Hey guys, I want to try training in the early am, since I'm usually too beat after work. Do I need something in my stomach, or can I just drink some whey with some BCAA's? Full breakfast afterward? Any advice?
Thanks.

Here's what I do:

Greek yogurt, pureed mixed berries/fruit, oats (you can substitute oats with chia, flax, or coconut if you are doing a low CHO diet). Mix it all together, eat with a cup of coffee. Go train in a half hour.

This is what I do

230 grams pasteurized egg whites
Either 1 cup cottage cheese or Greek yogurt
1 large banana
1 cup oatmeal
3 strawberries
30 grams whey

Blend that bad boy up and hit the gym!

Thanks, guys, appreciate the responses. I've been reading about chia lately, so maybe now's the time to check it out.

Just get 15-20 grams of protein and some carbs in ya and go train. If its easier having a shake, have one. If its easier for you to have a cpl eggs and some oatmeal, have that.

Don't over think it bro. Get some protein and carbs in ya, train, eat a reg meal within an hour or so after you train. If it takes ya 2 hrs to eat after you train, don't panic... Just TRY and get a meal in within an hr or so.

Peace

I agree. I grab a protein shake and a cup of coffee. Drink a shake right after then eat eggs about an hour after I train.

There is zero reason to do cardio fasted. It's a myth. I am glad you lost so much fat but its just math bro... If your cals were the same for the day and your cardio was the same.... You would have lost the same (or more) fat by doing your cardio in a non fasted state.

I agree with Dunhill. Training fasted should just be a personal preference. I train at 4am so I always train fasted.. It's what I prefer. Some people love it some hate it. In the end depending on goals it's all about calories.

It is personal preference. Not sure of your goals, but if your trying to get shredded really fast it is a faster way to lose weight and muscle. Think about it, you have nothing in your stomach therefore it will use your muscles that are made of proteins as a main energy source. Simple science bro.

incorrect... training fasted will NOT cause you to "use up your muscles"

i dont kno where you people read this sh*t

look up kabuki.... and his log, ask him about training fasted..... he does it... and hes 240ish with a 1000lb squat 700lb bench and 800lb dead/.

train fasted, or full... isnt going to make a difference... at the end of the day, its cals in vs cals out (and food choices)

you can eat 8 tiny meals a day or 1 giant meal..... my instincts tell me we should only be eating max 3 times a day(along with science)

Yes, eat before you hit the weights. This past summer I was training right when I woke up and not eatting before. I had significant strength loss across the board. Switched to having a small meal after few weeks and I began to normalize and increase again.

Lets be a little more exact here. There is some protein (muscle) breakdown during exercise, be it resistance training, aerobic or anaerobic. During the recover period protein synthesis occurs. The balance of the two determines whether you gain, maintain or lose.

Now, depending on what type of work you are doing, training fasted could lead to extra protein break down during exercise. If you are training at low intensities, such as walking or a light jog, than there will not likely be much of a difference. If, however, you are training at higher intensities then there will be a greater glucocorticoid release and possibly a greater protein catabolism. Is it likely to make a big difference in the grand scheme of things..... I don't know.

train fasted, or full... isnt going to make a difference... at the end of the day, its cals in vs cals out (and food choices)
This is fairly inaccurate. Whether your goal is gains in size and strength, or a decrease in body fat, training fasted compromises results. Work output lower when training fasted. We see this whether it is resistance training or anaerobic training. A lower work output results in a lower stimulus for adaptation.

Is fasted training going to result in less weight if you are doing a few sets of singles - not likely. Is training fasted going to harm results from AM walking - not likely. Is training fasted going to result in a lower work output when doing multiple sets and higher volume - absolutely. Is training fasted going to result in a lower caloric expenditure during HIIT or > low intensity cardio - yes.

I think then, we can look at the synergistic effects of increased protein degradation and lower work output during fasted training as compromising optimal performance and adaptation.

I'd be interested in seeming some scientific evidence that says we should only eat 3 times a day.

Did the am workout today. Had Greek yogurt with some blueberries 30 mins beforehand, along with coffee, Xtend and 4 caps of creatine nitrate. Energy good as well as workout. Took ON's hydrobuilder when I finished. Hour later had 8 eggs (six of them whites), plus two pieces whole grain toast with honey. Felt right and pretty good, but let me know if I should include anything else. Thanks for all the advice and replies, guys. Gonna try to keep the morning routine going.

Fasted training has worked well for me.

Only been lifting for 12 months, don't think I'm burning too much muscle in the am.

No loss in strength or mass. I do take raw creapure and bcaa with water before I train.

You weren't even talking to me but... Ethics? You own a dictionary bro. Wt loss IS cals in and cals out. It IS that simple first of all. Second umm... I personally eat 2-3 meals a day and a snack or 2... I take in 150 grams of protein a day give or take. Go ahead.... Comment on my result and how small I am...lol....

You are dismissing his comment about 3 meals a day... Do you know the science? Have you seen studies? Research? How about YOU post any science showing 6 meals to be better than 3! YOU have a problem with the concept so post up some research, some studies..... I can post some info up for you on less frequent eating (3 meals a day) or you can look at some of layne nortons stuff. You won't cause you can get your "bro science" on line and in the rags. Keep it up.

