Hyde’s Strength Odyssey

Damn, brother. Really sorry to hear about your Dad. One of the hardest things to do in life is lose a parent. Hope you and the family are handling things as best you can and that you’re able to take the time to grieve.

It gets easier with time, but not sure it ever really goes away.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts & condolences. I think this has been easier to accept so far overall because I have expected it at some point for many years now, plus the way he got to go with us all there beside him.

Had to go down to my dad’s old apartment yesterday morning to meet my siblings so people could claim things they wanted with us all together, so I didn’t get to train until the afternoon coming in straight from the interstate. Still, the session went well: made a little progress from last week & did a bit better on the self unrack. Shoulder was happier and stayed that way.

Been SEVEN years since I did 470x10 on a powerbar, so I wanted to do this one today in memory of my dad. Knew I was going to have to send it to make it happen, but when things got hard at rep 7 I just thought about him hanging on until I got there to see me one last time. Was pretty tuckered after, plus I knew I can’t squat until next Tuesday anyway with the memorial this weekend, so I saved hams & lats for tomorrow night.

Your dad smiled from heaven at you. Way to get the work in, even when it’s emotional driven, it’s a good release.

Still hitting scap pushups before benching? Great movement to grease up with before self unrack.

Yeah actually before almost every day; it’s fast and feels good.

Something Ben Pauli said on the episode of Table Talk he was just on was that he has guys who struggle because all of their scapular retraction is assisted by the bench pinning them down passively - but what are they doing for pressing without scapular support, that forces the retraction to be strengthened? And he was talking about strictpressing, pushups, and pressing off a heavy duty Bosu Ball for accessory volume like Louie used to do.

I realized that my inability to do overhead now is what has caused the problems with maintaining my retraction on unracks and db work. It created a weakness that begot bad habits that cemented the cycle of weakness. BUT I can do pushups, so I’m going to start adding those. And maybe throwing in Swissbar OHP during warmups, as that fires up my inactive Serratus as well. Just whatever ROM I can get on those, not loaded, but it seemed helpful the other day.

This also made me recall Fred Hatfield even had an adjustable angle bench made that he promoted for DB hypertrophy work, because it had free motion pads that allowed your scaps to move naturally where you laid your shoulders on it (instead of being pinned down).

That’s such an awesome PR in dedication to your Dad. And like Sam said he was looking down on you with a big smile and a big thumbs up….Great job.😎👍

good on you dude, great motivation to find and build from. I was pushing something hard the other day and forced an extra set cause I heard you in my head saying "you don't have to lift, you GET to lift."

Great session, and memorial set. Well done Sir!

Went to the commercial gym tonight for my lats & hamstring work to finish off deadlift day. Planned on doing weighted GHR instead of Good Mornings thinking my hams & erectors would be too shot, but something made me start warming up on Devotions instead & they just felt too good to pass. These are when you do a pause deadlift on the way up, an RDL rep down & up, then lower conventional for 1 total “rep”. Basically 2 for 1, and they hit both erectors & hams with quite a bit of TUT. Had a legitimate backpump after the second set of 5.

Maxed out the cable lying leg curl, but I slowed the eccentric to get more out of my reps. Added an extra rowing exercise since I was fresher than usual for all this.

Never tried Devotions…..sound intense with a lot of TUT.

Also, signed up for the EliteFTS Crew training retreat next month, the 13th & 14th. Pretty excited about that; it was a very cool place to train the time I got to work with Swede, so really looking forward to the group training atmosphere.

Well, it’s probably over 100% more TUT per rep when you consider both the paused & RDL portions take longer than a conventional pull. After those followed by leg curls to failure, I just didn’t need any more for my hams - they let me know!

Ha, I bet….considering all that, that makes the sets of 325 and 350 for 5 that much more impressive. I bet your hams were toast.💪

I’ve never done devotions but you better bet that’s going in my bag!

Never heard of devotions before but definitely looks like a good burner and good grip practice. we used to do something similar with various complexes like a paused deadlift into a hang clean etc. I definitely think complexes add some positive mental stim as well and makes it a bit more fun.

They’re just something Rhyss Keane made up for an offseason pulling variation to keep the absolute weights down but get a lot of good positional and hypertrophy work in. He’s a 900lb conventional deadlifter

Lol I don’t think he’s expecting any royalties anytime soon from the cheapass powerlifting community, but I figure I’d give credit where it’s due. You do this stuff long enough, sometimes you’ll take variety even if it might be less optimal!

For the TYAO private coaching thing, or you mean for the Crew Retreat? Because the TYAO is just a few people basically getting put through the wringer by Dave & is super expensive. But the retreat is for the podcast supporters to come train together & is very affordable.

The crew retreat. If it wasn’t in December I would go. You’re absolutely correct it is very affordable. Two of my kids that are out of state will be in for Christmas so I’d feel really bad leaving to go to Ohio while they’re in town.

We had the memorial service for Dad yesterday; went really well & it was great to have family together. There were so many people that turned out to share stories of how he touched their lives.

Good one in the cool garage this morning. Kept the pace up, tunes cranked, and put 10lbs on my 2x25. Pretty tight from all the driving yesterday, but forced my way into a solid workout nonetheless.

I’m glad the memorial service went well. It’s always a comfort and peaceful feeling you get when you hear stories from people you’ve never heard or just relive the ones you forgot. Continued prayers to your family.

And those 2 sets of 25…..I have a love hate relationship with those. Throwing them back in myself this week for a while. Nice work adding more weight.

Sounds like it was a good send off, great session also.

