before this covid crap started if someone came into the hospital where you work coughing and sneezing would they have been asked to wear a mask to prevent spreading to others?
Yup, but such people are more willing participants to adhere to the rules because they are acutely feeling symptoms, and they want to be treated. In the beginning stages of this, there was more disbelief, and the true reality didn’t sink in until later. The suggestion of masks, along with guidelines/tips to make them optimally effective on both parts would have been a nice idea though.

Some of it may have been an effort to keep masks available for frontline workers as other suggested. More in regard to the surgical masks (that were also running scarce) than N-95’s it seems. The majority of people I see out and about have the same mask I have, which is a hospital supplied surgical mask- same we have always used.

On the other hand, I have never seen the green 3M N95 mask on anybody out in the public. This is the only mask we use use, and is the one you most often see on healthcare workers on the news etc..

Alternative masks/scarfs certainly could have been addressed sooner than they were..

I agree with you; we should’ve locked down earlier. What I think is most interesting is South Korea didn’t make it a law to stay home because their people seem to trust their government more. To be completely honest, I don’t think our government is to blame for most of what we are experiencing. We, the people, are to blame for all of this. Our self righteous attitudes and so-called rights and freedom (just lulz on the definition of freedom) are to blame for the epidemic in America. The man who got on a plane to visit his parents while waiting for his COVID-19 test results is to blame. And our government (both sides) have to deal a population of people that are stuck to their political side as opposed to seeing individual issues for what they are (again, both sides). Lastly, all of these are just thoughts and I’m sure not well-articulated since I’m posting this between rounds of Fortnite with my kids! lol

P.S. The freedom argument drives me crazy, btw. I’ve been in plenty of situations in my life where freedom was truly regulated (Army Basic Training for example) and what we have in the US as a regular citizen is an overabundance of “freedom”. We are a nation of spoiled brats.
Finally someone saying the real stuff lol! The PEOPLE are to blame. The AMERICANS are to blame. Look at what’s happening in the last few days... thousands and thousands of fucking idiots storming the streets... thousands of idiots at the beach... I’m not blaming all of the Americans of course because there is some very smart people there but there’s a certain minority that is ruining it all of you guys and whatever could’ve been done would still have been ruined somehow by your own people. reality is you guys just can’t fucking listen to anything... there’s a reason the USA is the most infected place in the world and as much as some want to blame trump for that and he clearly as a part in it, the people are the main reason.

If I bought a quarter cow id take it to my cousin restruant, I've seen that kid do quarter veal, and whole pigs. He actually enjoys it lol
I highly recommend you do this. I live in a rural area with lots of farms around and I am convinced a shortage of meat is coming. and what meat is available is going to be VERY expensive. like I said I have 2 full sized deep freezers packed to the gills not counting my refrigerator freezer.

I wish I could do this, but we don’t even have room to store that much meat! I may be eating more fish, which I would kind of like to do anyway..

I’ve been planning to do this. How much *should* a deep freezer cost though? I don’t know what prices are inflated now.

I got a decent stand up Freezer for $50 on Facebook Marketplace
Retails for $300 (He asked $100, I offered $50) It was full of frost.
That usually meant it was stuffed too full or things put in that are warm still.

It works great for us.

I can't see price gauging a fridge... only weights.
Just don't tell them you plan on lifting it repeatedly.... :p

These herds of people protesting without masks are happening everywhere and it‘s just making things worse while showcasing their ignorance. It’s happening here in Maine too because they are upset that the governor has extended the stay at home “safe” order until June 1st. The only changes are that some drive in movie theaters, hair salons, and car dealerships etc, will be able to open under strict guidelines. Bottom line, it’s just another month, then “phase 2” of reopening will take place. Just shut up and stay the f*ck home (it’s not like we are all quarantined to our house) and be thankful that we are being spared of reckless action.

The original stay at home order went into place here before we had a big problem, which is how things should be done. Why wait for the inevitable to happen and then take action. So now people in this state look at our low numbers and don’t think there is any problem. We have a big tourist season here in the summer, and people are concerned about losing their business. While that may be true, we can’t be letting people into our state from hotspots like Massachusetts, or anywhere for that matter. It would make for a completely different landscape in terms of our numbers and ability to treat people.

Our governor is prioritizing the health of the people in our state, and our healthcare system/workers rather than our economy. Seems like the obvious choice to me. The people doing all the complaining/protesting don’t consider the significant burden it places on the hospitals and staff when COVID admissions shoot up even a little bit.

