Classic Kleen - The Road To Competition Fall 2024

Damn boy, fucking peeled! Be proud man, your work is obviously far above
Than you Sir!
Without being there, but going off both looks and general practice for the timeframe and level, I’d definitely bet there’s site enhancement going on.
Yeah my thoughts too.

So we decided not to try to water cut too 187 for classic. I am pretty dry at 196.6 so we decided to just go for broke. Doing weigh ins a day early for Bodybuilding then we are going to force a spill over then keep me full as a tick before hotting the dyazide tomorrow. I should look pretty damn big and lean for this one.

When is the Nationals show then? Thursday?
Yeah, Masters BB .middleweight. Just checked in at 195.2. So now it is go time for food! Slammed a 32 oz pedialyte in about 15 minutes right after weigh-ins. Will start eating real food in about 10.

Don’t forget your Superdrol if you have it & haven’t taken it yet. This really helps with filling back out.

We could form an entourage called “The Kleening Crew”. Maybe spell crew w a “K” or like Motley “Crue”. Get T shirts made for when Kleen becomes famous as a Masters Pro/influencer/trainer. He’s already in I.T. So we have a background for that. You currently operate a business and have contacts, I’m sure Smont has a “guy” for anything we might need, Hyde’s Co can provide fiber connectivity and I can maintain the network.
I’m TM ing this now. Lmao.

Take a picture of some of these meals, or give us a little tally later of what you consume today to top the tanks off!

Curious to see if it’s mainly chicken and rice or if he goes to something easier to digest like white fish, or leans more on sodium and fats in the mix like burger & fries, or has you do any fruit or candy, etc.

Thanks @Hyde. Yeah, I can see the water too but like you said, I had plenty of detail in several of the pictures. I had to be around 198-200 on stage with the water load. I woke up the next morning at 195 on the dot after pissing all day and night.

Here I am wide awake probably nervous energy from the flight, and North American Championships. Had my last meal, and if I still can't sleep soon I will finish the last bit of packing. I will leave here at about noon for a 2:00PM flight. I am getting up at 6:00 to send the wife off to work with some love and a package. She is going to overnight my research chems to me after I take them in the morning. Then I will head off to the gym for a Chest and shoulder pump session. Between my back, and cardio session I went hypo doing cardio and had to call it at just over 45 minutes. Was just too dizzy to keep going safely and somehow my jolly ranchers I have for those occasions in my bag were gone.

Alright, so here are some of my favorite shots from the show. Probably be 2 posts.

Sorry I missed the updates brother, but congratulations. You looked great, full, grainy and massive. Actually if I didn’t know your weight, I would think you were in a bigger weight class. Even through all the challenges you looked massive and shredded, and looking at these pictures your posing was on point.
I think you will take it tomorrow. 💪🏆

I've been lurking and following this thread from the start. Absolutely amazing job. Even more impressive you maintained the discipline and consistency while juggling a very busy life. Real inspiration right here. Congratulations sir!

Sounds like they didn’t have quite the showing they were hoping for, but this is the look that Patrick posted on IG today and I think he looked solid.

I went to the NPC website and the North American Nationals were already posted. It was a huge show….I don’t want to reveal anything so Chris can do it himself, but I will say he looked good in the photos and did really good.
Chris brother you should be very proud of where you placed and how much you accomplished. It is very impressive and really amazing knowing everything you’ve been through. And you looked like a beast up there.🏆

@gphagan1 Thanks for the compliments, and I wish that was my placing. They are just in alphabetical order right now. I think I may be last or was at the back of the line because I had the highest number. Either way, I am very proud of myself. I will fgo into the story shortly, going to a reply to all the comments first but wanted this one to follow yours so that no one else might think I had done really well. I mean I did well regardless, but I did not place well.

Yeah, I checked in on you with Pat earlier this morning and it sounds like maybe some issues peaking this AM/last night? He didn’t go into specifics, but mentioned there was some difficulty shedding water after the flight.

Placing notwithstanding, you looked great on stage.

