Few posts above about fatality rates......

these are somewhat misleading when comparing country to country as the differences in testing are vast.

for example, South Korea tested everyone they suspected, this picking up on many who had mild symptoms, low fatality rate in percentage terms compared to the Uk who early on only tested those hospitalised, therefore not recording those well enough to stay at home and recover. Fatality rate will always look higher where your majority of testing is on those I’ll enough with it to be hospitalised.

I believe the USA has been testing fairly extensively?

the amount of testing will also throw out total case numbers - the UK is significantly higher than the recorded numbers. The US clearly has scope for most cases based on population size

but none of that really matters

what matters is the people dying through lack of equipment (I.e deaths that otherwise may have been preventable).

If a healthcare system has the infrastructure and equipment to deal with massive numbers in a short space of time then just let it spread. It can’t be stopped and the population will build immunity.

the reason that can’t be allowed to happen is that no healthcare system in the world can cope with that volume needing ICU and ventilation.

Having a 1% fatality rate is nothing to be proud of if 80% of the population get the virus - just think how many millions of deaths that is.

the spread has to be slowed down to allow healthcare systems to give people a fair chance. Many will die but less than need to.

Over in the UK we have two polar opposite leaders of the main parties in agreement. Corbyn is a hard left wing socialist (pretty much a communist) and Johnson is as far right wing capitalist as we’ve had for many many years. These two fucking hate each other, over brexit it was crazy arguing yet on this not one bit of disagreement over what needs to be done.
This is an excellent post. Well said.

if anyone was wondering why mainstream media seems so biased in favor of china---look at how much china has invested in American media corporations-comcast in particular.

there are many rumors that American politicians[both republican and democrat]are getting huge kickbacks from the Chinese.

unlike what joe biden has said said, china is not our friend.

10 bucks says it will be good old USA “big pharma” companies that eventually come up with the vaccine for the rest of the world. Funny how Dems love to villanize “big pharma” though. Also Bernie likes to talk about how our healthcare system sucks ass so bad, yet our recovery rate for American’s infected by this virus beats most of the countries in the entire world. Dems also claim to be “pro worker”, thus many were against bailing out corporations in this bill, yet they seem to forget the corporations are the very ones who employ the worker they claim they are for! They have a word for it when you separate employers from employees...it is called “UNEMPLOYMENT” which is exactly what would happen if we hadn’t bailed out these companies with this relief bill. And let’s not forget the bail out loans have to be paid back WITH INTEREST so the government will actually make money on that portion of the bill just like the government did with the auto loan bailouts that got paid back. Well I am done “ranting” for the night lol!
Yah no offense, but if a vaccine comes out in the next 6 months to a year, I will be god damned if I get it. I’m all for vaccines, I hate antivaxxers, but I’m not guinea pigging a rushed vaccine.

Honestly most republicans I have know hate big pharma as much as most democrats I know.

Dems wanted to save small businesses - not corporations that have spent over 1.4T in stock buybacks since 2014. And here I thought republicans hated government intervention in the free market.

Personally, I think anyone that aligns so staunchly with either side that they can’t agree with anything their opponent says is an absolute moron. If you think that your side has all the right answers and the opposing side has nothing to offer, you are blind and beyond rationality.

One of my good friends is the Global President of a major Pharma company.
I still hate most of them. He's in anti-biotics though, and I trust him. It's a matter of trust and greed.

I'm more speaking to Insulin.
When I hear about people rationing their own insulin due to cost, and possibly dying? Sorry. Not excusable.

I know this question was not directed towards me, and I apologize for the interjection in advance.

"A fast-track vaccine will be tried on people soon but it uses an unproven technology."

If it was to be rushed I believe is the keyword that popped out to me.
If it were to take 18 months, that's probably a much different picture, but we know how this may play out. This is a valid concern on his part, and I share it.

"What’s more, despite the fast start, any vaccine needs to prove that it’s safe and that it protects people from infection. Those steps are what lock in the inconvenient 18-month time line Fauci cited. While a safety test might take only three months, the vaccine would then need to be given to hundreds or thousands of people at the core of an outbreak to see if recipients are protected. That could take a year no matter what technology is employed."

What’s wild is insulin is like $5 in Australia but costs your first born and left kidney here in US. Epipens too.
I would not be opposed to a list of drugs that the government offered on a sliding scale with the lowest earners receiving for free. even better if government offered tax incentives to lily and others, I believe there are a few companies that offer deep discounts to low income earners?

at this point drugs that treat the virus are much more likely to help, imo….way too many people who are most likely infected who don't know and unaware they are spreading it.

vaccine would be very useful if this becomes a yearly event.

