I am not a fan of hyphenated America. Let’s drop the whole black American, Asian American, white American, or whatever. Think how nice it would be if we just called ourselves and each other Americans.

The civil rights movement fought to eliminate segregation and I am watching people self segregate. Doesn’t make sense to me.
I’m not saying I agree or disagree with anything, only if they must do what they do, at least be smart about it. White people get upset because they think they BLM is putting black lives above other lives, or suggesting other lives don’t also matter. By adding “also,” it clears that up. They’re not saying only black lives matter, or matter more, only they they matter too, since they feel that they are being treated as if their lives don’t matter.

I agree that we should all view ourselves as Americans, and that’s it, but both sides, at least the extremes of them, seem eager to not do that. Whether it’s what you describe, or conservatives shouting at everyone they don’t like to “go back where you came from.” Even to Native Americans. Imagine being that dense that you tell Native Americans in America to go back where they came from. It’s like an Onion headline, but it’s real.

Or, one step further than Americans, the Greek philosopher Diogenes is credited with inventing the word “cosmopolitan,” or “citizen of the world.” Granted, he was also a homeless man who masturbated in the market and defended it by saying “if only I could banish hunger so easily by rubbing my belly.”

I’m all about peaceful protests. I can even get behind blocking traffic. I do not however give a **** what the message is once the burning, rioting, looting, and shooting starts.

With this latest Floyd issue they really botched it. They had the entire world on their side. The cops, conservatives, liberals, everyone agreed with them. What happened was dead wrong and change needed to happen. Then they turned into animals and the message was lost. The message shifted and coverage went to the anarchy. Then the white liberals hijacked it and it got even worse. This protest which could have sparked positive change turned into a dumpster fire that as usual let everyone run to their tribe and side up.
But if your blocking traffic in area's that there are no detours for emergency vehicles to go through, we are talking potential life and death situations that go unnoticed.

How do you know the BLM movement hadnt been hijacked by the FBI?

Have you ever heard of COINTELPRO for example?

I think they should change from BLM to Black Lives Also Matter. Not only does the addition of Also shut down the “all lives matter crowd,” it changes the acronym from BLM, which I can’t even pronounce, to BLAM. Which is pronounceable, and catchy. BLAM. Like in comic books. Much more marketable IMO.
I like that, I dig the term "also" fitting in between.

Until Black people are fairly represented in all facets of enforcement and by the system, they need to be heard as a separate group. When white people start saying "all lives matter", it's tone deaf.

Lots of good examples of why people need to stop saying "all lives matter" on the internet. I used to say the same thing, until I realised that it diminished the argument.

Remember, it isnt ONLY black lives matter, the true meaning of the phrase is Black Lives Matter too. Meaning as well as.

In this image, you can clearly see the man on the ground with his hands in the air being a huge threat to other peoples lives. Yeah, the police definitely needed to shoot at him 3 times, hitting him once for this display aggression.

In this story an officer tells a white women she doesnt need to fear cops because they only kill black people: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2017/08/31/us/black-kill-police-georgia.amp.html

Senior officer tells people they ought to shoot more blacks than they do: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/5346864002

I was a police officer, and proud of it. However the US has some serious policing issues right now. Not just a few bad eggs, but serious lack of discipline when drawing a firearm. The go to for US police is to draw their firearm to simply detain somebody. That's crazy to me. In NZ, you dont pull out your firearm unless you have made the conscious decision to shoot. It is not to be used as a deterrent or method of detaining.

Officers have to read aloud their rules of engagement whenever there is a possibility of someone being armed. As soon as any shots are fired, those officers are stood down pending a review to determine if those actions were justified.

since you don't live here i will give you benefit of doubt...the change that has occured in my lifetime has been almost unfathomable. i remember a time when blacks and people of color were vastly under-represented on television, especially in advertisements, seeing someone of color in a advertisement was very rare. politically people of color were so few that they formed bloc's, this is how the black/hispanic caucases came about...if you would have told a black guy back in the day that a dude named obama would win president for 2 terms in a landslide that included many whites you would have been called crazy....turn on tv today and you will see that people of color are hardly under-represented, particularly in comparison to 50 years ago....when i was young black/minority doctors were a rarity, and i doubt many whites would have been their patient.

i guess what i am saying is i have the benefit of having lived long enough to see the vast improvements that have been made over the years...

does more change need to be made, of course....but i just wanted to give perspective on how much change i have seen in my 61 years.

