2009 College Football Season

Yeah, I knew the textbook ruling was coming today. It's been hanging over the program's head for a while now. I'm actually very relieved, as Bama self-reported it during the probation period for the Albert Means scandal. If the NCAA wanted to, they could've been a lot harsher.

So basically 201 athletes got extra textbooks to then sell for cash!!
Your right rubbering, the penalties could have been a lot worse.

Phil Steele's Upcoming College Footbal Rankings

From GatorSportsOnline today 6/12/09:

Phil Steele's College Football magazine doesn't come out until next month, but Colin Cowherd of ESPN radio got an advance copy and was just reading it on the air. Some tidbits:

Steele's top 11:
1. Florida
2. Texas
3. Southern Cal
4. Oklahoma
5. Penn State
6. Ole Miss
7. Notre Dame
8. Alabama
9. California
10. Ohio State
11. Virginia Tech

ESPN's Cowherd said he agreed with all of the rankings except for 'Bama, which he said was too high (what about PSU at #5????).

Steele has Ole Miss winning the SEC West and "Florida barely beating Georgia for the East."

As much as it pains me to say (I am a huge 'Noles fan), I just can't see a way that UF loses a game this year. I think Texas or OU will end up at 2, I think USC loses a game or two while they break in a new QB. If ND ends up at 7, it is for no other reason than they play what might be the easiest schedule in the country.

That would be PSU IMO.

Go Bears!!! I'm hoping Jahvid Best runs for 2,000 yards this season. It's not the SEC, but football season in Berkeley is definitely... ummm... unique.

Btw, ranking Notre Dame at #7 is undeniably retarded. Am I really supposed to believe that they're better than 10 teams from the SEC? Yeah... okay.

I would love to see Cal play a really conservative fanbase. Gay barfight!

It's really dumb to have Cal and SC both in the top 10. You know they both won't end up there at the end of the season unless the other big conferences have 2 losses and one of SC/Cal ends up undefeated and the other with 1 loss.

With them playing each other - and not really anyone else, I just don't see a dual top 10 team in the Pac 10.

Dear God at the Lamers being top 10. WTF?

Still, IMO, the only time vacating wins matters is if there's a championship involved (or in Bowden and Paterno's case). This penalty also sends a strong message that FSU's appeal is not likely to be overturned, hence Bowden will have 14 less victories.

Agree 100%.

A lot of sound and fury out of the NCAA but this signified NOTHING to Bama. Why even hand out that stupid azz penalty? I mean really.

In the end - the days of real penalties on big time CFB teams are done. They killed Bama for too long (a cash cow) for it to ever happen to an SEC or top 20 type team, IMO. (See these penalties, FSU's, and SC getting nothing.)

As an aside - I think you are right on the Noles' wins being vacated. I predict this is for sure Bowden's last season. He knows he can't catch JoePa (unless JoePa dies but then they might just have a season like Weekend at Bernie's where they wheel JoePa's dead body around in a wheel chair and just claim he's asleep so he can continue to pile up the wins and keep Bowden at bay).

As a Canes fan - I'm sad to see Boobah go. He's so clueless nowadays but was so awesome back 10+ years ago. I loved the wars UM and FSU used to have. Those games back in the day were NFL caliber.

Now - they are so undisciplined it's not even funny. Yeah FSU wins - beat us last year - but they turn right around and blow a game they could have easily won.

I would love to see Cal play a really conservative fanbase. Gay barfight!

They played Tennessee in '06 and '07. I went to the last one in Berkeley... and let's just say that, when thoroughly intoxicated, tree-huggers and rednecks are pure comedy.

Yep. Thats right. ND at #7. Are they better than some SEC teams, sure. At least hopefully they will be. That has yet to be seen. Our schedule is weaker than normal this year. I know that after a loss to Syracuse last year, SOS don't mean sh*t. But Clausen and crew will be more "matured". I believe that we will win 9-10 games this year. I might even go out on a limb and say 10. All I really want is continued improvement in all aspects of our team, especially special teams. That can definitely make or break a team. E.I. last year.

I'm really waiting on "Montana's offspring to step up. He was bad @ss at the spring game. Even showed up some others with more experience. But it is IN his genes.

Why when we play a lighter schedule, everyone says we win ONLY due to the SOS. When we play a tough schedule, everyone says we lose because we suck. That or the other team had a "down year." whatever

But isn't that what they already do?

hahahaha! it is, it really truly is. Good one J that gave me a good laugh.

in a sense, yes it is true. I love joe, but the hiding in the pressbox to avoid further injury just isnt motivational to the team especially on the road.

Bucknuts...It should be a hell of a game in happy valley. i wish it was an 8pm game instead of 4-430. The student body and fans hit their peak of intoxication by 9pm and Beaver Stadium becomes hell for a big 10 opponent.:food:

Wasn't it in Columbus in like 2006 when they forgot to pack Joepa's depends and he made the diarrhea dash across the field? That was hilarious. But yeah that game most likely decides the Big ten again this year.

Tiger Bait!!

I can't wait for football to start.

I will probably go watch the Florida and Auburn games this year at Tiger Stadium.

