Hi-Point firearms

FL3X MAGNUM

Legend
Guys, any experience with some of their handguns?
I currently have their 9mm carbine rifle and love it. I've fired a couple thousand rounds through it, only cleaned it a few times, also fired a lot of cheaper grade hollow point rounds through it and never once have had it jam.
I am getting a nice bonus check soon and was considering purchasing one or two handguns to add to the collection. I was looking at Hi-Point's .45 cal for recreational use, and possibly the .380 to carry.
Does anybody have an opinion or perhaps any experience with them?

do not buy a hi point... if there is one thing i know its fire arms. hi point are not well made and just because you had luck with one of there guns does not mean that they are a good company. 380 you should look in to keltec, they are really good quality and very affordable. the glock g6 is a single stack 45, it is thin and nice to carry. it holds 6 rounds. a bit more pricey but you have a 45 cal when **** hits the fan.(i have this on me at all times). whats your price range?

I'm basically obsessed with firearms. I own several pistols, rifles, shotguns, AR15's.

I have a .9millimeter hi point and honestly, I don't like it at all. It jams way more than necessary and has jammed with a bullet in the chamber before and caused potential harm. I've got a .45 hi point as well but I just have it laying in my gun cabinet. I've been meaning to sale both of them but just haven't.

I remember hunting in a ground blinde this season and seeing a few coyotes and I ended up bringing that ****ty .9mm hi point and sure enough, when I went to put a bullet in the chamber the damn thing jammed on me and wouldn't go through.

I like Glock and I love 1911's. My .45 that stays under my truck seat goes just about everywhere I go even if it's for a hike in the mountains. I watch enough horror movies to know the importance of having a gun around. The last time I counted I had 19 guns in the house but that was last year. I buy, sale and trade so much it's hard to keep count.

What in particular are you looking for? Self defense, bad neighborhood, typical range shooting, just collecting?

Glock, S&W, Walther, Beretta, Colt. Those are some good ones, but honestly hi points are mostly crap.

Do you own any rifles, shotguns, AR's, etc.?

Hi-Point is a brick and very unreliable. Handguns are to be used for life-threatening situations, and i am not going to bet my life on a $140 gun.

What would be better on the lower end of the price scale a Ruger, Taurus?

If I had the money and time I'd be all over a Kimber Warrior or the ParaOrdinace 1911 that holds 14 :) but i dont so i can keep on dreaming

Ruger is king of wheel guns (revolvers), and Taurus makes quality copy-cats of higher end firearms. Cant go wrong with either one, and should stay in the $300+ range for those.

Keltec makes excellent quality at affordable prices. taurus has come along way. they use to make there guns out of stamped metal. now they actually make some good quality stuff. look up the glock g6. its perfect for carrying

argh, I can't believe nobody mentioned Heckler & Koch. Their 45 cal MK23 was the only gun to meet SOCOM's requirement of 30,000 +p rounds without failures. Granted thats a $2400 pistol, but all of their products are high quality.

Honestly from all the reviews I read (believe me that with the dual safeties + a suppressor is bad a$$ and what 3.5k? :) ) they jam like no other on most ammo (like you have to use the one and only brand they recommend).. A USP Tach would be nice, as well.

I guess if you are going into the uber highend there are Wilson Combat 1911's too or maybe a scratch build one like they make on American Guns :) man i watch to many firearm shows on cable. :)

h&k are awesome but he has a hi point, i dont think hes going to be dropping a few grand on a pistola. if your looking for high quality that will retain its value h&k, sig, and Beretta are my favorite. good guns at affordable price would be glock, springfield, keltec, S&W. IMO you should get an assault rifle. i would start with an SKS. cheap and awesome + unlimited customization 7.62 is where its at. AR, the 5.56 is too small of a round and people are way to proud of them.

+1 good info right there!

I did have endless fun specing out a completely modded to the hilt (all new furnature, sights, etc) Springfield m14 SOCOM II. nice way to drop 3 or 4 grand :)

I know they are quality guns (springfields) for the money but call me crazy I want something US made if possible :)

If you're looking for a carry gun, then Kahr is the way to go. Glocks are good, a little chunky, as well as the Springfield XD's, however they are great if you carry outside-the-waistband in a nice holster. A lot depends on your budget, and what you're wanting it for. Some great choices have been said here, though most are $500 or above.