It depends on how you look at it. It comes across as divisive. When some of the problems they address effects all Americans regardless of what ration and then you collectively blame a a skin color of a crime they didnt commit its racism. You dont solve racism by being racist.

This movement should have been people matter, the US Constitution matters, the US Bill of Rights matters and we as Americans want Justice reform when it comes to policing to protect Americans as a whole, as we are all victims of the same crimes and harassment one way or another.

Police arent systematically targeting races here. This isnt a denial that some cops are racist but most of what I see are people not following the rules.

So what you do is address racists on a case by case basis. It has nothing to do with wearing the blue and the illusion most of the good police are targeting people by skin pigment. We can work to improve the police forces as a whole, thats not a problem especially if your not being so politically and racially divisive on the issues.

Keep in mind, he has been a loyal Dump supporter, so I dunno how that necessarily would automatically split the Demican vote.

Im voting for Jo Jorgensen as of now, but I am not loyal to any party and would like to hear what he has to say with both domestic and foreign policy. Id hope he was a minimal government type of guy but I dont know much about him politically.

There is a segment of this population that will vote for him solely on the pigment of his skin. Republicans don’t vote for people based on their skin. They vote for their wallets, freedom, and whomever can provide the best environment for success. Dems tend to vote for feelings and skin color. That is after all why the democrat nominee is busy trying to find a black woman to be his Vice President. Qualifications be damned.

Lol, plenty of people in BOTH parties would 100% vote for someone with their race/ethnicity/gender being the primary factor. You can say you think it's MORE prevalent among the left than the right, but are you really saying NOT ONE republican doesn't want to vote for a black person? Or a woman?

How often do you see black people in NZ? According to this 0.3% come from an African decent and mostly came there during the 90s.

If that number is accurate or close to it, its easy to see how racial injustices on black people are barely a noticeable problem where here in the USA we accumulate millions and millions of interactions over the years.

I cant assume they all voted for him because of the color of the skin. I dont know how this could be truly measured. I would hope that the majority voted for him because of his message (which was nothing but a bunch of lies, LOL) and political leanings rather than because he was half black, and half Dick Cheney. If they did, they have all have personal issues with elements of racism.

I work overseas and have travelled enough in last 15 years to fill up 3 of the large passports. The USA is by far the least racist place on earth. It’s not even close. Middle East and Asia top the list. They judge people all the time based on skin color. They have a multi billion dollar cosmetic industry dedicated to skin whitening. The Mideast would own slaves if they could get away with it. I am sure of it. Those racist bastards pay people differently depending on where they come from.

thebigt knows what I am talking about here.

And as for BLM I have to ask because they have been around for a couple years now and have taken in millions of dollars. What have they changed? What policies have they put in place to lift the black man up? What institutions have they built for job training, drug rehabilitation centers, employment assistance, or daycare system so the depressed portion of the population that tends to have police interactions are, you know, not having police interactions?

Well, first you can respond to his post any way you feel, if you want me to play by your rules Ill hook my PC up remotely and you can post for me. Or do you want my password and save the trouble?

Its entirely relevant, my point is when you have a situation that doesnt exist in your country and you see another where millions of interactions occur, its not fair to assume the police in my country are systematically racist. Out of millions of interactions between police and race individual incidents pop up that are not exemplary of our policing system as a whole.

I'm not saying you can't post what you want... I'm saying why bother quoting him if you're not going to address his point?

And I get what you are TRYING to say, that when you have more interactions, eventually some of them, a very small minority of them, are going to be f**ked up, and that, given a small sample size as is present in other countries, you may not see them pop up nearly as often, if at all.

But the issue isn't saying that "other places would have the same problem if they had as large a sample size," but in seeing how we can help to stop it from happening at all, and also to ensure that, if it does happen, the people responsible are held accountable for their actions.

