Frisco Texas

The Axe Man Cometh!!
Anybody here familiar with or live in Frisco, TX? I have an offer, more of an ultimatum really, from my company to move there. They will provide a pretty decent relocation package and I keep my job. Also, I'm a bit tired of Denver and was looking for a change. It looks like a pretty cool place but was hoping to get some knowledge from someone who isn't just trying to promote it.

My experiences were limited to the Austin area, personally... and I loved it. coming from the PNW I can say parts of Texas were a little flat for me... but the weather and music in Austin were always amazing. @MrKleen73 might have more feedback for you-

Frisco is fine. I would not use the word "cool" to describe it. It is Far Far North Dallas. I cannot think of the Denver equivalent but, it is fine. I lived in Legacy/Plano at one point. Depending on what exactly you are looking for, you have a fairly large area to find housing and commute into Frisco. Don't expect anything to feel authentic as the entire area North of 121 was built post 2008. If you are looking for Suburban living, Frisco is it.

Unfortunately I am not familiar with Frisco specifically. North Dallas has a lot of nice areas to live though. Cost of living is better than Denver for certain. Plenty of things to do in the Dallas area, it just depends on your tastes.

Thanks for the responses guys! This is really a tough decision as I've been with this company for 20 years. Suburbia is not my ideal but Dallas does seem to have a lot of nice museums and some other attractions. Plus Frisco does have the Star Complex, my office will actually be right across the street from that big playing field. Looks like lots of gyms too so definitely some pros to consider.

Also not for nothing, Texas has no state income tax.

Plus if nature is your thing there are plenty of surrounding areas you can get to quickly and if you don't mind commuting many people live like an hour out of town in rural areas and drive in at least here in Houston. I am not crazy familiar with rural areas around Dallas but I can almost assure you there are plenty of people commuting from rural areas relatively close to the city the same as they do here.

Sorry I’m late to this, haven’t been on the general chat, I’ve lived around Plano/allen my entire life, I am very familiar with Frisco. 1. You should 100% move there. It was one of the fastest growing cities in the us, I know it was ranked for it for a few years recently as well. Collin county in a whole is a phenomenal county, you can’t go wrong with any city but the prime time is Frisco/prosper/the colony area. Dallas cowboys the star opened more recently and the PGA headquarters just moved there too I believe(may actually be Plano but west Plano). The absolute best perk in my opinion is safety/school districts. By far one of the better places to raise a family. I by no means am just trying to promote it, I have nothing to gain. If you haven’t been you should 100% visit. The absolutely only knock I have on Texas, is the Nature/outdoors. We don’t have much. Texas is for sure about the people/economy. I will add, it gets cold here, my wife didn’t realize that moving from south Florida. Yeahhhh we had a feels like negative 2 a few weeks ago with wicked winds.

@ironviking did you ever move here, dying to know. Sincerely, an obviously overly proud Texas 😂
Not yet, still on the fence really but leaning much more toward moving. Denver is great but it still hasn't recovered from the pandemic and people out here seemed to have forgotten how to interact with other people. The rudeness is astounding.
I visit Frisco next week though, looking forward to hitting a gym out there and checking the place out, including what may be my work building. Any recommendations on a gym? Cowboy Fit looked intriguing but wondering if there are any more hardcore style gyms in the area or any you'd recommend just for a good place to throw some weights around.

And Thank You!!! your reply was extremely helpful. Either way my life is going to have a drastic change in course and the more info the better.

Plano has one of the original Metroflex’s, the one branch Warren and johnnnie Jackson liked! Brother you can bang and clang as loud as you want. Hope in the wall little warehouse. Also I’m in the same boat, I move to south Florida in January. Never planned on moving, but my wife’s family lives there and their support system it 20 fold better than mine. So while I want to live here forever, I know it needs to be done for them. But back to your trip, I’ve got you covered on food too, frisco does have new places opening up all the time though, so it might be a little dated. I have like 50 things going on in my head cause I’m excited you replied, there’s also destination Dallas but I’ll be honest, all the young influencers go there But has a bunch on new equipment, Metroflex Plano is literally like from back in the day on musclemag type ****.

You’ll get plenty of southern hospitality here, also, yeah I reread your message, Metroflex Plano will hands down be the most hardcore, then destination Dallas.

DANG!!!! Been checking both of those out online. They remind me of the old days about 17 or 18 years ago when I trained at a place called BIG (Black Iron Gym). It was an old auto service station, sometimes you could still smell the oil :) I learned to powerlift there from the owners who used to train at Westside Barbell I'm a far cry from those days but I'd still love to train at a gym like that than these fitness centers now days...they have their place and have some serious dudes training but sometimes there's just as much jabber going on as working out. I'm going to try and hit Metroflex on Saturday and Destination Dallas on Sunday. Thank you for sending over!!
I do hope your move to Florida goes well and you enjoy it there. I spent a few years just north of Jacksonville and loved it out there. That was close to 30yrs ago so I"m sure it's changed but FL is just a cool place anyway.

