The Unofficial Ice Cream thread

for 30+ flavors you would think there is more then a "few" that are worth the purchase.

PB World, Cinnamon Buns, Chubby Hubby

Eh, when a brand mass produces and has such a wide variety you'd expect a good bit of misses tho

I feel a lot less let down on a bad $4 pint than anything more than that lol.

Cherry Garcia is everywhere.
In the stores here with only 3 B&J flavour offerings it is always one of the 3.

Little G's Puppy Chow:

Peanut Butter ice cream with chocolate peanut butter fudge swirl and puppy chow pieces"

Invalid Link Removed

The creaminess and the slight salty aftertaste is on point. I would have to say this is one of my favorite bases off her line. Maple & Brown Butter are unique and up there. Much better then the vanilla bean and chocolate in her base pints.

Invalid Link Removed

The Puppy chow pieces. Was there ever a spoonful that did not have any? No. Did they pack a ton of flavor and crunch? Yes. Was there anything missing? Yeah just a touch. The slight sugary aftertaste on puppy chow could of been stronger. A few of the pieces started to fade in flavor (slightly stale).

The real star of the show that swirl. When you strike a good swirl on a Little G pint it is gold. Just like Fudge Brownie the fudge swirl has an incredible amount of chocolate flavor. Combine that with a PB Flavor to compliment the base this was stellar. Not to mention half my pint was a swirl so it was like I was eating globs of Peanut Butter Fudge.

My wife loves "Rocky Road" from Häagen-Dazs[SUP]®[/SUP] so when it is on sale, I stock up.

New Little G Flavors just came in

Invalid Link Removed

Asked them to replace easter egg (malted chocolate base with store bought kit kats, twix, heath bars and other candy) with cowboy cookie..
Guess they did not read my email or comment on my order LOL

I wonder what those kids concocted for Aprils ss flavors

last year they had cinnatopia for a flavor (the good cinnatopia, this year they downgraded it)

Triple chocolate cheerio chimp

and they have a breakfast flavor as well with like french toast (i was supposed to get it but they sent me the wrong flavor)

Without knowing more details, the apple frosting caramel crackers sounds like the winner with honeycomb brittle being the only other one I'd show interest in.

*note, this is just based on theoreticals, as I will not be paying for these lol

Little G's Go Banana's
Grade: B-
Invalid Link Removed

"Brown butter ice cream with banana bread chunks, candied walnuts, and mini chocolate chips."

Invalid Link Removed

Brown Butter Ice cream is good just like in cowboy cookie. Provides a nice rich buttery aftertaste. Does not overpower the mix ins

Invalid Link Removed

Ridiculous amount of chocolate chips in every single bite. Tons of candied walnuts which are very dense. They pack a nice crunch factor. I only got one piece of banana bread hence the deduction in score. Incredibly moist and packed a long lasting banana bread aftertaste.

The buttered popcorn ice cream just seems to be lacking that butter presence. While this is better then the Ample Hill's base it could have a stronger. It reminded me of the vanilla bean with a subtle butter flavor to it.

Invalid Link Removed

In each and every bite from top to bottom you do not miss a mix-in. I found that the chocolate and nougat were the leading contenders in this pint. I got hints of peanut butter and caramel candies that reminded me of mini milky ways. The amount of flavors really takes over and overpowers the base. For those who love mix-ins you are really in for a treat here!

Tried the top 2, is that a new HD? Looks like the same ones I've had here for over a year now just in packs of 3 mini cups?

Chocolate Oreo was meh.
Really wish Oreo was hooked up with a better company for their ice cream varieties, or packed in enough Oreos to bring it up a notch.

Coconut Turtles were good, #2 spot for me behind the Pecan edition

So, I've now gotten through 3 of the new enlightened flavors:

Bananas foster: mild banana flavor (but more realistic vs the typical fake, runts type) and tons of caramel swirl. Very solid if you like banana flavors.

Cookie dough: unreal base that is super creamy and sweet, paired with tons of chunks of legit cookie dough. How they kept this low cal is a mystery to me cuz it's as good or better than most full cal cccd.

Fudge brownie: a very nice dark chocolate base, again super creamy and rich, similar to the cccd there's a ton of brownie chunks which are soft and chewy and plentiful.

Frankly, all 3 flavors were top notch and the bottom two especially were on par or better than most full cals.

I don't know how enlightened does it with the creaminess, richness, and mix ins to keep these lower cal but they're downright amazing.

Ughhhhh I want Enlightened!

Let's just hope we don't find out down the road that they really were full cal all along LOL

In before class action lawsuit involving deceitful labeling! I'm also jealous you have Enlightened in your area. I'm still getting through all of the Halo Top flavors. Just had my first bad experience - cookies and cream. It was AWFUL

Why did you think it was awful? To me, it was unremarkable, but not bad. It was just boring. No cookies at all; just tiny flecks throughout the entire pint of vanilla lol.

Mine tasted like straight chemicals. I don't have a fancy palate at all, but I just could not stomach it. Tried it three separate times (same pint, though), and had to throw the rest away. I've had red velvet, cookie dough, mint chip, bday cake, pb cup, oatmeal cookie, s'mores, and pistachio and have liked every one (some more than others of course).

Interesting.

That's how I felt with the chocolate almond crunch. It just tasted horrid, but none of my other pints/flavors ever had. Obviously some flavors I didn't care for, but none had ever tasted bad aside from it. Wondering if we just got bad pints...

Huh my chocolate almond wasn't bad but def not a but again for me. Cnc tho I totally agree it has no cookies but the two I've had were basically just a sweet cream flavor. Boring but still decent. Chemically they were not tho... sounds like bad pints.

