This morning’s session was great. Low 60s in the garage, the tunes were on point, and my triceps & pecs got barbecued. No idea what my bodyweight is. Squat is Friday!

Also, clearing EQ should be down to under 20mg/wk. Test has been at 120mg/wk. After bloods Monday, pinned 60mg test e (skipped my Sunday shot to show trough on bloods), then again today. Will pin 60mg again Friday & Sunday, then 120mg before leaving for a week on vacation. This will raise my 2 week average over these weeks to 180mg. When I return the plan will be to go to 240mg/wk.

How’d you like the SSB JM press? Definitely something I’ve been meaning to try after watching an elitefts video

Are you worried about e sides at 240?

Nope; I am going on blast. It will be 18 weeks on 240 total mg or less by the time I am back from vacation.

So I will be raising test to 240mg and adding IML Gear Cream for a log for a month or so. From there, I think the rough plan is to increase test and see how I do at doses greater than 400mg - the ideal plan is to work that up and see where things become unsavory. From there I will probably wave test back some to where I liked best and then add in other compounds.

I have decided against trying to do anything aggressive for the moment with size or drugs - it’s not necessary. What I need is just to string together productive training consistently and get stronger again.

How’d you like the SSB JM press? Definitely something I’ve been meaning to try after watching an elitefts video

You know I heard about them years ago and never bothered to try them, but I just came across them again recently in a Ben Pollack book and now having my own I finally gave them a shot:

This is absolutely the best way to do JM Presses! I could not believe how much easier it makes it to perform predictable, uniform reps. This let me handle more weight with less elbow pain, and I felt it better explicitly in the backs of my arms.

Unscrew the handles. Take the closest grip possible. Lower pad straight down until it touches (only a few inches of travel), then roll it back to your chin by lowering the forearms towards your face, while keeping the bottom tips of the pad in contact where they touched. Contract the back of the triceps hard to roll it back to a vertical position as you press it back up.

Great sessions and plan for figuring out your ideal test dose. If I decide to run another cycle I think I will employ something similar.

Ahhhhh, I thought you were cursing 240

Bro I wish! I was on 120/120mg per week each of test and eq. When I pulled bloods at 9 weeks off blast, 7 weeks since starting EQ, RBC, Hgb & Hct were already just creeped out of range and Estradiol was lowww. So I dropped EQ 7 weeks ago now and have just been on 120mg test per week plus the clearing EQ, which is down to ~15mg/wk levels as of tomorrow.

Nice looking session. I need to go have a look at those stir the pots. I have an idea of what it may be but want to check them out and see if I want to add them in too.

Hey Hyde, is your wife’s competition this week? In any event, hope she crushes it!

Hey Hyde, is your wife’s competition this week? In any event, hope she crushes it!

Yes indeed! We are scrambling to get ready for the trip: we head out early Tuesday morning for the Olympia! She will be fasting Wednesday and cutting weight late at night, weighins Thursday at 9:30am, then it’s time to eat up & rehydrate for the competition on Friday and Saturday afternoon. I’m excited that there is going to be an expo again for it this year.

Wife was 148.X & 149.X yesterday morning and today thankfully, and she is water loading today already, so I am expecting a very smooth cut. She was really hanging around 153-154lbs, but we made the call to add in T3 at 50mcg at 3 weeks out, then bumped to 75mcg 2 weeks out, and finally raised clen from 50mcg to 60mcg 1 week out. That, in conjunction with almost daily cardio on top of training and work (she works on her feet) has finally gotten weight down to where I wanted it. She is getting some final cardio in now. Tomorrow begins no carbs or sodium along with distilled water, so there won’t be a lot of capacity for extra activity outside her work.

Last session before leaving tomorrow; I do plan to get my lifting done in Orlando this week. Little man has a cold/ear infection so had to get home to get him to the doctors before we head out tomorrow. 405 beltless wasn’t fast, but they were smooth & proper with no back issues so I’m very happy about them. Accessories felt light and the real challenge was sucking wind trying to get them done - I really must find the time to get some basic routine 30 min cardio in a few times a week.

