CROWLER's Triathlong training log

Can we get some pics of your gear? :p

I'd like to see your bike and running shoes.

Ok I have come out of triathlon hiding

Short story I won :)

I took my training up to 240 miles biking and 7 miles of swimming per week and it really paid off. I was over 2 minutes faster it is ALL good.

Training continues at a very high level and have added the running back it as I will be doing full triathlons with the swimming biking and running.

Still concentrating on the 'sprint' races which take about and hour to complete of 1/2 mile swim 15 mile bike and 3.1 miles running.

Things look good for the rest of the season. I am still maintaining my 200lbs and pretty darn lean. I eat ahhh basically anything. Really I do eat very clean then if I find my body weight slipping I throw in some other foods mostly pizza and or gatorade and simple sugars.

CROWLER

Congrats my friend! :clap2:

Nice Job Crowler was there any drama at all or did you blow everyone out of the water come on we need details.

lol

Well let me preface this by saying I did the same race as I did a month ago. It is called aquabike because you bike and swim. The vast majority of people do the swim bike AND the run.

BUT anyways. Being over 200lbs does slow you down compared to the guys who usually are around 150lbs or so. I am also in the 45 - 50 year old age group so a little older than most lol

Out of approx 150 people I had the 20th fastest swim time and sixth fastest bike time. I am happy with the results considering I have only been back to biking for about 5 months and just started swimming in an actual pool 4 weeks ago :)

I am now trying to run more but am having problems from a bad injury from approx 6 years ago. I am icing it 3 times a day and still getting swelling. To really do well I need to get my running up to 45 miles a week. I am currently at just 7 miles so not too sure how the ankle will hold up.

I also have found out somethings. I wonder if there is more than one way to skin a cat. you know how everyone says too much cardio will burn up your muscle? well I am doing about 20 hours of cardio but mega dosing EXCELL, Poseidon and whey protein. Those are the ONLY supps I am taking and I am still over 200lbs and can NOT see where I have lost muscle.

Chest is still close to 38" and waist is 33" legs are as big or bigger than they were 3 months ago, calves close to 17" Arms . . . ahhhh let's not go there. Even when I was 220 they were small lol.

Sooo what does this tell us, not sure but I will say I am eating a TON and feel pretty darn good as I HATE dieting, going low carb etc. yesterday was over 6000 calories. Most good food but also had pizza, jujubees and icecream.

I am not sure if I will EVER go low calories or low carbs again I REALLY hate doing that.

Yeh I am getting pretty sick of dieting myself. Good man!! Way to be!

This has been working GREAT for me... If I could clean up my diet a bit I'd be laughing all the way to the beach, haha... ;)

Congrats on the progress crowler, you're doing great. I thought all that work with AI would have made you slow and chubby ;) :hammer:

I don't know about you guys, but where I come from it's common knowledge that the synergy between icecream and jujubees is very anabolic!

WELL long time since an update.

Training is going GREATand have yet to miss a workout! Still hanging on to 200lbs, and have lost a tiny bit more fat :)

Did a triathlon Swim 1/2 mile Bike: 15 Miles Run: 3.1 Miles (full tri including the run) About 3 weeks ago and took first place in my division (Clydesdale)

Was VERY suprised and pleased. I basically just took the run easy as my ankle is still swelling up just about every day and I couldn't do more than a few miles a week.

Then to make things even better I looked back at the last time I did this same race, it was 8 years ago and my time was just about the SAME! Very nice 8 years older and very little training compared to the old days and just as fast :)

Well I have another triathlon in about a week we shall see how things go.

THANKS for the posts!

Really looking forward to the next 4 races I am doing one about every month.

hey crowler, nice work on representing the big boys in the tris.

i am just curious what your splits are for the clysdale distance? I have been competing the last 3 years and just upgraded to olympic distance this year... it was a bit much for me, I like the sprints better. I think I am headed down to Cleveland in Aug. for the race down there and I am thinking the clysdale may be the best class for me. Anyway, let me know approx times if you can. Thanks.

I would rather race you then post my times lol

As I say the this past race is the first time I could run in about 7 years because of an injured ankle so I am slow for a swimmer, slow for a biker and slow for a runner but for being over 200lbs as a triathlete and a grandfather I am not too horrible lol

The next race I am doing has 400 people we will see how well I do. I am not expecting to be on the podium but I will race as if I CAN make it :) I will update next week as the race is this weekend.