Rivals.com has Auburn ranked at #52 in their preseason poll. Hmmm... seems a little high to me!:lol::lol:

Rivals is run by a Alabama graduate.

And the keyword in your sentence is PRESEASON.

Auburn was ranked top 10 last year pre-season, how did that work out for us? Auburn seems to do better when they are not expected to do well.

Yeah, I was just tryin' to get your attention! I'm not at all a fan of preseason rankings. In fact, I absolutely hate 'em. There shouldn't be any official polls until at least after week 5.

It's certainly more advantageous not to have everyone putting a big bullseye on you early in the season. Last year's Clemson and Georgia teams are prime examples.

Hey man, how's that issue you PM'd me about? Send me an update.

Season Starts Next Month!!!

Agreed. I have mixed feelings about UF's almost unanimous preseason #1 standing. With this Gator squad having sooooo many expectations this year (Repeat National Champs?, Perfect Season? another Heisman) I wonder if the Gator Nation's expectations of perfection aren't actually detrimental in some way. I know the current student population (like my daughter) is somewhat unrealistic having experienced 4 Championships in 4 years. They expect a 5th. Anything less would be a disaster in their minds. When I tell her about guys like me who graduated there in the 70's and 80's who considered a successful football season as beating FSU, and a successful basketball season as fielding a full squad, she can't even relate. Her roomates look at me with pity.

Will this wonderful experience continue through 2009? Will it survive into 2010 and beyond? Will UF football under Meyer become a perennial powerhouse like the Alabama teams of decades ago? Or will my daughter's 4 years at UF (2006-2010) be some kind of Northern Lights experience. Beautiful, miraculous - then gone.

That's what keeps you coming back year after year. And then you look up and it's July already and the SEASON STARTS NEXT MONTH!!

God I love college football.

The thing about the SEC is that it is so tough to dominate it year after year. The competition is so good and the teams just tend to beat up on each other. It is hard to come through with an unbeaten record and on top of that you have to play a conference championship at the end of the season.

Looking at Florida's schedule it is definitely possible for them to repeat. They only play two tough road games. Georgia and LSU. Hopefully my Tigers can pull that one out. :sgrin: I'll probably be at that game.

Amen about loving college football. The NFL has nothing on it.

Hopefully my Tigers can pull that one out. :sgrin: I'll probably be at that game.

Yeah, LSU at Baton Rouge at night definitely the toughest test for the Gators this year.

("TexasWolf" an LSU fan, not a Longhorn?? How does that work LOL.)

You know, it might be a good thing if a team like LSU beats them in Baton Rouge in a close game around week six. Takes the pressure off, and no one's gonna clown on a team for losing to a quality Tiger squad... especially when there's a chance for a rematch at the end of the season. Obviously, it's extremely hard to stay on top and get "up" for 13 games. It's even more difficult not to "drink the Kool-Aid." Last year's Ole Miss game was the best thing that happened to the Gators all season.

That's what keeps you coming back year after year... God I love college football.

Ditto, my friend.:beerchug:

I agree to a point. The potential problem with that scenario are the expectations Tebow himself has stated pubicly which was basically "I'm coming back because I want to accomplish something that has never been done at Florida - an undefeated season."

So how the team would react to a loss during the season would certainly depend on how Tebow himself would handle such a dissappointment.

Personally I think if the Gators suffer any loss this season (to LSU, Georgia, or anyone) it will be actually harder for them to recover mentally than it was from the Ole Miss loss last year.

Both my parents are from Louisiana and my dad is an LSU grad. I grew up rooting for the purple and gold.

I get 'cha, but starting out at #1 and then feeling like anything other than perfection is failure... well, it's just a setup for a major letdown. Gator Nation should just sit back and enjoy having an excellent team. These times tend not to last forever. Back when Bama dominated in the 70s, going undefeated was a much easier task than doing it in today's SEC. One reason the Tide was able to do it during the regular season last year is that they had the advantage of being underdogs against Georgia, and then everyone kept waiting for the bubble to burst afterward. Oh, and it certainly helped that Florida wasn't on the schedule 'til the championship game! Hell, look at LSU the year prior.

Bottom line: I think it's outstanding that Tebow wants to accomplish an undefeated season. He's done everything else at Florida. They certainly have the talent and the coaching to do it. But if not... big deal, imo. A one-loss Gator team who wins the SEC Championship will still play for a BCS title.

By the way... I hope this doesn't offend... but I'm actually hoping for a Gator loss early on. I simply DO NOT want to see ANY team sitting atop the polls for the ENTIRE season.:irked: I'll be happy to see any SEC team win it all, including Florida, but I also appreciate a lil' drama in the process!:AR15firing: :borladuck: :borladuck:

No need to be sorry.

I honestly thought you were gay. Really.

I figured you assumed that a while back, although I'm pretty sure I never alluded to my sexuality one way or another. I just hope you didn't come to that conclusion simply because I'm a non-conservative living in the Bay Area. That description would fit a large chunk of the population here, and believe it or not TT, gays are a "minority" out here as well... unless you're in the Castro!

