Donald Trump running for president

for those of you interested in 'studies'....testing giant ACT suggests that only 26 percent of high school seniors who expressed an interest in stem fields are academically ready for tough first-year stem classes in college.

Standardized tests and surveys like that are beyond flawed. High school seniors are morons (I was one) and think they want to be scientists because they enjoy watching the Discovery channel and then either change majors because they find out it's not easy or they make it through to a degree to land a boring job for crap pay and are upset it's not the exciting job that tv and movies made it seem.

Also related, I was so hung over during my ACT that I threw up during both breaks and made it into and through undergrad and grad school. So yeah, those tests don't work lol.

I'm very debt/risk averse. I'm all about living in my means and not having the nicest phone/car. Though, I do splurge on brown/tan shoes.

newsflash...that doesn't make you special.

at the risk of massaging your ego, it could be that you are somewhat exceptional academically???

No, you offer free college to STEM students. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. If they drop out or flunk out, then they lose eligibility for free funding. You don't have to make a 4.0 to be successful in any field.

It’s not free, it never can be. You have to take money from other people against their will to pay for others to succeed. That ain’t right.

Haha, I wasn’t talking about you, more of a hypothetical “you.” That we could reallocate wasteful government spending, or we could just cut it out entirely and work on reducing the debt.

That's what taxes are though. Taking money from other people to pay for others to have things. Whether it's healthcare, education, a nuclear war head, or a road in Montana lol. I guess that's a whole different can of worms though

A good way to start would be to get rid of the whole "if you don't spend it you lose it" policy for federal agencies.

For sure. I’ve seen some of that policy, and it makes no sense. It literally just leads to “well, we have some money leftover, so let’s just add this completely unnecessary thing.”

Are you ok with paying more taxes to pay for others to go to college? Wouldn’t it be nice if you can pick your own charity rather than government telling you how to best spend it such as $4,000 hammers for the military (point being government is corrupt and we pay more than we get.)

But yeah we need good reform to help people access better education, costs are ridiculous college is like a giant corporation.

Yes, I am okay with that, but I don't really think it would result in higher taxes. Surely, if we can afford a $1T corporate/top 1% tax break with no cuts from spending or anything else we can afford public education.

I don't agree with the military contracting everything out at ridiculous rates. Government spending is out of control and asinine. I don't think anyone can argue with that.

Yep. Should incentivize smart spending instead of encouraging wasteful spending.

I would cut the Military budget myself by 75% and end the global empire and military industrial complex. My motto’s would be America first and make America great again. Wait where did I hear that before?

Ax1 for Pres! Youd released so many classified docs too! But you'd probably get assassinated first

So do current or recently graduated STEM majors get amnesty/forgiveness on their loans (not have to pay them back)?

Also, if literally anyone with a high school diploma can get free STEM at universities, do you not worry that it will lead to some people saying “screw it, it’s free,” and then dropping out once they realize it’s a good bit of work and not easy? Do the taxpayers just eat 1-3 semesters of free classes for everyone who drops out?

Also, does this cover pre-requisites? There are at least several courses that all students need to take freshman year; if anything for a STEM major is free, everyone should just start as a STEM major, get freshman year for free, then switch to whatever major they actually planned on.

Perhaps you would have to repay the “free” courses if you drop out before a certain point in your education to discourage abuse? Sounds sort of harsh, but it’s still “cheaper,” or at least no more expensive, than it currently is, where you ALWAYs have to pay for every course you take. You wouldn’t be paying extra, just what you normally would.
Just because it is offered does not mean everyone qualifies, there would still be requirements. Just like offering a job, you screen candidates instead of hiring based on first come first serve.

So scholarships basically lol? I do agree that making it increasingly harder to get the Bright Futures Scholarship in Florida is sort of silly, but even its prior states, you still had to be a very solid student (GPA, SAT, etc) to get it. Only people who clearly demonstrated in high school (as far as is possible, as nothing is guaranteed) the ability to succeed in college/university earned it. Something like that seems logical and beneficial enough on a national level, but not just “you graduated high school, here’s a free ride through college.”

But of you cut military spending how will all of your supporters get rich? You'll get impeached or 'sassinated

On both sides of the political spectrum really, and for more than just military spending, although for that is a particularly large example for sure. One reason why the government wants its hands in everything is because the middleman always gets his cut.

generally speaking the government provides 'free' tuition for grades k-12, and is controlled by the dept of education. wouldn't it be wonderful if colleges were to become government controlled?

state sponsored curriculum, oh boy......

I didn't read all the responses because I'm at work and trying to handle 6 things at once.