I know we don't talk much as of late Crowler, but getting married, selling my home, moving, and going back to school is quite time consuming...oh wait, this is your thread! My bad, lol!

Good Luck This Weekend & We All Look Forward To Your Updates!!!

you are fast enough to compete and fast enough to at least place well some of the time, I say that is an accomplishment in of itself. Sometimes you compete to win, sometimes you compete to beat yourself (e.g., just finish) either way, I appreciate the work and drive it takes to do so. Good luck in the next race

THANKS RB!

So far have been on the podium in all 3 races this year. However next weekend the number of racers is larger so . . . lol

CROWLER

Just curious, what bicycle do you use? :)
I just picked up a fuji cross comp to do my cardio with...loving it

I just saw this bumped and realized I never reported back on the race results. I ended up getting 2nd in my division (I finished 55 seconds out of first, and had the 11th fastest bike split out of 400 people. Not too bad for being 45 :)

Oh yea btw I had to rescue someone during the swim lol

NO joke. I was swimming along only about 20% of the way along the swim and there was a guys saying hey I need help! I looked and everyone was just swimming by him. So I grab him under the arm and start keeping him up and YELL to one of the rescue kyaks HELP ME! Well they start coming over but were a ways a way.

I started having a tough time keeping myself AND him upright. Reason is(I was a lifeguard for MANY years) it is more difficult to keep someones mouth above water than if you were swimming with them on their backs because of the flotation. So I am getting tired and I GRAB another racer by the shoulder as he is swimming by and say HELP ME!

He looks at me and says You look fine. LOL I said no not me HIM! and he sees the guys mouth is about an inch from going under. So he helps me hold the guy up til the kayak throws us a rescue line then swims off. So I get the guy on the rescue line and then swim off.

At that point I was LAST out of my entire wave and couldn't get my breathing under control. But I kept going and was passing people little by little and ended up CRUSHING the bike at 24 MPH :)

Maybe my reason for being there wasn't to be racing but to show what a Clydesdale could do. :squat:

I heard after the race they had to pull 16 people out because the weeds were REALLY bad.

I have another race in about a month. Training is going GREAT but YIKES it is getting A LOT tougher. Getting harder to recover from one workout to the next even with a nice 2 hour nap each day :)

GREAT to hear about the Fuji. Very nice!

I use an older Cervelo

Damn, that's crazy Crowler! Good thing you were there to help out.

Congrats on another great finish too!

Thanks guys!

Well I have another race coming up. Better competition and a little longer than what I have been doing. It is 1/2 mile swim, 25 Bike and 5 mile run.

Training has been going good but you never know what will happen race day. I always look to have a break out race which surpasses anything I have done in training, we shall see.

Training has been going very well, I have been averaging 2.5 to 3 hours a day 7 days a week. I know that may go against what we have heard for years but this is something which has been working for many many people from the back of the pack people to the pros.

I will get back with a race report in a few days.

CROWLER

Thanks guys for the interest!

Had alot of fun.

Swim 1/2 mile
Bike 21 mile bike
Run 5.5 mile run.

Short story, I took second place in my division. Not sure how far I was behind first place. At the race the results showed I was 1st in my division but at the awards ceremony I they said I got 2nd.

I don't feel too bad seeing as how the guy that beat me is 20 years younger than me ;)

I had a GREAT time and met a lot of really nice people.

Couple other things
1. Got stung by a bee about 1 mile into the bike portion(I am slightly alergic to bees and here I am 2 days later and it is still swollen, hot, red and the actual bee sting point is concave about a 1/4"

2. Bike hit a bump and the rest of the race a plastic part from my speedometer was hitting every spoke on my rear wheel, making a horrible noise.

3. My one piece race suit's zipper broke so I had to swim with the thing catching water like a parachute.

I am still waiting for the results to be posted to see how I did compared to the rest of the racers. I will post when the official results show up on the internet.

Do you happen to own a garmin egde/forerunner 305? It'd be cool to see your stats on motionbased.com or similiar. Too bad you can't use it in the water but running/cycling it'll work fine :)

Hey Dlew,

No I don't, I use a power meter on the bike but don't use a Gamin.

CROWLER

Just found this thread. Great job on the tris Crowler. You are really doing well! I'm a VERY average triathlete. It gives me an excuse to train. I'm planning on doing my first half-ironman distance next year. As you mentioned there are ALOT of very cool people and a neat energy in the sport. Keep it up and kudos again for your efforts!:clap2:

Dlew,

I am not too familiar with that product. What exactly does the forerunner do to improve training?

