Decided to go to the beach today! EVERYONE WAS AT THE BEACH.... There were NO parking and huge crowds with no masks. After 7 different beaches with no luck, we just went home. And the casinos are open!!!!! Why can’t the gyms be open, too?!?
What state is this?

Profile says CA.
Yea, CA. The Bay Area. BLM everywhere, people laying around Presidio in big crowds with no masks. Half moon bay, nooooo masks. I guess it was a good thing we didn’t even get a chance to step out of the car.

IMO, we could have taken greater advantage of the summer months in working toward herd immunity and not being overly focused on keeping new infections low (relatively speaking).

Despite cases being on the increase- the severity of symptoms, hospitalizations, and people requiring mechanical ventilation has been quite low. Hospitals have not been overwhelmed with China virus patients, and this is likely why..

As many have predicted-including myself, we are going to be in for a rude awakening this fall and through the winter months when the virus is going to make a greater impact on people’s health. We can’t run from this virus forever, as it has to run its inevitable course. We also can’t be holding out for a vaccine that most people have no interest in receiving to begin with. Herd immunity is our only answer..

@Ricky10 but according to this, although we may feel more symptoms during winter due to the more active immune system, we are also, because of that, more resilient towards infections in the winter time.

Hence, Covid should be doing more actual damage to the lungs in the summer, as our immune system doesnt react so strongly as during winter?

If there is more damage done in the winter by covid, that would imply its the overactive immune system doing more damage to the lungs rather than the virus itself, no?

sorry haha i am confused

Well, considering no states reinstated stay at home orders, masks were mandated but not enforced I don’t see how anything has changed. “Herd Immunity” has already begun, so I don’t understand who is running from the virus exactly.

Community transmission is high (hence the infection rate). So.. by definition the theory of “herd immunity” is exactly what we’re in.

Seems to me that kids need to go back to school. Figure that the virus has roughly a 0.5% fatality rate (not huge but nothing to scoff at either) and of those deaths 99.879% are over age 24. So school age kids are the safest people on the planet!

Get them back in school, the virus spreads like the cold/flu, kids all get sick, then they get better. AND boom... 100 million more with antibodies and the safest practical big step towards herd immunity.

Unless anyone has a better idea while we await a vaccine that may or may arrive soon, which may or may not work, that people may or may not be willing to take....

Well, I think it’s a win-win situation when we consider what we seem to know about COVID and people with chronic inflammatory disorders being much more likely to experience severe symptoms. Also consider that we started using biologics and steroids in efforts to control the inflammation in symptomatic patients.

While our bodies may not be as primed to ward off viral infections in the summer, this article/study suggests that our response to the infection would be less severe or even asymptomatic due to our bodies not having an overreactive response. In terms of COVID, the hyper-reactive response/cytokine storm is exactly what we don’t want.

It‘s also interesting to me that this article references differing gene expression of white and red blood cells during seasonal changes. Symptomatic COVID patients will usually exhibit a low white blood cell count and impaired oxygenation- red blood cells transport oxygen through our bodies. Also noteworthy that the article implies our bodies exhibit better blood sugar regulation during the summer. We have all seen that diabetes patients are very susceptible to having harsh responses to the virus.

Speaking specifically about my own state (Maine) and more so my hospital, it has been months (with the exception of 1 extreme case) since I have had a COVID pt that was symptomatic, required oxygen etc. Lately, our COVID positive patients have been admitted for other reasons (Ex: drug OD, broken leg) and just so happened to have a COVID positive routine admission test.

Hopefully, there have been more asymptomatic infections during these summer months than anyone realizes/speculates and we have made some significant progress toward herd immunity. Unfortunately, I tend to think we still have a long way to go.

That’s interesting...

So apparently 6 workers became ill and 3 eventually died. Odd that they would not have been vectors for the creation of epidemic/pandemic back then?

Apparently tissue samples were sent the infamous Wuhan lab and it is believed that it subsequently “mysteriously“ leaked out this past December. Makes sense except for the lack of transmission back in 2012?

What exactly do you think you were right about? We are at 170,000 deaths in the US, putting us on pace for 340,000 deaths in a year from this - which is getting pretty close to the death toll that WWII had on the US after many years of war.