Anyway, spending $600 billion a year on the defense budget makes little sense when we don't invest in the future of that military budget. We sell military technology. However, we do not sell our current, best, most badass military technology. We sell the meh stuff. If our country continues on the path it's on, with education costs continuing to skyrocket, we are going to lose our edge. We won't be selling meh stuff we will be buying it.

The government will generate more revenue this way because these individuals will generally be higher income earners. Also, they'll be able to contribute more to the economy once they graduate. I have a $1600 student loan payment (I'm not in STEM so I'm not arguing this for me). That's $1600 a month I can't use to stimulate the economy. I graduated with ~300 kids and about half have as much student loans as I. That's $240,000 a month not being pumped into the economy. From one school. For ten years.

I wouldn't make it retroactive, though. And if you drop out before completing your degree, you'd have to pay that back. Granted, not at the current, highly inflated, everyone can go to college because the government funds student loans.

IMO, no one goes into STEM because they've been fed propaganda. They go into political science, philosophy, art history, or some other meaningless degree.

I agree with trade schools. Generally speaking, a trade school is significantly cheaper than a 4-year degree, which is why they weren't a focal point.

I would rather spend $18B on education and bettering the future generations instead of a wall that's not going to solve the alleged issue.

You realize tuition rates being so high is related to the Federal Government being in the student loan business. When the fed backs student loans, schools charge what they want because they know uncle Sam will pay them . Even if the student can't. How is a direct subsidy going to lower tuition costs?

#$%$#%$@##$% I hate when I have to agree with you

in 1980 my ship had a scheduled port/liberty call in Mombasa kenya....prior to the liberty we had to get 3 sets of immunization shots and take quinine pills for a week. this was the only country of the many countries I visited while in the navy that we had to do this.

I've never been to Haiti, but I won't be planning any vacations there any time soon.

Haiti has been a impoverished nation as far back as I can remember, natural disasters have only added to that nations problems...

I've heard stories about how the Clinton foundation treated the Haitian's.

man, being in the navy we got way more vaccinations and immune shots than the general population, but those shots and the quinine were specific to Mombasa kenya.

The quinine was just for malaria. That would have been required nearly everywhere near the equator and in the southern hemisphere.

Name some countries that what? Have malaria problems now and in 1980?!?! Are you really taking that stand that only Kenya had malaria?!?! What is it that you are arguing here?

nope...only that it wouldn't be on my list of vacation spots.

if I were a immigrant I would kill to work there....imagine the tips those fatcat 'guilty' white guys give!!!

Off the books too, cap that off with welfare, medicaid and foodstamps = set4life!

Honestly I don't understand what the Republicans are getting from embracing Trump because it looks like there is a growing split there. Maybe I'm missing something, but come election time that means split and confused voters, making it easier for Democrats, no?

the only thing republicans have going for them is a booming economy.....but who cares about money, right?

Not sure how that relates, but ok lol

lesson learned...'it's the economy stupid'. the dem's missed the boat on tax cuts, imo.... saying that 2 dollar an hour raises and thousand dollar bonuses are just crumbs will come back to bite them.

people might hate trump, but smart people don't bite the hand that feeds them, lol.

Well this is a different conversation about basic math. I was talking about having two teams and one of those teams has infighting. The other team doesn't have to do very much to win the game. You already had traditional Republicans and these new Trump Republicans. Now even among the Trump Republicans, you have another split occuring with the alt-right Bannon followers. I won't be shocked when Democrats manage to mess this opportunity up, but it should still concern Republicans.

As for the tax cuts and bonuses thing, that's smoke and mirrors. I honestly hope these tax cuts are true tax cuts and are sustainable, but I'm not getting my hopes up because I've seen this before. A couple of extra hundred dollars back into my pocket doesn't really do me much good if they're screwing me somewhere else for thousands of dollars. Read Trump's Art of the Deal book and you'll see exactly where all of this is coming from. Walmart just gave out a bunch of raises and then closed a bunch of stores. Trump makes a big annoucnement how he's donating his salary to a program that he cut a huge amount of funding for (much bigger than his paycheck). It's the same pattern over and over. Again, I hope the economy does well, but saying it is doing well right now isn't completely true and a year in is too early to start singing praises.

They all the same, the split Repubs, unified dems, all their policies are almost the same and they are all shytholes.

I say vote Vermin Supreme for 2020!!! There will be a free pony in it for you and all, far better than a Obamaphone.

So DHS sec testifies Trump didn't say ****hole, and says there were multiple people in the meeting using profanity. And Dick Durbin has been caught lying in the past about something that was said in a closed White House meeting with Obama.