I'm not homophobic at all. My gay friends are all really cool to hang with. I can't deal with flamboyant people, male or female, and they all feel the same way. The gaydar is definitely in effect, and I've never felt disrespected. In fact, it's really refreshing to go an entire evening without all the hetero bravado bulls**t talk that typically arises when my straight friends have had a couple of drinks!

I look at it like this: I don't discriminate against males with ugly, obese girlfriends or wives... and to think of what goes on in their bedroom would definitely disgust me.

I thought you aluded to it but oh well. I dont like homosexuality and dont want to see it promoted or the social norm. Its a free country, they have the right to do what they want within reason (Texas tried to ban sodomy, Supreme Court said no.), and being gay is just one part of a person. Just because Berkley should be purged for the greater good of society doesnt mean we cant be bffs. I feel bad for you being in the Bay Area. Id rather live...well anywhere else. Im sure its a more "progressive" and "enlightened" area though.

Your sarcasm is duly noted, but please... don't feel bad for me. TT, it's difficult to hate what you don't understand, and you clearly don't know the demographic breakdown of the Bay Area. It consists of much more than just San Francisco and the campus in Berkeley. Beyond the obvious Oakland and San Jose markets, there are areas like Vallejo, Concord, Walnut Creek, San Ramon, Pleasanton (the most conservative city I've ever frequented), Hayward, Fremont, Santa Clara, Los Altos, Los Gatos, and Palo Alto. The pompous rich, the working class, the Muslims, the Christians, the gangstas, the wiggas, the rednecks, the queers, the illegals, etc. This area is beautiful, and diverse in both culture and landscape. I lived all over the country throughout my military service... Pensacola, Memphis, Dallas, Orlando, Seattle, San Diego, etc, and this region has a charm all its own. You admitted before that you've never even been to the Bay Area. I think you have it envisioned as some elitist liberal principality. It's not like that at all. There are plenty of ultra-conservatives, and every other facet of modern society. I don't mean this as an insult (seriously, I don't), but you come off as an intelligent guy with a bit of a chip on his shoulder when it comes to the political and moral views of those outside of your own compact, reactionary backyard. That kind of behavior is usually based on fear. I say this from experience. This area freaked me out when I was 20 years old. I'd be willing to bet you'd not only adapt to the culture here, but that you'd come to love it... as soon as you realize the scope of the Bay Area is far beyond just SF and Cal-Berkeley. That's what so nice about living here... there's something for everyone, and I don't know anyone who doesn't truly enjoy being here. Believe me, with the cost of living in this area, people wouldn't stay if they didn't have a fond connection to it, including the rednecks.

As for me, I will never live beyond a day's drive to Yosemite. Period.

Hope we're still BFFs. Either way... back to slammin' each other's football teams.

No one doubts California is a nice place. Its the people that live there that make it disgusting. People with no sense of what is really important. Im receiving plenty of them and you can have them all back anytime.

Ive been to LA and San Bernadino and those were fruity/******* enough for me. Im sure its a nice place, Crepes-a-go-go and all, but Ill take the Texas country anyday. Its not my style. Besides, I also like being a sneeze away from Dixie. Besides, we're liable to break away and reform the CSA when **** hits the fan anyways. I also like gun rights, and not being taxed to death to make up for politicians that say, "Wait what?" when fiscal conservation is mentioned. Also, we dont treat illegals like super citizens. :outtahere::biggthumpup:

Thanks for generalizing the entire population of a state with more people than Canada. I'll just go ahead and assume every Texan is a hick a**hole... because my Uncle Lonny is... and he lives in Corpus Christi.

Oh, and I'm geographically as close to L.A. as you are to Baton Rouge.

You were an abused child.

Sooo... in college sports... I don't know if you guys have seen this on Yahoo. No big deal, as a lot of college sports with championships have little appeal to most of the country. I just think it's odd that out here I never hear about all the titles won by west coast schools.

"THE CHAMPIONSHIP METHOD
There are 37 national titles available to Division I teams (three of those – fencing, rifle and skiing – are open to all divisions), with two in football (Division I-A and Division I-AA).

Among Division I leagues, the Pac-10 had the most team champions, with 11. The ACC, Big Ten and SEC each had five.

In all, 10 conferences won at least one title. That includes the Colonial Athletic Association with Richmond for FCS football, and the Sun Belt, with Denver winning the ski title. The Sun Belt does not sponsor skiing, but we're giving the league the title because Denver's main program is men's basketball, which is in the Sun Belt.

Texas A&M of the Big 12 was the only school to win three national titles, in men's golf and men's and women's outdoor track.

Winner: Pac-10."

I wasnt abused any more than the next guy. Distance /= difference. Anyone who moved from the south to the Bay Area had be dramatically different and not really liked much to begin with. Id like you to think Texas is all *******s. Maybe you can spread that belief around. So you can stop having people move here.

Lol, right. The Pac-10 wins in sports no one cares about! Weeeeeeee.

A&M has been winning the overall titles in the Big XII for a while now, no one cares because theyre average/mediocre at anything important. I mean, hooray track and field but cmon. Except for that really hot pole vault girl from Cal-PurgeitforthesakeoftheUSA.
