There is more methanol in one apple than in a can of diet soda.
In fact it would take ALOT of aspartame to induce problems relating to Formaldehyde.
Granted, the way the aminos are bonded is also important, but based on what aspartame is made up of, its not a huge cause for concern
I'm on your side of the table - so I'm just pointing out "thoughts" that the other side has.
In the FDA post above, the person claims that methanol in food and alcoholic beverages is also absorbed by the body - but there are "protective chemicals" in the food that prevent it from becoming a formaldehyde issue.
They don't elucidate what "protective chemicals" are - but there is obviously some magic going on
I guess it's not all that different than saying sugar from fruits isn't as damaging as processed sugar because the fruits have fiber, etc.
It appears that aspartame "can" break down into methanol in acidic or alkaline conditions on the Wikipedia page.
