When I do dead lifts I leave them for the end of my workout. I care more to be fully warmed up, loosen up, focused. This is a dangerous exercise and if I have to take my time then I will and I want to be sure I'm not rushing or being eradic.
Usually I'll go more for volume and pyramid: 2 warm up sets 15-20 (I may even do a couple quick sets of hyperextension also), 2 sets 12-15, 1 set 8-10, drop back down to warm up weight for one more 15-20. I'lll still go to failure but I don't go too heavy. I also have a bad left wrist so I cant grip too much either.
Once in a while, and I mean a long while, I'll go real heavy building up to the 1RM.
