Hyde’s Strength Odyssey

ART said my facet joint is fine, moving normally and inflammation seems minimal. He was able to loosen a ton of sticky spots all over my low back musculature and I felt much better after seeing him. Lots of cat camels and icing is the recovery plan, he said I can pull Sunday but lots of warmup (including cat camels for the facet joint prior).

We believe the extra ankle mobility I did prior let me squat deeper than I have been, so if I lost a little spinal position at that depth it seems like my muscles took the strain. But it is muscular, not the joint or connective tissue, so best case scenario for a back strain. We’re going to curb the issue by squatting to a 16” box for now (not boxsquatting, just a tap to ensure I squat high in a safe range for now). 14” is my comp depth.

That being said, he really assessed my left ankle/foot - the one that has been badly sprained several times and torn something on the top in an exploded farmers carry, plus the Achilles that has been nearly torn by a super heavy truck pull. He believes, specifically for me because of how my “arch” is collapsed out and doesn’t fire, that squatting in lifters so I have arch support to better hold things in place will allow me to avoid the left calf tightness, knee stress, and underutilization of leg muscle I have there. He thinks if I can find one with a low lift and wide enough toebox to accommodate my extra wide feet that it will raise the ceiling on my max potential squat strength (coming from a guy who squats in flats).

this actually makes a ton of sense to me

Dude, that is awesome. I'm glad you have an ART who is so driven to see you excel beyond even your current best. So many people in these fields try to get someone from couch to fridge, and call it a success. Finding someone who is so focused on helping you improve as an athlete is GOLD.

He has been a big blessing, and he does not charge me anything - he takes whatever my insurance pays and voids the rest of it. He has so many patients that he doesn’t need to push the pay; it took months on the wait list to get in, even with a reference from a longtime patient who is a local bodybuilder. He definitely gets excited about his athletes - he went 10 minutes over my time slot today to help address the ankle stuff. And he is pumped for my wife competing at Nationals next week, as he has been taking care of her now too.

I can tell by his stories; he is always happy to get people out of plan, but it’s another level when you help someone achieve something they’ve never done.

yeah man that is absolutely a blessing. I have walked away from so many various experts in those fields over the years. As soon as they say something like "oh I don't think you should be doing such and such" anymore, I check out and either find someone new or try to find a solution on my own. having a pro that's performance focused is awesome.

I need to seek this out in my life. Sounds like a game changer

Ya I think people underestimate how nice it is to have a professional like that available. Not saying you should need to go to them all the time, but it’s super nice when something does happen to have someone who knows you and knows a lot about these things to both ease the physical issues and the mental stress and worry.

That second part, in my case, is as much the reason as I love working with him - he has earned my trust to the point I seek his input on acute training decisions. I look forward to bouncing things off of him to help decide between movement selection, things to avoid or lean into based on my current state.

Couldn’t manage to get in my proper position under the bar today; I thought my upper back must be too tight from getting locked up the other night. So all the weights felt crazy heavy; I had to take 3 attempts to unrack 285 on the second set.

Then we realized some bozo had removed the bench from the combo rack, but only slid it back next to it instead of putting it back into the holes. So my bench had been slid 6” forward under the bar & I was doing 285lb partial pullovers Upper back was fine, got in position, and finished strong.

Ran out of time for accessories.

Glad you didn’t injure yourself before you realized the bench had moved. I can’t stand when people are inconsiderate and just half a** do stuff that others pay for later. I totally agree with Resolve on how valuable a tool your ART guy is, and truly a blessing that he takes insurance. Sounds like you’re healing pretty good from that last injury.👍

my main gym has these two guys I call the albino twins now. They're around 6ft tall, 165lbs MAYBE, and I'm guessing in their mid to late 50s. Doesn't look like they've seen sunshine in a couple decades. They walk around the gym organizing weights and putting them away. I'm not sure if they're members, owners, investors, or what. But their autistic OCD is sorta awesome in their awkward way.

although the last time I was there they had a couple DB's and a plate. like a 50, 90, and something else, that they started stacking precariously like those rock stacks by the river. so still a bit weird. that project had them distracted for most of my session.

Ahhh yes, the albino gym eunuchs. They travel globally and sprinkle blessings upon the iron they encounter. DO NOT APPROACH!

One more normal session tomorrow night, then heading to Denver this Thursday afternoon for the wife to compete in USS Nationals on Saturday.

