Danb's Mountain Dog and everything else log

I am right there with you I was steadily adding at 2400 cals. Complete recomp, actually slight gains in weight. Had to drop lower to see the weight actually begin to drop.

Do you think you can FEEL your metabolism shift? I only ask because I feel like the last 2 weeks mine has sped up or changed because I have been STARVING constantly during the daytime but after about 8 pm im good for a few hours at a time. But from morning until that meal at night I never get full lol...all in my head or metabolism shift?

Do you think you can FEEL your metabolism shift?
I can
but it's more of an observational viewpoint mostly, and feeling it as well, where one confirms the other (ie feel it/see it, IT must be happening)
you will notice with cal set-point change, hunger (to a degree), fat-loss slowing/increasing, increased body temperature, thirst increases somewhat..lots of little signs, if you are observant enough to your body to pick them up

Change is good :)

Certainly, and your recent week of free eating surely gave your metabolism a kick in the pants. When dieting for long periods leptin levels fall off which triggers a signal to slow the metabolism down to preserve body mass. Natural part of survival, carbs have the highest effect on increasing leptin stores. This is why you have your high carb days to kind of stoke the metabolism. However these refeeds since they are smaller do not always replenish the stores completely. You take in just enough to help but also during a diet avoid taking in so much that you negate the overall caloric deficit of a given period of time.

With the longer period of free eating you had, you had enough time and carbs / calories to replenish leptin further than you have in some time which definitely will result in an increase in metabolism. Don't take that to mean doing a longer free eating period regularly would be beneficial to your weight loss goals, as the extra calories consumed would end up overpowering the benefit if done in a repetitive nature.

Yet the leptin response has many diets that work very well based on this fact. Such as the Ultimate Diet 2.0 which advocates an extreme Keto style diet Mon-Friday afternoon and an extremely high carbohydrate intake over 24-36 hours Friday evening through Saturday. The diet works very well because the overfeeding period is so short yet intense enough to completely restore leptin levels without causing additional fat gain. At first it sounds awesome having all kind of sugary carbs and what not. However it can be pretty miserable trying to get in 1300-1600 grams of carbs in that period. Gaining 10-12 lbs per weekend and being water logged for a few days wears on you, but there is no denying it works and works well. Not recommending this just using it as a an example of how sometimes a good refeed is very beneficial to the metabolism.

So would it be beneficial to do like a 3 week strict diet followed by a week of carb replenishment?

Wow...knowledge bomb dropped lol

So would it be beneficial to do like a 3 week strict diet followed by a week of carb replenishment?
I wouldn't say 3 weeks... at least not for me lol I did like 4 months before I took a free week lol but im no nutritionist lol

What do you consider strict?

What Para said, what do you consider strict. I don't know that you need a week, in a week there is a long enough period that you could reach your glycogen saturation point and bottom line once you do so and continue eating big you are gaining fat. Also as in the diet I mentioned there are two EXTREME situations happening that counter each other from opposite ends of the spectrum. Going from a major ketosis diet being completely depleted to an extreme overabundance of carbs. If you do not have the extreme on one end going to an extreme on the other is not going to be as beneficial. What you may do is keep an eye on it, or even do a larger refeed that is not as extreme over the course of a day. Say every 3-4 weeks of strict dieting take in 4 grams of carbs per lb of bodyweight over a 24 hour period. However I would much rather recommend that you read the UD2.0 diet and understand it before trying to draw any conclusions. The key to limiting fat gain though is to shorten the period of time while increasing the amount of carbs substantially after depleting them substantially so that they are starving for the glycogen. That increases insulin sensitivity and causes a supercompensation of storage in the muscles.

Just wondering if you took the same concept as a diet using carb depletion for a week with a refeed and used it over a broader spectrum of time, whether it would work the same way or not. But when you explained that it's the acting on both extremes that allows it to work, that kinda answered my question.

Thanks buddy. Huge but shredded is the goal lol not even shredded really the goal is like 13% BF...seems so far away lol

Well don't get me wrong if you are cutting for say a month, have a free weekend with out too much fat but higher carbs would definitely kick the metabolism back up a notch. However in this case with Dan it had more to do with him being cutting for a long period with a very strict diet. So the week was not detrimental to him. He recovered from it quickly. If the idea was to speed up the metabolism from a cut while doing minimal damage if any at all. I would limit it to say a weekend but NOT a weekend of gluttony, and totally free eating, but one of targeted high carb, lower fat, and moderate easily digested proteins. Not to say a free meal or two during that time would not be okay but limiting fat while taking in large amounts of carbs is suggested so the insulin does not make you store fat.

You are well on your way Dan and looking great!

I notice a huge shift sometimes. Since I've been off my diet has been incredibly relaxed and quite a few cheat meals. That being said I'm always hungry and my strength is through the roof. I'm taking in around 4k cals a day which is about 1k more than when on. Yet I've barely put on any fat. Had I done this a few months ago I would have gotten fat as all hell! Metabolism shifts amaze me and confuse me.

Ha thanks buddy! Hopefully you had a good vacation!

Looking great buddy.

Caught back up and I'm impressed as always buddy.

Thanks bud.

Chest day today. Didnt track anything because i was short on time but did hit 315 for 4 on flat bench followed by 3 plates per side on the new hammer strength press for 2 sets of 8,6. And 25 deficit pushups. So 3 PRs in one day. Strength has completely came out of nowhere since being back from vacation. Also hit some cable flys and one arm peck decks supersetted with regular pushups. Kinda wish I would have tracked my numbers today.

Nice training session! Congrats on all the PR's sounds like you had some serious recovery from all the hard work while on vacation! Gotta love it when you expect to be set back and actually make progress!

Glad to hear you got the PRs bud! 3 in one training session bro!? ALPHA-status!
