Jim's Powerlifting Training

Oh yeah, well I sat at my house and read updates on the competition while I wished I could be there.

I would've tried to bring the posters and get them signed lol.

You know as awesome as the show was (absolutely better than I even expected, like watching WSM live) what I'd have liked more then anything is to get to meet Kaz. Always been an idol.

Wasn't he at the SBD booth at the beginning of each day?

It's amazing to me his V taper and arms in his sixties. Put of control.

Probably but I didn't know that and I was handling from first thing Friday and we slept in Sat some (drove all night Thurs to make 9am weighins Fri). And she made Finals today so everything has been bent around continuing to prep her for the afternoon ahead. Had WAY less time than I expected honestly. But she's minimum 4th best 140lb class woman in the world now and gunning for best in the world this afternoon!

He looks bigger and more solid in person even than when you see him on IG and such. Just a tank.

DE Bench

Comp. Bench: 85kg x 3 x 9

CG Pause Bench (3 count): work to 100kg x 2

Would've gone heavier but have been having some discomfort in my left shoulder for the last two days so I shut it down. Wasn't pain, but it was like it was catching on something during the unrack and when holding at the top.

NG Pullups: (normal) BW x 10 (wide) BW x 7 (close) BW x 8

Banded Ext. Rotation: 2 rounds of: (oh) orange x 15 (uh) orange x 12

Banded Int. Rotation: Orange x 15 (oh)

Then some LAX ball mashing and some xwifing with the circus DB. Shoulder felt better after that and I was able to bench the bar and do pullaparts without any "catching". I'm deloading this week (which really just means no max effort singles) and I'm taking the whole week off which will give me more time each day to focus on soft tissue work.

3 weeks.

Dude. Jim. My girl made it to the finals on Sunday. 3rd best lightweight woman in the world. Here she is on the main stage after Shaw loaded a 555 stone w a hurt hammy (with yours truly in the foreground):

Met Kaz back there. Shaw, Vytautas, Big Z, Mateuz, Thor, Krzysztof, Dimitar, Pritchett, Hall were all milling about with arms length. And Eddie Hall stayed around my entire time in the pit backstage as he was handling a big blonde heavyweight gal from England.

It was so weird and awesome; it didn't feel like a fanboy thing. He's so cool and casual and we were right there doing the same thing: hanging out handling our respective athletes. Probably helped that we're about same age. Watched him get adjusted after Mark Henry while Jess was getting stretched out.

I've never even done a strongman comp and he's the worlds greatest deadlifter, and there we are shoulder to shoulder just hanging out doing the same thing lol. Probably my favorite strongman now besides Shaw.

Damn, that sounds awesome.....

I was really happy to see the way Lalas came back, it's good to see him back in good form. He's always been one of my favorite strongmen (probably because he isn't a giant). Hopefully, he continues to be able to compete at this level.

Never been a huge Shaw fan, personally. Although he does seem like a genuinely cool guy, it's just hard to relate to a 6'8" 400# dude when I'm not even 6' tall.

Big Hafthor fan though, probably because he's from Iceland and trains with Magnus. Magnus is the GOAT.

Deload 'ME' Lower

Comp Squat (beltless): 95kg x 1 x 3

SSB Pause Squat: work to 148kg x 3

GHR: BW x 12, 8

HLR: BW x 8 x 3

DB tempering of the shoulder. Used the SSB today because that left shoulder hurt. Pretty sure I busted that knot up yesterday and it's just sore. Felt better after some tempering, also tempered the pec tie in as well.

Lalas was always my fav for same reason! He looked jacked AF and was brutally strong this weekend.

As for Magnus...

My advice is if you can get the time next year and you wanna see some legit strongman action, it's your absolute best bang for buck. WSM is always in random international cities it seems and expo tickets are only $10 a day ordered in advance in a cheap centralized location in the US. Only money you'll really spend is on the travel and hotel, which there are several within walking distance.

Plus all the amateur strongmen battling it out for their pro card, and the XPC, and the USAPL meet.

We really wanted to go this year but couldn't get anyone to watch the dogs for the weekend.

WSM is more of a TV show than a strongman competition so there is all the BS associated with that. The only thing about the Arnold is that they don't do a head to head stone run, which is a great event to watch.

The amateur men and the ladies did a stone over bar for reps in 60 sec head to head this year on Sunday. They used those new plate-loaded smooth stones of steel and banned tacky and it basically crucified everyone. Most of the heavyweights zeroed the event.

I saw that on some of the videos floating around.

I know they're trying to use sponsor equipment and **** like that, but come on.

The steel is slick, so there is no way chalk is going to help people hold on to any kind of significant weight.

Ridiculous.

Deadlift bar from Rogue? Price looks solid, and specs are comparable to the TDB (and it comes in bare steel!)

Not sure if it's going to be as dependable though....

I will say about the stones of steel is that it eliminates variations between individual stones: no differences in texture or weight distribution or chipping. But I watched guys who absolutely destroyed a 730lb 60ft frame run with biceps as big as a melon zero a 375 stone.

The Rogue log sucked too: the grip is fatter and perhaps narrower. Everyone did far worse than training. It seemed pretty nice but it is tougher than any log I've seen.