How are y’all grocery shopping? Anyone using Instacart or Walmart pickup? Or just maintaining social distancing at grocery stores and avoiding the pigs? 😂

I haven’t gone much, as my GF works at a supermarket as her second job. She usually just brings home some food for us after her shift. Other than that, I have not used any of those online options. The supermarket my GF works at always did offer pickup orders, but did away with it after COVID due to the reduced variety of product. I guess they didn’t want to deal with people being picky.

I did just go yesterday though, and it was a smooth experience with everyone being quite courteous in regard to social distancing. Everyone in the store had a mask on, and some employees (including my GF) choose to wear face shields instead for comfort reasons. Since I hadn’t been in the store for weeks, it was odd to see everything in place with the plexiglass at the registers, one direction aisles, and PPE for employees. It’s time like these I sit back and think to myself how strange all of this really is.

In terms of the police, I don’t know how things are going elsewhere, but they aren’t actively on the hunt for people defying stay at home orders or doing nonessential activities. I did hear about them breaking up some people attempting to have a house party in my town tonight though. Neighbors put a stop to that real quick...haha

I prefer to call it "hunting and foraging in an urban setting"... while using a horrible fake Ausie accent that particularly annoys my wife on occasion... it's also referred to as "sport gathering".

We avoid the cereal aisle because I'm a grown child there.
The check out people know us well. We put a show on twice a month...

I recall catching my wife off guard in the check out. I turned to her and said, "What did the counselor say!" "What did the counselor say.", since they know me, they caught the joke right away, but she was like, wtf, lol.

Yeah, grocery store visits are fun. Not so much with the mask though, and now I do it alone so not as fun...
I took a photo of our food on the conveyer to text her, and the check-out and bagging person photobombed me.
That was cool. :D

I haven’t been in weeks; I’ve done Instacart delivery and Walmart pickup a few times. Honestly, virus aside, it will probably be my new normal to save time and energy when things are back to “normal” or whatever we’re going to call it.

Yeah, I looked into deep freezers and all sold out in my area. This whole thing really killed my faith in my fellow humans.
a lot of people saw this coming....I see a shortage of lots of things before this is over. I suggest you stock up on what is still available--there are sites that sell ready to eat pouches of food that have long storage life, they have been popular with the doomsday crowd for awhile now--they actually aren't to bad and it beats dumpster diving...better hurry though I've heard those ready to eat pouches are going fast.

Yeah, I need to do that. I hate this. I saw it coming too, but I chose not to do it out of belief humans would do the right thing. They let me down again.

Humans have a tendency to suck. The Prisoners Dilemma perfectly sums up our propensity for selfishness.
I pity those who don't own a gun, with lots of ammo...

Up until this point, I have refused to act opportunistically. We haven’t bought any guns or tons of ammo either. It might get us killed one day, but I don’t believe this virus will be the end of us.

And now a word from the deadly Coronavirus.
I made a deadlier more contagious friend to keep you company...

Just as many of us have suspected/anticipated, the current optimism for an effective vaccine potentially by January 2021 seems virtually impossible. Even if they fast track something- we know it still won’t be ready by January, and the efficacy will be sub-par and short lived. We will also have no idea what the long term side effects could be.

Perhaps a better approach would be to develop effective antiviral(s) that have low side effects. Remdesivir seems promising, but not everyone would be a candidate due to the side effects like renal impairment and cardiac arrhythmia risks etc.

We know the virus can’t survive more than a few days without hosts. If massive herds or continents of people were placed on a similar yet safer antiviral(s) at the same time (NO TRAVELING beyond borders allowed), we could theoretically eradicate this. Easier said than done, but it’s going to require something more outside the box to get this shyt out of our lives IMO..

I have no faith in effective vaccine being developed, even the flu shot is hit or miss depending on if they guessed the right strain. my guess is that even if every person in the world were given a flu shot people would still get the flu, I see this being more of the same but even worse.

I agree ricky, antivirals are going to be the answer.

What about Diamox often used for altitude sickness and save mountain climbers from pulmonary edema?
That would go a long way to treat the symptoms of critical patients lungs filling with fluid no?

My wife takes it for her PTC.

I'd be willing to wager, NY is doing something right, and some of the rest of the country is dragging the death rate up.
I wonder what states would be doing that? (Florida, you're one)

Not that I disagree with what you’re saying, but I also think they just peaked earlier because of the amount of people in close proximity basically “getting it over with” faster (not that it’s over).