Hope today is a great day for you, brother! Be proud of all you’ve put into this!
It really was in spite of all the extenuating issues.
Thanks!
Was just on his story, so not a full post.
Yeah he got annoyed, he posted something to his story earlier before he saved it and wasn't able to capture any pics off of it but that one. He didn't realize what had happened before it was too late.
I googled patrick bodybuilder trainer instagram chris and went through 15 profiles until I found it 😅👍
Now that is dedication!
The illest?
Yes Sir!
Yeah, it’s @theillestpd
He really did a bang up job this weekend with what we ended up working through.
Nice! Thank you

Yeah so hopefully without going on too long we had issues with peaking as you said. Pat thinks he figured out the issue. My water load was no longer a water load because with the 3 recent preps I have been at 2 gallons most of the last month. So when we bumped it back up to 2 gallons after having just did those 2 preps we think we needed to push more water than we were. There is also the flight which had me heavy, and then noting we tried was working. We kept moving toward the goal in my legs then my back would water over, them my legs would go super flat. By the third meal of the loading process it became evident this peak would not be anything like that last 2 and we were going to have to do our best to navigate the treacherous waters. What we woke up to was a flat but spilled over physique this morning even though we pushed over 1200 grams of carbs in the 2 loading days. I couldn't spill for anything then woke up spilled. The dyazide couldn't even do it's thing appropriately because it didn't have time since we were up until past midnight last night trying to get me to spill then had to be up at 5:00 to get me to tanning by 6:30AM. What is worse is that I was still physically full in my stomach the first hour.

@Hyde, to your question we tried just about everything. We intentionally kept things cleaner because I had gotten some stomach issues from it the last 2 times. However it appears it was more due to overeating and being too stuffed when I went to bed to be honest. We started with a higher fat, high carb load originally like we did previously and after 3 meals we were not getting a reaction. Noting really changed from them. So we decided to drop the fats and push carbs harder, we spent 3 meals doing this and we started heading in the right direction then my legs started loeaving again, as my back was tightening up. So we had to make another adjustment back to fats which looked like it might work and everything started looking much better before bed We expected to wake up peeled but that didn't happen so we had to start figuring out the issue again. We went back to low fat, higher carb and had some good tightening finally, then finished off with 1.5 blueberry muffins about 15 minutes on stage. he got me from looking like a mess in the morning to looking very respectable up there on the stage with some guys who I was sure were completely out of my class by looking at them.

On top of this, this is where the big bonus go, this was not a baby or regional, these guys were a cut above. I was proud to look like I belonged on stage next to them. In the end both pat and i think if I had the condition and peak from the 10th I would have made the first call outs at a minimum. i did make some rookie msstakes, but I am a rookie trying to play with the big boys. So that is to be expected. Many of these guys had competed for 10-20 years, and they were big and dense. Plus their posing and overall presentation was much more polished and better than mine due to the experience.

I am proud of what it took me to get here, and proud of how I handled all of the pitfalls along the way. Most of all I am proud that now I want nothing more than to pick myself up and get back to training hard after a little downtime and a push myself to be better. I told my wife a while back if I don't peak well or something I will have to do a show until i am on stage in what I feel is my best condition ever and I told coach, I think we were about 2% away from it which he agrees.

We discussed moving forward we were still going to bulk but I will about 5% leaner throughout the year and may do a mini-cut somewhere in the middle to restore the physique and prime it for growing even more after.

So this year we focus a lot more on posing, I will be able to flow by then with all the work I intend to put in on things. We will also maintain a lower top end bodyfat percentage.

By the way for anyone who wants to see them here is a direct link to my pictures.

Sorry about the mistake of thinking the order I saw was the results, and really sorry you had a tough time adjusting water, that had to be extremely stressful and I’m sure the cortisol increase from stress didn’t help. But man it’s very encouraging to hear how you’re viewing this experience, just another stepping stone, and so glad you haven’t gotten discouraged and given up, because from what I have seen you absolutely belong, and to jump so quickly into the big pond with the big boys is very honorable. And again you belong. It’s such a fine line between your peak and holding water or being flat, but every experience is a learning one for you and your coach to see how your body reacts to the different adjustments you have to make. Most people have no clue what it takes to compete at that level.

Still an extremely impressive showing. Sorry you didnt get the outcome you wanted. We all see the dedication though and know you're only going to go up from here! And following you on this journey really has been something to witness. Even as someone who is a fan of bodybuilding, hearing all that goes into the peaking process and day of contest gives me a newfound appreciation and level of understanding that I didn't have before. So thank you for that. Now go enjoy a little food and we'll deserved rest!

So things were a little off on the “pageantry” side of things as far as getting dialed in…..
That shouldn’t take away from the fact that you laid foot to ass for the last year in preparation. All your hard work, eating KLEEN, training like a beast, “supplementation”, practicing posing, working a full time job, being a husband, and a dad!!! Most guys don’t get 2 out of those 8 right and you covered all those bases. You are an intelligent man and have obviously learned a lot on the way. This experience is just more knowledge for the “tool box” as you continue in this bodybuilding journey. Life is short, be VERY VERY PROUD of what you have built/accomplished!!!

Oh, No worries, I thought the same thing when I first saw it and was like WTF that makes no sense considering where I was in call outs.

