Anyone worried if Corona virus keeps spreading the gyms will shut down?

I work in a gym, and we’ve begun cleaning every 30 minutes with stronger cleaners. We don’t have any cases in our county or community yet, and unsure of the plan when it does arrive but for now, that’s what we’re doing.
 
Norways goverment just released their measures:
  • Kindergartens, kindergartens, secondary schools, high schools, universities, colleges and other educational institutions are closed
  • Exceptions apply to 15 defined critical social functions, such as persons in the health sector
  • Schools and kindergartens must provide services for children with parents in these functions, and for children with special needs
  • Cultural events, sports events, gyms and businesses offering hairdressing, skincare, massage, body care and tattooing are prohibited. Also, swimming pools are closed
  • Retail and commodity trading are conducted as normal. The Minister of Health advises against hoarding food. Follow the advice of national security authorities about what to wear at home
  • The transport sector operates as normal, but people are encouraged to avoid leisure travel. Do not go to work or school, avoid travel that is strictly necessary Avoid public transport, or other places where you can easily get close to others, and close contact with others
  • Restrictions are also introduced for visitors to all the country's health institutions. Healthcare professionals working with patient care may also not travel abroad to ensure that Norway has health care providers available.
  • Everyone who returns from traveling outside the Nordic countries should be in the home quarantine - regardless of whether they have symptoms or not. Quarantine after travel abroad has retroactive effect from 27 February
  • The public transport offer is maintained. People with critical social functions should be able to get to work and stay apart
  • Do not visit people at institutions belonging to vulnerable groups, such as the elderly or the sick
  • Healthcare professionals working with patient care are prohibited from traveling abroad - both business trips and private trips. They will have the costs compensated. Currently valid April 2020

Literally regurgitating the obvious, but again it's not working (obviously). You're purposing people to stop an ingrained movement (wiping and touching) their face. Most people don't even wash their hands for the 15-20 seconds to kill 95% of the bacteria they're carrying.

While I do agree people need to cognizant of self hygiene with disinfecting, that's not stopping the spreading as we've seen.. because we're not doing it already lol
 
Wonder why they shut down schools and younger grades. Stats I saw show no one under 16 has ever gotten the corona. Super rare for anyone under 21 to even get it.

Maybe they’re just carriers because apparently healthy children aren’t being tested...

We also have the SAT on the 25th. The kids are usually in a gym together taking it. We now have to do it in classrooms so we don't have too many people in one area.

Now this is getting out of control. My school closed for tomorrow and all of next week. Many surrounding towns are doing the same.

That’s the big thing right there. The main driver behind quarantines is not to stop the virus, just efforts to slow it down enough so that we might have some chance of having critical care beds available to the unfortunate percentage that will require them. Essentially spacing out the sickness so we have somewhere to place them, and healthcare personnel available to treat them.

It’s still going to be a problem either way here in the US (and elsewhere), it’s not like we have a surplus of critical care beds available even at the best of times. Nor do we have enough negative pressure rooms to properly isolate people that are symptomatic enough to be hospitalized, but don’t require critical care. I think we are likely to require some rapid construction of temporary medical centers as we saw in China.

The thing is, even if schools/universities decided they wanted to try and stay open, the attendance would be so low that there would be no point remaining open anyway

Also, they certainly won’t be open after next week either 😐

Gyms are going to be the worst place to go for this. Most people feel like they can't miss a workout, even if they feel sick, so.....

It's true man. 6 years ago I kept pushing and pushing until a couple (yeah ... They ganged up on me. LOL) of Drs insisted that I check myself into the hospital so that I could get treated for what finally turned into some pretty seriously imbedded pneumonia.
Sigh...
Hard-headed still, to a degree.
 
So yesterday I noted that a large percentage of the general public was staying home, yet today was busier than normal on the roads, and in the grocery store. It probably had something to do with the president’s address to the nation.

However, I was a bit disappointed by the behavior I encountered in the grocery store. I was picking out some apples and there was nobody around me. All of a sudden, this older woman (maybe 70) got right up in my personal space...like closer than 1 ft. Obviously I moved, but I wanted to let her know how ignorant she was being. It’s not my nature so I just let it go..

Also, two people coughed in close range to me without covering their mouth. They didn’t see me because they didn’t take the time to look around themselves and check if anyone was in their proximity. Not that they should be openly coughing anyway. I walked out of there with confirmation that basic hygiene etiquette and precautions will be too much to expect from the general public.

here's a conspiracy theory for ya...anyone heard of someone under 50 dying from coronavirus?...it seems that unlike most deadly flu outbreaks coronavirus is apparently only killing the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. guess who the largest consumers of medical costs are?