If you do make the move to Frisco, you gotta go to the OG Metroflex in Arlington. Yeah, it was/is an old gym but the vibes in there are great. And it would be a good drive. Maybe try it once lol

Looking at the map, Frisco seems too far from the salt water (Galveston) for me, my wife and I are salty people. but I do see a lot of large interesting lakes in the Frisco area. could make for some great fishing or water sports..... and the weather is always going to be nicer lol

Agree with Metroflex Arlington but it’s gonna be a drive from Frisco, that’s the one Ronnie was at! Food wise, you have to try BBQ the closest best bet is Lockhart in McKinney,(there’s normally a line wrapped around the building) but my favorite is pecan lodge in Dallas but I’m trying to keep it within a good driving distance. You also need to try covens in Plano. You have to get the lasagne (best I’ve ever had by far) and their smoked chicken ravioli with basil crème sauce. Literally game changer. Also legacy west in Plano on the edge of Frisco has a food hall, with about 8 to 10 little food truck style restaurants, it’s all inside and they have an outside patio, def worth it because it’s close and you get a crap ton of options, it’s not far from the star in Frisco. And yeah I know Florida will be good overall, but my biggest concern is professionally. I work for a fire department here in dfw, one of the better higher paying ones. I thought with Florida being twice as expensive to live, the departments would pay more. It’s looking like I’m wrong and the best case scenario, I take a 21k pay cut. Not only that, but I’m looking at annual run reports and across the board, the call volume is higher. It’s also the geriatric capital, which most of our calls is elderly. So I’m taking a huge pay cut and increasing my workload. Which obviously doesn’t sound fun. The goal is always to make more while working less lol. Oh, also I’m not sure if you’ve been to a Buc-ees before but it’s a gas station and kinda an experience everyone loves here. Their bathrooms have 24/7 attendants that clean the toilets literally after every use. So its like a relief when you know you have to take a **** because the toilets can be eaten off of lol

Bro I’ll be 100% honest. Galveston is a mud puddle shithole. Nastiest beaches I’ve ever seen, so I can’t recommend Galveston at all. Lake fork is one of the best bass fishing lakes there is tho, but you’d need a boat and all that jazz to do it right.

Oh I don't have a strong opinion on any of the beaches in TX, my life in TX was limited to Austin - Round Rock, Lake Georgetown, Lake Travis, but I always look at places in terms of proximity to saltwater....

Austin’s pretty dope too, haven’t been there a lot though. Speaking of round rock, round rock donuts is ranked nationally, best donut I’ve had! The icing is yellow because they used raw unbleached sugar!

Gotchya, just had to warn him lol

Circa 2007 to 2015 I would go down a couple times a year for work stuff and even hit ACL one year, I still have the framed holographic tickets. I really liked fishing at georgetown with a customer of mine, super chill area. The whole Lake Travis area is pretty cool too. The first visit, customer wanted to take me down to 6th for $1 shots.... Got back to my hotel around 3am, had to get up at 5am to catch my flight home lol.

I haven't been back in a while but my wife really wants to see Texas so its definitely in our future.

One thing I'll say, my customers always wanted to treat me to salmon and I was like dude, you realize I come from salmon land right? I'm here for the beef!

That sounds freaking awesome, and yeah there’s a lot of places to visit cause Texas is so damn big. If I were to cherry pick a place for y’all, it’s Fredericksburg and San Antonio. I absolutely love the riverwalk and Hispanic culture, so it might not be your thing as much as it is mine. San Antonio is also dirt cheap, even noticeable with food, you can go make it rain everywhere you go lol.

Also I agree, you come to Texas for the red meat and BBQ

Well back from the visit and I have to say I am impressed with Frisco. It is really a nice place. Every body I talked to, which was at least a dozen, had nothing bad to say about it or the surrounding area. Went to metroflex and met some cool hardcore lifters there, the clanging of metal plates, the smell of chalk, and the fierce look of moving weight was an awesome call back to the days of old. People everywhere were super cool and my office building was fantastic. It's brand new, not even finished yet, and about a quarter mile from the Ford Center. Housing market is definitely cheaper than Denver. so choice is made... I'm moving. Going to be a few months but I was needing some RTGs (reasons to go) and found plenty. thanks all for the feedback it was extremely helpful!!

Freaking awesome news! Glad you liked it, the love will continue to grow I promise. Glad everyone was friendly, southern hospitality is huge here for the most part. Holler if you need help with settling in or house stuff, my dad’s a master plumber, and with work, I have connections with pretty much any trade job. Frisco is so new you probably won’t need much fixing though.