They sent Clint Darden a Rogue power bar and it rusted immediately since he lives by the ocean in that warm salty climate. But he said it had good knurling and performed well if you don't mind the rust. And you're not by the ocean.

Yeah, that's true with the stone but the weight isn't going to be as high because you can't use the same equipment.

The Arnold is all about big weights catching the crowds eye, so that stone doesn't make sense for them.

The barbells are supposed to be high quality (not the deadlift bar specifically, as its new). I worry about that with raw steel barbells some as Houston is humid (bayou city and whatnot), but don't really mind a little rust.

My TPB is actually pretty rusty, and it doesn't really bother me.

May have to bite the bullet on it whenever I go to buy a deadlift bar. I like the patina that raw barbells get over time (I have an old York split sleeve oly bar that is a wonderful shade of brown) and had already been planning a duffalo bar and apollons axle purchase, and they are both raw steel finish....

Chrome finish is freakin dangerously slick too. Had one fall off of my back with 300# of band tension, I was seriously lucky nothing happened.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of chrome at all.

Raw steel is the best finish IMO, zinc isn't bad though. I'm pretty sure zinc is the finish on all of the buddy capps bars.

Was hoping someone here had more experience with some of the Rogue bars for a better idea of quality.

Crystal has an Ohio power bar. She keeps it at home and only uses it occasionally, but I can ask. This sounds really bad, but I don't think I could spot the difference between raw steel and zinc coated.

NomZ may have some rogue bar experience? I vaguely remember seeing Ohio bar in his log.
He's one of those crossfit guys, so he's probably a hyoooge rogue fanboy lol.

If it was black zinc you probably could.

There isn't a huge difference, raw steel just "feels" a little better in the hands.

Pretty positive my gym bought the rogue tx squat bar knock off a while back. I should know considering i squat with it all the friggin time but i never really pay attention. I see the 55lb bar and say ok lets go. Ill check it out tomorrow for ya. But, if it is like i think it is, it's good quality and I haven't had any issues with it at all. They bought it before that meet in Sept and it looks damn near new still.

I don't think they sell a 25kg bar right now.

You may very well have a legit TSB.

This may all be for naught anyway, as I may just go ahead and get the TDB when the time comes so that I can ultimately have all 3 of them.

Hell, maybe I should get rid of the power bar and get a legit bench bar too.

Actually, maybe not lol.

Hmm. I'll report back tomorrow.

Rogue Ohio Bar seems stiffer than a Texas PowerBar, with sharper knurling too.

The black zinc finishes wears off FYI.

My TPB finish has been wearing off around where we grip it, now it is a nice brown color.

You like the Ohio Bar? How do you think it will hold up over time?

I didnt wake up to go in this morning Jim. I'll be going in tomorrow AM though so I'll check for ya then.

Deload bench today.

Didn't get **** done. Shoulder felt great, until I tried to do anything. Hurts like a son of a bitch now, worked up to 70kg and it hurt on every rep.

Tried CG since it didn't hurt last time, but that hurt too.

Did some rowing and face pulls, had some pain with some of the reps on the face pulls too.

Then rolled, hung from the chin up bar, etc. Nothing seemed to help.

Hopefully, I can figure it out in the next 2 weeks. If not, I'll just see what I got on meet day I guess.

No idea what happened. Didn't have anything happen, felt great on the last ME Upper session and then 2 days later when I went to do back work it started up on pullaparts, of all things.

If my shoulders hurt, facepulls hurt. Weird.

My go-to would be stretch lats, increase thoracic mobility, and butter knife graston.

You try compression with a knee wrap? There's a mobilitywod shoulder set I saw with smelly and super D where you lay on your back with your elbow up bent at 90 and have your wife put all her weight on the elbow and put you through external rotation. I've had good success with a few people doing that.

Rolled the lats some today, and opened the thoracic up some on the GHD. Never tried graston on myself, but its actually the back of my shoulder so I'm not sure I'd be able to reach it.

I did the bowtie on Sunday/Monday. Not sure if it helped tbh, will probably continue doing it either way.

I'm having a hard time envisioning that, will try to find the video tonight.

You can do the wrap the way they used to do it as well, that still works great. The key is to get as close to the neck and lat as you can, don't just get arm/delt.

Same thing, it's silver where we grip it.

Ohio Bar is good, I'd get one if I was in the market for a general training bar similar to TPB. I think it was last just as long.

That may seal it for me.

Saw a lot of good reviews on the rogue bars over at the "other" forum, thinking this deadlift bar may be a winner.

You're right, Jim. It's a legit TSB.

Didn't see they had the deadlift bar till Smelly posted about it, Rogue making waves. Ohio Bar is definitely a good stiff bar though.

Our TSB is bent pretty good and I still prefer it to the TPB for squatting. It actually always feels heavier w the same weight total but I find it easier to be tighter on it.

Maybe they'll make a squat bar soon.

How in the hell did you guys bend a TSB?

Happy belated birthday man.

Seeing a guy squat seven plates in person with a power bar, I say give me the squat bar. I've used the 60-65lb bulldog squat bar, Apparently that's cheaper than a mastodon or iron wolf bar and it holds up under very big weights.
