Thor's Thunder: Electrake's Epic Training Tales

I do anticipate deadlifting up to 500lb eventually on it, meaning the racks will be holding that statically. Redneck fix - 2x4s to the ground mid room, but I'll look into bridging with new insulation.

500lbs is the equivalent to a 55 gallon fish tank basically. BUT the weight isn't as distributed since it's going to be either only at two points when it's on the ground (the bottom of the wheels) or one point when it's lifted up, (your feet). so if you weigh 200 and you're holding 500, that's 700lbs of pressure right at your feet....

FWIW, I'm trying to get a contractor friend to come look at our floor joists to make sure it can support a new fish tank my wife and I are looking at. I've seen too many stories of floors failing.... better safe than sorry....

Any opinion on this? 2x8's, 15' across, flooring is 3/4", and I'd be building a platform for everything. Wasn't concerned about it until a friend planted a seed of doubt in my ear about bowing the supports (and needing new insulation (100 year old house))

You could also do a rack outside somewhere, if the garage isn’t viable.

So there was a guy in this group and I just can't recall his handle or the details but IIRC he was in upstate new york with his squat rack on the back porch, uncovered. He would throw on his sweats, shovel the snow, then squat heavy. that has been on my mind many years now lol.

I definitely agree with you, and have been eyeballing some Titan racks and gear. I'm still leaning towards the spare bedroom, I have a buddy coming over to volunteer in the disaster here who is an ex-GC gone engineer, going to propose what gphagan1 was saying and see if I can't get an in person opinion. THEN I'll commit to the basement lol. it has a weird tiny garage door I can step out to knock out log/OHP too, maybe make/buy some sort of rack for the side of the house right there that can handle the weather.
Ohhhh bro, that basement is practically calling your name then! Especially when you could just keep a few plates, your log/weightlifting bar etc right next to the garage door and just step outside to do those. Like I said, you can get some drop pads to throw down in place once outside, or old tires with stall mat over them, or use bumper plates.

The other thing to consider in the bedroom is pissing off anyone else in the house every time you set heavy weights down. The reinforced floor may not buckle but the entire house will likely shake ands vibrate if not on a concrete slab. In the basement, nothing... you aren't going to shake the earth.

I'm guessing your family got hit a lot harder up north than we did with the storm this week, my folks and entire hometown is still completely without power, lol.

Ditto! Hope everything is okay with you and yours!

Hey guys, been a while...

Last year was a doozy, up until about a month ago even. I'll spare most of the details, but from the divorce, 2 demanding damn near full time jobs, Helene, brush with nose candy that went too long, and other stuff, I'm back in the saddle. Diet is nailed back in, and I have a home setup that I'm working with now. I even have an assistant at my brewery finally, taking some weight from my shoulders while programmer land is ramping up. Missed posting here really, hope it'll be a regular thing. Weight dropped to 180.2lb as of this morning, 40lb loss since this time last year.

Knocked out my first session in a long, long time today, beginning a three week beginner/familiarization phase in order to start looking at big weights again. Not bothering with posting weights at the moment, more of an accountability that I went through the motions until it's a firm habit. Again.

Squat 5x5
Bench 5x5
Single arm cable press 5x10
Single arm cable row 5x10
Calf raises

I am looking for some recomendations too, I got this Titan T3 and pulley setup put together, I have 350lb bumper plates, a shitty flat bench, and whatever else you see here. There isn't enough room to the ceiling for standing OHP, seated is fine for now, I'll probably put a shitty wall mounted rack or squat rack upstairs specifically for that eventually. I know specifically I want an adjustable bench, and I need plate storage as well as change plates, and to put the rack on a platform. There's plenty of room in this basement, ~900sqft, but I'd like to keep things as compact as possible. What are your must haves for a home gym? Not pictured, tractor tires, log, axle bar.

In the spirit of the forum, I'll mention I have a pretty hefty SNS stack I'm working in to. A picture is easier than typing, but I'm working into everything as I'm more convinced that I'm sticking with my guns. I've been taking the brain/memory/stress stuff and powders for months anyway, working back into my joint support, and most likely begin the others the end up the week if I keep up with myself. Multiples of basically everything on hand, although I'll probably pick up some AE too. But again, need to prove to myself I'm actually back in it.

right on dude, wondered where you were!

is the weight loss intentional, or tied in with the blow?
that white peruvian is a drug that while looks enticing is something that always scared me for the effects on the heart. I had a couple friends that tell me their deviated septums are from a bit too much fun with white stuff.

The loss was a bit of both, I was down 20ish lbs from the stress of everything, the rest definitely wasn't helped by blowing down lines constantly. It was easy to put down, thankfully, once I got the courage to step on the scale. Thankfully it wasn't ruining the bank accounts and didn't cause any permanent damage (that I know of), but I'm not proud it got as bad as it did. Won't pretend it wasn't a great time though :ROFLMAO:

I'll post another starting pic here for motivation the beginning of next week. This week is about establishing routine and shaking off the dust. Next week will be about goals and where I want to be.

Glad you’re alive & kicking.

If you have a power rack, pulling platform, bar & plates, and those cables, once you get an adjustable bench you are pretty set for variety. Especially if you get a few different pairs of bands. Between those and cables, you can do a lot of accessories.

Eventually if you can swing it, a pair of adjustable DBs is a boon for options with minimal space taken up.

Everything else is getting specialized, movement-wise.

Forgot about that one... Still pulling heavy from moving kegs and grain sacks around. Guess I'll do some shopping.