Surely we can agree on that?

i was fortunate to have visited over 40 different countries while in the navy-did nato/west pac/med cruises....ended up living in PI for 7 years after i got out of navy. what you say is very true-filipino's would sign what amounted to indentured servant papers to work in middle east countries as maids/servants back in the 80's, and from talking with those who had come back they were treated very badly.

skin color is a status in asia and middle east, those with darker skin are considered peasants.

there was no safety net in PI back then, it was common to see children with missing limbs selling cigarettes and other goods out of a box with string behind their neck holding it up-at night you would see them sleeping on the streets....the dying without money would be carried to hospital and left to die and then be collected for burial.

after i returned to the states i realized how fortunate i was to be a AMERICAN and why people from all countries of the earth want to come here and become AMERICANS. @Jiigzz in 2010 there were very close to 20,000 new zealand americans.

after all my travels i realized that with all of our faults the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is the greatest country on earth...

btw- when my ship was headed for a port call in mombassa, kenya all the blacks on board were very excited--but the kenyan's thought they were 'jive turkeys' that is exactly what the kenyan's called american blacks.

What I have to also think is, if the race in 2008 was Ben Carlson vs Hitlery, would he have gotten the same support from the same black people that voted for Obobo?

These things probably cant be answered but its something to think about.

I do a lot of work in Africa. They do not think highly of our black populace.

One thing is for sure. Whenever I come back and hit the ground I always get an overwhelming urge to kiss the ground.

Maybe if our youngsters would have to do a couple years working overseas somewhere or doing some sort of volunteer service it would change a lot of things here. These kids simply don’t know how good they have it.

in comparison bill clinton who was VERY popular among black voters in 86 got 80% of black votes versus 95% for obama in 2006...draw your own conclusions.

navy corpman were called pecker checkers back in the day.

i remember going to affees enlistment station for physical...they had around 30 of us line up and strip down while a corpman came and checked balls. seriously, being on a ship back then was very close to being in prison. showers held 20-30 at a time in open space-often times we would be out to sea for 8-9 months at a time---not the life for snowflakes...

Doesn't every physical involve checking your balls? Including routine sports physicals? Granted, it's only one person at a time though.

Doesn't every physical involve checking your balls? Including routine sports physicals? Granted, it's only one person at a time though.

I can understand why a lot of people don’t want gays the military.
they used to have masters at arms that went thru berthing quarters all night...if they caught 2 guys in a rack together it was a instant court martial.

What’s the saying?: 60 sailors went out to sea, 30 couples came back home...

i'm sure there had to be gays out of over 6000 guys on board the ike, but they kept it hidden-there would have been blanket parties for openly gays back then. homosexuality was seriously not condoned!!!!

i had to laugh when the higher ups acted surprised when the 1st cruise with females on board came back with over half of the females pregnant...

that is why i said i would like to see today's youth to go thru SAME bootcamp i went thru, lol.

just kidding, it wouldn't be fair to them. my generation grew up under completely different circumstances raised by parents that went through ww2 and korea.

I wouldn’t trade my experience for anything. It was hard, but I owe a lot to them drill sergeants. I went to college but if anyone ever asks where I graduated from I always say Ft Benning.

my company was one of the 1st to go thru boot camp as volunteers. unfortunately the navy had just switched over from crackerjacks to that horrible double breasted jacket, it wasn't until my last year that they switched back to the crackerjacks....i was always envious of the marine dress blues-they had the best uniforms in the military, imo.

but at least we had better food than you army guys...but not as good as air force-i once had a emergency mac flight off ship and ended up in a layover at air force base in fairbanks alaska---those sob's ate off real china and food was restaurant quality.

Air Force does it right. I went to a remote base in Niger. I am talking about hole in the wall. They had a mess tent and they imported a chef from Italy named Gio that did all the cooking. I kid you not I would pay to go to that place if it was a restaurant. Everything had presentation and was mouth watering amazing. I always look forward to getting put on air bases. Great accommodations, no room sharing, good food, and they have good gyms and mwr facilities. I’ve been on some army bases where they are using poles that were set in buckets of concrete for gym equipment.

I don’t think there is a soldier or marine that ever ETSs and doesn’t utter the phrase: I should have went Air Force.