I have trained in the early morning for over two decades and I always do it fasted.

I mean - there was one time when I TRIED some food beforehand - didn't really do much for me - so I went back to fasted.

I get up at 0330 M-F ...

1. Drink a cup of coffee (a big cup)
2. Surf the internet news
3. About 30 minutes before I leave the house for the gym - I do a serving of Hypervol, a serving of M.R.I. Blackpowder (or Assault), 25 mgs of Ephedrine HCL, and 200 mg's of Caffeine.

Then I hit the gym at 0500 and prolly train until 0645-0650 ... so about an hour and 45 minutes - but at least 30 minutes of that is Abs.

i would rec something solid along with the protein drink. like 1 banana or a begal, along with 25-50g protein powder in water.
it will help keep you from going too catabolic and also help with energy.

Ok, let me dumb this down for you as simple as possible. ETHICS, A system of principals or morals. In this case im referrring to Bodybuilding. When one trains, one must follow a strict set of PRINCIPALS in order to attain success. Second, everybodys different on their eatin habbits and it take trial and error to see what best suits a person. I was simply saying 3 meals is unrealistic. I eat every 2-3 hours and im up at 6 and in bed by 10. Breakfast is my biggest meal and i progressivly eat smaller meals and the day dwindles down. I dont have studies to show you. I go by results and what may work for me may not work for you. I dont give two ****s how big you are. Bodybuilding is a marathon not a sprint.

My god... You don't even understand the context of the use of the word principals in ref to ethics. You didn't understand a word (ethics) and used in incorrectly... Not the end of the world but to defend your use of the word is funny.
Anyway, YOU make statements insulting people and their statements that are in fact based on research and science.... You don't seem to care about either. You make statements and are unable to defend those statements. Why insult others when your personal comprehension skills are so limited?

You make comments about other members size cause you seem to believe that has some relevance in regards to whether a statement made by that person is true or false. But when I ask you to comment on my size or strength.... You don't care..... I thought that had some validity in your twisted "logic"? You make the idiotic statement that its "a marathon not a sprint"...lol... You know my age bro? Lol.

Keep your bro science man.... I'll trust real science, real studies..... Real results. The results I get, my training partners have gotten, my trainees have gotten.

I can describe you to a "T'' without ever meeting you. You train 6 days a week, you take 5 supps a day minimum, you read flex magazine, you have a faux hawk, you "live to train", you write everything down and try every "beat new" supplement and routine that comes out.... You are about 5'6" but swear your 5"9" and you top out at a buck seventy.

I'm done.

Oh yea... You have 7 affliction shirts and about a dozen tapout shirts but you don't wear the tapout ones anymore.... And you took 3 jujitsu classes and think your a bad ass mma "athlete".

But take care man.

So if someone makes an incorrect statement, insults others, backs up nothing they say, gives advice when they are unqualified to do so (based on their own admission in other threads).... They should not be called out on it? I find misinformation to be downright dangerous at times. I find trolling to be offensive.

This is to all the advanced lifters who enjoy putting down all the rookies- why do the rookies have better builds than most ( not all ) advanced lifters. Just saying... From a shredded rookie of course. Never once have I given anyone negative feedback in this forum. Expecting the same respects in return.

idk... i eat 3 times a day, train fasted.... and i would say i have a pretty decent physique ...

i also train fasted... small?? idk... your 57 170lbs? lol... wheres your pics at ?

yes... i did post a picture of myself... to prove that wether you lift fasted or not, you can have good results.... bottom line is, dont worry/get anxious about what supplements/diet/how you sleep eat whatnot ..... just eat sleep lift and youll grow...

the anxiety and questioning is likely to make you lose more muscle mass than training fasted lol

id be interested in seeing the contrary.... im sure we could both find significant evidence supporting both sides, and dis-proving both as well..

i say, try everyhting, whatever works, stick with it, do what you enjoy and what works for you....u have to experiment. Bottom line we are not professional bodybuilders, jsut trying to stay healthy and improve our physiques so don't stress too much over it, if u start seeing the results u want, and you feel good, do that, if not , try something else until you fins what works for you and always remember everythign takes time!

I hate the word "meals". Really leads to a bunch of semantic arguing.

Leds talk feedings. I don't see any reason to split your entire caloric consumption into 6 equal feedings.

However, there istheory and application that more than 3 feedings is best for optimal performance.

ANd, as Rodja pointed out in another thread, we should probably distinguish between simple aesthetics and performance.

Surely there must be some science showing an increase in muscle mass, an increase in performance, a decrease IM body fat, etc... Rt? I mean studies showing real PROOF that say 6 "feedings" increases performance, muscle mass, etc.. would be the holy grail for sup companys rt? So there should be a ton of scientific evidence showing more feedings to be more effective for muscle gains, fat loss, strength, performance, etc... I just have never seen any. But if people knew they didn't have to eat every 2 hrs and don't need 2-3 grams of protein per lb .... What would happen to all the protein powder being sold?
