Ez-bar vs. Straight bar?

Are their disadvantages to using one over the other for curls?

None, I rotate both in and out. The straight bar can be rough on wrist joints though. I do find that the EZ bar brings the Brachialis m into the lift more though.

Just looking for good variations in my routine. How about grip size? Are variations mainly to aid in grip strength?

I've always found the straight bar best for overall bulk. I really think of EZ bar curls as more of a concentration exercise, depending on what grip you're using. Wide grip seems to target more of the entire bicep, where as narrow grip is more of a concentration curl for working on your bicep peak.

Long story short, if it's overall mass you are going for, I think there is no better exercise than straight bar curls.

Grip size meaning bar diameter? If so than yes.

I agree with you about the straight bar for sheer size. But I think the EZ with the supination fills in the brahialis area better. So both need to be rotated.

I agree. I also agree with AZMIDLYF that grip size on the bar does matter too.

Barbell for mass. EZ curl for muscularity. Straight bar for density/volume.

I got heavy with the barbell, the EZ curl concentrates on separation and eccentric motion, and the straight bar is for sarcoplasmic growth with higher volume sets. Rotate em! I have a real bad left hand grip. I also like reverse grip EZ's.

Read this, it has some good info:

There's a couple of variations in there I was unaware of. Thanks. I'll be taking advantage of this info.

I used to love the really big diameter bars they had at the place I used to go to... added a whole other dimension to the movement.

I'm looking into some fat bars myself.

I never tried em but im curious