ART doc said my back was feeling better than it has in weeks in him, very happy with it, and to start loading things up in a partial range. It was tough to get under the straight bar tonight inside the commercial power rack, but once there my elbow didn’t have the pain it used to, and these weights felt pretty great overall. Belt also fit good, definitely not too tight, which is always what you want to feel when it’s been awhile. Tonight was great progress!

Heading out to Denver tomorrow, so this is likely it for this week - hoping the wife kicks some ass!!!

Alright gang, wife made weight no problem yesterday (had to get under 148.4). Nice day relaxing and eating with friends & she was going to bed at 155.8 last night.

Now it’s go time - shakers are full, the gym bag is loaded, and it’s off to Nationals for the wife to throw down! Should be a great fun day, so cross your fingers for us

Wow, amazing stuff! Big congrats to her - and to you too - as I'm sure the support you give throughout is significant.

If you jump to 28:37, my wife comes onto the field in the bottom right camera for the first event - the circus db press (her pet lift she went for the ATWR last year). She hits the 90lb db for NINE reps in a minute. Of the 4 other women, only a single one managed a single rep. The rest zeroed!

It takes a village to operate at the highest level, but that’s what produces the best results. Family, friends, fans, doctors, coaches - it doesn’t hurt to have me in her corner either

No training in Denver this weekend; just wanted to focus on supporting my wife & then enjoying the victory experience. We both took today off work to spend time with our son since we’d been gone 3 days, so I got a nice leg session in during his nap. Seeing everything creeping up! I had been considering raising my gear, but no reason to adjust what is obviously still working well.

I was also amazed how much easier the GHD sit-ups were since last time I tried them; I surely had neglected direct core training too much for too long before the back injury. I haven’t even been training this movement, and my recent rehab stuff alone has taken brutal sets of 8 back to easy 12s.

There is honestly probably a lot of truth to this! since she is a competitive person and she sees your training and strength you are likely setting the bar much higher for her to push herself compared to if she was only training with 150lb women. That's a great asset for an athlete.

Thanks for the video, she killed that lift! I bet the day off with Lil Man was awesome! I have been thinking lately how blessed i am to have 2 of my adult children living at home and one pays rent, and the other is 6 months away from kicking in on bills too. Neither of them really have plans to leave soon. Once upon a time I thought they needed to be gone by 18. Now I consider it a blessing to have access to them every day, and to love on them and enjoy them. Plus like I said, they be kicking in so they are also an integral part of the family finances. Anyway, just musing on how awesome it is to have kids around even if they aren't kids any more.

It is good for both of us, having someone who is both very supportive and also very educated about what is really out there in the world of strength. Someone who will help you keep your standards high & believe more in yourself.

But from my end, I think the big thing I offer beyond being an encouraging husband or fellow lifter even is my specific knowledge of competitive supplements, PEDs, water manipulation, hydration, and so on. I am really proud of the way I am able to help her cut weight, reload/rehydrate, manage things like diarrhea, nausea, game day hydration/body temp, timing warmups & PEDs, and especially blood sugar/energy - plus arousal curve & mindset.

I run around all day with a bag full of 10 different types of pills, shakers of fluid, etc helping decide what to eat when, reminding her what equipment she’ll need to swap to next, helping decide when to take a last piss even. We’ve really got the science of it all down to an art.

Her coach is there to tell her what to do technically, and offer another voice of support. I let him program & coach, and it just works very well that way. I am her handler - I help manage her physical and emotional readiness.

My stepdaughter just turned 23 and we love having her still here. She is a big help with my son, and they love one another so much. It is a very good dynamic, so I will be very sad the day she finally moves out - she knows we’d like her to stay as long as she does.

Amen to that! My ex may be my ex for a reason but when we competed together it was still fun and we found ways to equal the playing ground to compete and push each other with little things, like max rep bodyweight squats etc etc.

But from my end, I think the big thing I offer beyond being an encouraging husband or fellow lifter even is my specific knowledge of competitive supplements, PEDs, water manipulation, hydration, and so on.
that is seriously worth it's weight in gold. I've come to the point that I don't really trust anyone on a lot of those topics so I lean heavily on what I can grasp from you guys here. You, Kleen, Resolve, are like scientists to me in application and obviously Steve with his knowledge of industry ingredients, sourcing, etc.