With a dramatic increase and improvement in testing we are showing a 3% death rate - when you once claimed this death rate was below 0.5% because testing wasn't up to par (you were right that tssting needed improvement).

Improved treatment and testing will obviously reduce the death rate. People wearing masks and following guidelines, which took quite a while to implement because of people making unfounded claims, also has helped and is supported by your chart. Especially, since you point out it was supposed to be 2 weeks and there was such a huge drop off in the lockdowns, and continued lockdows have shown continued declines.

Can you link the original source to that chart? I have doubts about it, since apparently a week or 10 days ago deaths for all age groups fell to near zero.

Now, if you want to claim the liberals have used this to their advantage - just like they use racism to their advantage in order to gain more control and power, I can find common ground there. But arguing that this isn't real plays into their trap.

If they come for my guns, well, I lost all my guns in a boating accident.

it was supposed to be two weeks of shut down.. remember.. to slow the curve.. it looks like those two weeks were the worst idea in history.. just look at the trajectory after 2 weeks..
Again, you take proof of something working and twist it to your viewpoint. If they said we need to lockdown to avoid this, we lockdown, and the deaths fall dramatically - it worked! Keep doing it...unless you are an idiot.

If I have a lion outside my cave and I decide not to leave my cave because I could get eaten, do I wait a day and then say, "Oh, I am still alive. This was stupid. I am going out."?

This isnt going away! What the hell does anyone think will be improved by locking down?? Except creating far bigger problems.

Look i have been travelling around the world few years ago...spent time at airports, in the Middle East, Europe where i was in contact with people from every single part of the world...i said to myself if i didnt get sick back then, then i wont get sick ever!

Oh but we have a VACCINE for influenza, so thats why its not dangerous!

Guess what, in my country, i am not sure if even 20% of the population gets vaccinated for the flu season.

Now some fools are talking about 7 BILLION vaccine doses that need to be distributed. Wtf?

If that isnt fishy i dont know what is! Create a problem that affects everyone, already have a solution for that problem and when its worst sell it and make huge amounts of profit. I dont think it needs any more explaining.

@HIT4ME if the lion is hungry he aint going away, in fact he may try to break into your cave and you can stay in that cave only for so long,

When I was 20 I was traveling through town with my girlfriend and her father one day. There was a rundown park that was unusable and my girlfriend said, "They really need to take care of that and get it cleaned up."

And her dad snorted and said, "There is no 'they'."

I think it is pathetic that we have become so fragile that if you take away our movie theaters, nail salons and take out, we feel like we are being infringed upon. Meanwhile, half the people complaining are acting tough like they have their guns and gas generator and buggout bags. For real, suck it up already. Put on a mask when you go into a store, just like you put on your shirt. Buy your panties on Amazon.

The real irony is so many people have become anti-social azzhats through Facebook and Twitter that they don't even interact with others IRL anyway. They go to a restaurant and Facebook on their phone. Not everyone, but the large majority. So wtf are they even complaining about? Personally, I welcome the reduced exposure to most of society.

But I live in New England and we were hit hard and I NEVER felt that my needs could not be met during all of this. Yes, I didn't hang out with friends...but I am busy and don't get to do that much anyway. Plus, as you can tell from this thread, most people can only take me in small doses! Haha.

But even at the height Home Depot and Lowes were packed, I could get groceries, I could still text, call and even zoom my friends. I had Netflix and Amazon. I was ordering supplements and whatever I wanted on Amazon.

To act like this is slavery is really far fetched.

Yeah, I went on a tangent, sorry. I am with you guys on the gun ownership thing. Not sure how many times criminals have to attack unarmed populations in this country before people figure it out. The answer is not creating more unarmed populations!

Of course, politicians only care about gaining power, none of it really is about protecting citizens. Pelosi proved that when she let everyone go on vacation without reaching an agreement for stimulus, but quickly called everyone back when the USPS' inefficiencies posed a threat to them saaying an election. People suffering is fine, but they won't stand for a threat to their re-election.

Two different issues being conflated.... YES there are elements of the quarantine/lock down that are undoubtedly politically charged... and YES given the way and rate this virus spreads a lock down is the smart initial response. After an initial disaster, how could you argue that the NY and NJ lockdown was not a huge success?

