Donald Trump running for president

No idea who makes this corruption perception index, but proud to say NZ ranks at #4. China pretty far down that list

Couple that with higher personal freedom that the US - I'd say NZ looks pretty darn good all round. Used before, but still :D

Any need for Medical and Urban Anthropologists? ;)

They were the epitome of Vietnam activism. Free speech is still there, but it depends on which view you have. They're obviously mostly liberal, so if a douchebag like Milo comes to speak, of course they are going to protest. And now Ann Coulter is trying to speak there. Those people know there will be push back so they organize a talk simply for the free press.

'ONE' of the reasons colleges such as berkeley were the epitome of anti-vietnam activism is because they used college deferment to get out of going to Vietnam..

in the end they were right, it was a bad war...but they had selfish motives for their actions.....ever hear the saying i aint no fortunate son--It comes from rich kids sitting the war out on college campuses while poor kids went off to fight and die!!!

Problems in college are largely due to crazy ass professors like this.

problems in collage today is because those draft dodgers from the Vietnam war went on to become college professors!!!

Looks like we need to have kinetic action on China for all their abuses....maybe we can ask porky over there in DPRK to get on with completing the nukes that the Clintons gifted them and then use that as leverage to tell china to stop killing people!

hey ax1...doesn't it look like fat boy stole chairman mao's wardrobe, lol.

Mao was a war time warrior at least....porky was born with a platinum spoon in his mouth.

I wonder how the world would have looked if Mao's son didn't die in the Korean War.

Lol, not all professors are the same.

While I don't agree with everything she is quoted on in that article, I do agree with the basic sentiment that the laws of this nation were not predicated on accounting for African slaves. Heck, they weren't made for women either.

Have we made progress since then? Yes.

You are broadbrushing post-secondary education. You seem to really dislike educational institutions. Is there a reason?

I never had a professor say anything like that in any of my classes.

I agree that the pendulum was too far to the right, but if you swing it too far to the left as compensation is that really a solution? or retribution?

First I never said all professors are like this, but there are plenty that keep getting themselves in the news for this type crap.

Secondly, are laws don't need to account foe slaves since slavery was abolished over 100 years ago. Our current laws are much different than the original Consitution, which has been amended many times to grant the equal rights to blacks.

You probably didn't have professors 20 years ago teaching crap like this. You didn't have safe spaces on campus. Free speach meant free speach. The college atmosphere is much different now than it was 20 years ago.

I never said anything of the like.

I was referring to the repeated attacks and denigration that youngandfree seems to perpetually hurl at higher education.

I was wondering why such a deep seated anger at "college"?

sorry, I never meant you said that....I was referring to the direction this country seems set on to make white males irrelevant. sometimes I think that is the goal of the democratic party!!!

Considering the only "attacks" I make about higher education are news stories of dumb professors that are creating dumb snowflake students who can't think for themselves and only know the term microaggression. As a 40 year old, I shake my head every time I see something like this. Why would I pay thousands of dollars to send my kid to college and have them be subjected to teachers like that?

if my kids were getting ready to graduate high school I would send them to welding school!!!l

The future is in science and technology, just as it always has been, and always will be. Inventors, materials chemists, bioengineering, any other engineering career, etc ALL nearly always require you to go to college. As Americans, our culture used to strive toward advancing human kind in these fields, now your generation wants everyone to remain idle and stagnant in "the good old days". Sorry guys, the world evolves, things change, the world as a whole always pushes towards progress.

Because maybe they want a future in a job that won't be automated in the future?

Better yet, support academic achievement and maybe they can get a scholarship.

Those "dumb professors" as you say, aren't at every school or in every discipline.

You say you aren't generalizing, yet you don't want to send your kids to college. Seems to me like you are assuming all professors are the exact same.

Lol the modern American culture has nothing to do with science what you call the "idle and stagnant "good old days". " created the modern capitalists which keeps America better off then the rest of the world. The shift from that culture created parasites, cronyism, globalism, and authoritarianism; everything wrong with the US. No it wasn't a perfect era on a social stand point but economically it was better off, socially it never got to evolve.

This isn't evolution, its devolution.

Well who is going to build your housing, or fix your central air or heat when it goes out? How about replace your water heater or busted sewer line? How about wiring up the electricity to the engineering facility? No one that goes to college to become any of these things will be able to. This idea is why there are thousands of skilled labor jobs that go unfilled, because everyone is operating under this premise.

If you learn a skilled trade, you can write your own meal ticket. My sister just ayed a plumber $7100 to dig a trench and replace her **** filled sewer line. A buddy called me yesterday because his water heater WA leaking. I offered to help him do it, letting him know my limits, but offering to help him save money. He opted for a pro plumber to come out and do it on an eening call out. My son in law ran a long screw through his power wire feeding his breaker panel, on a Sunday evening. My daughter called asking if I knew of a good electrician. I gave her a name of a guy. She called 4 electricians. Guess which one got her $600 for a couple hours work. The only one that answered the phone.

So its not longing for the good old days. It's keeping society going. Go ahead and call a biochemist when your AC goes out, see how that goes.

How are those college degrees treating millenials?

