Jim's Powerlifting Training

I've done reverse band squat on a TPB with 700, same with deads, sure it bends and has whip, but nothing permanent.

I bet that TSB got bent from a bail or something stupid like someone did rack pulls.

TSB hates my upper back, I rather squat with a thin bar and no knurling...

Seeing a guy squat seven plates in person with a power bar, I say give me the squat bar. I've used the 60-65lb bulldog squat bar, Apparently that's cheaper than a mastodon or iron wolf bar and it holds up under very big weights.

Ultimately, I may look at getting one of those types of squat bars.

Squat bar is one of the last things I plan on getting, but still.

I've only used a TSB a few times, mostly in competition.

Can't say I notice much different, but I don't squat the big boy weights yet either.

Unless you compete north of 90kg, or SPF, you probably won't use a TSB.

USAPL certainly never will. UPSA uses it for 90kg and up. Not sure about RPS, we don't have that here.

I'm pretty sure APF uses the specialty bars for all 3.

I also have only completed below the 90kg class once, right after the injury lol.

They do. The TSB will some bend when it's really loaded, but minimal whip and it's not permanent (as been already said).

I've only done USPA and SPF meets at 100 and 110kg so it's all I've ever used at comp, hence using it in meet prep.

And you're right, apparently some douche had never used wraps and walked out only 455 (more than he could squat) w no safeties and got scurred. Dumped a brand new TSB over 5 ft to the floor and screwed it forever.

Even good bars don't tolerate stupid.

Worked up to 100kg x 2 on squat today to get some speed work in.

Had to shut it down after the first set because the shoulder was screaming at that weight.

Felt good before, and with the lighter weights. Spent a good 45 minutes tempering, mobilizing, etc. No dice.

Did some sets of 2 on the belt squat, GHR, and 1 set of RH and shut it down.

2 weeks......

Hoping it's just a strain. Still don't know what I did, but its not the time to push it.

Shutting training down and just focusing on assistance that won't cause any discomfort.

Hoping it'll figure itself out by meet day.

Was planning openers this week, really just to get an idea on squat but I'll just open at 340 and go from there I think.

Worked to my bench opener today on the Swiss bar, only had a little discomfort with the handoff.

Swiss Bar: 106kg x 1

-nice and easy

CG UH Pulldown: 90 x 15 x 3

- really focused on the stretch at the top

Fat Bar Pushdown: 60 x 12 x 2

Six ways: 7 x nope
High Lateral Raise: 7 x 15 x 2

-minor discomfort with the weights in front, decided it was a bad idea and did laterals instead.

Feeling good about this meet. If the shoulder doesn't feel great on Friday, will hit opener with the SSB. Deadlifting tomorrow, only working to 75% for an easy single.

So, goals for this meet are: 425-445/265-285/435-450+

All of the lowest of those numbers will be PRs, regardless of weight.

Best lifts previously were:
402@183
253@183
424@192

Best meet was my last, 6 months after the injury when I hit:

380@175
242@175
396@175

So, I should be set to really set some PRs next Saturday. The shoulder shouldn't really limit my lifts all that much, will just make hitting them significantly more painful.

Deadlift: 135kg x 1 (297#)

-DOH

GHR: BW x 10 x 2

RH: 150 x 10

-upright on elbows

Pretty good. Was a quick session, hit some hard GHRs with the knees jammed into the pads.

Straight bar bench today with 0 pain!

Practiced commands and only worked up to 75%.

90kg x 1

Then some light accessory work.

Tri Pushdown: 50 x 15 x 2
Hammer Curl: 25 x 15 x 2

Cable Row (Triangle): 120 x 12 x 2

Good quick day. Still hoping for a straight bar squat tomorrow, but I can tell the shoulder is not 100% quite yet. It feels like its close though, and as long as it doesn't hurt I will probably do it.

Congrats on the pain free bench.

So, you were working on commands from your wife? I bet she enjoyed that

She's actually pretty good at it, she competes as well so she has a pretty good idea of what a competition pause would look like.

I know, I was just giving you a hard time. Like Jim Buick would do.

Squat today

Worked up to 165kg x 1

It was slow, but didn't feel especially hard. Had some pain with the shoulder at the 140kg single before this one, so I took the bigger jump so that I didn't have to do as many sets with weights that caused any pain. Will likely open at 160kg and go from there.

After it was just some GHR (2 x 10), Back Ext (1 x 15), and RH (1 x 10).

Full on recovery this next week, will hit a decently heavy assistance day on Monday (12-15 reps) and two full meet practices (@50% and 30% Sunday/Tuesday) and a couple of lighter full body days to stay mobile and keep the blood flowing.

Didn't look all that slow to me. You were in control. Can't wait to see your meet results dude.

Yeah, if felt good to me. Didn't look as fast as I would've liked it to be.

Upper back could've been tighter, but I had my hands significantly wider to save the shoulder some.

I'm feeling really good about this right now, and I have always hit way better numbers at a meet than I do in training.

Did a full meet w/ commands yesterday at 50% of openers.

Then some light sets of 10 on the belt squat machine and 2 supersets of NG DB Bench and lat pulldown (15 reps each) today.

Just a few more days.

Any crazy diet plans this week?

Any crazy diet plans this week?

Nope.

Just taking it easy on cheese/dairy so I don't have to blow the toilet up all day Saturday.

Last I checked I was sitting around 185-186. Flights were posted yesterday night too.

4 total flights at this one. My wife is the second lifter in Flight A, and I'm right in the middle of Flight C.

Full meet practice today with 30% of openers.

Feeling good so far, got some high volume assistance tomorrow (real low intensity).

Curls, facepulls, rev hyper, lunges, planks.

Just hit some light hammer curls, RH, facepulls (band), and Tri extensions (band).

Planning to do a post squat type day tomorrow before leaving, should be in Austin before 8 so that we can weigh in.

Almost your time brother! Take some time visualizing your lifts. Almost time to execute some new bests

Weighed in at a whopping 83kg lol.

Just above the 181 class, dude was trying to see if I could undress enough to make 181 but I wasn't worried about that **** lol.

Wife weighed in at just over 53kg.

Getting some sushi and then headed to the hotel. Picked up some chipotle for tomorrow while we're lifting.

Wow I haven't been paying attention....good luck man! Kill it tomorrow.

Good luck Jim and wife!

****! Forgot to get on here and say goodluck this morning! Kill it dude!

Way to go, Puma! Your turn, Jim.

Looked as easy as bolt's PR the other day lol. Nice squat Jim

Didn't feel as easy as it looked, but they never do.

I was conflicted because I wanted 200kg but my previous squat was an easy 402 and I didn't want to miss a PR that I knew was there for one that I wasn't as confident in.

I hear ya. Similar to my situation on my last pull at my last meet. Attempt selection is always a bitch. Dont wanna miss a big pr but wanna push it too.

I think you had 205, bud. That 205 might've killed your deadlift, but I think you had it.

Should be about to start bench for flight A.

Wife should take the state record as a junior 123 before its all said and done.

Awesome lifts today Jim.