WHO is bonkers untrustworthy. Given their past with SARS in 2008 (or when was it) and the connections to big pharma ... are you insuing you wouldn't want to use the vaccine b/c you are scared of unwanted (planed by WHO) side effects? If not, otherwise all you got to lose is that the vaccine simply just wont work and you'll maybe catch covid19 ... which you'll either get over not even noticing you had it or maybe you'll get some fever and aches. So not really much to lose.

Let's not be so hasty to pat the CDC on the back, and slap the WHO.
My wife happens to hold a different point of view entirely regarding the WHO than you and she's quite vocal, and in healthcare. I'm not even close, and will not share an opinion.

of the 260 who died in the last 24 hours from covid19 in the UK, 13 were fit and healthy adults with no underlying health conditions.

there is no question that elderly and/or those with underlying health conditions are more likely to be fatally affected but no one should believe that we (fit and healthy adults) will definitely recover.

the risk may be low but it’s still there.

Good article about why forecasts are lately being revised down.
https://reason.com/2020/03/27/no-british-epidemiologist-neil-ferguson-has-not-drastically-downgraded-his-worst-case-projection-of-covid-19-deaths/

Meanwhile death toll keeps rising fast. Still doubling about every 4 days. That's gotta mean a horrible rush on limited hospital beds/people/equipment. I hope we don;t ever reach THAT breaking point! Really appreciate the @Ricky10 updates from the front lines!
Still just 3 positive COVIDS in my intensive care unit...all men. One is planned to be sent home to self quarantine on Monday, after his last dose of hydroxychloroquin. I believe they are all receiving that for for 5 days.

My other guy is kind of circling the drain, requiring 40-50% oxygen via a high flow nasal cannula (super nasal cannula in layman’s terms). While he looks reasonably OK, he has bilateral lung infiltrates and I wouldn’t be shocked if I walk in tomorrow morning to find find him on a ventilator. He’s a very nice guy and VERY scared...I try to keep him thinking positive. He has been coughing up blood which is obviously scary for him. He told me that if he gets over this, he is going to make sure none of his family travels anywhere, and that he is going to isolate himself in a desert until the virus is history. Those were his words, and we laughed together a little bit. :)

Today was day 2 for my vented patient, also with bilateral infiltrates and his lungs are in pretty bad shape. He has to stay very sedated for us to be able to ventilate him appropriately, and may ultimately end up requiring paralytics so we can take full control. The mortality rate once things progress to mechanical ventilation for COVID-19 patients is 80%- this is directly from my pulmonologists. I am going to have to dig deeper than usual into my bag of tricks if I am to keep this guy out of that 80% bracket.

I can’t imagine when I start getting more vented COVIDS- they are very sick and require a great deal of ventilator manipulation/management. While all 3 patients have comorbidities, none of those are significantly active problems at this time- they all got to this point from COVID-19 itself.

Ok, @JoePaul39 and @Iwilleattuna have me coming up with a mild conspiracy now, as I combine ideas, haha. Not saying it is malicious, it may actually be beneficial, but basic economics does show that high rates of employment (low unemployment) increases inflation. This makes a lot of sense. If everyone is employed and I want a raise, I can demand almost anything I want because I cannot be replaced - there is no one to replace me with since they are all unemployed.

Conversely, high unemployment is a means if keeping inflation at bay. Given the overheating economy, this may have been a good way to tap the breaks on the system. In this case, the breaks are getting slammed on, but long term it may actually

That's kind of sick. I'd call it a call for support. A loud call for the need that isn't being fulfilled.
Don't 'what about -- Gulf War' this.

What about Nixon and Viet Nam, prolonging the war so he could be re-elected. Much closer to our reality.
Let's just choose to not go there anymore. Let's live where we are. Here--Now.

Edit:

WASHINGTON (AP) — NIH's Fauci projects possible 'millions' of US coronavirus cases, '100,000-200,000' deaths.

can you imagine if Hillary [or any other democrat]were president with her/their open border policies....I bet the flights from china would not have been cancelled since they criticized trump for doing so. closing the Mexican border-I don't think so? this country would be in much worse shape under democratic control-I would bet money on it!!!

trump is polling at 60% approval for his handling of this crisis.

Honestly fellas, if you have family members who are obese they need to be staying away from this thing. Front line medics here in the UK are seeing more and more people being ventilated (and still not looking good) with obesity as the only underlying health factor. These are 30, 40, 50 year olds as well!!

We have an obesity problem but we do sit behind the USA in percentage terms I believe. You could have a real problem on you hands over there.

keep your loved ones safe.
I keep seeing people that are literally 200lbs overweight walking around with masks and gloves on. I keep thinking to myself, that mask is not going to save your health

Oh no! A country with 327 million people has 133% of the infections a country 18% it's size has!!?? Amazing.

To out it in perspective - the next 4 countries below the US on that graphic are still smaller in population than the US and they have around 260,000 cases - more than double.

