training in as little as 10 minutes.

Sweat my ass off in the garage for this one! 475 felt alright until I got down to the bottom on the sandbag - it basically just collapsed me to the safety pins. 12” “box” with a close deadlift stance feels insanely deep, btw

Added 20mg/day of the dirty Var back in today, on top of the gram of oil weekly (300/300/250/150 of test/mast/deca/dhb). 7 weeks out.

Keeping those PRs coming is always a good sign. Man and I would say a 12” box squat feels insanely deep, because it is deep. 🔥

What a morning! After helping Momma get my son cleaned up, I came back out to hit 325 & it was hard AF - except I didn’t bench 325; I hadn’t changed weights before going inside like I thought and had actually retook 305 again. It was harder than the first time by far. So I made a small jump to 320, got psyched up as hard as I could without ammonia, and fucking obliterated 320. No time for a liftoff from my wife, so I left the max effort there to get her car ready to go to daycare. Finished with some 80% back-off work.

Multitasking at it’s finest. Definitely not any fun to stop in the middle of sets and resume after a longer rest, especially going heavy. Hope your little buddy is feeling better.

Thank you! Other than the random liquids from either end scenario that keeps popping up when we think it’s all over, he’s doing really great. He missed gymnastics last week obviously, but last night he had one of the best sessions he’s had in 2 months probably. Had a blast the entire time and made some great progress on things like balance & climbing ability since last time. He’s also starting to jump some on the trampoline, not just legpress and bounce.

Awesome 😇

I know you love watching him make progress on that stuff. Probably not much of a better activity for him than gymnastics to learn how to control his body, and build a huge base of strength and coordination.

My forearms and grip were actually fried from maxing the Swissbar!
Interesting, I wouldn't have expected that.

Met with the ortho today who re-attached my bicep; such a terrific doctor! Got x-rays. Wish I had taken pictures for you guys.

I have significant heterotopic bone formation (bone formation where there shouldn’t be any) around where my distal bicep tendon was anchored for my repair at the radial styloid, as well as some in the crook of my elbow (the anterior joint capsule). Compared to my x-rays of 3 years ago, there was zero ossification present back then of any kind.

He believes the reason I have limited mobility now is due to this progressive heterotopic bone growth jamming me up, and it will require surgery to excise it. He can’t do it, but he is referring me to his mentor up in Chicago - he said this man taught him everything he knows about the elbow and bicep, so there really can’t be higher praise given.

Regarding the top of my bicep, he examined my arm and genuinely believes I did not tear it. It looks correct & is functioning normally, and before I could even share my suspicion he announced it’s very likely I did indeed tear away scar tissue! That was so great to hear. I did not want to be overly optimistic but I’m glad that was his conclusion as well.

I will need a fairly fresh CT scan before I visit the doctor up north for evaluation, and I intend to compete still September 11th, so I will get a scan after that and hopefully set a surgery date for some time after my wife goes to Nationals mid October. I will definitely want some time anyway to drop some weight post comp & let my blood thin out before I go under the knife.

Great to hear! So are you still going to use the mixed grip or do you plan to start training your hook grip for maximal weights again? If you are able to pull off mixed I bet you crush dead lifts this time around! Couldn't remember if this was on your under hand side or not.

This is on my underhand side, my repaired (and dominant underhand grip) left arm.

I am going to do some light testing tonight. If I can go underhand, I will - this ultimately is key to putting up the total I’m capable of.

Guessing you will get that bone filed down early next year or after this meet?

Goal is definitely this year, any time after Strongman Corp Nationals mid October. Wife is going to compete as a middleweight. Not trying to go on vacation only being able to carry bags with one hand

Glad they were able to figure it out and come up with a plan of action. Really good that it doesn’t look like a tear and seems to be as you suspected, scar tissue. It does make sense that the limited mobility is caused from the calcification or excess bone growth. Probably when you were injured before, you must of had some damage to the bone then, whether hairline fracture or spurs, and that caused the buildup. You’ll feel like a new man when they get it straightened out. And hey you’re already getting PRs, imagine how good training will be after everything heals.

That certainly could make a lot of sense - the joint capsule buildup area is likely where the tendon originally attracted, and then recovering from the re-attachment my body began building deposits where the anchors were put in at the top of my forearm.

I am pretty excited at the prospect of eventually being able to train some overhead pressing again! And some curling. And my arm just not hurting trying to cram under a straight bar inside the jcups.

Yeah I really think you’re going to make tremendous strides in your training, after surgery, considering what you’ve already accomplished while being injured.

Top set of frontsquat took all of my resolve, but I managed to put 10lbs on my max triple from a month ago, so that was a big victory. Bicep seemed happy testing out some light pulls! Beat the crap out of my hamstrings; it was tough just walking to the car after this one. My hip flexors feel really weak trying to lift my legs in the supported leg raises, so I need to keep hammering those.

I bet your legs were toast after Front Squats, Speed Deadlifts, followed by GHR with Good Girls……Had to do the Zombie walk.
Good to hear no bicep issues with the light pulls.

I’m doing the zombie walk today! Has to go down to the basement earlier - stairs were fun. Took me over a minute to get down them.

Those grip shirts really help that much?

My shirt was totally soaked by 275, and I nearly dumped 325 it was rolling around so hard on me. I don’t believe I would have made 355 without it.

There’s a reason they’re used in virtually every strongman contest, and typically not allowed in powerlifting.

No matter how sweaty the fabric gets, the little rubber bumps give some surface/bite to the implement/barbell. You can make your own with some rubberized adhesive from the hardware store and a $5 heavy cotton tee. You just smear it on over the clavicle, delt, chest, and center abs and let it cure, then do the upper back/traps/shoulders on the back side. It will look like trash but works well. Chad used to do that he said before they became a popular premade item.

355 front squats....thats massochism.

Dude I’m smashed today. Fronts are always a high payout/high cost lift for me.

Very cool. I’ve always been intrigued by them but never used. I hear they work pretty decent for bench too. Might need to get on that for training solo.

If you are slipping, and a band on your bench isn’t cutting it, they are a stronger option.

Not a lot of time this morning, but I made sure to train my abs, get a heavy effort pull in, and did some hypertrophy work specific to the comp lift. Bicep was a bit sore after holding 485, so I strapped up for the last one - I’m happy with getting back up to 220 mixed grip without issue already & don’t need to rush it. I just need to show up healthy on meet day.

Nice workout…..as impressive as the total weight volume you pulled, is finishing with the 365x15 on hypertrophy after moving all that weight. Sounds like the bicep is holding up too….that soreness is probably a little strain, but as long as it’s not a pain, you should be good.