But in our current US situation that genie is already waaaay out of the bottle short of a new total 100% national lockdown for a month and that doesn't seem economically feasible at all.

So welcome to the Swedish herd immunity approach by default. And take another look at the old Spanish flu graph and the corresponding months of the year. Places like Florida and Texas seem to be tracking this exactly with a general summer rebound off the dip... oooofa

NOTE - source of the XreaperX graph is the CDC weekly excess death page. And this graph goes by provisional death counts and has about a two week lag. So the last two weeks always drop off to zero. The far right conspiracy guys were passing this graph around in late July when the spike totally dropped straight down. And then there was the summer rebound - i.e. "unflattening of the curve"

My point was that we should have never of locked down. other measures could have been taken. i used the graph to show that after exactly 2 weeks of lockdown the telemetry exploded. that didnt happen in sweden.

Actually, deaths follow a good month from any actions taken.... the sequence is that people get infected, then hospitalized, then dead. So your graph shows perfectly that the lock down is what finally changed the trajectory of the virus and saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

The only part where you are right is once the curve was flattened we were told the lockdowns would end. And at that point the blue states appeared to milk the lockdowns longer to slow the economy and improve their chances of being elected.

The Counter to this argument is that now the blue states like NY and NJ have their daily death count down into the single digits, while the red states that opened earlier have daily death rates in the hundreds, higher now than even the original march-may peak. See Florida and Texas for example.

And now the Dems are claiming its too dangerous to vote in person (but not too dangerous to protest and shop every week at Walmart!). If masks work so well, put one on and go vote!

I saw this chart earlier updated to today (makes USA look worse with the extra days).

basically to me it says that both the EU and the USA had a spike, the EU got a hold of it but the USA basically only managed to plateau, came out of lockdown too early (lockdown never properly enforced) and is getting fucked for it?

EU cases are under control but as soon as there’s the merest spike everyone is locking **** down over here. In the UK we have local lockdowns where restrictions are applied at town/city/region level.

I don’t really have a view on whether it’s being used to gain control, my soon to be ex wife is a respiratory consultant and was leading the response at our hospital so I can say for sure it’s real and it’s not just the flu. I don’t think being asked to wear a mask or not lick random strangers is a massive burden to be honest. Whilst I’m unlikely to die I’d be a bit fucked off if my elderly relatives ended up dying because someone felt their right to not wear a mask was more important than someone else’s life.

Whiskey - i would suggest that even the graphs being selected are an element of manipulation and control. Note how the left leaning media always focus on number of cases. But since the US has done the most testing it's kind of expected to have a high number of cases found. Not to say we didn't screw up in controlling the spread, but the number of cases (*gasp) is a pretty shitty measure. The number of cases as a percent of tests being taken is a better indicator (and we are having a rebound in some regions which is not great news). But the 'deaths per million population' is still the gold standard for measuring the impact of covid. In that measure, the US is still doing better than Belgium, Spain, UK, Italy, and Sweden to name a few. With Brazil, Chile, and Peru now climbing fast up the charts in a bad way.

The US is experiencing a sloppy summer rebound if you ask me (quarantine fatigue) but so many of those are younger patients (partying or rioting) who recover easily, so our death rate is not as shocking as the case numbers (*gasp) would lead you to believe.

If you are interested in testing data, here is where they track ALL daily testing trends and the more important "percent positive". Our number of tests went from 200k daily in May up to 900k DAILY by early August. So over 4x the testing yields 4x the positives, all else being equal.

The positive cases per testing got as low as 4.3%, drifting up to 8.5%, and now heading down again at 6.4%

I do agree that deaths per million is a better measure but from memory you guys were down in the 300s a month or so back, now in 500s and catching us.....I think most eu countries have stabilised that whereas USA and some others are still on the increase (it makes sense with your bigger population there will be a significant lag for that figure to catch up.

I guess an interesting component is whether the economic damages in countries who locked down hard is deemed worth it in the long run vs those who didn’t? Obviously I’m working on the assumption ultimately those who didn’t will suffer a worse death toll but the economic fall out will also create issues for many and probably death through poverty.