"guns for show - knives for a pro" as Soap said..

how about the mossberg SNAFU tube - 500 cruiser with a bunch of other survival things in a watertight tube?

springfield makes great guns too

Wow thanks for all the input guys. Definitely got me doing more research now lol.
I don't want to drop 2k on a pistol, but with that being said, I am not looking to buy the cheapest gun out there either. I would like to keep my price point around $800, or if I were indeed to get two I would want to keep it around a grand.
I was actually looking at a chrome 45 that Taurus makes, looks pretty nice and feels great in my hands.
I tried talking to a few of the gun freaks I work with about carry on weapons and most of them suggested 380's but the thing is, most of the guys I work with are short and skinny, would make sense for them to carry something smaller.

Also about the SKS comment. I love that freaking gun!!!! Bought one about 8 years ago, had to do some re finishing to it, modified the pin a bit and slide a bit for less jams or duds, and it has been a very fun rifle. Ended up giving it to a buddy to hold onto though because I have limited space in my apt currently.
Only other gun I have is a break action 20 gauge that my dad got for me when I was young. I don't use it.

yeah sks are alot of fun. they're easy to work on and parts are plentiful. i urge you to check out the glock g6 it is very thin for a 45, because its only a single stack 6+1, its great to carry in or out of the waistband and it will drop someone.

just dont get a 380, its more of a woman gun, really light easy to shoot and no kick. if your looking for small, i would go with a 9mm that can run +p rounds, these are higher velocity and will stop anything despite there size. not good for in the home cuz they will go through wall after wall.

I have a Beretta 92G, it is badass comes with night sights and other features for law enforcement, the 92f is a much cheaper version, little bulky but everyone knows its a gun when you pull it out.

i collect Colt 1911, they are my favorite, i carry one of my baby's some times but really i just carry my G6. its unbreakable

Ok I know a lot of guys rag on the Hi-points and rightly so. But if your having so many problems send it back to get fixed. The warrenty is on of the best in the gun world.

Now on the a side point I don't own a Hipoint.

To answer you questions.

If your looking a 1911s 45. Rock Island Arms is a great company and there making 1911 GI start around $350. And go up. Great reviews on all the gun web sites. And just because it is cheaper then all the big names everyone thinks there crap. No they are not for the price. Plus if you ever want to a 1911 to build on it is a great base to start on. Taurus is not a bad name either.

Also in .45s Glocks are great guns to the Glock 21, 30 and 36 are great pistols 21 is the full size, 30 mid, 36 sub compact. Recoil could get you with the smaller sized Glocks.

Nother side note I'm a Glock Armorer so I'm kinda parshal to Glocks. Tho Glocks only cover 15% of the Pistols I own.
I also carry a Glock 19 IWB about 50% of the time, the other 50% is a Walther P99c 9MM. Smaller size and very powerful.
I've also bought a Glock 17 Gen. 4 from a guy of a AR15 forum for $450. Normal cost in Gun store $500 and up.

On Carry guns any gun will work (really!) I would not carry a HiPoint. Just don't want the idea that it may jam. But any gun can jam. (Remember gun maintance is top the number 1 reson a gun malfuntions).

Should you carry a .22, .380, 9mm, 357 sig, .40/10mm, .45, is up to you. And what you feel comfertable with. Most Gun Shops/Ranges have rental guns try out some that you like first. Spending $5-$8 to rent a gun is better to spend then $500 on a gun you like the way it looks but don't like the way it feels or shoots. Look at used guns too. I've gotten some great guns that were used. MOST people buy a gun and shoot it at a range maybe 100 to 200 rounds at a time if not less. Most people even less cost of ammo is high. (Unless you reload.) Most guns and their barrels have a life of over 25,000 rounds. Before you have to even have they looked at and/or fixed. (Remember maintance is key) And a lot if not most gun shops will sell a warrenty on a used gun.

Very awesome, thanks a lot for the help!