Made it to Orlando yesterday. Wife woke up 142.8 so she is way ahead of schedule; let her drink distilled water today until 3:30pm and planning on no hot baths now - weighins are tomorrow, 10/7, at 9:30am.

Heard Iron Religion was a great gym in Orlando so headed there to get my bench in. Man, what an experience! Turns out this is THE place for the pros before the Olympia. I am not kidding when I say that I saw: Charles Glass, Dennis James, Chad Nichols all there together, as well as Big Ramy (2020 Mr. Olympia), Brandon Curry (2019 Mr. Olympia), Roelly Winklaar, and James Hollingshead. Plus a lot of other competitors getting final workouts in.

James was posing for some cameramen and I got a couple great shots, then later he came over to the ab tower by my bench and was super friendly: he stopped to take a selfie with me and chat a bit, even took time to tell me goodbye when he was through. Really just as friendly as he sounds on podcasts.

Really a very surreal experience, just training next to the top bodybuilders in the world. The gym had a remarkable amount of equipment. Hoping to go back for squats on Saturday morning! Worth the $16 pass.

Sounds like an awesome time!

That's awesome and damn that condition on him!

Oh yes and of course good luck to your wife!

Vacation is going awesome; I’ll dump everything when I get time, probably not until we get back.

Wife took last, by a good margin, but she did exactly what she was capable of at this time, no injuries or regrets in the slightest, and truly the entire family had a blast with the comp - best America’s Strongest Women I’ve been to yet! She dieted off 38-40lbs successfully in 14 weeks and still got strong enough to go out and get in the comp.

Everything is great!

Sounds like she did great! Progress!

Dope! That’s fantastic!

And $16 for the gym pass, lol — crappy family gyms here chArge $20 for a pass.

Sounds like some good memories were made!

Ahhhh, where to begin. Orlando was great. Terrible drivers, but it’s a big city. The resort we stayed had multiple pools, and the Olympia was a very neat expo. Just like being in a condensed area of the Arnold, but a little easier to get around. Glad to see people allowed to mix again at their own risk, like humans. Samples were pretty plentiful, and it was cool to see some industry folks in person walking around like Dexter Jackson and Tony Huge (man you should have seen the pants he had on, like aluminum foil ). Dexter Jackson actually came out of the IHOP as we went into after weigh-ins, and then I saw him at the expo again. Not sure if I mentioned it, but Roelly Winklaar did a photo shoot on the bench directly next to me while I was training the first time at Iron Religion. Also, Johnny Jackson has the smallest calves I think I have ever seen; that guy needs to seriously up his SEO game. In general, it’s crazy how small most of these bodybuilders are in real life. The muscle size is incredible, but they are so small compared to the open pro strongmen. James Hollingshead didn’t disappoint one bit, though. Bobby Thompson and Robert Oberst were both at the Olympia (current & former American Logpress record holders & pro strongmen) and THEY are big dudes in anyone’s book.

America’s Strongest Woman was ran fantastically with exciting events and an awesome turnout of 20 women across the light, middle, & heavy classes. There were intensely close battles in every weightclass, but Victoria Long in the heavyweight/open pro is entirely on another level. She swept the show with 1sts in every single event in the heavy class. Look her up; she is absolutely huge, and not remotely fat. Her performance was indomitable - it was Victoria, and then everyone else. She exuded dominance and the combination of brute strength & remarkable athleticism was incredible to watch. She hit a 255lb logpress and simply stopped because it was enough to win the max event. I suspect she can do 285+ currently. I believe she is likely the strongest woman on the planet at this time, overall. I got to chat with her husband for a bit, who is 52 and competed in Master’s Nationals which was held in the morning both days before the women’s pro show, and he was very cool. Talking longevity (he’s been lifting for over 30 years), he encouraged me to start taking mobility and conditioning work more seriously sooner, if he could give his younger self advice.

We had our first night out with friends since our anniversary after the show Saturday, which was terrific, and then took a trip to Daytona Shores Beach the next night. This was an excellent beach, my son’s first time, and a great experience for all of us. It was so cool to share that with him and watch him play in the sand. Then we headed to Jacksonville for a couple nights staying with some family we rarely get to see, and had some good meals and beach time there as well.

