Bulking w/ P90X

A friend of mine bought the P90X series a few weeks back but was recently in a car accident that left him with a few broken bones and about 4 months before a full recovery. Needless to say, he won't be doing P90X for awhile.

When I first joined here a few months ago, I was a really skinny runt. But since then I have been on a bulking diet consisting of roughly 6500-7000 calories (pretty clean too). I've put on some nice weight since (about 12 pounds) with this diet and some basic weight training 3 days a week.

He has these DVDs and told me I would be welcome to do the program so I said I would try it. I've only done 3 of the workouts so far and not in any order. I did the chest and back, legs and back, and ab ripper x just to test the waters on this program. Wow, this stuff kicks your ass unlike anything I have ever experienced. I had to stop the DVD 7 times during the chest and back so I could catch up. The ab ripper DVD is virtually impossible for me but I struggle through it. I definitely feel I get an awesome workout.

Has anyone actually tried bulking while doing P90X? I still want to gain about 20-25 pounds by the end of the year and get to that 150lb range (I'm 133 right now). My diet is very high in calories and protein and I use Serious Mass as my pre and post workout drink. I have these $90 DVDs and feel like they are just being wasted. I have the space, equipment, and time in the evening to do it. I'd also focus on high weight/low rep.

Thoughts?

i've been wondering the same thing, going to be starting it in may

i'm going to be using jack3d as a pre workout and continue with my diet and hight protein/carb intake

It is a very intense routine, tho im not sure it would be great for a bulk, but i suppose you could supplement in heavier weights and some compound lifts at the gym, and it may make for a good lean-bulker.

You can bulk with P90X. The diet manual tells you to adjust your daily caloric intake to meet your needs. Also, during the workouts they tell you to adjust your weight and reps depending on your goals.

All that said, the general use of P90X is to lose weight and get ripped.

There you have it!! Add in some more :burger::donut: and your on a bulk!

Yeah, my diet is pretty good for bulking. I'm taking in roughly 6000 calories a day and 275 grams of protein, which is probably a bit excessive for someone of my size. I drink a lot of my calories making it easier. I love P90X so far, it's so intense and I feel I get a much better workout than what I was getting at the gym. Thanks guys.

6,000 Calories and only 275 grams of protein? That is a weak diet, you can easily get 300-350 grams of protein with about 3500 calories. Mind if i see your diet?

u might want to lower ur cals a bit, ur consuming too much for ur weight, ur body cant process it all, meaning it goes to waste and fat (IMO) lol

also 275g of protein is colid for his weight its a tad bit over 2g per lb

Im just wondering about his diet. He is definately over eating, and it may be poor calories if he is only getting those grams of protein at that high.

Example:
A diet like this can yield about 3300-3600 calories, 350-360 g protein, 400g carbs, and 97g of fat.
Breakfast 1
1 scoop Whey Protein
2 Slices Wheat Bread
2 Tbsp. jelly

Breakfast 2
3 Whole eggs + 3 white eggs
2 cups oatmeal

Late-Morning Snack
2 scoops casein protein or cottage cheese
2 slices whole wheat bread
1 tbsp. jelly
1 tbsp. peanut butter

Lunch-
6 oz deli turkey/ Chicken Breast
2 slices whole wheat bread
1 tbsp. mustard
2 cups mixed greed salad
½ avocado
1 tbsp. olive oil/vinegar dressing

Preworkout
1 scoop whey protein
1 large apple

Postworkout
2 scoops whey protein
Bcaa
Skim milk 12 oz

Dinner
6-8 oz Chicken Breast
1 large sweet potato
1 cup chopped broccoli
2 cups mixed green salad
1 tbsp. olive oil/vinegar dressing

Nighttime Snack
2 Scoops Casein protein Or some cottage cheese, fat free
1 cup oatmeal
1 oz. Walnuts (14 halves)
5-10 g BCAAs

Bulking with P90x is not optimal. Like Silver said, its main goal is to get leaner and maybe add a bit of muscle mass. Optimizing mass means training for mass. You don't get better at sprinting by riding a bicycle.

My calories are so high because I use ON Serious Mass instead of a regular Whey Protein. I don't do the full serving however. I have one scoop in the mid morning (625 cals, 25g protein) and 1/2 scoop before and after workout (625 cals, 25g total). That's an extra 1250 calories that I get not counting the 3 cups of whole milk, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, and one banana that I throw in there with it. Yesterday I took in 285g of protein because I had one more serving of peanut butter and I started eating 1.3% cottage cheese before bed. I'm eating slightly over 2g per 1lb of body weight right now. I think that's more than sufficient. Too much protein can be bad, or at least that's what my doctor has told me.

As far as bulking with P90x goes, I'm pretty sure I have tailored the program to fit those needs. When doing the strength training days, I always pause the DVD and do 3 sets of 8 reps with as much weight as I can handle (I can barely get the 8th rep up). I rest for 3 min between sets as well (not sure if that is too much or too little). I also skip a lot of the moves that I don't find beneficial. Also, on cardio days, I only do half the workout to avoid burning too many calories.

But if enough of you think I should stop, I will. I don't want to waste my time.

If youve tailored it, then why are you asking us if its alright?

Just wondering. Seems like you are a little insecure, yet say youve got everything figured out.

Well, from my point of view I do have it figured out. BUT, I still ask because I could potentially not have it figured out. You guys know one hell of a lot more than I do about strength training. I like to get differentiating opinions.

Insecure isn't the right word. Inquisitive is the better choice.

It doesn't matter. I'm going to do it at this point. Hopefully I can prove that it can work for bulking and then there will be no doubt.

Not to discredit anyone on this forum because there are very knowledgeble people here, but I think your P90X questions are best answered by those registered on the Beach Body web site using P90X for bulking - you'll get advice from active P90X users. In fact, you may find a challenge group there focused 100% on building muscle.

I have the P90X set. My initial comment is based on what I've noticed by using it, however I have not completed the program. When I first got it about a year and 1/2 ago, I used it verbatim for about 6 weeks and amazingly my muscles were bulging yet I was losing fat - I even got comments at work. It was the most interesting recomp I've ever experienced.

My friend and workout partner is out of commission for 2 - 3 weeks; I may do the entire first phase of P90X during this time while he recovers since he can't lift.

I just did a search on the Beach Body message boards and there are plenty of threads from P90X users interested in and actively bulking; lots of threads with before and after pictures, good information there.