Dude for your carry gun check out the s&w bodyguard or the rugger lcp .380

Both are awesome weapons

For a .45 I highly recommend Springfield xdm .45

Rock island are very good for an entry level 1911, once you've held a 1911 no gun feels the same.

it's been what, nearly 90 years since the last real changes were made to it? if it ain't broke don't fix it :)

Third vote I've seen for Springfield. I looked it up on Buds Guns, looks bad ass.

there is nothing to hate about the xmd's they look great - have grip and trigger safety's plus round in chamber and striker indicators and are supposed to be super accurate for the price.

im not the biggest fan of the xd's but they do have a 357 mag with built in laser. there's comforting about having a lazer in your pocket!!

Oh!! Also remember if SHTF and you have to defend yourself. Remember your going to probley say bye bye to your CCW pistol. Even if your in the right. What would you rather lose a $1000 1911 or a $400-$550 glock or xdm? I don't want to lose any of them but just think about it.

Because most Police will confiscate the gun. And they don't treat it too well from what I've heard. Not that I think the Officers with kick the crap out of the gun it just not keeped in a good environment. (Now I say most PO there are exptions.) After the investigation I think you would get your gun back.

Ruger makes the LCP 9MM and you can get one for I think around $350? Another good carry gun. And I think you can get it with a laser if you want.

honestly who doesn't want a laser?

Though I'd add this web site for info on CCW and Laws. You can also make your own CCW maps so you know where your home state CCW is good.

This is what you can make:
(I have a Non-Resident Permits for Florida and Utah. I have no CCW in my own State. :dunno: )

Damn... all the important stuff has been said besides this: If you have a firearm for home defense/ccw you should have a firearm savvy lawyer on retainer. If you have to use the weapon, DO NOT give a statement without talking to your counsel first. Inform the officer that you would be glad to cooperate, but you are invoking your right to counsel before giving a statement.

by far the best advice given..... no matter what the circumstances, when the police are involved make sure you have a lawyer present. most of the time they are just fishing so if you have a lawyer they will move on.

And for a weapon to Cary the s&w bodyguard .380 comes with a laser built in.

They can be had for well under 400

I have a Rock Island 1911, it's a great entry level 1911. I've really enjoyed it but will be selling it for a Sig 1911 or Kimber. All in all though, it's been a trusty accurate pistol.

Also just picked up this M9, shot it Sunday, I SOOO love it. Happy hunting and good luck on your purchase!

Ok minor 1911 hijack here:

I know the diff with s/a and d/a revolvers. But I have read that the 1911 is s/a too. So that means you have to **** the hammer back to fire the first shot right? It would not fire with the hammer down?

no, the recoiling of the slide c0cks the hammer. and for proper carry it is carried c0cked and locked" or "condition 1"

ManBeast

So when you chamber the round it's good to go?

And know condition 1 is really only smart if you have a 1911 or a dual safety like the hk mod 0 :)

rock island - kimber... you must of come into some money. jealous!!! youll love kimber it is by far the most perfectly balanced gun i own.

i keep all my weapons chambered at all times(the ones that are not in a safe). why have them if you are not ready to use them( i obviously dont have kids). this does mean i have to maintenance them more often but i like playing with them so its not a big deal.

as for duel safety, i think its overkill. most guns trigger weight is quite high, its not really a concern unless you are messing with match grade weapons. i have a collection of tec-9's, they require quite a bit of up keep and know how to get them to function properly, and the safety on them is on the firing pin. u just click it out like a mm. you cant ever tell if the safety is on. FYI dont buy a tec-9 they are crap, im in love with them but ive also been working on them for 8 years.

Yep, you can only activate the safety if the hammer is back. The 1911 will also half-**** which locks up the trigger. Once the hammer is back and safety engaged, you also have the beaver tail grip safety on the back of the handgrip, so while holstered you should still be double safe.

I'm not for certain but I think the Para Ordnance LDA may be double action..

i'm of the mind set (and have been proven right many times) if your going to buy something tools, guitars, amps, etc just buy the good stuff to begin with and save on having to buy a few other cheaper things to only end up getting the good one later..

then again i don't have the money or the time or the range to properly train.. hence no gun for me :(