I have no ‘side’ in it, just find the whole thing interesting (and a bit crazy)

I completely agree with wearing a mask when in contact with others and also complying to personal hygiene.

I personally cant be under the mask whole day i feel dizzy, but hey, that is why i have/am tailoring my life in a way so that i dont need to.

One thing i definitely disagree with are lockdowns. There is no way they are able to justify that to me. And everyone knows it is not a long term solution.

Sweden who didn’t lock down is the first country to develop herd immunity!
Not a lot of science in that story to make it believable. They can't claim anything close to herd immunity without antibody testing to back it up.

We have falling death rates (them rising, now falling again) and can't claim herd immunity at any point without the antibody testing for scientific confirmation.

A more interesting story is coming out of the slums of India where they might actually have taken a big step towards herd immunity (about the same as NYC) but without nearly as many deaths????

https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/mumbai/two-private-labs-in-mumbai-find-antibody-positivity-rate-at-24-3-pc-6517163/

Here is some info comparing Sweden to London using antibody test results, and comparing their success.

https://www.bbc.com/news/health-53741851

But to be fair, London didn't do such a great job in controlling the spread so isn't all that different from Sweden in the end.

Not sure what this is supposed to prove, and all my far right buddies are parroting this same report as if new or meaningful. We have known this since the very beginning... if you are sick or weak, covid can kill you.

Most Americans have comorbitities. Nearly 3/4 of men are overweight. More than 100 million Americans have some level of diabetes. Nearly 50% of adults have cardiovascularvascular disease. Some 18 million Americans have impaired lung function.

What''s your point?? Covid is here. Comorbitities are here. Combined they kill people who were otherwise not planning to die anytime soon. So far that combination has killed 187,461 Americans. And still going.

Your point is what exactly??

oh and boi-o... i guess the point thats real hard for you to get, is that about 9k people have actually died from the wuhan. AS PER THE CDC.
But CNN says we should live in fear and shut everything down. It’s irresponsible to be driving around without a face diaper on. Infecting everyone with a virus so contagious that they have to shove a 4” qtip up your brain in order to even get a sample of it.

Let me present a hypothetical scenario here:

You have cancer and get the flu...the flu kills you. Do you want them to say the cancer killed you even though you would’ve lived potentially years longer with the cancer alone?

You have an autoimmune disease and are on immunosuppressants, you have an acute MI and the entire myocardium of your left ventricle blows out, you bleed into your pericardial sac, get hypotensive, and die. Did the autoimmune disease kill you?

if i'm dead my only concern would be that my insurance pays out to my beneficiaries at the same rate for either or...

The point you are missing (by capacity more than choice) is that they ALL died from the Wuhan. They were all alive, even with comorbitities. People with high cholesterol, diabetes, and COPD can live a very long life. And then the Wuhan Flu came to town and they died. The straw that broke the Panda's back. Alive then dead. Super easy to understand.

But if picture books are more your speed, try this.

197178

Every week of every month of every year people die. From all sorts of things, including heart disease, diabetes, and COPD, etc. A collection of the same stuff every year, a pretty regular curve running below the high water mark. Then all of a sudden the Wuhan Flu comes to town and the number of deaths go up 30-40% in a crazy spike. Nothing else changed but the Wuhan Flu.

Sooooooooo, what killed all these extra people during the months of the Wuhan Flu?? (*ding, ding, ding...) THE WUHAN FLU!

Look, I am a Trump guy... but this inability of the Faaaaar Right to understand and/or articulate basic concepts of health and math make us all look bad. Its worse when broadcast on a forum. And even worse when you get all irate about it, as if you have some long history of being the brightest guy in college and can't understand now why all the best doctors and scientists in the world just can't keep up with you.

Uh oh... and now this.
After 23 million cases recorded, Hong Kong just documented the first re-infection of the same person.

BBC News - Hong Kong reports 'first case' of virus reinfection https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-53889823
yeah this one I do think is a bit sensationalist - after that many cases if reinfection was a common occurance im thinking surely we’d be seeing a lot more of it - there’s always outliers in anything. The fact reinfections aren’t common makes me think at least there does appear to be some sort of immunity for at least 6 months or so