RocknRoll, 1/2 iron that is GREAT! Best of luck!

Well they finally posted the results and I am VERY pleased with the results

Turns out I had the 5th fastes bike split out of 200 + people AND about 150 of them only did the bike course 1 time. The race I was in we had to bike then run, then swim, then bike again then run.

So even my slower of the two bike times was faster than every person who did the bike course just one time :)

Darn just reread this post and sounds like I am bragging, I assure you I am not but too lazy to rewrite it lol

CROWLER

Wow, I remember casually following the log last spring, and I was impressed back then.

Keep going strong CROWLER!

THANKS Man!

I meant to say that includes people of all ages, shapes and sizes. I am a gramp and weigh 205 lbs :)

BUT then last week I did a time trial against 'real' bike racers, meaning they only race bikes and they weigh approximately 145lbs for 6' tall no joke.

Well I came in second to LAST :) It is true.

A king one day and a pauper the next

No worries. The first BB competition I ever did, I came in that very spot (second to last place in my division). Out of everyone in that division, I was the only one to get picked up by a photography company for a paying job as a fitness model.

My boss' boss has one, here's what can be done with it:

It basically keeps track of your stats via gps and saves them on the device until you upload the data to the PC and upload that to a website.

How do you incorporate your weight training into your tri workouts?

Looks very cool.

I would definitely be interested if it could tell me what pace I am running during my workout, that could really help me.

I used to lift 1 time per week entire body except legs, they are WAY ahead of the upper body and getting bigger from the triathlon training. Then the past 2 months I just have not found my way to hit the weights.

Something that WILL be remedied this fall and winter. I am doing ok still. I do 2.5 - 3 hours of cardio every day and am still over 200lbs BUT I want to do better.

CROWLER

Well I had another race this weekend. It was swimming then biking with no running. I won the overall but only because there were only a few people in the race.

While I won I didn't truly dominate and feel I should have been faster on the bike. I won by 1 min 31 seconds in a 1 hour race. I averages approx 23 MPH and really need to be at 24 or faster.

I really am not feeling good about this and have to find out what the problem really is. I think I went as hard as I could. Those moments in a race when the pain is so much you want to slow down I actually tried to push harder. When I finished it was well over 5 minutes before I was sure I wasn't going to get sick and was able to talk so I don't think that is the problem.

Maybe what I ate before the race was not good, maybe I went out too hard on the bike I don't want to make excuses but I want to find out what is up and change it.

So to me the only reason for this bad result is not enough and/or not hard enough training. I had lowered my miles per week down to about 200 and am thinking maybe I need to push it up to 300 and increase my swimming by maybe 3 more miles a week and some more intervals.

I am not sure if I am going to do more races this year, I really LOVE to race but maybe it is time to take a few easy weeks then hit the winter training hard. I haven't taken more then a couple days off since January but I am still VERY motivated and don't feel at all over trained.

I also want to try and pick up about 15 lbs over the winter. I lost some more weight because of all the cardio and am now down to 200 lbs. I would really like to get up to 225 by April and race at that weight all season.

Think it time to just go and train and stop this log until I have some positive things to post. I don't do well posting my daily workouts so I will wait and post some time in the future.

Quick update.

Things are going right along.

I am up to about 300 - 400 miles a week biking, 20 - 25 miles running and 5 hours of swimming plus lifting 3 times a week.

I get in 2 100 mile bike rides a week.

Weight is hanging strong at 200lbs. Not sure I really want to get any heavier as I have decided to enter the actual age group divisions.

I am gradually increasing my running mileage and looking to get up to 50 miles a week if I don't get injured.

Racing in my age group and not in Clydesdale will be tough and near impossible to get in the top 3 as I am easily 30 - 40 lbs heavier than others in my age group but such is life :)

that's good training ma man. don't cut yourself out fo the race before it happens. i have raced age group and clydsdale and do frequently do better in the age group even racing at or over 200lbs. you know as well as i do it is really contingent on the race and who shows. while it sucks to be carrying the extra weight on a race, if you are better conditioned at that weight, you are just that, better conditioned ;)

i am building a new bike now, so i plan on coming back faster next season. almost convinced myself to try a half iron next september... we shall see.

regardless, congrats on the progress.
