Official poverty levels are far lower set standard than $15 hour workers right? Not home so can’t look, plus I’m busy scouting for more beat up mini-vans
Official poverty is <25k per year for a family of 4.

Living wage is higher than that but many companies are opposed that because it hurts shareholder returns and churn out the mistrust that it will cause a rise in costs, something which many smaller companies with higher minimum wages dispute.

Smaller food chains have demonstrated this by having low cost food items BUT pay their staff an actual living wage.

25k is shyt garbage in New York especially for a family of 4, even family of 2. Some other states may be so so, but really 30k+ your still poor.

Government declares what "poverty" is, big LMFAO they are either out of touch with reality or just playing games, I say both.

i am replying to his post where he said bezos staff lives in poverty.

i actually don't think they do-but just going by what he said:unsure:
He has created ALOT of good paying jobs and keeps expanding thats for sure.

Now the $15/hr workers really dont have it good, but thats really a individual thing and other politics which I wont get into here such as cost of living. I wouldnt really blame Bezos for that, plus he has been raising his wages up above both federal and state minimums.

Yeah thats like actual actual poverty. But really if you work full time and you're paid anything where you still require govt assistance to top you up is poverty.

If Amazon can afford to spend 5.5B to send Bezos to space for 4 minutes, then they CAN afford to pay their staff enough that they don't require govt assistance.

I assume he also created a nice chunk of his high paying jobs with his own space programs that wouldnt have existed if he hadnt made a fortune to begin with. When people have accesses they likely take more chances and risks and create more wealth for others rather than having more mediocre jobs.

Being someone who has been poor and even homeless in my life in the past, I always see it as what is it that I could do for myself to be in better position to earn income, but before that came to plans my biggest complain in life was they the hell is life, rent, cost of living so damn high. And that was in the 90s, things are way more expensive and the purchasing power is far less now these days in NY.

the government is out of touch, no doubt...there are employee shortages in every chain store i go into and they all have help wanted signs, but yet biden's mandate threatens to fire employees. besides the fact that i don't agree with forcing people to do what the government says or loose job, it's just stupid.

to summarize: not only do his POVERTY staff get back every cent they paid in taxes they actually get back a additional bonus!!!
On the other hand, people in poverty still need to cover for whats stolen from the middle class and rich which = increased cost of living. One way or another, high taxes on rich will equate to trickle down economics no matter what.

yes, and raising minimum wage will have same effect...the government should realize they can't legislate poor people out of poverty--the people who escape poverty did it with hard work and determination-the same way i made a good life for my family with only a HS degree-i busted my ass.

Ive been around so many poor people around my youth, generally their focus was smoking pot, drinking, playing video games, hanging out wasting time, not going to a free library, not looking into acquiring new skills perhaps looking for a vocational school, etc.......Yeah that was me too, although I decided wake up around 22-23 and get on track with my life, go to college and focus more on bettering myself and eliminating toxic people in my life. I thank the discipline from weight training as a big credit for my turnaround. Some people find Jesus, I found weight plates and dumbbells, LOL!

joining the navy got me out of that life...and then later finding GOD got me sobriety and my life really took on new meaning.

i truly feel blessed, but the choices i made are choices that are there for everyone if they choose...

imagine the impact obama could have on inner city chicago youths if he were to devote himself to inspiring them to work hard and get out of poverty--he could have a really positive impact if he were to dedicate himself to it.

The way to challenge Jiigz' corporate heist would be for Bezos to shut the doors. Just close down. He has all the money he ever needs... why put up with the aggravation?

NOTHING more for the Democrats spend-o-rama. No more money from Bezos, the 1% (tens of millions of dollars) POOF, gone. And all the people complaining they were close to poverty get to experience the real thing. They all lose their jobs AND the Dems lose that tax revenue too.

Eventually the golden goose says F-off... LOL

Except he won't, because his shareholders wouldn't allow him too. He has a 10% stake in Amazon.

