Easy to say for someone who believes what most people believe.

Try living in my shoes in the South as an atheist. I have to just smile and nod when people preach to me about Jesus or mention that God will do things for them. Christians, in my experience, tend to automatically assume that others are Christians as well. I personally find that offensive and incredibly close-minded. I feel as if I have to watch what I say or face repercussions. I imagine that is how a lot of people of different faiths feel around outspoken Christians.

I think they're wasted prayers, personally ;) My grandmother and other family members have been praying for me for a LONG time. I've been an atheist for as long as I can remember, and I'm coming up on 42 years old!

Great questions that deserve a long reply. I'll definitely reply later on in the day (swamped at work right now). I've been raised by someone who was almost a Catholic priest, was in the seminary for the full time. I also attended summer bible camp (Protestant bible camp) for most of my youth, and thus I have a very broad religious (Christian) upbringing. I was also very close friends with many Mormons & Born Again Christians, and attended their events from time to time. I've spoken in great detail with and been close with people from all forms of the Christian faith, so I will have a good answer for you.

my friend, I went to a catholic college long before I found GOD.

I am sorry you feel that I am preaching....

I look at it as if I won the lottery when I found GOD and want to share the wealth.

All of my posts in this thread perhaps. It's a political thread, one should expect emotions to run high.

Do you make a habit of of passing judgment on others based on limited information? Now you're saying I'm defensive.

So, in two posts, you have judged me as being upset and defensive, based on context free black and white text on a forum.

And I don't malign you for your beliefs. I have no problem with Christians, as long as they don't attempt to convince me to become one (aka proselytizing).

Your taking it too personal. Ive had people tell me to my face and also talking behind my back that Im going to hell. Its not a big deal, all that matters is that they are nice people end of day.

its called an observation. No one has "passed judgement" upon you. Get over yourself or whatever it is that has you so critically defensive of the minutia. I approve and accept you just as you are.

I have just one more thing to say on this then I have to take care of business....AA and NA are so widely accepted worldwide as recovery groups for addicts and alcoholics that judges even court order people to attend...the programs are based on the same 12 step program, of which the main tenant being turning your life over to a higher power, not necessarily GOD although the vast majority of people do consider GOD to be their higher power.

to sustain recovery from an addiction is very difficult, many have tried and many have failed...to me I see the success of the 12 step programs as a testament to the power of belief in GOD. I am not saying there are not atheists and non-believers who have had success in recovery without GOD as their higher power, but they are truly in the minority....

if anyone doubts the power of turning your life over to GOD, just look at the success of the 12 step programs.

Agreed. As one of the more staunch non-theists on AM for so many years, I never cared about all the times I have been told I am going to hell. My response is usually on of excitement, specifically stating, all the great minds that must be there if the criteria for going is not believing :)

Also, please bear in mind, that my earlier education career was based primarily in study and teaching religious history. So my non-theism, while it does have strong roots with my father, is also based on countless years of study. Specifically ancient history that pre-dates the judo christian world

Here's another great article this PhD "journalist" wrote during or after the Baltimore riots. She proclaims those rioting and looting as "freedom fighters" and proclaims the mother that caught her son participating in the thuggery as "helping racist america". There's no extreme bias coming from her at all.

His vocal support for radical Taliban and saying his islamic view of homosexuality may have been an influence on his mass murdering son. That's a bit richer than him running for president of afghanistan.

I heard some insider stuff about seizures and that she may be suffering from CTE from multiple concussions....they have to protect her from camera flashes and she is a big mess.

Her karma is almost as bad as it gets.

that seizure stuff seems to have validity....I have heard that from several different sources....also heard that bill has severe parkinsons and early stage alzheimers. from what I have been hearing bill is gravely ill....if something were to happen to bill I think it would send her over the cliff-they may not be the perfect couple but bill has always been there to support her and vice versa. Hillary would be a ship without a rudder without bill, imo.