I finally feel like we had a real vacation, not one I need to recover from afterwards. I am extremely proud of my wife, and we are both excited for our training ahead of us!

We were busy doing vacation this week so doing the combo template for this deload week now that we’re back. Last night was just technical practice, and tonight will be a couple muscle accessories for each lift. May or may not get a fluff session in this weekend since we have a family wedding Sunday.

Vacation sounds awesome dude!

I feel inclined to offer my younger self the same advice re conditioning lol!

Your wife is amazing, returning to competition at the elite level so soon after making a human!

Glad you get to experience all those amazing moments we have with our children as they grow and experience things for the first time. It's good for the soul to gain fresh perspective of this amazing and beautiful universe.

9 months old today! He was 44th percentile for weight so he has improved slightly since 6 months there, and now up to 67th percentile for height. He is so much taller suddenly than before we went on vacation, and he got his first tooth on the day we went to Florida. He also learned to wave ‘hi’ and ‘bye’ on the trip and started dancing to music - this all in less than 10 days! Crazy how fast it goes.

Surprisingly exhausting session, but it got a bit of volume on most muscles fairly efficiently overall. Doing the leg curls on the RH is a bit jerky and really weights up hard at the top of the contraction, but I bet if I threw a band around the pendulum it would at least smooth it out some.

Obviously an incredible bodybuilder, but I was impressed by how genuine and humble he was. I mean the guy was still flat & hungry, 2 days out from the first night of the most important competition of his career, and he gladly took the time to chat with a fan & take a selfie. Seemed just like his self on the podcast.

I also thought it said a lot about him that he was wearing a Luke Sandoe shirt.

F-ing hook grip.

Any advice for someone who has never HG’d any significant weight? Just suck it up?

The pain aspect, yeah it’s simply a matter of desensitization through repetition - like when doing a very high rep set, you simply must ignore the pain; you have to reconcile with the fact that it will hurt but you will be fine.

Now for the callus aspect, that is delicate for me. The most important thing is to not tear my thumb skin. You have to build up the skin tolerance, but even then it can’t take a lot of volume. Every time I’ve gotten up near 600, I’m in danger of tearing skin (which is a huge problem at a competition). Most of your rep work will need to be done with straps most likely, and taping your thumbs at other times can be useful as well. You can’t tape in the USPA, but some feds allow it. The most I have pulled hookgrip is only 606, compared to 630 over/under.

But for my back, training Sumo at least for the moment made a lot of sense, but I have found over/under feels terrible on sumo for me so that also meant hooking. But the weights are light and I’m not in a rush so it’s a good opportunity to start fresh.

A lot of guys work up hookgrip to a top set, then throw straps on for the remainder of the top or backdown work. Others use straps all the way up in warmups and only hook at the top for a few sets, but you really need your hook dialed in to do that. And most guys benefit from extra grip work on the side to compliment things.

Most guys, if they get strong enough, will have to find a way to train their grip.

Question- how often would you incorporate reverse hypers? I have my titan reverse hyper coming in Wednesday and just wondered at what frequency you think I’d benefit from
It.

Depends on how heavy you train it. As restoration/flushing/loosening/prehab you can do it daily. As muscle work or in a rehab context, probably not more than eod. Start light and low frequency and bump it up as you feel it out. You probably can’t go wrong with 2x a week.

Understand you CAN overdo it, you can make things worse instead of better, and more weight or work isn’t always the answer. Doing it prior to sessions generally seemed beneficial, but doing it after compressive stuff would make my back hurt - totally the opposite of what some find. It’s individual. I know guys who hurt doing it normally, but use it one leg at a time religiously.

The one thing I would definitely not recommend is curling/uncurling the neck during use to intentionally floss the nerves under load. There is a reason the cat/camel therapy movement is always unloaded.

Also, don’t swing the weight. Better to maintain control with your muscles than get jerked around by weights you can’t really handle for the sake of it.

Good stuff as usual!

One thing I’d add is to think a plank position with the upper body. Tight grip on the handles, elbows driven into the pad, and double chin position. It’s far more tiring, but helps to decompress the spine and hit the appropriate areas more effectively.
