I just saw a thread where several guys were talking about struggling with smoking or dipping. I thought we might need a thread dedicated just to encouraging each other to stay the course. My name is stankyleg, and I used to smoke

Thanks man. Congrats on hitting the 3 week mark. And thanks for starting the thread, hopefully some that are struggling will be able to find help and support here.
 
Great job guys. :-). I have been tobacco free just over a year.
 
It's been around 2 months for me. I wish I knew how I did it to tell you guys but I don't. One day I just got tired of it and quit. I use to smoke and dip which is ridiculous btw lol.
 
For those that are interested in quitting chewing look into Jake's Mint Chew. I tried all sorts of "fake" chew and this was the closest to the real thing. For me I had to use fake chew because I missed the sensation of chew/relaxing with something in my lip. I've been chew free for just over a year after about 5 years of tobacco use. I know how hard it can be to quit, but think of the money saved and health benefits of stopping cigarettes or chewing tobacco!

Quit once for 3 months, which isn't really a "quit", just a lag in the habit. Took it back up and still doing it, plus dip, and on occasion, even a pipe (which I don't inhale but do enjoy). I wish I could quit. I've tried. Something in me just isn't ready yet. When it is, I will give it a go. Props to all of you who were able to kick it. This crap is worse than a meth habit, I swear. (Not that I've had one of those, just sayin'...)

It will happen man. Mostly it was a mental thing for me. Had a hell of a time imagining not smoking. Now I have the same difficulty thinking I used to smoke.

You gotta get pissed about it. At least I had to do that. I quit for five yrs once.
 
Honestly you have to DECIDE to quit. If any part of you is hesitant then the gum, health stuff, whatever won't happen. As someone said in the other thread you have to want it. That said it is doable, you just have to replace when you intake tobacco with a different habit. Once you can replace those habits and get through when you NEED a cig or chew then you have it licked. And once its licked don't let it back. I quit a million times before quitting for good. Now I won't touch a can of chew because I know one dip and I may be hooked again.
 
When I quit I started doing long runs outdoors (fuk treadmills!) and upping the intensity of my routines. After a very short time the thought of smoking a cigarette was foul to me. I had no withdrawals , just the occasional craving if I was at the bar, and the smell of a fresh cigarette lit was sweet for a long time. Now i can't stand it.

Running doesn't hurt so bad without all that junk clogging the lungs either. I'm finding that out more every day.
 
I smoked on and off since I was 14 back when Joe Camel was cool and I wanted to be cool too. March of 2009 I picked up a fresh* pack of Marlboro Reds before a fraternity event. I lit one up, took two drags, and then openly stated "You know what? I dont want this." And handed off my pack. That was the end of it.

*All tobacco grown in the U.S. is first sold and distributed overseas as they make more selling them in Europe/Asia/ etc because of tarrifs. If youve ever tasted an American brand in Germany its waaay better. They take whats left over here and blend it to make it taste better. They get the good stuff. We get shwag.

That's the motivation to quit. Go run 5 miles then think about having to do that again before you submit to a craving. Think "if I smoke im gonna pay for it tommorow when I run."
 
I quit smoking 17 months ago. It was difficult and I still get cravings maybe 3 times/week but like others have said, I know if I smoke again I'll be re-addicted right away.

It's a terrible addiction, anyone who is undecided whether they want to quit or not needs to ask themselves, do they really want to be the guy dragging an oxygen bottle around and barely managing *that*, never mind stairs or walks of more than 100 m (yards) or so. For those dudes lifting weights is at best a happy memory. I'm talking about COPD, I believe that 50% of smokers over the age of 50 yrs will get it, that's not real good odds.

I realise that this isn't exactly a *nice* post, but COPD is an extremely serious problem that nearly all long term smokers will face. People don't seem to know too much about it though, so right here is my PSA for the day.
 
Im new to the site and happened across the quitting smoking thread I quit 2 1/2 weeks ago. I chew the hell out of some gum. I've noticed that I snack more which I'm trying to curb.
 
Yeah it happens part of it is mental with your mouth looking for something to do and part is nicotine has appetite suppression effects. I snacked on almonds quite a bit.
 
Is everyone still holding strong? I'm hanging in there. I feel awesome.
 
I wish it was that easy.. I quit 2 months ago for a month, then I got injured, n started again.. Now that I have no schedule in my life I smoke more than ever..I hope to kick the damn habit again once I recover n get busy again.. My trainer has been on my a$$ to quit for a year now... Some good motivation up in here ... Good for all of u that have quit...

You have to quit come on cigarettes are worse for your health than anything you can possibly imagine. You'll be amazed at how amazing you feel once you quit. I know because I smoked for ten years and have been tobacco free for over 6 years

6 years... Good for u.. I guess now would b a good time to quit , since I'm off work n not training.. I'm gonna give it a shot ...tomorrow is a new day :)
 
Easier said then done but believe me cold turkey is the best way to do it. There are studies that suggest cutting back on cigarettes or weaning off does not work. Oh and I quit cigarettes when I was 22 I started at 12 lol

^^^Thats exactly how I quit. I blew threw some cartridges the first few weeks but vaped inside to break the habit of "going out for a smoke" after that it just got to the point where I questioned its usefulness and finally just threw it away. Now the smell of cigs makes me sick. I still do like a cigar once in a while 2 maybe three times a year when I go fishing or am playing cards and drinking scotch with the boys.
 
I have a good feeling about this... Kinda want the day to end though, just so I can say I made it through today without getting grouchy, ha ha..

Google mouth or throat cancer pics....worked for me almost 3.5 years ago now...the first two weeks are the worst ...make it thru them and y'all b stylin!!

Ha, I work in the medical field, I c it in real life , everyday.. But I'm determined to quit this time!! I'm edgy , puffing the life outta my electronic cig!!! Day is almost done:)

Keep at it. :) You can say some pretty mean stuff to people as long as you follow it up by saying sorry I am trying to quit smoking and I am a little on edge. I used that for like a month lol!

Well, you aren't getting the carcinogens from the e cig, but you are still getting the nicotine, which is bad for your heart and blood vessels. And then that becomes it's own addiction. Most people that use e cigs take in entirely too much nicotine, more than when they smoked. Working in the healthcare field, you should know that they aren't that much better.

By the way, I still dip Copenhagen. I quit about 6 times, and I am working on it again.

I had someone tell me that smoking was a sign of weakness. That was all it took. Once I had that perspective, I was pissed. Every time I craved, I would say "I am stronger than cigarettes." I wasn't going to be defeated. Best of luck bro. You can do anything filtered through the proper perspective.