Edit: I appreciate y'all still being around, definitely a few names I am happy to see still kicking around.

Glad to see you posting. I was thinking about you over the weekend.

I have a lot of Body Solid equipment that I bought years ago.

I had seen some equipment I liked by a cheap brand named Syedee and was very tentative about buying it bc it seemed almost too good to be true. At the time I bought it, I couldn't find any reviews; I've seen some since that weren't too great of reviews, but some of them seemed a bit of unrealistic expectations maybe - like people expecting gym quality stuff at super cheap prices. I can't say that anyone else would have a good experience with them, but I'm happy with it for our setup at the warehouse.

One other thing I have to give Syedee credit for - when it was first delivered, the bench was missing. I contacted them, and they had another one shipped out to me. They contacted me later and the shipper had found the other one, it had been delivered to somewhere in a different state (shipping companies fault), and they were going to deliver it. To my surprise, Syedee said keep it for the mishap - which was super cool of them being that it wasn't their fault and it was a surprisingly nice bench for the money.

Their website is gone now and I only see them listed as being sold on Walmart.com and a few things on Amazon. If I had the money right now, I'd pick up a few more things by them myself.

I'm sure that others will be able to provide much better information on much better equipment; I'm just pretty simple in my training needs.

There's a place up in Greensboro that has some decent prices sometimes and good prices on dumbbells and good quality if buying new ones. I think they may have some used ones too.

I haven't been there in 2 years. I wouldn't make a trip up there from where you are just to go there, but if you're ever up that way, I'd stop in.

I almost reached out a few times via text, looking through the forums here you've been busy!

Hyde is right, I forgot about the bands I have in storage still, I'll have to go snag those tomorrow. I'll check out that brand, there are a few specialized pieces of equipment I'm keeping an eye out for, but definitely adjustable dumbbells.

Right on dude, I'm happy for you, it sounds like you're in a great launching space right now. Nothing wrong with being on the lean side going into a strength cycle, your body will be a sponge for nutrition and training!

I was joking with my buddy that when I stopped lifting I'd been trying to slim down anyway. I just took the crash course this time

Welcome back brother….looks like everyone gave you some good suggestions, and you have a good SNS stash….should help you get back in the groove.💪😎👍

I actually hit concerts over there pretty regularly, but it is 2 hours. Closer to me in both Asheville and Hickory are used equipment warehouses, hadn't considered them until now..

Text me any time. I had started to text you too, but didn't want to bother you. I knew you'd had your hands full.

I don't follow equipment a lot, but one of my friends runs a training studio and he was telling me that he recently got some adjustable dumbbells that are similar to Power Blocks but much cheaper. I can ask him the brand of them too. He has several clients that got them too.

If in any of your searches you happen to find a Nustep, keep me in mind. I really need one - not a want, but a need, bc it helps my leg a lot. I just haven't been able to find one I can afford within a sane driving distance.

Any particular pieces you want, text me and let me know. I can keep a look out on marketplace up here. Rarely does workout stuff come available here, but when it does, its usually good prices.

Burlington has, or I think they still do, have a place that buys out gyms when they close. You may go in there one time and not find a good price on anything and go in a week later and want to go rent a U-haul and fill it up.

Just a thought - for the ones in Greensboro and Burlington, check the websites of those places and if you do find anything you want at great prices, I can go pick it up for you and either meet you halfway or put it at the warehouse until we can meet or make arrangements later.

That would be amazing, I'll keep my eye out for that brand, I can see why you wouldn't buy new $$$

I was going to send you the links privately, but decided I'd post them in case there's anyone else in NC that reads and follows along that this may help out.

Here's the link for the place in Burlington: https://superfitnessgymequipment.com/

Here's one in Raleigh: https://abcfitnessproducts.com/

It used to be, not sure if it still is, but that you could call the one in Burlington and tell them what you were looking for and if they didn't have it, you could tell them your price range and as long as it was reasonable, they'd call you if they got it.

There’s a used fitness equipment store in Hickory also called Used Gym Store. They have decent stuff. Just depends on what you’re looking for.

Literally a tab I have open right now! I'll be down there working a beer festival this weekend, hoping to swing through.

Wow, it's been a minute! Glad to see you back in here and back in the saddle. Sorry to hear about the struggles brother, but adversity makes us stronger. Glad you were able to put down the powder. We're all here to keep you accountable. Let's get to work.

Thanks man, it's a motivating community to be a part of.

I'm so sore today 🤣 getting after it in a few hours, programming has been keeping me up until the wee hours of the morning lately. Probably my biggest hurdle these days, establishing a sleep routine. Basically reverted to the army "sleep when you can" due to meeting job requirements. Not ideal, but I'm still waking rested and refreshed

Last week I got my full 4 days in, moving back towards routine. This morning was pretty brutal after the weekend of beer and debauchery at the beer festival lol. Yes, two days after it was over.

Squats
bench
Single arm upright rows
straight arms pull downs

Working to be more regularly on here, being out of town felt great though, only 1.5 hours from home and the furthest I've been in months :ROFLMAO:

Is that festival worth going to? I’m about an hour from Hickory.

this is my favorite hangover cure. Inevitably, humans will over indulge from time to time. I know a lot of people that roll over and wave the white flag for a few days but if I have too much (could be food or drink) I honestly feel like that nasty sweat session of moving heavy weights gets my body right so much faster.

Yep….sweat it out.😎