Visiting the site after say 8 years? haha
This is the first post i come across. Frisco borders Mckinney where Lockout Supplements is. Some of the fastest growing areas in the US for sure. I personally had to get out and move to the country on some land. But if you're used to traffic and suburbia you'll be fine. There's plenty to do out here.

You know! I’ve worked out at lockout a few times years back, like 2014. Cool place, where were you at?

Either at the Fire Station or back here in the office or warehouse most likely....

Yes, Kris works here in Greenville.

To be fair, the beaches themselves are fine for the most part unless you came right after a seeweed dump which happens on occasion, but yeah the waters is a brownish green, or greenish brown color that is not pretty to look at. The Mississippi Delta just drops that river water into the Gulf and it flows this way. So the water definitely has some dirt in it. However, if you just want to go sit by the beach and listen to the waves roll in, or do some fishing then it is just fine. You can still play just the same on the beaches, kids enjoy it and 99% of the time it is completely safe to get in the water just like any other beach. If you are looking for a beautiful pristine looking beach and water you won't find it this side of the delta until you get further South West in the Gulf. You would probably want to check out Corpus Christie beach or something like that. There are plenty of great rivers and lakes around Texas to visit for water based activities too.

All of that being said, I only go to Galveston maybe once a year for the beach itself nowadays. When I was younger we had tons of fun there. It may not be the nicest beach, well I assure you it isn't but there is still plenty of fun to be had there.

Well now I kinda feel like an ass for shitting on Galveston lol

No, I mean if you are used to pretty water then come see the water in Galveston it is going to be a turn off. Especially if you don't know the reason why it looks that way. Then you just think EWWWW what the hell is in this water. So totally and completely understandable.

Outside of the watercolor the beaches are normally pretty decently maintained, the busy ones are well kept. The nicest commercial beach there is Stewart Beach, where they bring in soft unpacked sand is an alcohol-free beach outside of the bar at the pavilion so a lot of people don't go there because they can drink openly on plenty of the other beaches on the island. They also have volleyball courts, and do festivals and things there, it is actually a pretty nice beach, and not completely overshadowed by tall resort type hotels. Almost all of those are across the street from the sea wall, and Stewart Beach is down where the sea wall ends. Which makes it a more expansive area of beach and sand. They had to build that seawall due to flooding during hurricanes to have something break the power of the waves before they hit the buildings after everything was destroyed during a massive hurricane that killed thousands and thousands of people way back in the day. So they had to get rid of a lot of where the beach and sand was to build that wall. Taking a lot of the natural beauty by the wall taking up half of the beach. Just giving some history there, not a lecture. LOL

Plus let's not forget we have all of the beautiful women in this area on the beach too. So, all of the views are not lacking. ;)

Also you can drive, and also drink freely on East Beach, it is fun you can take your 4x4 or whatever out there and run through the sand and or some small dunes further away from the water where people aren't laying out. Lots of great fishing, a lot less commercial, and then the true party beach is like 2 Mile Beach or Jamaica Beach you can also drive on those, and drink, but it is not really all that monitored, there will be police out there especially if it is a big visitor week or they have a known rowdy group in the area like Jeep day, or the big biker day down there. It is the beach people go to cruise up and down, drink party, hook up. You know just the actual party on the beach scene. Lots of people camp there on the beach and or have big bonfires as well. So just depends on what you want to do, there are plenty of options depending on the desired experience. However pretty water is not one of the options. LMFAO!

lol then I found my problem then, I was never old enough for the party spots because It was always family trips while I was younger.

Are they promoting you to Somali Daycare Manager? 😂, honestly I don't know anything about Frisco other then it's one of the areas where theres Somali communities. Denver to Texas sounds like a big adjustment to the weather!

Weather, people, community events, offroading (there is none here), Denver has way more sunny days, outdoor life is massive in colorado if it's above 40 the parks are packed, no matter what day and how nice it is ain't nobody but me at the parks here, whereas inside stuff is packed all day everyday. It ain't bad I do like it just a big adjustment for me... culture shock. The gym has been helping me keep it together though.

yeah sounds like you may be a little home sick. I’m afraid I’ll get that too. I’m actually road tripping now. It’s legitimately happening and I’m kinda freaking out lol. Yeah the outdoors aspect of dfw isn’t really there unless you know people who live outside the metroplex. I had a few friends in the jeep clubs and they would always drive out somewhere to go mudding, so maybe try that. I’ll be able to type more later. I’m also considering stopping by Barlowe’s herbal elixirs because it’s literally on the way, just thought yall would get a kick out of that

lol really? I wasn’t aware of that,, that might partly be media exaggerating lol.

Denver sounds great!

Where I live, the parks are always full of junkies and homeless people lol. Connecticut has about 5-8 really, really wealthy towns and 100 poor cities

Especially if from Bridgeport area. Eastern ct is a whole different (read better) world. At least for a country boy like me...