If anything, it is a sign that things are going to get much worse in the US.

Using stuff like this as some political point is completely disingenuous propaganda. It would be more logical to spin this as proof that Trump's response has saved lives. But of course, it is too early to tell yet. Also, keep in mind his response has been appropriate in context. He has been hesitant to remove rights (in spite of criticism saying our rights are trampled) and we are free to move about and most of the sanctions are essentially voluntary and a lot of people are still not listening.

I would still put money on China being number 1 here. There was an article yesterday about how a single mortuary in China received 5,000 urns this week - which is twice what they are claiming the coronavirus killed. There are 13 mortuaries in China and given the delays that were being seen (lines of people having to wait hours to pick up the remains of their loved ones) - it might be possible that all 13 were in a similar situation. But maybe not. It is speculation. A lot of those may just be the normal deaths that occur anyway.

I'm not pro or anti Trump or any political figure for that matter. Im a firm believer that the president is a talking puppet and no matter who is "in charge" they don't mean much. I think it's foolish to attack or praise 1 person. I think there's way too many people involved in a final decision.

I'm sure il be attacked for this but it's why I stopped voting, my logic is I don't care who gets elected so I don't want my vote to tip the scales away from the people who really care about who the president is.

More people should be using masks though, not to avoid getting sick because it probably won't help IMO, but to avoid making others sick - because it will help contain droplets. Granted, it may help avoid sickness a little because it helps avoid your hands coming into contact with your nose and mouth.

I'm sure il be attacked for this but it's why I stopped voting, my logic is I don't care who gets elected so I don't want my vote to tip the scales away from the people who really care about who the president is.
This is exactly WHY you should vote and WHY you should vote for people who are not career politicians. Remember that the Republicans did not support Trump either - they wanted their own people in there. He was an outsider who has no needs and is hard to control, and that is a huge threat to politicians of either side.

Vote for people who have actually accomplished something in REAL life. I can say that for conservatives and liberals. Romney and Bloomberg are both good examples of this (I don't agree with their politics but if I had to vote for either over a life politician they would go in with a huge advantage ). Having someone ghost write a book for you and organising some committees is not what I mean either.

My comments not directed at thebigt, I just quoted you because your statement made me think of what I said
I am a veteran who narrowly missed the draft for Vietnam, I was among the 1st to enlist in the volunteer armed forces. I was fortunate to serve under peacetime and I have the highest respect for those who did serve during wartime....I support out troops and veterans, I support police and 1st responders, I stand for pledge of allegiance, I stand in honor of our flag. I enlisted for my country and I put AMERICANS 1st-always have, always will....I am proud to be a AMERICAN, I Iove AMERICA.

What the hell? Are you saying people are doing this with 'glee'?
That's kind of sick. I'd call it a call for support. A loud call for the need that isn't being fulfilled.
Don't 'what about -- Gulf War' this.
Any response that tries to dodge with the 'what about' gimmick is bullshit. If it happened, it happened. You can't selectively ignore history when it happens to make your party look bad.

I am also a veteran, and can say for a fact that the media did not report the deaths in Iraq/Afghanistan the same way during the Bush years as they did during the Obama years. Perhaps you are not a veteran to have noticed this as well?

The same can be said for the swine flu pandemic during Obama's presidency compared to this coverage of the Covid-19 pandemic during Trump's presidency.

And you need to look no further than the Trump impeachment circus with Democrats feigning sorrow (dressed in black for the occasion, when laughing and toasting with wine parties behind the scenes) to know the mainstream media storyline is orchestrated and choreographed for their maximum political gain.

I point this out as a sickness of the Democratic party, and your response is to pretend none of that happened and to try and 'flip the script' to claim I am sick for honestly pointing that out. That tells me all I need to know about you and the master you obey above all else.

'Nuff said.

I’ll make a bet now that in 4 weeks the talk of politics will have ceased for you guys. Republicans and Democrats will be working together, casting aside party loyalties like a robe at a brothel.

the only debate will be what is the best way to save lives.

the only divide will be between the younger (16-24 yr old) and the rest as the younger groups feel the virus doesn’t affect them and they are more likely to flaunt the rules, everyone else who gives a **** about people will adhere (you’ll be in full lockdown by then).

just an educated guess

I hope you are wrong about the underlying sentiment here (that it will get much worse). I hope you are right that the politicians will put aside their own well being for others.

I fear you are probably right that things will get much worse. I fear that you are probably wrong that the politicians care about anything that won't benefit them.

I will take that bet given the youngsters are almost entirely socialists who seem to be at odds with those who are most affected by this virus-boomers and older....I saw a post where a youngster recommended those who are infected in the younger age group infect as many older folks as they could, and received a whole lot of likes.

ok, boomer?????