I have to take my last two classes online and midterm and finals online. Graduation may be cancelled, too. I have a meeting at work tomorrow and will probably have to work remote afterwards. This is insane!
 
Seems like the swine flu was worse and everyone was forced to go to school for that 🤷🏻‍♂️. I Was in 7th grade at the time and got the swine flu , well, a strain of it. Nearly out for 2 weeks lol. Brutal
 
All schools.in MD closed for a minimum 2 weeks. Grocery stores are empty with lines out the front door trying to get in. Gas stations are closing already.
 
Already 4 days without a workout. I really miss the gym, but it's wiser to stay at home as much as possible. Here in Spain the virus is out of control in some places.

Yeah, saw that to. Most scary thing is, he said, even when they get things under control in china, when life goes back to normal. When people get back on the bus, trains, back to work ... the virus will start up again. : /

Gym's are going to be a no go for quite some time. Here in EU, the pandemic will reach it's height in 3 weeksx or something like that. This means we are basically just waiting for summer to kill the virus.

Install your TRX on the ceiling and get some rubber bands to train at home.

Stats prove everything is blown WAY out of perspective with this virus.
  • Swine flu killed 12,469 people in the US and between 151,700 and 575,400 people worldwide, according to the CDC.The CDC also estimates there were 60.8 million cases of swine flu in the US between April 12, 2009, and April 10, 2010.
  • The corona virus has killed less than 40 people in the US and has less than 2,000 diagnosed cases.

My college just closed for 2 weeks. Hopefully it opens back up before my next clinical rotation starts.

My children's school remains open, though.

So... It would appear that I'll have a 2 week dad-break!

*I anticipate my kid's school closing, though. It just hit our town. Which is cool. The mini-me's will get swole with me.

Don’t get me wrong Corona is a problem, but not if you are under 60 with no preexisting conditions. If you fall into that category (which is most of us on this board) you probably have more probability of getting killed by a drunk driver or maybe since this is a steroid forum a heart attack 😂!

Yes, but we can’t compare numbers at this point to a prior pandemic that is already said and done. Things are still at the very early stages and numbers remain low at this time in the US because aggressive measures have been taken on a global scale (some countries more than others). If this virus had been allowed to run rampant without boundaries, it would obviously be much more widespread. Swine flu also had a lower likelihood of person to person transmission than what he have seen from COVID-19- which is highly contagious.

Even with ongoing/upcoming containment efforts, 70-150 million Americans are expected to contract the virus. This is on the low end (up to 45%) in comparison to the predictions other experts have proposed at 40-70% of the US population.

Exactly we don’t know the outcome and therefore shouldn’t panic.! Also, since it is a new strain of the virus and they don’t even know if it will go away during the warm season in a few weeks it is irresponsible to make predictions such as the one in the article that says “... up to 150 million Americans MAY get infected”. Notice the word “MAY” inserted in there?? That is not a very certain prediction to be a basis for alarm.How much would you bet on a prediction if if I were to predict “the Super Bowl next year MAY be the Chiefs verse Rams again“. Notice something? When I put the word “MAY” In my prediction I CANT be wrong regardless of the outcome.

It's like when people say flu kills more people every year, yeah a year of flu compared to one week of Corona virus. And like the Rogan podcast says it's the doubling rate that's the concern. Just now say 2000 people have it. In a few days that's 4000 then a few days it's 8000. You are only talking a few weeks before your getting 200000, then almost half a million etc. It's gonna peak in a couple of months they recon. If schools etc. Are closing now they ain't opening again in a few weeks when 100 times the amount of people now have the virus.

enormously less resources went into containing the swine flu than what is being thrown at coronavirus. and unfortunately many children were fatalities.

when asked why this virus seems to affect the elderly the most fauci said because elderly have weakened immune systems....i call bullshit on this, in every other virus children are right there with elderly as being the worse hit-except this virus.

Most of the deaths are happening in people who have cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or underlying chronic lung diseases. Those are all, generally speaking - diabetes being the biggest exception - are overwhelmingly diseases of older individuals.

True, but I guess you have to ask yourself if you care about those who are more vulnerable. If you do, then maybe making sure you don’t contribute to it’s spread may be worth the personal sacrifice of some inconveniences

officially 11,690 americans died from swine flu in 2009, 1,180 were children.