I’ll have to look up what Swede band pull apart is guessing he has a pretty decent variation of it.

He will loop a band through another that has been choked to a rack. So you still pull/flex the primary band apart with the rear delts, but it being looped through another band makes it just a little bit like a facepull also. Band choked through a band is super kind on joints for any accessory, but you get a good contraction.

That’s so good to hear that you had a great memorial for your Dad. And I’m sure it blessed him hearing people share how he touched their lives.👍

Happy the memorial service for Pops went well. Sounds like some damn good training to follow it with. Way to keep your head up with everything going on.

How you liking that ISF bar? Look similar to the Cerberus bar with the slimmer collars yeah?
This one has a totally standard collar size; very much like a bare steel Texas powerbar with a bit more aggressive knurling.

It was a gift from WFreiling and been a terrific bar. Held up perfectly when I squat 585 on it a few years back,

Haven’t gained any weight since last time 9 days ago, but I was definitely more powerful overall. Hacksquats are becoming stronger than ever, and squats felt like I had more there but not without overly relying on my low back. Shut the AMRAP down to avoid bad technique; I continue to need more leg strength to match my back/core. Had to skip lunges to take my son to school, but it was a great session.

Got a root canal done today a few hours after squatting. Tooth started hurting Friday night (of course, when you can’t call the dentist) to the point I was sure something was off. Definitely hurt worse Saturday; made it easy to fast until the family meal after Dad’s memorial. Then Sunday it became serious constant pain, food was getting difficult. Yesterday, Monday, I called first thing and got an emergency appointment for today. Just bombed ibuprofen all day to get by & gummed food on the good side of my mouth. It was bad; basically just guzzled ramen noodles and protein shakes.

Today the dentist said No doubt, the old silver filling my previous dumbass dentist put in 13 years ago has caused your tooth to crack & the root is infected - CT scan showed it had even spread to my sinus on that side. When he did the canal, he discovered my molar had 5 (FIVE) roots. Most people have 2-3. 4 is rare, but 5 is such a rare anomaly they try to do case studies on those people; well under 1% of people are believed to have 5 roots.

So I guess you really could say I’m built different… a true 1%er 😝

All I can think of is that stupid movie cast away trying to break that tooth off with a pair of figure skates, good luck doing that with 5 roots! That’s crazy!

Good thing you got in and taken care of asap

Man, root canals can be rough….glad you got it taken care of. Five roots, that’s wild…you even have a good foundation for chewing food.😬

man I barely even trust dentists anymore. I had one that I had asked for years about tooth whitening and straightening and he kept telling me, nah I wouldn't worry about it cause you drink coffee and your teeth really aren't as crooked as you think. then a few years later the cars in the parking lot upgraded, the staff grew and they turned into a little profit center trying to upsell me on everything like I was getting my oil changed.

Hate to hear about the painful weekend. I am glad you got it squared away.

Feeling beat up physically with lots of stress as well as we prepare to head to Texas tonight. Gotta leave at midnight to make our 4:30am boarding time. Weighins for Worlds at 10am CST tomorrow for the wife.
Good luck to your wife. I hope she kills it! You guys try to enjoy the time away the best you can. Safe travels.

is the airport a pretty long drive for you guys? ours is only about an hour but once you figure in parking, etc I know it can become a bit tedious for travel up here.

It’s a little over 2 hours to the hotel we park & shuttle from. Left about 12:15, caught their 2:40am shuttle, bag drop and we were entering security an hour before boarding since we had no snafus, accidents to get through, ice on the road etc.

Heading home from Worlds. Competition started Friday; wife rolled her ankle in her last event training session 1 week out on the turf during her sandbag medley. So she was on crutches with a wrapped foot while we went to my Dad’s memorial service last week & she had to get all her work shifts covered to rest it. We brought in some MK, BPC 2x daily, 5mg Var nightly & put 10mg of TB500 through it over 5 days - we made massive progress fast and she was off crutches in 3 days, painfully walking. Then at the tournament we had the Strongman Doc, a longtime friend, adjust it & her whole body before they kinesio taped it up. Instantly after adjustment, her lymphatic system was lined up again and any inflammation was removed immediately. Roadmap vascularity, and it now felt great (we had already administered 800mg ibuprofen that morning).

So she was able to compete, basically to her full ability, except we took care to slow down transitions and focus on smooth safe executions. She did a 165 log for 4 reps cleaning every rep (a personal best), carried the 400lb super-wide frame with no knurling ~60ft, deadlift 365lbs (biggest pull in like 10 years), and ran & loaded the 4 sandbags (150-175lbs) each 50ft in 44 seconds. Most importantly, she didn’t reinjure anything - didn’t even need follow-up ibuprofen after the 2 days. Her class was 23 women deep & stacked, as for Masters 40+ age there was simply under 160lbs bodyweight or Open weight. She was in 10th place after day 1, but dropped to 15 from day 2 since her deadlift was bottom of the pack, and they only take the top 10 onto the Finals on Day 3. Sadly those are great events for her that she didn’t get to do, but we were so happy she didn’t get hurt while still getting to compete after all her hard work. She had a blast, and we really got to enjoy watching Sunday: there were truly some awesome feats of strength seen! Plus, this was the first trip we’ve gotten to take just the two of us in ages, which was so fun getting to actually hang out together as a couple again without having to parent. It was really great for us! Just a blast of a weekend, lots of adrenaline, some good food, time with friends, and memories made.

We will be home today in time to pick my son up from school, and I’ve taken this holiday week off work, so things are good.