Invalid Link Removed
Last year, 80% of millenials said they will be worse off than their parents. It's a good thing they got those high dollar college degrees that they can't pay for.

if you have the aptitude to go to purdue or rose hulman and get a engineering degree go for it....if on the other hand you are like 80% of the population who don't have that kind of aptitude then trade school is a much better choice than a 4 year degree in creative writing.

union pipe welders can easily get over $40 an hour, learn to do underwater welding and you can double that....

I have to go to bed as i have an interview tomorrow and dont feel like sitting up responding to those prior posts. But i will respond to these.

First quote: 100% agree with you. If that is their niche, then have at it and live a fantastic life. I know i will need to call on you at some point, just as you will need to call on me.
Second quote: 100% agree with you.

What I'm trying to say here is that we shouldnt be pushing people (edit: youth) in our society towards these careers. We need to strive to be better, like we used to. We used to be the world leaders in science, engineering, math, technology, etc. Do you think that has anything to do with the fact that we built the most powerful country in the world during that time? I have heard you yourself say that was the prime of our nation. We were LEADERS in several very important aspects of global human civilization. I dont fee that our culture has the same drive or determination to strive for those same things as we once did. That's all im trying to say here.

I have plenty of friends that are union carpenters, welders, and electricians. Do i take what they do for granted or think their jobs are easy? Hell no. I just wish that we as a society wouldn't reinforce our youth in not striving towards things that WILL advance the betterment of mankind.

Im all for science and schooling but since that's been left in the government's hand it's complete bias crap. The realm of science would be beyond what we have if left in the markets hands. Schooling left to the market would be way cheaper plus it would actually create productive members in society. My generation doesn't know how to fend for themselves because public education taught them everything that didn't need or want to know then threw them into the real world assuming they need more schooling. Some get into college with scholarships, most need to pay off debt for the rest of their life, and the rest that didn't go either get good paying jobs or become lost and confused in a world they didn't prepare for.

As a society, we aren't pushing kids to become a skilled tradesman anymore. Trade schools have been put on the back burner for 4 year degrees for years. That link I posted about millenials shows it. Many of those people have 4 year degrees with $50,000+ in college debt, and can't get jobs in their degree fields. All those thousands of millenials went to college to "become better", and the aren't.

If students were being pushed into trades so much, why is the demand going up due to lack of skilled tradesmen?

Then why blame them if you admit it was a bad war? If you had the money to do it, would you still have sent your kids off to die or would you have done anything to protect them?

We will always need skilled tradies. Always. one thing i wish I knew was even an option was getting a trade, but I was never pushed in that direction.

One thing im grateful for is Youtube because ive literally built my 4WD off videos there, and a few ebooks along the way.

Being skilled, or even willing to give something a try can save you thousands. I fix both of my cars, and ultimately spend less over a year than some do on one car per year.

I encourage everyone I meet to give it a try, but also dedicate and hour a day to learning something new. Whether a programming language, about wiring and electricals, how to fix a pipe or a car etc and I assure you, one year from now you'll know a tonne more than you ever thought possible.

So, now it seems Russia is trolling us by flying bombers close to Alaska.

Oh, and now there is an arrest warrant for Julian Assange. I guess he is no longer useful to Trump. Either that or maybe he has some dirt on Trump?

I fix my own cars unless it's something super complicated like a transmission or something. It's a useful skill to have, and it's really a no brainier with YouTube ;)

Dump is always going to represent big monster corrupt government, lets not forget he wanted Snowden assassinated so it should be no surprise his administration would issue a warrant for Assange. Dump was a big fan though during his campaign, what a hypocrite.

Poking at Assange. When has that worked ever lol

I have a good friend who's a mechanic. That said, unless the repair requires a lift (Ford Mustang, Fuel Pump), I got it. If I can tear down a computer and rebuild it, there's not much difference except bigger tools and mess. Maybe some extra parts... :D

We are going to need a large group of next generation mechanics, there are so many opportunities out there when you see the first real life all electric Jetsons flying car successfully run its first test run. I myself see myself alot of college waste, false hopes and promises when people take liberal arts classes or art itself thinking they will have it made after school only to be in major debt for a very long time. We need future tech skills.

Whoever was talking about preparing for the next gen (justhere?) is very dead on.

I had no idea that was funded by money stolen from us, I would make NEA completely obsolete.

It wasn't funded by the NEA, put yourself at ease. There was a program that permitted artists from each state to tell their story on the NEA web site. I don't see a problem with giving some exposure to artists do you? Who else will do that?

By the way:
The $146 million budget of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) represents just
0.012% (about one one-hundredth of one percent) of federal discretionary spending.

With that kinda money we can pay for another 102 tomahawks and blow up North Korean civilians!!!! Yeah Dump get rrrr doneee!!!!!

But who will take the pictures and paint beautiful oil paintings of the victims?

And show the world the babies that were killed by our own compassionate love bombs and military industrial complex? hahah you know how we do! We want people to believe our bombs are anti-genocidal and saves lives, its great for stocks and getting those raises via tax payer when its budget time.

He teaches painting and is a self proclaimed conservative. Lol.

Go back and read that again. The painter is named Chung. A conservative wouldn't cry for days because Trump was elected.

"Paul Berger, a former Anchorage professor and self-described conservative, shared his opinion on the painting."
