An Omaha company is under watch by the FDA. WOWT 6 News also put this company's products to the test.

"I think I made my first purchase back in October of 2012," said Matt Sullivan.

That's when Sullivan began investing in protein powders to enhance his workouts.

"I'd say in the course of two years, I'd spend maybe $3,000," said Sullivan.

Sullivan says he was working out hard but wasn't getting the results he expected.

"That's when I started the whole process of getting it tested on my own," said Sullivan.

He took his protein powder to Midwest Laboratories in Omaha in May of 2014. The results did not match what was on the label.

"I think my jaw hit the floor. I thought, there's no way. There's no way," said Sullivan.

Midwest Laboratories found the Cake Batter protein had only 19% of the protein promised or 5 grams instead of the 24 listed on the label.
 
That's insane.

Being 20 instead of 24 is a big enough deal, but 5g of protein....guess he actually would've been better off with Shakeology or Body By Vi in this case lol.
 
People bitch and moan about the FDA all the time, looks like they are doing good for the consumer in this case. Also Amp Citrate was found in one of the protein powders?. Or was that a different product?.

They're not always wrong...but more often than not, they are lol.

It's kind of like your friend who occasionally comes over to a party and brings a snack, but at 9 out of 10 parties not only does he not, he also breaks your lamp and lets your dog out.

Right, but I watched the video you linked and it said AMP was found in one of the products by New Dawn Nutrition.

It sounds like the FDA hasn't really done much? He got it tested on his own and I would assume most of the rest is left to the courts?

The FDA is a great idea, and you're right, you can't win with some people, but it was never there to protect anyone. It was actually created by the beef companies so that they could sell beef after they killed a bunch of people with rotten canned beef back in the day. They petitioned Roosevelt to create a watch dog (which wasn't originally called the FDA) so that Europeans would think the problem was solved and start buying beef again. It's always been political, and that's the real issue.
 
Great to see the FDA doing it's job. These greedy supplement companies need to own up if they aren't selling what they claim to be selling.

Funny that so many people said "but the protein's cheap!!! who cares??" in my other protein thread. I don't know about everyone, but I want to know that what I'm buying is actually what I'm intending to buy, and put in my body. I also don't like being ripped off nor do I like dishonest people, as I'm sure nobody does.

They are only wrong when it comes to popular forum brands. Any other time they are believed 100%
 
It's not necessarily the supplement company itself but the lab they employ to make their stuff. Either way it's scary!
 
I wonder how much it cost to get a lab to test a product..... I have no idea if this is even within ballpark, but lets say it cost $500 to get tested. I would donate $20 + find 24 more people to donate $20 and send it off. I would hope most people that are serious would be more than willing to donate $20 to determine if it meets label.

Gosh, I wonder how many other companies are doing this shady practice.....maybe I don't want to know the answer because the truth may hurt.

For a valid test about 200-300 PER amino acid- so protein can be very expensive

Interestingly expensive...ouch, but doable if someone gets a gofundme campaign going. Everyone that donates gets a copy of results and money goes back if goal isn't met or something like that. I assume folks that are serious would jump all over this, but I've been wrong more than right.

There's a thread in the Supplement forum about protein, do a search for "worst protein supplement award goes out to..". Someone posted up a website in that thread which lists brands that do not meet label claims. A lot of research has already been done on several brands out there. I like your thinking though. More people need to get together and do this. Even (at a stretch) if it's the factory/source that's at fault, these companies need to know what they are selling.

I agree. This needs to stop. I mean, taking your money, promising 20+ grams of protein and delivering 5 is a serious crime, that's what it is. Let's be real.
 
this is nothing new, id be willing to say a vast majority of supps and protein powders dont meet label claims. Its why ive cut back and stick to a few reputable brands now, like pes, sns, olympus labs and a few others in this world you basically get what you pay for and if you try to get away cheap you usually just end up costing yourself more.

A simple google search on Taurine/Glycine Spiking helps solve a lot of answers.

Well, at least it was not spiked with melamine! I'm sure you all remember the Chinese milk scandal a few years back. Actually killed some kids and many with severe kidney issues. All in an effort to make more money. Spiking with melamine masked the fact they where diluting the milk which then got processed into a powder for formula, food, etc. scary stuff...

Yup I remember it even ended up in dog food, killing a lot of dogs. Pretty ****ty people out there.

Depends on the company. Most don't lose money but they make very little but it's a highly repeatable purchase so you make it on volume.

Only those companies who can really push a lot of product. Many companies that dont sell much are really just losing money. You need to look at the big dogs who can run big sales to actually make a small margin
 
The big dogs make plenty on volume alone. Smaller companies don't even touch it until they are able to push it on a large enough scale to at least break even. The only ones that will consistently lose money are retailers who use as a loss leader.

There is a new dawn store up the street from my house (I live in a suberb of Omaha called papillion) and they are incredibly sketch. They were selling designer steroids to the kids in my highschool for a long time. Even after the superdrol ban Brandon was cooking up that stuff out of his basement and selling it under his house brand. He sold a bunch of illegal products. I've taken one sample of a preworkout I got from them awhile back, ares black. Supposedly around 300mg of caffeine and an undisclosed amount of dmaa. I've never felt so sick in my life. It was awful. Way more in it than the label stated. It was just uncomfortable. I'm glad to see the fda come down on those douchenozzles. All the kids at my highschool have been riding his jock for a few years now since he opened the second store by the school. Thank god this is finally happening.