Plus if he did close up, then the govt would probably save on welfare for his staff on foodstamps which costs more than he paid in tax LOL

Amazon paid less in tax prior to 2018 than ANY tax paying citizen. And yet your tax dollars are helping feed his staff

MOST people your age could walk into any job without a qualification beyond high school, now they require a PhD to make a burger. If you did need a college degree then you could pay for that by working part time and studying. Nowadays a full time student needs a full time job to afford even just a fraction of their dues. It can't happen obviously, and the debt is astronomical. Even in the 90s you could buy a house for like 3-5x your salary, now at a minimum most places are 20x an average annual salary. My parents bought their first house for like 50k and my dad alone made that in a year lol. My first house cost 600k, and I can tell you now that isn't my annual salary.

Times have changed and you're still stuck in a 70's mindset of when houses cost 50 bucks and a pack of smokes

Cost of living isn't his fault, but ethically if your company can afford to send you to space at a cost of 5.5B for 4 minutes, then they can definitely afford to pay you more.

With 500k employees at around $15 p/hr, the 5.5B could give each employee approx 11k more p/a.

If you look all over social media, people are not taking low paid jobs at supermarkets with no benefits on purpose. They're sick of it.

People everywhere are taking a stand against poverty wages for million dollar corps.

Arent they in need of spending billions going into space and launching rockets over and over again?

And arent they advertising the beginnings of space travel? Of course if we are specifically keeping to just space travel topic, costs are going to be through rather astronomical until it is perfected efficiently and down to a consumer level service.

What Im trying to say is, 5.5 billion seems like alot to throw out, but we are talking about future space travel, and even future rocket high speed domestic travel creating the many good paying jobs of the future.

Innovation isnt cheap...innovation also requires many risk taking which also required a potential of a very high reward. Think how much the first calculators cost? They filled up an entire room, we could have made the argument money would have been better spent paying the janitor cleaning toilets better wages.

Its easy to go on social media and protest when government in printing trillions of dollars out of thin air to have people stay home and do nothing for over a year in a half. They are going to be hurt long term, except for the few smart ones that took advantage of the extra income and did something with it to prop them up with the party is over.

It has nothing to do with being sick of anything, it’s just they they can afford to be sick of it temporarily until the food that feeds them has you running the machines again because every penny they were given must be paid back at their own expense.

There's definitely no understanding the value of innovation, the point is that the 5.5B barely scratches at the disposable or leveragable finances of Amazon. They have access to hordes of cash, far more than that 5.5B.

Gravity Payments have a 70k minimum wage, and they have seen profits soar and employee retention increase HUGE amounts. Lots of companies are following suit and noticing similar trends.

i did have a good job because i worked my way up after starting at bottom. but got laid off in 2008 and had to cash in 401k and sold our house to have money to start my business--i could have just sold house and collected unemployment for the next 2-3 years like many did back then...it was a real risk cashing in 401k early, not only did the stock market crash but the penalties were awful-i probably ended up with a 4th of what it was worth in 2007. my whole lifes savings were at risk when i started my business but hard work and hustle paid off again.

i was born dirt poor and worked very hard for everything i ever had---how about you?

If its honest money I really dont care how much they make, but I can agree there are issue's here. For one thing, various areas on the country have the audacity to give Amazon and other major tech companies tax free havens in order to seduce to go to them. Its good for the economy and jobs, but at the same time this isnt a equal playing field for the smaller and middle class business people, its not fair.

The bigs are in the pockets of the policy makers, most changes and regulations are usually in the favor of the big guy although most people think its to help the little guy.

There certainly is alot of dishonesty, disadvantages and corruption (I include those "legal" ones too!) that allows these bigs to go full steam ahead, but other than that if its a honest buck I could care less how many quadrillions they make if its on a equal playing field.

How does you deciding to gamble your 401 make you poor? If I heard that right, you HAD the money AND decided to gamble starting a business with it. If you could start a business, how are you poor??

Plus how did any of that dismiss how much easier it was for people to walk in to a job AND buy your first home that long ago??

I heard they have been sucking crap at getting vaccines rolled out too, I thought they would be the ones to be on top of that?

This is 2 weeks old but I was just looking for it because I heard about it earlier.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison is under fire for a sluggish vaccine rollout, with 19.65% of its population fully vaccinated, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. This is far below numbers seen in the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union -- despite Australia's smaller population.