As for the enlightened, they're good enough even if they were slightly below normal cals (say 150 cals/srv) they'd still totally be worth it. They're that good.

Clementines Tommy's Toffee Butter Brickle
Grade: B
Invalid Link Removed

"Our own handmade toffee ice cream blended with Bissinger's English toffee bits. A sweet taste of English tradition."

Invalid Link Removed

The consistency almost reminded me of custard with how thick it was. The flavor you got from the toffee was so pure of brown sugar and butter that is was melting on my mouth with each and every spoonful

Invalid Link Removed

The English Toffee Bits look like a large shattered toffee piece. They are extremely crunchy, have a lot of flavor, and pack a bite! English toffee, which is a very buttery toffee often made with almonds. The second you take the first bite of the mix-ins you can taste the crunch and almond aftertaste.

Clementines has their ice cream base game ON POINT

Clementines Salted Crack Caramel:

"Rich caramel, sea salt, vanilla, and our scratch made cracker candy pieces"

Invalid Link Removed

Have you ever cracked into a Ghirardelli Chocolate square with a caramel filling? That is exactly what this base provides. The density of the ice cream continues to shine to a similar structure of custard.

Invalid Link Removed

Crack Cookies are saltine based crackers coated with butter and sugar. When you combine the sweet caramel flavor you also get the salty crack cookie which is a perfect combination for those who love the sweet and salty combo. Some of the crack cookies were literally 1" in diameter. Good pint!

Where do yall get these fancy ice creams? I dont have anything like that locally. Pretty much just blue bell and turner here....sigh.

They buy online, it's expensive as hell, but can be worth it to buy every once in a while. You don't realize how crappy stuff like blue bell is until you've had really good ice cream

Bingo
The quality of brands like salt and straw, clementines, little G, ample hills etc are light years above buying grocery stuff like mass produced Ben and jerrys or blue bell

It's like comparing a burger from McDonald's to one from a top end restaurant. Yes you pay a bit more for quality and a better burger instead of dethawed mass produced meat

Clementines from their website
Salt and straw from their website
Ample hills you can get on amazon or a lot more flavors on their website
Little G on goldbely . I have a code I can give you for a discount

I don't see "light years" between but those are some of the mix-in winners.

I wouldn't give larger companies a strike for the actual ice cream base though. As long as real cream is being used, they have a lot more money invested into flavouring and can stand their ground.

B&J do killer swirls, and although some of their bases are let-downs (looking at you Cheesecakes) they have some great ones too.

The new Haagen Dazs line really shows off their talent for making a stellar ice cream base. Whiskey Chocolate Truffle is an easy A from me, really good, Irish Cream now being my #2

But these smaller companies are definitely killing it for mix-ins to such an extent that they are the creators of many of my top pints.

But then the real deciding factor... I can find B&J for half the price of those sometimes.

I'd probably buy a healthy mix of both if I was in the US

If you think B and J does good swirls you have yet to experience a good little G or salt and straw swirl

It's not even close quality and size wise

I mean ... lettuce be real

Your also missing out these companies don't use mass produced mix ins. They are all hand made . Greater quality requires more time and money.

Oh I know, that's why I've had no issue shelling out $10CDN per Graeters pint in the past when I'm in that mood

Graeters is not known for swirl. A lot of their flavors do not even have them. They are known for Signature chocolate chips.
I hope you really get to try S&S, or Little G's. Some of their flavors are so good its crazy. Once you experience it, you are like to hell with this mass produced stuff haha. Did you never take up Gino on some of those Ample Hills Flavors?

it is like when LLN told me to try Paulie Gee's in Columbus. I don't even dare touch any pizza places in erie anymore. The quality is just so subpar compared to high quality neopolitan NY style pizza.

I tried them thanks to Gino, but I'm glad I'm not local to these offerings sometimes just for my wallet's sake.

Some of you guys must spend near $1000 per year on pints.

I love ice cream, but also having paid my bills lol

I value eating good food, of course bills always come first. I rather spend the extra $$ towards something of a higher quality then indulge in stuff from my grocery store to get 5-6/10 pints that are lackluster.

Nothing worse....
Seems to be a nationwide issue .. a lot of people are getting no dry ice and melted pints

Clementine's Maple Bourbon
Invalid Link Removed
Grade: B+

"Rebel Yell bourbon, maple syrup, sea salt, and vanilla with our salted candied pecans swirled in"

Invalid Link Removed

The density, creaminess, and thickness resembles almost that of custard. The Maple flavor was just leaps and bounds above any other maple I have ever tried. I had a friend from Canada who sent me Canadian maple syrup before, and I almost though this pint was infused with it. Driven2lift

Invalid Link Removed

The flavor almost reminded me of Salt & Straw's candied pecans I had in Sweet Potato Casserole. The perfect blend of cinnamon and sugar on top of the crunchy pecans. I really enjoyed these pecans,

Now that sounds amazing.

Best S'mores on the market IMO. When you factor the homemade s'mores bar and that custard marshmallow base.. Just ridiculous good.
A lot like 7-11 due to the massive swirls and the graham base (marshmallow/choc swirls)

This is how I break it down..
Clementines > Wegmans for marshmallow base

Graham Cracker Base:
7-11 >> Handels >>> gelato fiasco (Graham base)

Ben and jerrys s'mores with this chocolate base is garbage

^will try

Haven't seen a banana from them before, I'm guessing it may be a thing though

If so, good?

they bring it out every year. Just like strawberry chocolate chip (for March/April). It is decent at best. Raspberry chocolate chip is still their best IMO for basic chocolate chip flavor.
Buckeye, CnC, Cheese crown of course top dogs on the lineup as always.