Agreed, there is so much science, and variance in each prep. Then the closer they are together the harder they become. It is just one of the challenges we face. The good thing is my wife is on board with this, and we are going to proceed forward. I am not stressing becoming a pro, at this point I just need one show that I am properly peaked at and actually perform well.

Thanks Segan, I am very proud of myself and honestly have no regrets other than how much money we spent on this but it is a part of the game and has made me realize if I am going to do this I am going to need a 2nd source of income. So along with some other things I intend to start doing some coaching. I am going to start with some lifestyle clients, not competitors just yet. I also intend to go to more local shows, and watch them so I have a better understanding of how everything needs to go. I consider the money spent here spent on education. Pat is working with me to teach me a few little tricks to make coaching and meal planning easier for me to do, and is going to kind of help me with instagram and other things to help build a following of some sort. Once I have a better following I should be able to get a few clients here and there and hopefuly as I grow into it I can get a decent amount of clients. Ideally this could become something I can do for myself and if it actually took off a change in careers could be ahead for me into something I truly enjoy and love. Something I have tons of interest in and self-educate myself on all the time because I honestly love it.

In the end I am so proud of myself for how I handled all of the curve balls I have been thrown during my 3 preps this last 6 weeks. I am proud of what I have built, and what I have achieved even if the results were not as hoped. I was realistic going in. Sure there was a wild hope I could take the show if I showed up peaked, and who knows if that would have been the case or not. I would have easily been the most conditioned guy in my class if that wasn't the case. So, we continue, and improve from here. Most of the things I need to change are within my control. So if I take care of those things I will do much better going forward. Then it is just a matter of getting peaked and who else shows up in great condition. Not me making novice mistakes.

SOmething crazy, I had some desserts, and pizza last night, went to bed at 217,8 and woke up after a night of crazy sweating 199.8 lbs. Wild and also happy that the meals did not totally throw me off, and I still have a little room for the food I will take in this coming week. I feel so much better after all of the food and salt yesterday. I am a happy man right now, and have no reason to be sad.

I did look at the new results, and I got 10th out f 10 but I was only 3 points behind the next guy. So that is okay, that was inexperience and a rough peak right there.
So things were a little off on the “pageantry” side of things as far as getting dialed in…..

Thank you Sir, these are my thoughts exactly. Now we improve, and come in better some time next year. I will try to do one in Houston this time so I can have the rest of my family come if they want to.

Told you bro: Dbol, Pizzas & GOMAD every day last week of prep would have brought you in full, tight, cut, dry AF

I’m glad you enjoyed the show, actually going to the comp & that process. You did a great job getting into very good shape; as you said, you belonged up there. I’m happy for you 🥲

Dude all of your responses to this showing, and this entire thread is pure leader ship / role model material. I love the way you have grinded it out, rolled with the punches, made adjustments, and kept doing battle. I can't wait to see where you take it from here!!

So along with some other things I intend to start doing some coaching.

I know some people feel like it can be a slipper slope if coaching starts to get in the way of your own training but I was taught, and firmly believe, that coaching makes you a better athlete. I really believe it has a positive effect on how you process the information, and drives you to be a leader/example.

WTF, are you sure your pecker wasn't hanging on the toilet paper roll or something making the scale look lighter?

Awesome job man and congratulations on making it all the way! It was a pleasure to follow along and see the progress. The shots on the NPC site are amazing, you look massive and peeled!

you looking to do some coaching, you can hit me up I’d be willing!

I just demolished 2 more pieces of pizza, and am taking down a whey shake right now. YUM!!! Check out this Pizza, is AMAZING! So FIRE! it is a place called Caliente and it is fire for damn sure.

But of course! :) Yeah, I was very happy when I saw the pictures that I looked like I belonged there. First thing in the morning I doubt anyone would have said that. Coach did an amazing job of bringing a sh!t show into a very respectable look.

Thanks Dustin! Means a lot, I feel how people handle adversity shows their true nature. My responses to the adversity are honestly the biggest thing I am proud of here. I have proven to myself how strong of an individual I can be and also learned where my weakness and prioritization of importance of things were lacking. I have good size, I have good shape, and great symmetry. My body is more aesthetic than most of the guys I saw on stage. I was missing conditioning and polishing of the pageantry side of things.

