It's not a surprise you hurt your knees doing leg extensions. If you feel the need to do those, use them as a super light leg finisher. The motion and weight placement alone is a recipe for disaster for knees. Knock those off for a bit, and get some good knee sleeves for squats and you'll be golden. I've had bad knees for years from playing soccer my whole life. Take care of them now and you'll be fine
 
I agree with Wrivest, leg extensions can be brutal on your knees. My vote on knee sleeves are the Rehbands. I've tried the Kono's in the past but they ended up splitting and losing all compression after about 3 months. The Rehbands are comfortable and have been a real knee saver.
 
Getting set up right on leg extensions is the key to doing them correctly. Back, feet, and relationship of knee to pivot point are key. I usually have to play with the "foot bar" to get it just right. Adjust one and it changes the angle on the other 2 points. And if you feel it in the knees you aren't setup right.
 
Thank you for the info! :D My knee started hurting when I was doing crazy heavy leg extensions. I was at 295 when my knees felt like they were going to pop. Today I adjusted my stance a bit so I can feel more comfortable. I think one thing I should really focus on is stretching before my sessions.

A good 5-10 mins of dynamic stretching beforehand will help tons. It gets the heart rate up, warms the muscles, but most importantly it opens up the joints to allow for less strained range of movement!!

Agree'd, leg extensions are another one of those machine type movements that pin your knee in an awkward position and are best at the end of a routine, I like to super set no less then reps of 12-15 of extensions with the same on lying leg curls just to bring that pump in and adjusting the machine so on extensions it doesn't pin my knee to far back as well as on the lying leg curls it doesn't hyper extend your knee to far forward,

I guess a lot of people make those mistakes as well and that's a guaranteed recipe for disaster when your already tired and you set the weight down hyper extending your knee a little to far forward... pre exhaust sets are good to doing those first before squats and presses with moderate weight.. I agree though if that's what caused the pain/injury in the first place it should probably be thrown out for a while and replaced with lunges weighted or not... you only live once and you only really have one shot at good knee joints unless you can get some awesome surgeon to rebuild ua but mre times the none it's never fun after the original injury unless you got some good supplements to rebuild and strengthen those babys..
 
Thank you, everyone. I go extremely light now. Another way I fcuked it up was by doing it for 2 mins non stop. Although it was light, that movement literally killed my quads and knees.

@clown, thank you! I bought some cheap ones but lost the compression within days, and now I can't even find them. :/

Hey puccah, I don't see how fat around the knee would have anything to do with it. That would be subcutaneous fat, and the cushioning and shock absorption for the knee would come from the meniscus... No fat around the knee is a good thing :)

I love the Rehbands. I have the older 7mm which I love- compression is great. They do have 5mm version as well which may be less compression but more comfortable. The compression from a good knee sleeve is nothing like the cheap ones (trust me I've tried tons).

Rehband also has some great elbow sleeves for those that need that as well.
The thing I like about this brand is that the rubber used as the compressor is covered inside and out, which makes it easier to put on as well as maintain durability of the actual sleeve.

I agree with what clown said. Whoever told you that you don't have enough fat around the knee sounds like they have too much fat in their head
 
Lol, thank you!!! All this time I thought my knees were bad because I didn't fat enough fat. I'll order some of those, I want tight but comfortable. Also, I may just get those elbow sleeves, too. My right elbow has been bothering it. It feels like a bruise/pinch. Hopefully, it'll help put some pressure so my forearms don't hurt during Muay Thai.
 
Don't think you'll regret the Rehbands (or whichever good sleeve you go with).
Look around for some different prices. There are lots of online retailers that carry the product usually cheaper than the Rehband site.

I've seen some pretty sick routines with worlds strongest man mike Jenkins and brian shaw using strictly rehbands and powerbands for movements like leg extensions, they said they never used machines for those because of the unnatural range of motion and stress it places on your knee's and ankles amd if these dudes being the monsters they are use those then theres gotta be SOMETHING worthwhile with them!
 
I have fat knees and my knees don't hurt so I would definitely say fat wins!

I've had more men than women comment on my calves. Kind of weirds me out a bit but a compliment is a compliment.

My calves are so tight, I had to buy one of those roller thingy to loosen them. I have to say, my mobility with squats last night was f'n horrible.

I had serious issues with calf cramping the other day at the gym. They were cramping during pull-ups. I knew it was time to cut my workout short and recover.

I haven't really been single since I was a teen. Almost 21 years ago. I guess it's good timing that I'm in better shape than I have been in years. Sometimes I surprise myself with how well I do with the ladies.

Haha my roommate in college always said he wished he was obese as a kid for this exact reason "have you seen fat people calves??? They're huge!"... He has a valid point ha.

Once I finally realized I could actually pick up girls I did a full 180 and became the stereotypical dbag for about 2yrs before finally finding a healthy balance between bravado and gentleman ha.

At least it only took you 2 years... I was that guy for about 6. I run into way too many awkward situations when I'm out with my wife n kids now.
 
LOL! that's hilarious, I remember working out around some rather barrel shaped guys and that was their favorite thing to show off, I was like "dude, if I was 350lbs and 5'8" my calvs would probably be massive too!"

right! that's kind of how I was, went from being shy to way to high to shy again and finding that perfect balance..

I hate that, my calves have been mega cramping lately! I got a Charlie horse the other morning and I swear it was so bad it had to have tore part of my inner calf muscle cause I felt it the last 3 days walking around, then I go through these spells if I fall asleep in a chair m circulation is weird and my legs specially ankle and calves swell up so bad I get those cankles for a week and then they really do look like fat people calves :-/

I tell you, when im single mosty of the time and looking I have the most impossible time finding a good woman, but the second I get in a relationship BAM no matter if im with her or not i'm bombarded by woman, and extremely bveautiful ones! one time I was with my girl at a red & jerrys (like bar and grill with arcade and everything in it) and my boy worked in the kitchen and was hooking me up with some food and this pretty girl is standing there and starts asking if I want her to buy me anything, im sitting there in awe and shock and cant for the life of me figure out why, (do I look broke or something???) no, I had a great job and decent clothes on, I tell her im getting my food for free anyways, she still keeps trying to buy me something and my girls just glaring at her, then later I go to use the bathroom and I run RIGHT into her! and she starts flirting me up, well my girl is straight down this aisle at the table staring us down, most awkward situation in my life just about, but that's how my "luck" if that's what you call It is. lol

I had a lot of problems with my ham strings cramping up, the foam roller really helped !!

I was at conference with my brand new girlfriend at the time. I was holding the door to the hotel for her when I saw someone else coming so I held on. It was a girl I had a one night fling with. They knew each other. That wasn't the least bit awkward. Lol

glad i dont have to worry about any of these situations. moved after high school and met my wife in another town so none of these issues arise.

My only cool story was between my first and second marriage I had got down to about 6%bf and all my muscles were hard as a rock. Was working out of town staying in a hotel and this really hot chick that worked there part time and at a strip club part time kept asking me out. Finally I asked her if she was only wanting to go out because of my bod. She said yes of course. I told her I wasn't a piece of meat. The funny thing is the next day I met who would become my second wife at the gym.!