BTW the point isn't to dismiss individual struggle. Everyone fights their own battles, but the point is that if you ask a 20 year old now when they think they could afford a house it is depressing.

In NZ, we needee a 20% deposit on a 600,000 house. So $120,000 liquid cash. Average Auckland houseprice is 900k, so you'd need $180k cash.

How many people have that kind of savings?

let me tell you something...if you think it was any easier being poor in the 70s than it is today you are stupid--every generation has it's problems...poor has never been fun

unless you were a dirt poor kid growing up in 70s America you are not qualified to tell me it was easier then than now....not to mention that many poor kids in my generation were drafted and sent to nam-since i was 7 years old up until i was 17 guys were getting drafted and sent to nam. i missed nam by 1 year. i enlisted in 76 and got a lot of heat for enlisting-my mothers house was egged-there was a huge anti-military sentiment following nam--but you wouldn't know about that-eh?

how old are you?

It was certainly easier to get a job without a qualification and easier to buy a house.

Poor is poor of course, but things were a lot more affordable for the majority back then.

The problem is so many of the older generation just say "suck it up and work your way up like I did", when now student debt is astronomical compared to back then, cost of living has skyrocketed, house prices are 10x what they were with a lower debt:income needed and lower down-payment, and the minimum wage equivalent was roughly the same if not MORE than it is now.

Times are not the same. Back in the 90s and before, middle class Americans held a majority of all wealth, now it is the top few percent who do.

But people are still saying "well when I was 20 I had to work hard to get where I am blah blah" when it was considerably and verifiably EASIER than it is now.

Why don't you just ship boat loads of immigrants into NZ to lower the competitive wages, and raise the demand and price of houses even more?

Oh, that would be a crappy idea and make the current problem (including spread of covid) much worse.

Yeah.

But people are still saying "well when I was 20 I had to work hard to get where I am blah blah" when it was considerably and verifiably EASIER than it is now.
i guess if you told a black person you know what it's like to be black because you have read about it and studied it--that they would agree you sure do know what it's like to be black!!!

Why don't you just ship boat loads of immigrants into NZ to lower the competitive wages, and raise the demand and price of houses even more?

Oh, that would be a crappy idea and make the current problem (including spread of covid) much worse.

Yeah.
and sacrifice HIS health and wealth.... 🤪

Why is it relevant?

Doesnt change the fact it was easier to buy a house and get a job. Reality is reality.

you really need to pay attention--every store you go into in the US has a help wanted sign and most are giving bonuses.

that is what true REALITY is, not make believe crap you see on CNN:rolleyes:

Do supermarkets pay enough to support a family and save to buy a house?

Might be suitable for some people, but not everyone can afford a low paying job

now who's playing strawman, lol....you stated how much easier it was to get a job in the 70s than today...if you had grown up when and where i did you would know that lots of people had 2 jobs--but since you didn't grow up then and there how would you know what it was like since you didn't experience it-eh?

actually i think you should be taking notes-since a guy who actually grew up poor in the US in 70s is being nice enough to school you on what the REALITY really was---you are welcome.

So you found it hard, doesn't take away that it is harder NOW.

House prices dramatically increased for no corresponding increase in wages.

Cost of living increase for no corresponding increase in wages.

Requirement for college degree increase for no corresponding increase in wages.

Student debts UP.

Doesn't matter how hard YOU found it back then, it was still EASIER to get into a first home and walk into a job.

How does having 2 jobs back your argument of how hard it was to get 1 job?

What was the cost of your first home, and how much cash did you need

i sense a lack of appreciation for the valuable lessons i am being generous to try and teach you for free...if the lessons are to continue you will need to take notes, your memory is obviously not that good and frankly i am getting tired of repeating myself.

btw-my wife and i were both close to 40 when we bought our 1st house, only to have to sell it in 2008 when the stock market crashed and people from all walks of life were getting laid off. we had saved for many years with both of us working to save up down payment, my wife cried when she found out i had been laid off.

btw-max weekly unemployment back in 2008 was $400 a week...if you make $15 a hour it's $600 a week-which is what bezos pays.

my wife and i both consider ourselves blessed to have ended up in the place we are today, it was not a easy road to get here.