The biggest surprise for me which my posing coach woefully forgot to prepare me for was standing in Front Relaxed for long periods of time. While first call outs were out there and doing their thing, I was standing in Front Relaxed for probably 7 minutes. By the time I was able to walk to the posing position the outside of my ankles were just gone from spreading the flor as hard as i could to keep my legs popping. Totally on fire, and no stability. Once I started walking to the posing square my ankles were weak wobbly, and on fire which made firing my legs so hard. Plus keeping balance when the outside of your ankles are gassed is almost impossible. I lost my balance once or twice while setting up poses due to this. So we will be working up to 10-minute-long drills of standing in front relaxed as well as making sure I stay in the "relaxed position" while transitioning between poses. Pat told me I have a sleeper body, when relaxed I look much softer and smaller. So when I would relax even for a second or so between a pose, I would lose that shape and size.

As mentioned previously, we know what to work on now. We have a little bit of a map there and we plan to stay leaner this year throughout. One for ease of prep, and 2 a leaner body will help me attract clients on instagram. By the way since I will need a following starting anyone who can start following me there and commenting or getting a little traction on the page that would be awesome. My handle is @OldManKleen. Not much up there, but I will start posting some more pics up soon.

Awesome job man and congratulations on making it all the way! It was a pleasure to follow along and see the progress. The shots on the NPC site are amazing, you look massive and peeled!

you looking to do some coaching, you can hit me up I’d be willing!
That would be awesome, I will reach out to you tomorrow. Just kind of taking a down day today.

No worries I figured as much. Enjoy the day and that pizza looks da bomb!

Totally agree. I read Pats notes on the image he posted on stories yesterday and I thought it was awesome the way he put it, something like "couldn't quite solve the puzzle on time for him", he gave you massive kudos, said you totally brought it, and that he needed to tinker more or something like that. I love the approach you and him have in this process! I did go through the other competitors in your class and I agree with you 100%. I really think any given day, based on how someones looking that list could be flipped inside out and upside down. You definitely fit in with those competitors.

you know what's funny is I saw that in the comparrison photos and I saw you holding your pose and I literally was thinking holy hell how long does he have to hold that for?!

on a side note I was going through the physique classes as well out of curiosity. When you look at those pictures compared to your class it's almost like physique is just a "skipped leg day" meme. The guys are fit as hell, they look great, but man your class holds much more mass in the legs.

I did the same as Dustin and compared the other competitors’ photos and that’s why I said no doubt that you belong. That’s actually part of why I thought you took second when I saw the list, because I could totally see you taking first or second, and your group was very impressive, so I’m sure it was tough on the judges. But I thought your size, condition, and symmetry had you at the top. And I agree that your symmetry actually was the best in my book. I need to be a judge, I would be fair and objective.😎

Agreed, I'd love to see you hit this one again especially on a day where you and Pat feel like you have the formula dialed. You definitely belonged on that stage.

Agreed, some were in amazing condition though in person but had some aesthetic issues and a lot of HGH guts. I would guess I was on the least gear there in the open bodybuilding at least for people in light heavy weight and above. I think if I were this full and as dry as in most of my fasted check ins recently I would have made first call out regardless of my novice errors.

Yeah and it is brutal if you haven't trained for it. My outer ankles, and soleus were on fire!

Facts that is the stepping stone to open by for most. When they make the jump the really push legs.

Yeah coach said I had better condition than most from the front, but my back being a bit soft and then seeing it relaxed and smaller looking during transitions was a big factor. Relaxed I look a lot softer. He said I lost points there for sure. So we just have to keep me tight, wide and tall at all times. It will take work but I plan to work on it throughout the year until it is natural for me.

Yeah me too but we will probably do Masters Nationals for the next big one after a local practice show. It will be a slightly easier show but still a big one, and could earn pro card there if I won. I think almost a year of additional practice on all of the pageantry stuff, and coming in 2% leaner we will be a force to be reconned with in any Masters competition. If we can add 1-3lbs lbm in the process I will look insanely impressive.

You did one insanely good considering where you started and how you looked at the end. Took tons of hard work and dedication to get up on the stage with that level of competition. You will only build from this experience and if you choose to continue on will come back even bigger and leaner. Congrats on everything you accomplished!!!!

I think you‘ll do good in the Master Nationals. The more you get conditioned to the prep , posing, and day of the show pageantry, the more natural it will become and everything starts flowing easier. I’m amazed at how quickly you were able to compete at this level of show and were right there with them at the end, and guarantee that group was tough for the judges. I know you were drained.
My old workout partner, in the 90s, took about a year of serious prep for his first show. He won a local regional then in the 45-49 age group they had out of 10, but looking at you and your group, all you guys would have beat him, but don’t get me wrong he did good. That’s why following your journey what you have accomplished has impressed me even more, because of helping him back then. I’ll never forget, after the show, me and our wives went to get pizza and beer. He was so exhausted that he stayed at the arena. We all set in the back of my truck eating pizza, drinking beer, and having a good ole time. He thought he was in heaven.
Anyway he went on to win some more regionals, and finally went to a National event in Vegas, took 7 out of 18. But he got discouraged and just quit everything. Sad because he quit working out and got fat.
That’s why I was glad to hear you view this as a stepping stone, because it really feels like with a few tweaks you’ll be on top.

