My review of beams
vegan protein that
@The Solution sent me. Posted on fb. Thought ppl might be interested here.
I’m a bit bored on a Monday morning. So thought I’d write up a review of this sample pack of Vegan Protein I got from a buddy. The company is Beam. To my knowledge they’re a newer company in the supplement market.
Anyhow so they carry two flavors in their Vegan Protein Chocolate Brownie and the one I had, Blueberry Muffin. Each serving gives you 100 calories. 20g Protein. .5g Fat and 3g Carbohydrate. Mathematically this comes out to just about 97 calories so things match up pretty well in that respect label wise. Label is also transparent, which in today’s market, is a great thing to see when deciding on a new product. I’ve included photos including the breakdown of protein sources they used as well.
Price is a bit higher than I typically pay but 25 servings for 36$ after discount is very comparable for vegan proteins, which typically do run a little higher than whey blends due to the higher cost of the raw ingredients used.
Years ago when whey alternatives hit the market I tried several of the Vegan options. They were mainly Pea based and to be honest I wasn’t a fan the consistencies were not agreeable and the taste itself did not intrigue me any further. Fast forward to 2020. I’ve been hearing about the lengths Vegan options have come since the earlier days. Lots of excellent reviews. This is the first chance I had to try one and I’m impressed.
Opening the packet you get a typical powder smell but I got a decent scent of the blueberries, and it definitely wasn’t offensive to the nose. I mixed the powder with 8 oz water. You can definitely use other liquids and use higher or lower measures to taste. But if a foam upon mixing in the water, but it settles down very quick. Mixed pretty good, not much sediment stirring around. There was a clump at the bottom of the sides of the cup, but that most likely was me not stirring deep enough. Some protein you just swish the spoon around and it’s mixed, others you do have to do a little work, making sure you get anything that settles to the bottom of the cup. Some hate this, but if you know what to expect up front, it’s never a dealbreaker to me, just 2-3 seconds extra stirring.
The shake was on the thicker side, which is a huge plus for me. Protein flavored water is fine and all but feeling like you’re actually having a shake is definitely something I desire in a shake.
They did an excellent job with the flavor. It’s a nice blueberry taste, not fresh like out of the garden fresh, but way better than a lot of the artificial blueberry tastes that are out there. You also get the muffin aspect, during the sip but more prominent in the aftertaste. And none of that artificial blueberry aftertaste that lasts for hours after. I couldn’t tell the difference that it was a vegan option and not whey based, which definitely shows how far these options have come since I first tried Vegan blends years ago.
Bottom line: great tasting protein that I’d consider in the future if I was looking for a blueberry flavored protein. They did a really nice job that I think Vegans will enjoy and look for but also something that non-vegans will have no problem enjoying as well. The 20g protein is a bit lower than most whey blends but is on par with the average amount in vegan proteins, but in all honesty if you’re choosing a protein because it has 23-25 grams you’re kinda just looking for a reason not to try it. 20 is fine.
