On February 4, 2010, Senators John McCain and Byron Dorgan introduced S. 3002, the "Dietary Supplement Safety Act." This legislation would mandate that every dietary supplement would have to go through a brand new process of government review in order to stay on the market.

If this bill becomes law your health care choices will be drastically reduced, and many of the supplements available today will become illegal. This and other provisions of this misguided legislation affect ALL dietary supplements, including vitamins, minerals, herbs, sports, and diet products.

The supposed purpose of the bill is to make dietary supplements "safer," which is ironic because dietary supplements already have an excellent safety record. It also ignores the fact that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration already have the powers they need to police the market.

Except for the fact that current laws don't force the food and drug admin. to check supplements. Which means that triple whey protein powder you might have just purchased, could be filled with ground up bean and cheese burritos rather than the whey protein concentrate you were looking for. Yes, the bill will limit supplement companies ability to sneak steroids into supplements, such as NOExplode, but It will also make it less sketchy, and less time consuming, to find a good supplement.
 
just like now all this is going to do is open up a black market trading operation is our economy. All supps will be getting traded in the back of gncs or over internet sites resulting in unsafe and illegal activity. If it aint broke dont fix it.

Governmental control never works in these situations, it will only hamper innovation and squash desire to enter the market with new brilliant ideas.

Consumers can make up their own minds, third party testing with concrete results is the way to do it. I don't care if Crack is in the damn pill, as long as we know it is real crack.

Put it int he hands of uncle sam and you are going to need a script for your Vitamin E.
 
I totally agree with you DAdams. I just have a problem with the fact that the majority of third party testing is sketchy. I've seen so many supps say they worked with a college or certain lab to test their product, but could never find a single research article or lab report confirming the supplements claims. And as the consumer, I wouldn't mind a little governmental control if it means I dont have to spend hours on the internet trying to find whether or not the supplement I want to buy is legit.

I think you are missing my point... there is no such thing as a little governmental control. If they are allowed to take over the Supp industry, and erase the DSHEA act, you wont have anything you are speaking of on the market anymore. Creatine can be hard on the kidneys... BANNED.... to much B6 can be harmful... BANNED.

By third party, I mean an agency setup by a private org for testing new supplements as they are released. The problem with this idea is funding. There is no market for this, cause a company will not pay to have their stuff tested.

That isn't the case FINALLY GMP will stop all of that. The new regs, which everyone has to do come June will stop all of that nonsense.

GMP requires testing at all levels on ALL ingredients and very strict controls on who can manufacture sports supplements.

This bill will cause way more problems because every company will have to justify itself.
 
i think it also leaves the door open to political pressure on the verdict of some substances no matter what their evaluation.
 
Governmental regulations never ceese to amaze me. Ban the firsr peohormone by Mr. Patrick Arnold and good ol' M1 test comes along bolder and with more sides than your neighborhood kingpin anadrol. Regulations make the black market more profitable. Any body remember prohibition. Until 2002 the middle east was doing well with black market pharmaceuticals in conjunction with chinese muslims to fund terorrism...but I get ahead of myself..anyways like someone with great knowledge above stated the old elochialism "if it aint broke don't fix it"

yea i hope not, they are going to take away or lively hood of working out, now you know the government authority does not workout, soon there going to the think Protein will be ill-eagle.
 
assuming vitamins and protein are legal (lol) i guess it will save me time and money looking at other "supplements" as my options will be illegial black market steroids or nothing.

Seriously, anytime the words "federal" and "control" are put into the same sentence, it's not good. 9/10 times it's unconstitutional. If the gov't would just take a few moments to read that nice ol' document, they might see it. Then again, they'd debate the meaning of every little word in there until someone finally got sick of it and it ended in a stalemate where we all lose. This country was founded on the principals of minimalistic government, NOT one that has their fingers in everything. That's a load of crap.

Concept: Supplements < Big Pharma Discuss.
 
just to clarify for those who may have not gone to that link and read the proposed bill. this is not related to ph bans and bodybuilding supplements but all vitamin, mineral, health, and herbal supplements. this has been proposed before in the past. the community of health supplement users is vastly larger than the bodybuilding community and their related supplements. therefor - there has been larger opposition to this earlier versions of this bill. i do not know the outlook or forcast for this recent proposition as it entered the race after the ph and dietary aid bans and there may be new focus on health supplements in general to be strong enough to support this ban this time around.