After a lifetime of building I am often surprised that people can just stop and give it all up, there must be a level of depression at play. "The lion likes the hunt". We all need and take breaks but it's hard for me to understand how a guy can walk away for good. I often wonder if there is a day I would do that, but my dad still lifts every day. Maybe he's just setting the standard for me. Hopefully I'm doing the same for my boy!

I just can't imagine not "training". Some train to compete in strength, others to compete in aesthetics, endurance, skill, but there is also the simple act of training to build a better life. I just can't imagine life without that.

Yeah prep is one of the hardest things I have ever done. We had to go hard in the paint on this one too get weight down quickly. We won't be in such a big hurry next time because l will stay in better shape this year.

Yeah, it is easier than you think to end up on a break if life interrupts and some are too proud to come back and be humble enough to start again for a while or ever. I have had periods of a 1-2 years I didnt.

Yeah, exactly….my buddy was 47 when he quit training, but like you said he got depressed and just gave it all up. We actually trained in Kenpo Karate together, when we were younger, and he did stay with that, and would play football, basketball, and softball with us, but he gave up weightlifting and now at 67 he uses the Chuck Norris I think it’s total gym or something, and lost his beer belly, but he tells us giving up and leaving the gym was one of his biggest regrets. Man through all my injuries I still can’t give it up. That’s another reason you inspire me Kleen, is you’re just a little younger than me, and seeing you navigate around injuries and life and then actually compete just shows what we can do when we truly dedicate ourselves. Sorry Kleen wasn’t trying to derail with my buddy’s story, just thought he was a good example of the opposite end of the spectrum in giving up and how you pushed through and actually made this a growing opportunity in your life. And I think it’s really cool you coaching on the side, because when you can make money doing something you love, then that’s the best you can hope for.

Agreed on that last point, and never a derail in my thread it is open to all conversations. We are all friends here , and it is a great point. Maybe you should point out to him what I did and tell him that it ain't over if he ain't over. Get back to it. I did from a pretty out of shape person after injury and depression induced 18 to 24 months layoff 2-2.5 years ago and if I hadn't torn my shoulder could have been ready in about 12-15 months. He can do it to. Look at the 60 and up guys at the show, some of them were beasts!

That’s a good point….it’s been about 5 years since I’ve even tried to talk him back to the gym. I’ll try and get him to the gym and on this forum too. Last time I talked to him about it he said I just wanted him there so I wouldn’t be the oldest guy at the gym, he’s 7 years older than me, and then laugh. Actually your log would be totally inspirational to him, and I know he would love this forum .

Still being moderately responsible. Saw a Cinnabon in the airport today and had to get myself one. So I was responsible and got some protein bars to go along with it. I went for full send and got the caramel pecan covered cinnamon roll. I had beef fajitas and got a piece of tres leches cake for dinner, but only took a couple bites and put it away for tomorrow. I was a starting to get a little full and saw no reason to push it. Getting my Hippo Burger and Cajun fries tomorrow, finishing my tres leches and then calming it down after tomorrow. I will still eat some good meals over the next two weeks but will keep a lot of things relatively clean.

I am taking off the week from training maybe two and do some active recovery. I will likely take walks at lunch or something. Maybe do some mobility drills and core work. Let my lower back ready and heal a bit do we can push things when I come back and we rebound it off this prep. I will check in once a week still but he told me to relax and have some fun, be social, get some drinks if I want them but keep the rest of the time clean to limit damage and clean up. He said go wild if I want the first week but I am going to play it smart while still having some well deserved freedom of choice in food and quantity.

Glad you’re getting to enjoy some good food. I’ve got to admit, I got hungry reading this….may have to go out and get me and my wife a Cinnabon now..
Man enjoy taking a little time off with some active recovery, you’ve earned it, and you’ll probably come back primed and stronger.

yeah for me it's guys like you, Kleen, Rocket (RIP, homie), @dapack who I know are all a few years older than me, still setting the bar for expectations. Guys like my dad who are on the treadmill knocking out his 3 miles every morning and his weight circuit, getting great physicals in his 60s. To me these are now the minimum expectations of myself in my 50s, 60s and beyond. I honestly get a bit salty when I see guys younger than me talk about age like it's an impact on their life. I'm like dude, if you're throwing up the white flag that's on you, not life or age.
